Title: Wilddog down............... Recouperating well - back on the wheels!
Post by: Goose on October 08, 2012, 10:41:54 am
Got a seriously shocking message early this morning that my son (he's not that active - but uses "Woofles" as forum name...) has had a bike accident and is in hospital in Cape Town... no details yet....... apparently broken leg....... shit.. and I'm over here!

a father's worst nightmare............

UPDATE:
He's fine - Tibula & Fibula broken. In Vincent Palotti Hospital

Accident happened in Keurboom Avenue this morning!

UPDATE 2:
Just received word that my son's got a temporary cast on.

They have allowed him to go home and will only operate on his leg on Monday once the swelling has gone down!   ???

For all the kind souls that have offered to go and visit him at the hospital - I really appreciate it, but for now he's going to be at his mom's house on lots & lots of pain killers!   :thumleft:

Awaiting details.

Adrian van der Merwe called me on Skype to say he's seen a bike-accident this morning on Kromboom Road. It was cordoned off - he saw a rider sitting in the road on the incoming lane. A yellow bike lying on the side............ rider looked ok but in pain. He could not get access...........

My son has a yellow DR200..............  Adrian's got numbers and will be calling his mom to see if he can get info............. will update when I can.

Update:

He's at Vincent Palotti in Pinelands!

Broken left leg in 2 places.. apparently has to have pins.

Adrian indicated that he was filtering when a car crossed the traffic and connected him...........  my biggest fear ever!  Would be some blame allocated to him obviously as the traffic had slowed/stopped and left a gap for cars to cross.  :'(

Shit - if there are any Wilddogs that could go and offer him some support..... I would be extremely grateful!

I have no further info as to where he is - except that it's V/Palotti...... his name is Andrew van der Linden..........  :-\

Just spoke to my son - he's ok - in pain and a temp brace.

Leg broken in 2 places.

Waiting to go into Theatre...................  will keep all informed!

Apparently he feels liable as he was filtering.
Admits that perhaps he was going a bit fast.
Car's driver pulled out into traffic... but my son says he was watching the driver's face and he was looking left - not in the direction of the stopped traffic as the driver obviously did not expect a filtering bike!

Ironic that the kid had been struggling with ADHD his whole life. He managed to finish his plumber's course a week ago and was on his way to his first day at his new job!  :'(

I just responded to Oppie as well!

Both the Tibula & Fibula is broken in his leg...........

I have worked hard with my son to get the two XT550's sorted and if you look, you'll see our names on the top of Oppie's list for the Breede Rivier Bash.
He loves the outdoors and we saw how much satisfaction and excitement he got from helping to rebuild the XT!

When I mentioned that we'd join the Bash in November - he was beside himself!
He was also keen to join the Wilddogs on rides afterwards..... and I saw this as a chance to help him get his life sorted and a way he could meet others that have a love of DS riding and could sort of coax him into the "pack" which would give him tremendous satisfaction and self-confidence.

Thanks for all the massive show of support and PM's ... it's really hugely appreciated and again just shows the amazing cameraderie this forum brings!

HELP................

Can any of you Wilddogs advise/help....?

I have sent a contact request to Oppie.... but wondered whether anoyone has info............. my son has no Medical Insurance cover or any for the bike (not a hassle)............

I seem to remember when I had my accident - I was covered 100% by 3rd Party Insurance or Road Accident Fund............

What are the procedures involved...  ???

Goose, always here to help bud.. where is the bike, do you need me to collect it and take to to a workshop.. let me know.

Road accident fund you can claim but you will wait years, my brothers claim was a year ago now and nothing. Do you have the details of the motorist, if they are covered their cover may help your son. I am not 100% sure.

shout if you need anything mate  :thumleft: no reason to feel helpless over there.. we sort things out here for you !!

Not sure - but think Adrian will help sort the bike - thanks mate!

What's of huge concern now is that the Ex has just sent us a message that Vincent Palotti have indicated that the Operation would cost R50,000 to do  :eek7: :eek7:  or they can try and set it in a cast now and "hope they get it right"  ???  bliksem...............!!

With our financial situation totally screwed, a mother that's just had a Hip replacement and a heart attack a week ago...  :-[ and no Medical aid here...... (we're on the NHS) ........ I'm really stumped as to what to suggest or do..............  ??? ???

