Title: POST A PIC OF YOUR VERY FIRST BIKE HERE
Post by: Gingerball on September 23, 2012, 07:52:02 pm
Post a pic of your very first bike here - will be great to see who had what for their very first time  :mwink:

I got an Italjet before I went to school and drove it like hell on my grandfather's farm. The cover over the exhaust was missing and I got regular inside leg burns due to that. On the occasion I also forgot the side stand down and bought a few farms - nerwe af on the knees. My grandfather (in his boredom and without my grandma's knowledge) thought it wise to make a ramp for me using a long narrow piece of wood and a few bricks for elevation. After I exhausted the capacity of the ramp's jump distance (his boredom) he called a few of the farmworkers kids and had them lay down in front of the ramp. After he was satisfied I could clear the kids nicely on close spacings, he spaced them out further and further until my grandma came across our little spectacle and put a stop to it. I felt like a daredevil at age 5! Geez, we got hell from the old woman.

My introduction to "Dual Sport" was the Yamaha MR-50.  I bought it second hand from a school mate for a princely sum of R 50 in 1987. Petrol was freakin' cheap then.  I once put in 18 cents and got quite a bit of juice.  I heat seized the thing once while trying to do 110 km on the Freeway.  I am not sure what happened to it after I left college.  By that time it was stripped in pieces.   :'(
Favourite memory of this bike:  Riding home pissed from the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay.  ;D  Now that I think of it it was not very responsible.   :mwink: ;)

I'm not sure if this qualifies as my first bike.  A Honda Express 50cc/2 speed automatic.  It was actualy my mom's.  I grew up on an Air Force base in the early 80's (Langebaanweg) and there were stacks of these things all over the place.  I used to ride in the garden and sometimes sneak out in the street.  It had a 2l tank and could get a top speed of about 40 km/h.  That's fast when you're a laaitie.  Had lots of fun on that thing.   ;D

(bikes in 1st. and 2nd. pic not mine, but was exactly the same)

Yamaha DT 125. This isn't my bike, but mine was identical. Used to fill up with R0.50 petrol and ride to varsity and back several times before refueling. Rode it for about 2 yrs without a licence. The first time I rode it I wheelied unintentionally through the UPE security entrance, being unaware there was a power band.  :laughing4:

I think it had a 2T oil reservoir instead of premixing.

Yep, that 2 smoke power band....   First time I rode my friends PE 175 in the sand dunes I kakked myself.
I wasn't expecting the power band.  Try riding a old Vespa scooter in the dunes.  Lank fun!   ;D

I had one of these in the 80's. It started life like the pic and later looked like a plastic as all the lights and roadworthy parts were broken / crashed.

1995, probably a 80 something DT50  :laughing11:  Best thing ever to have my own wheels, cant beat the feeling   :ricky:
As you can see, wasn't to bothered about maintenance, but the thing just kept on going  :happy4:
Think I sold it for bout 200 bucks when I was done with it  :laughing7:

1976 Yamaha YB80. Had it for four years and did quite a few trips on it, the longest from PE to Stellenbosh over two days, because I needed it there in my student days, and my father would not pay to put it on the train.

This was my first bike, in 1999, A 1995 Kawasaki ZX-6R.
Bought it for R35 000 (borrowed from Wesbank  :mwink:) Learnt to ride it by wobbling from Linex Yamaha to Burchmores where I worked in 4pm traffic. Crashed it 5 days later on the corner right by my house and really trashed my knee and hands. Whats ATGATT?
Did i ever think that bikes would become such an important part of my life? Not in a million years  :ricky:

My eerste bike. 1965 Ducati Mountaineer. Ongelukkig kan ek nie my fotie opspoor nie, maar hy het net so gelyk.
Gekoop by 'n bankrot motorfiets winkel in Vryheid KZN vir R100.00

:drif:

Had a similar one to this, exactly! Suzuki TS125, 400 frame and 125cc engine. Got it when I was 16, replaced my mtb as primary transport. Blew the head twice, bent the piston arm once, crached it twice. Even after all that, it just kept on going until I sold it when I got my car licence.

Loads of fun!  :read:

My eerste was 'n Suzuki TS 125. Daai fiets kon enige iets doen.

I had a red TS just like yours, was a 185 if I recall correctly - the exhaust was a straight piece of water pipe going out the back, man did it make a noise. Used to drive skelm through town onto my uncle's farm next to our town and go watch movies at the drive-in.

My eerste 50 cc in 1972 het presies so gelyk. First one was a Suzuki TS50ER.
Replaced by a Honda MBX50 after the Suzi spontaneously disintegrated after some airtime.

