Very interesting Field in the Rally. We have all the top Culprits and even a couple of Saffers in the mix (Darryl and Riaan)

I would love to see how the training for Darryl and Riaan has helped!

The Starting list!

That line up is something or what.  This is going to be the race to follow this year.  All the big names, our boys and the new HRC Honda team ....... hmmmmmm, IT'S GONNA BE A HUM DINGA!!!   So the question is, who will take it.  My 2c is -
HONDA - think they have instructions to complete the race for testing evaluation, so don't think they will push max.
KTM, Coma & Depres - They will push, but will only make sure that they stay in top 10 and suss out the competition.
KTM = Darryl & Riaan - I think they are going to find themselves very quickly up there, and when they do and get a sniff of the flag, they will push.
My money is on Darryl - GO SA Boytjies!!!

My thoughts are that Darryl and Riaan are very technical riders. This hanging on the cable for hours on end may not be for them! I hope i am wrong.

It is awesome that they are there and they did some Testing with Marc Coma yesterday (As per Darryl`s FB post).

Cant Wait!

I cannot find any thing that they are contesting. There doesnt seem to be a prologue so they start off in order of entry, Maybe it is a Scrutineering issue?

I'm assuming that the the live map has the START & FINISH at wrong ends??  It also seems Riaan is now getting away from Darryl.  Sam
Sunderland seems to be the biggest mover up in positions.  So far our boys have mad up positions, notably Riaan who pulled away 15th and now is in 10th.

Nope, got that wrong, Darryl now ahead of Riaan, so not sure what is going on, so will wait for the finish line.  Anyhow, they seem to be doing great.

There are 2 other SAFAS, Lovemore & Potgieter - Anyone know anything about them?

Now if only we could get redbull to televise this as they did with the monkey jumping out of a balloon! Surely it is easier to transmit on the ground than it is to 130,000 Ft.

Now this is where Coma comes intohis own.

He can easily close up the 2 minute start gap that they have in the morning that will leave him 38 Seconds ahead of Rodriguez. To pull from the front and maintain a lead is another story and calls for a set of huge brass balls!

As i understand it tomorrow is another day of dust and then into the dunes! Then the masters are at play!

:thumleft: Honda! but remember there is still another 5 days to Go!

yep, I dont even think that he will try and make up the full 2 minutes. I think he will only go for the lead in the dunes where he has less risk when he needs to push in defence

Darryl and Riaan got lost just after CP1 this morning (together with Knuiman, Fretigne and Fish). Hoping we'll see them move up a place or two tomorrow. 8)

Rodriguez is normally slower in the first part, As he gets into rythym his pace will increase! The Problem with Rally is you have to be able to navigate as well as ride fast. Very few people can do bothe succesfully!

At that stage, yes. When you are on the tracking site, select the bike category and it will give you the timing like so:

Orlen I gather is a Polish team rising KTM 450s (http://www.orlenteam.pl/PL/Strony/default.aspx)
I see a Johnny Campbell amongst the bikers. I guess he has decided that riding a bike is a lot safer than sitting next to Robbie Gordon?

I'm a really, really kak rider, so I identify a lot more with the guys at the back of the field. Looks like there are a few today that are having a LONG day.
Ralph Eric Molander is still moving, but seems a bit navigationally challenged.
Thierry Pico also moving, but a long way out.
Jerome Lunot and Stephane Millochau aabout 16km out.

From Darryl's blog:
"The 2 South African riders had a good day today making up another position to cross the line of stage two in 16 and 17 position. Darryl said that the terrain was very much the same what they raced yesterday and after starting out a little slow this morning and making sure of his road book and navigation Riaan managed to catch and overtake him and come in just ahead at the end of the stage"

I'm enjoying the spread of bikes over the top 20. Maybe KTM dominance is not being challenged yet, but  they might be getting a little nervous. Team HRC must be rather pleased with themselves thus far.

Top 10 = 3xKTM, 2xHonda, 2xHusky, 1xBordone Ferrari, 2xYamaha
Top 20 = 7xKTM, 4xHonda, 3xHusky, 2xBordone Ferrari, 3xYamaha, 1 not stated

The Bordone Ferrari team are on KTM's as well. Still a nice spread though. :thumleft:

Todays stage.