They have indicated they could transfer him to a State Hospital............. but how/what/where............  has anyone else had same predicament???
Title: Re: Wilddog down...............
Post by: Rynet on October 08, 2012, 02:29:29 pm
Yikes .Sorry to hear that Goose  :o

Vincent Palotti is one of the best places could be for treatment , especially for leg injuries .  They deal with a lot of motorcycle injuries .

Regarding claiming from the Fund I can help you with that if you would like me to  . Have done quite a few motorcycle injury cases . Will need the Police case number , will see whether it has been reported.

The Road Accident should pay for the hospital and other medical expenses ( less the proportion that he is held liable for ) . Once you lodge a RAF claim , the hospitals will wait for payment as they will get their funds from the RAF . With the new system they don't pay out much more than medical costs and loss of earnings unless you have permanent medical damages.

Re the motorcycle damages , he may be able to sue the other driver , depending who is most guilty. Let me know if I can help , or just give some moral support .

Goose, try to have it done in a state hospital. There is nothing wrong with it.

my call is Grootte Schuur, UCT side.

The risks to leave it for another week is just too big. he's gonna kak himself with pain as well.  if he can be operated tonight or early tomorrow he will be able to start physio in two days time. Minimises the risks of DVT as well.

Post by: Rynet on October 08, 2012, 02:43:12 pm
Just saw your latest post now Goose.

If the Private hospital is not sure of payment either from the client or the RAF, they do send patients to the goverment hospitals. Will need more information from the Private hospital, from him and from the SAP statements ,to see if he qualifies and if the hospuital will wait for their payment from the RAF

Government hospital will be less financial risk for him ( and you ) now as in case the RAF reduces payments to him pro rata ( if he is say 30% liable ) then at least you don't have to bear the excess between what the RAF pays and the bill. Would need much more information about the type of operation required etc .

I agree. goverment hospitals have good doctors ( even if the other amenities are not great )

Hey Goose, that is so not cool. I can relate to your situation entirely and wish you well with your anxiety. Does not seem that you need to worry with all the support offered by the dogs - he's in good hands. Agree with the advise on Groote Schuur. Get him in there now. Much better than waiting till next week. Have no idea on how to go about admission but sure it wont be too complicated. I'm free all day today and tomorrow and can take him wherever he needs to go to get this sorted. PM'ing phone numbers now.
Andrew - hang in there mate. With all the WD support you'll be back in the saddle in no time.
Title: Re: Wilddog down............... He's out of hospital... for now!
Post by: Lem on October 09, 2012, 07:36:43 am
I agree with Geeza

Through my work I spend a lot of time during the year in State hospitals and I see the doctors & nurses. As I've also spent a lot of time during this year in private hospitals recovering from my bike crash I can assure you that at a place like UCT Grootte Schuur he'll more than likely end up being operated on by the surgeons who have trained all the famous okes from the private hospitals.

With these ops, there are a shitload of hidden costs to watch out for, like anestetics and a lot of X-rays. A double leg break (sounds like a Shane Warne delivery) like your son's will be at least 1.5 hours in theatre, and in private hospital will be at least R 7500 bill, just for anestetics, and another R 3000 for radiology, and another R 1000 for pathology.

get him booked into UCT Grootte Schuur. Leaving him on pain killers till monday can cause a lot of inflamation, and risks a blood clot. he's a young man, and his bones will start to grow on as well, this will cause a bigger operation for the docs to skimm the growth, and straighten the job again.

Hi Goose.
TibFib is not lekka, I know cause I've done those two about three years ago. The good news is that your son is young and he'll recover much quicker than I did.

I was in a state academic hospital in Pretoria, and I had great service from there. Saw 6 doctors and all six said the same thing - don't opperate. Today I hear how people with metal implants complain and I'm glad that I spent the extra time in a cast and didn't have the op, although the time sucked as I couldn't really make a living.
As for the break, don't even worry about the Fibula, the doctors don't. The Fibula is the important one, but it should be fine.
Hope he heals quick.

Ok Vincent Palotti wil not work with RAF anymore , they have waited to long in the past for payments . So he must go to a government hospital . But the doctors and the training are the same at Goverment hospitals as long as one takes an active role to make sure all goes well.
I've also heard Groote Schuur is good. :thumleft:

My advise is to get properly diagnosed by Dr Bernstein at Vincent Palotti, which will cost R900. He can then properly advise on the best course of action . Every case is different . He is one of the best in Cape Town , Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon , works with lots of motorbike injuries , we send our client to him for reports . Once you have the correct diagnoses and course of action , you can go to a government hospital eg Groote Schuur ,would be my advice. And time is of the essence , must decide asap , today if possible.