Remember the Kawasaki AR 80.  That thing could shift!  I also heard of okes boring out the RZ 50's and sticking in a KX 60 piston.

Had an AR50, but unfortunately no photos. Got an 80cc conversion, bored that out to fit a KX80 piston, ported it to the max,  reamed the read block out to take a KX80 reed valve, fitted a KX125 carb, had a special pipe built and tuned it to run on methanol.

I won’t mention here how fast it was. Nobody will believe it anyways, but those who want to know can ask Moereloos. He knew the bike well.

My first bike, 1975 Yamaha FS1e "Fizzy" in silver, already a relic in 1988 when I got it, bought it for R300. I really wanted a Honda MBX50 or a Yamaha RZ50 or even a Suzuki RG50 like all my mates.

1991, I was in Std 8. Before I bought my first 50cc Suzuki TS50 did my father buy this(similar to pic) BMW R 100/7 1975 model. Had 33000km on the clock and he paid R 7000 for it. It stood in the garage and I was only allowed to ride it on Sundays. He accompanied me on his 1986 BMW R100RT and we usually drove to the local Pick 'n Pay parking lot so that I can learn how to ride this big bike. When I eventually got the Suzuki.....it was a different experience and not the same as driving the B'M. Traded the BMW in 1993 for a Alfa Export 1500cc......because a matric pupil would rather prefer driving something that he can take more than 1 friend with him........ :-[........what a MISTAKE. I should NEVER have done that.....but...that's history.  :-\

My first bike was a Moto Guzzi 125 two smoke.
Similar to the one in the pic except it was blue

First bike i ever bought with ABSOLUTELY GEEN KENNIS, out of Bike SA classifieds, private ad but from one of the Bike shops in Klerksdorp. Bike price R8500, to get looking nice firts round of repairs R5500, Seat, Handlebars, tyres etc. Than not happy with how it was running phoned Linex Yamaha for a quote on some spares(Still waiting for that quote mind you) Phoned JHB Yamaha got a spares quote within an hour, speak to the guy in charge of repairs he says he will collect no charge, I am in Linden they are in Edenvale, get the bike back, New rear hub new spokes  alles lekker, bike running like a bomb(R25000.00all sorts of little replacements everywhere, all justified) , but smoking alot, mechanic tell me motor is about to die, in the meantime I had bought new(sec Hand) footpegs, rear brake pedal assembly exhaust etc from bike hospital( only guys with spares at that point, affordable) ask them about a good second hand motor, ja we have one blah blah blah ,transfer the cash ask if they can deliver to JHB Yamaha, sure no problem more blah blah blah, The Guys from JHB Yamaha do everything to get bike roadworthy comes time for the road worthy the motor comes up as Stolen, phone bike hospital no they will sort it out, this lark carried on for about 4 months, Eventually Bike Hospital say they will get it through and on the road, fine deliver to Bike Hospital and pay JHB Yamaha( about R25k) after another 4-5 months I told Errol pay me for the bike and keep the farking thing cut the losses and LEARN A VERY EXPENSIVE LESSON.

This all happened before I was very active on WD.

My first bike: 1956 James Cadet 150 cc 2ST bought for me in 1957. My first and last 2ST! It could do 80, but not much more even on a downhill. The forks would bend or break at the first sign of a bump or depression. Villiers engine very reliable. Took me and a pal to Middleburg from Pta in the winter (and back) on its longest trip.

But it gave me freedom.

Ek was Std. 5 toe kry ek n nuwe RM80.
Daar was ons redelik veilig.

Hence my black-and-white, lol

Check the 'TP' front number plate and atgatt

And the bike was what make? Quite novel back then to have a bikini fairing!  Not a Garelli by any chance?

Sorry, Itom Competizione. The colour scheme was bright yellow, white frame & brown suede seat, - all original - lol

Sal hom graag wil terug koop. Toe 'n 1989 CR80, 1990 KX125, 1998 CR125, 2002 CR250R, 2007 KX250R en nou die 2012 XT 660z. Maar dis waar dit begin het:

Hier is my eerste baaik wat ek met my eie geld gekoop het! Het hom tweedehands by Mean Machine, Menlyn, gekoop in 1995 vir R22 500 as ek reg onthou. Is hy dalk 'n Willehond?

Kosibaai, Oos-Vrystaat, Oos-Transvaal, Upington, ens. My bagasie was sommer so in my voetslaan rugsak op die rug.

Ek was Std. 5 toe kry ek n nuwe RM80.
Daar was ons redelik veilig.