Stage 3 WEDNESDAY 17th OCTOBER 2012 : THE SANDY PASSLIAISON : 17 KMS – SELECTIVE SECTOR : 291 KMS – LIAISON : 49 KMS
Beautiful stage, very fast, in which the navigator again will have a leading role. Sandy track, fast and
crossing several sandy passes. Highlight of this stage.
The Rally leave Erfoud to go down south / west. FECH FECH area to cross with trails in every way.
Off-track on chott in oued, caps always in the spotlight! After all, a pleasure to drive on fast tracks,
sinuous and sandy to finish by crossing two cols.

I think not so much tracking accuracy or nav error as the route waypoints that were joined with straight lines. Some of those lines go straight over koppies where more natural lines are evident.

Seems as if Darryl and Riaan rode together the whole day today and quite a lot of yesterday.
For the guys that know, is is significantly easier to ride with a buddy close by? Two navigators better than one sounds sensible, but I guess it is difficult to find two riders whose skill matches closely enough to make this feasable.

From http://www.cyclenews.com:

"A crash early in today's third stage of the Rally of Morocco has knocked Marc Coma out of the race, the Spaniard suffering a dislocated left shoulder  :o that has forced him to withdraw and fly back to Spain for treatment.
Coma crashed on the 221-mile stage between Erfoud and Zagora and was taken to hospital in Errachidia. He will return to Spain tomorrow, according to his Red Bull KTM team. Coma was second in the overall standings after the first two stages of the event.
Honda's Helder Rodrigues, who was riding behind Coma at the time of the crash, stopped and assisted his injured rival  :thumleft: until Coma's teammate Joan Pedrero arrived on the scene.
Once Coma was airlifted from the scene, Pedrero was able to continue his race, though he would lose more time due to a navigational error.
Todays' stage was won by Paulo Goncalves over Rodrigues with Chaleco Lopez third.
Rodrigues leads the overall standings by a tick over 11 minutes from KTM's Cyril Despres"

Official MRW Statement on Marc Coma’s Injury

"A fall on the first part of the third stage of the Rally of Morocco —a 357km run between Erfoud and Zagora— has taken Marc Coma out of the race. The MRW rider suffered a dislocated left shoulder in the accident and was taken to hospital in Errachidia, where his injury was treated. He will return to Spain tomorrow. His teammate, Joan Pedrero, had little luck on the stage either, and a navigation mistake cost him several minutes and lost him a place in the overall standings.

Second after two stages, Marc Coma’s fall eliminated him from the race. In an off-road section requiring a moderation in speed, the rider hit a mound of sand with his rear wheel at about 50 km/h and was flung over the handlebars of his KTM, hitting his left shoulder. Hélder Rodrigues, who had been riding behind him, came to assist until Joan Pedrero arrived. At that point, the rally helicopter landed to take Coma to hospital. The dislocation was subsequently attended to and the first X-rays were taken, ruling out any fractures. Coma will travel today to Casablanca, before being flown to Barcelona tomorrow for further tests on the extent of the injury"

Maybe the terrain is today is taking it's toll.  The pics show what they are into today - Heavy on machinery in the dunes or what.  What do you say Kenesis & BlueBull, does the sand and dunes pose a bigger threat to the bikes endurance, than ordinary or other terrains?

Yip, that is exactly what has happened, including Darryl & Riaan and a buch of the other top 10 riders.  Despres had no such issues and his lines were perfect and so has made up a lot of time on the others.  Just goes to show, its not all about how fast you are in these races, but it has to be a combination of rider skill and navigational skill.

Looks like today took its toll, with quite a few riders out.
Jabobus Potgieter surely has to be a South African, anybody know him?