Had good news and bad news today for Dirk.

He had an appointment this morning with a Specialist at Vincent Palotti.

It was confirmed that the type of breaks he has would need to be pinned........... and suggested that he had the operation done at Victoria Hospital in Wynberg.

The bad thing is that he cannot have the operation to fix his leg until next week - either Monday or Wednesday as there are just no available slots for the operation.

Cannot imagine what he must be going through with a double break and having to lie at home without high-strength meds.....  :eek7:

I remember after my bike-accident, the pain with a smashed knee was unbearable........ all I can do is pray he keeps his head and that there's some alleviation to his ordeal.

If there's any of you chaps/ladies that could go and offer him some encouragement and support - I'd be really grateful... would make the world of difference to him (and me)   :thumleft:

His home address is : 7 Ranelagh Road, Claremont

+1 As jy wil hę ons moet hom Grootte Schuur toe vat gaan haal ons hom vinnig-vinnig, laat weet net...

Dirk contacted me this morning... his mom's an emotional wreck at the moment and really struggling............ he's in serious pain and out of desperation they have tried all the hospitals in the Cape area... nobody wants/can take him and all have indicated he has to wait another week for an operation.... :patch:

I feel so bloody useless............ and all the offers of transport is so much appreciated - there's just nowhere to transport him to?  :'(

Got his X-Rays this morning................. eina bliksem!

If there's anyone anywhere than might have contacts or clout to get this kid's leg fixed........... please, please let us know!  :-[

Goose, what's the issue with the hospitals?

nada mate.... they say all full........  Tygerberg, Groote Schuur & Victoria hospitals no-go..........   :-\  Karl Bremer has no Orthopaedic ............  just have no clue. Seems the fact that the kid's not on Medical Aid is the big issue............

I remember years ago - I had an accident and fell off a balcony - broke my ankle. After sitting at GS for over 4 hours my one mate said "stuff this" and took me to 2 Mil in Wynberg. They were totally quiet and immediately sorted me out.....  thank ggodness I remembered my Force number..... but man were they pissed at me afterwards when they found out I was no longer in the service...  :mwink:  but their medical was absolutely stunning! (seems a pity that while the State Hospitals are so over-crowded - they cannot pass some of the serious stuff as overflow to the Mil hosps..?)

I was even trying to search for hospitals in Ceres, Caledon, Bredasdorp...??

probably 50-80k
Title: Re: Wilddog down............... X-Rays added?
Post by: Lem on October 12, 2012, 01:22:00 pm
well, it's a good, clean snap on both bones

it's an easy fix. If Karl Bremer doesn't have an orthopedic theatre anymore then I doubt the smaller towns will have it in their hospitals.

Must try bigger towns.

Hottentots Holland in Somerset West is a good hospital.
Mossel Bay has a big Provincial Hospital. Just don't go further East, in the Eastern Cape they'll fix the wrong leg.

if he can get a slot, I'm sure the Dogs can make a plan to get him there quicker than a Government Hi-Ace Ambulance .

Nope - unfortunately we don't have that sort of cash.......... the savings we had, have been used here in the UK where neither of us are working - living off SA Rand at the moment (horrible exchange rate) while we sorted out my wife's 88-yr old mum..............  now we have done what we needed to do - we will come back to SA to hopefully start our lives from scratch.  :-\

The laaitie also has no funds/medical aid........ he's only just finished his Plumber's course and only been working for 2 weeks before accident.......

Life's a bitch mate........... just as you get up on your feet - something nails you.............

Hi Goose.

Dr Bernstein said that he would not have physical side effects if he waited till next week to have the op.  He is going to Victoria Hospital on Monday morning at 6am and once he is in their system they must help him even if it is not the same day. At Government hospitals they will usually tell you no over the phone, as they have people who are dying and have much more serious injuries. But once you are at the hospital , he goes onto the waiting list and at some point they must give him the op.

At this stage the main thing he has to do is bear the pain and discomfort and emotional stress until Monday. He does have strong painkillers and is well looked after.  All of us who ride bikes have been injured ,its a side affect of riding a bike and we have to bear the pain and trauma when something goes wrong. He is struggling now, but it is also an important life lesson and will also teach him defensive riding and will keep him alive in the future.

He is in good hands , nothing much more anyone can do at this stage. Great if another hospital can take him earlier , but for now he is resting with his leg up and he and his mom are coping.  :thumleft:

Good luck it must be hard for you being there :thumleft:.  Will chat to you after I have seen him. :thumleft:

The cameraderie amongst WD's is awesome...I've been subject to it in a moment of duress myself, albeit much much less serious than your plight, Goose, but it is wonderful and overwhelming.