Have one of these lying in my garage that I need to get around to rebuilding

My first bike in 1986 was a previously loved Honda XL 185 for which I paid about R600. Knobbly tires contributed toward a few near death experiences when the roads were wet or a taxi drivers decided to spontaneously change lanes on Hospital Bend. Two years later I sold it for R600....I loved that bike ;D

My first bike was a 1989 Honda CBR250R 4 stroke. Bike did 18,500rpm.. :o. But 'power' only started at about 11,000rpm.. ;D. Eventually blew the head gasket and couldn't get any spares.. Kept it for a few years and sold it. Bought a Yamaha RD350 2 stroke in that time, biggest piece of shit I ever owned. Cost me a lot of money. I eventually sold it and the motor seized the day after the buyer took it.

The one "bike", (as it was incredibly underpowered), I see is missing so far and few others seemed to ride in the early 1970s is the Honda SS50.
I had one (a 1972 model, which I rode to school in Std. 9 and 10, 1973 & 1974, and even during my first year of university until I turned 18).
Sorry that the picture quality is so bad, but the klikkity-klack camera I had in those days was not that brilliant.
My friends on their two-stroke Suzukis and Yamahas laughed and said I looked like a "monkey on a stick"!! :imaposer:

My first "bike" (150 2-stroke 'Bajaj Chetak' Vespa copy).
-I don't have a pic of the one I actually had, but this is the model:

Not mine in the pic.

1980`s PW80. I was 8 or 9 then. My boet had the TS 250 and our parents had a Merc parked in the garage that served as our personal fuel station  ;D

We lived in a small mining town called Penge. Everybody had bikes and nobody had helmets.. Those were the days  :ricky:

Thinking about it now, I don't recall ever changing a filter on that bike, ever. Just gooi juice. I rode that bullet proof bike until I was about 14.

Mine was a Yamaha dt50 lc just like this one.
We were in std 7 and a mate of mine had the red one.
We were inseperable and went everywhere on those things!

Bought my first bike second hand for R250 cash in 1987. Suzuki PE175 with no papers. It had a vicious 2stroke power band, and it was a lot of fun!

This was also my first offroad bike.   :)  The first time I rode it turned out to be the best & worst day of my starting to ride my own bike life.  It was great, cause off we went to Durban Deep race track in Roodepoort, for those of you who can remember and that rode that track.  I learned the same lesson that day about it's unbelievable power band, when coming down the "chicken run", deciding to give it a little gas and let the back wheel dance through all the small whoops, but only to see the bikes front wheel lurch into the air, I ended up on my arse and the bike went for it's own ride for another 50m and came to a crunching flip upside down.  It had new mirrors which were buckled like a peeled banana, handle bars bent, front mud flap askew, esihhh, it was painfull to see my brand new pride in joy, in very second hand condition   >:(

1978 Honda Chaly, Upped from 50cc to 150cc. Needed a new piston head every two weeks for so - You've never felt 100km/h until you've felt it on 10 inch wheels.

This bikes gears work downwards with neutral right on the top. Was very easy to manage as a "laaitie".

Lekker man :thumleft: :thumleft:.

My first bike was a Yamaha TY50, learnt to ride on it and learned to fight.

The old man bought one bike between two brothers (6 and 10) living on a farm near Kentani in the Old Transkei. You can imagine the rest.

We started with the my day, your day thing, then lost the plot.

At least I was older, and didn't care if I was called a bully, I got more bike time and that was that  ;).

He did go on to become a multiple EC and Border MX Champ though. I went on to become the guy with the most crashes in a single year.

We (Dad) got rid of ours because we knew nothing about bikes. After about two years the bike was battling, no power, no speed. Not knowing anything about engines and living on a farm I (teenager) just kept cleaning carbs and air filter, changed rings.......... until we gave up and sold it.

Not even a week later this little thing comes flying past me while I was riding my horse. It had the under seat expansion box which we never knew would clog and the new owner simply took of the exhaust and decoked it, brand new bike.

I still don't think I have ever been much more pissed off ever since then, and I wish I still had it, although I wish I had every bike I have owned.

1969 Vespa 150 Sprint

Not sure where the "Sprint" originated from, maybe it has a different meaning in Italian..

Bought it for R3000 in a terrible state when I was 16. Engine was good though. Spent about R7000 on cosmetics and used it daily riding to school and around town.

Unfortunately sold it last year :( But it is in good hands and at least being used.

Still amazed with that little engine, almost 50 years old and still going!

I can assure you in their day it was no haas! Only 50cc bike that could maybe take it was a Kreidler or Zundapp (this was pre the RD with reed valve). I had two - the one was seriously ported and modded and raced in the 100 Club at Killarney.