All I can do, however, is spare thoughts of hope, and cross all digits firmly that this pans out for the best for you all.

Kudos to you guys who are helping!

Hey all so i see i have been registered on Wild Dogs for quite a long time, apologies for not being active was not aware of this :patch:

Any way as you all know iv'e just come off my DR200 and broke my leg quite badly, as excruciating and unbearable that the pain has been iv'e had alot of support coming from a bunch of guys and gals that like to ride bikes, people i don't even know, i had a awesome visit from Rynet and from red baron, who are both great people full of life, and Rynet being one kick-ass woman who knows more about bikes than me  :thumleft:

Goose(pops):thanks for your support, even though so far i feel the love and care!oh and rad jacket you got for me!hehe yeah cant wait to get riding with you again, going to be amazing yeah!

alright so for really what happened...

so i was splitting lines as we all know we can do(which irritates the people in cars!)because we don't have to sit in traffic :) , and as i got about 2 cars away from the intersection this guy started pulling out, it was already to late to break so i tried to swerve, but as i pulled up i looked down, i saw his car connect with my leg, and that was it, i knew..

but ya thanks again all.  O0

Eish sorry to hear Woofles, hope everything goes okay on Monday.

It know its hard but the pain will be there no matter what happens, just try and park that feeling somewhere and ignore it - I find that helps after a while.

What does your employer say - I hope you still have work...  :(

Goose/Woofles please shout if you need financial assistance and confirm banking details. (I'm not sure if its needed now or not... :dontknow: )

no worries x-Rays, and thanks, going to have to sit in a line for about 2 hours trying to get on the system but that will be the worst of it,once done it should all go quick compared to the last week.

at the moment the itching under the cast is what is getting to me more than anything, i have great meds for the pain :drif:

i know the 2 options with an injury like this are generally that the employer get a replacement or just a temp till im healed up, luckily they have chosen to get a temp and the second im fine to work i can go back!
i think its more because my boss rides bikes as well and has recently had an accident himself, so i think he can sympathize with me and he came to visit yesterday with his wife, very nice people.

must say i feel very lucky, i still have my leg,job and if anything its brought me closer to my family.

about the finances...it will cost just under 50k but we will make a plan, thank you so much for the offer, much appreciated.

As usual the Wilddogs don't disappoint - HOWEVER - Rynet has indicated that the Road Accident Fund would accept liability and assist.

So for now - I would suggest that financial assistance is not given until we have all the facts as to what they are paying for..........  I'll stretch our funds as far as possible first mate!

There are people with far more need than us....  and some of the Dawgs have been kind enough to assist.............

What would be of great help is if/when help is perhaps needed  for transporting him to & from the hospital........... but even this we could probably cope with for now.

Meanwhile we hope for the best ......... the weekend just needs to fly past and I'm sure that as soon as the leg's been set, and recovery can start - all will be well! (that ends well...  :mwink:)

Welcome Woofies. All the best for Monday. Bone type operations are normally made up of 3 aspects. First is the operation itself and this is in 99.99999% of the time a great success. After this it is up to you.  Listen carefully to what the doctor and physio have to say and then do it 100% like they say. Don't be a windie and try and jump the gun. Stick to the time frame of the healing process.  Last but by no means least, keep Right mind set. Be positive. There are many WD here for you to call on.  I am a long way from Cape Town but if I can help in anyway, let me know

thanks again and i will definitely shout if im in need of any assistance.

Re re the RAF case it will not be a big claim as the op itself will be done at a Government hospital ,so minimum expenses there. The RAF should pay for the medical expenses at both hospitals , as well as loss of earnings, but they do take long to pay out .

But there are lot of little expenses to be carried now and Woofles is not working at the moment and not being paid as he just started working so if anyone feel they want to help ,this is the account to use :

;D they did, but i think im getting immune to them, so what keeps me busy is reading the RR's and a couple movies...

Thanks Red baron, not really in the right position to draw, but once the leg is in a stable position ill take one of the pictures from one of the most inspirational RR's to me(they all quite good and making me eager to ride :ricky: ) and do a sketch of that if the guys wouldn't mind, ill post it under this thread...

Good Luck and hang in there!

Stay positive as you are... and listen to what the docs and physios say - and do it as they say! Then all will be fine and sorted fairly quick.

I am 4 months down the line, recovering from a smashed knee so I know....!

It is frustrating at first and might feel like a drag, but then the time and healing moves quicker, and it all becomes fun again!
You are younger so once on the mend it will go quick quick!!

Hang in there and be strong, and enjoy the time to do other things....  :thumleft: :thumleft:

Listen I have to just add that his mom told me that she's amazed at the people offering support - most being total strangers!
Dirk has had an amazing positive response to the people - especially the Wilddogs and their support. She mentioned he's been engrossed in the Ride Reports and it seems we have awakened a fire in him that will hopefully have a really great effect on him.

All I can say is thanks to all you wonderful people...... strangers in a way... but what a fantastic group indeed!   :thumleft:

When I broke my ribs I couldn't lie down for 3 weeks , had to sit and try and sleep , pain was awful . But it all heals in the end.

And you can use this time contstructively , you can use the time to plan how you want to live your life ,and what you don't want in your life.  :thumleft: And no to Bob Marley ciggies or cookies   :deal:

Yip did the same.... You get used to sleeping on your back after a while, and even with a brace or whatever on, but then the time passes and when you are able to start sleeping on your side again it is SUCH a pleasure!!! In any event if you cant sleep just try and relax your mind. As time goes on, try using a pillow under or between yor legs. Dont worry the time does pass quite quickly in the end - even if it feels like a drag at first. I also stoped the smoking to help the healing go quicker.

+1

With my tibia (compressed fracture, looong plate, 11 screws, stuffed knee), I was riding after 3 months (and I am 42) - but 3 month after that I still won't chance offroad - your leg has to take too much strain standing, going over obstacles and when your leg is down - and trust me, you don't want to have to go back for them to start all over again - it's not worth it!

anyone know what to do about that sort of cramps or pain?

Know exactly what you mean as I'm going through the same thing myself.
Chat to your physio, mine gave me a super masssage that worked out all the knots & kinks & I feel much better.
I also got some Trepiline prescribed by my doc which is helping with the aches & nerve pain at night time.
( I take Tramahexal SR150 in the mornings for the daytime pains )

I also spend a lot of time on a CPM (continuous passive motion) machine at the physio which is a gizmo that constantly flexes & straightens the leg while you just lie there - it really helps.

get well soon

one of those super masages sounds great right about now, so far I've had to resort to self masages which are not so super.

otherwise thanks for the addvice, i have an appointment for Monday and will definitely stop by the physio department before i leave.

good luck to your healing as well  :thumleft:

Well - the time has come & gone and basically - Dirk's leg is sorta healed. He can pretty much walk without crutches and the docs are happy with the progress. He was told that in about 3 months time... the leg should be suitably strong and same as before.

He's been chomping at the bit to get going but had some repairs and issues with the DR200. Unfortunately the kickstart is still stuffed - so he push-starts the bike to get it going (I'm not going to hoes another R1500 for the shaft & kickstart  :eek7:)
Dirk was keen to try and start the XT550...... but with a grimace on his face he agreed that his leg was not able to handle the weight yet. I did however let him have a spin on the XT.... and he came back with the biggest grin ever!

So he came to visit and I handed him his new ATGATT - the Akito Desert jacket fits him perfectly, new Fox gloves, Bellstaff trousers and O'Neal boots............. oh and of course a unique new "London Bike-Safe" vest! (which he posed in, I then sent the pics to the MET Police instructor and he's re-posted on their main website.....  :thumleft:)

The pose......... especially for the MET Police... just to show them what blue skies & sunshine looks like!

I agree..... it was just stink-hot and he'd not gotten used to the jacket yet. He took the vest with though.... he'll definitely be wearing it...

Money in the bank. Ek moet elke dag met my kinders baklei. Hulle wil net nie glo, dat die dag as jy dit nodig het, koop dit dalk net vir jou daai ekstra paar sekondes.

going great.. was back at work for the first time 2 weeks ago on Thursday, and they asked me, "so hows your leg doing?"
answering with hype, "yeah its getting better and im fine to walk and what not." next thing i know they throwing a 40 kg bag of sand AT me to carry!  :o haha any way coping well and haven't stopped moving since!!

k#k thing now is they made me take the builders holiday with out pay, only because i worked 2 days and then they didn't need me for the last week :(

i think the push starting is helping with strengthening my leg, and im willing to keep doing it as long as i can ride :ricky:

hopefully ill be seeing you all soon for a trip to Cederberg??