Jacobus POTGIETER is an architect and CEO of KND Naval Design. He is a fan of
cross-country rallies but, 3 years ago, he had a terrible crash. « I rided a lot of crosscountry
rallies, too many to mention. The last was the Australian Safari 2009 which
ended in a disaster. My BMW 650 Rally broke in two pieces at high speed with result
I ended in hospital. The OiLibya Rally of Morocco will be my first race since».
For his come back, the South-African will come with two friends. « Steve Lovemor is
the eldest of us and the youngest is Mark Du Plessis… the more fiery and faster too.
With the OiLibya Rally of Morocco, we look for adventure and thrill. The aim is to
finish and to have a lot of fun… »
To take a maximum pleasure, Kobus will ride a KTM 690 Rally : « I Still believe that
the KTM 690 Rally is the ultimate machine. This is the first time I will be racing the
KTM 690 and I’m really looking forward to this achievement ».
The OiLibya Rally of Morocco 2012 is like a revival : « For me it’s a roots return.
This painfully experience did not damage my motivation and I think I’m now stronger
than before. I’m still looking for the ultimate adventure. I like to focus on one thing at
a time, and do my best to complete and make a success ». However, there are two
things which may frighten Kobus : « Heights and snakes ! Luckily, in Morocco, there
is not much heights where I will be going but snakes… I still need to find out a bit
more ».
Jacobus will come not only for pleasure. « I’m riding also to spread a message. I
would like to make people aware to the « lack of shoes » in Africa. Twenty millions
children in Africa don’t have shoes. Shoes mean dignity, integrity and future.
Unfortunatly the fund raising part is still lacking from donors. I would love that
maximum people be aware this is a basic need of life that everyone should have the
right... »

A (terribly translated) update from Marc Coma:

"It was a shame because we were doing a good job. The shoulder does not hurt too much, I have stabilized. Yesterday at the hospital put me shoulder Errachidia in place and now we have to wait for the tests I made in Barcelona.
The fall was important, he had a problem with the trip, and did not work well. He was on an off-track with grass-camel, an area somewhat bumpy and twisty. Cyril saw before and decided to try to squeeze a little trap and sail it. After a few curves, crossed a wadi and when they sped, I should find grass-camel and went for ears.
As I said, the drop was significant. I saw immediately that I had hurt. At first there seemed to fractures, but fortunately it seems radiographs indicate that dislocation, so that we can be optimistic that there is nothing broken.
This afternoon we arrived in Barcelona and go straight to the Dexeus Clinic. They spend MRI to see exactly the extent of the injury. I can not say much more. We'll see who can do the tests and the results given to evaluate recovery times. Thank you for caring for my state. "

Nice pic - Where you getting your pics from SteveD??
My complete lack of riding ability is made up for by lurking on lots of web sites  :mwink:. That particular picture is from Frans Verhoeven's twitter feed, quite a lot are on http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=831523&page=65 For example the picture below, with a comment that Darryl is heading off in the wrong direction !
Wotz up?

Good news for Dakar, also via advrider:
"Marc Coma yesterday returned from Casablanca and went through the Dexeus clinic to undergo a more accurate scan, after which he practiced in the hospital of Errachidia, where it was examined after his fall in the third stage of the Rally Morocco.

ICATME Traumatology of the Institut Universitari Dexeus team performed a three-dimensional CT scan and a magnetic resonance of high field of the left shoulder, which confirmed a conminuta fracture of the left posteriolateral (tip of the head of the humerus). The need for surgical intervention was ruled out and after freeze arm, Coma was discharged. You have to rest and within a few days you can start functional recovery.

Marc Coma: "I go review happy, because the diagnosis is better than expected us after the fall and immediately start with the recovery." This slightly alter our plans in preparation for the Dakar, but I am encouraged, because if all goes as it must be, it not condition us the participation in the competition, or the level to which we have to reach. "Now I can continue training, because the lesion allows me to work with my physical therapist doing cardiovascular work, among many other things, and the prognosis is that there should be no difficulties to recover completely within a few weeks".

Darryl appears to have lost quite a bit of time to Riaan. Looks like the speculation that he made a nav error was correct.

Mr Depres seems to be having should we say a quiet day. I guess just managing his lead, taking no risks?
The same can't be said for Sam Sutherland. He's having a flyer, as is Joan Barreda.

The leading bunch are all in now.
Mr Depres still has a healthy lead for tomorrow, with a few fast guys ahead of him. Smart tactics, I think.
Riaan has been moving up steadily today.
Darryl's not having such a great day?

I am getting excited about the Dakar, now that there are local guys racing again. I think both Riaan and Daryl will be much stronger this year with the experience and this preparation Rally under their belt.  :thumleft:

I do Agree that it will help, But how much is the question. The Dakar is in a league of its own. I think that Darryl will have a blast with his second Dakar, he knows what to expect!

The boys are riding well! I am happy Sam managed another Good Day today!

It will depend A LOT on how fit they are at the time and how focused they can stay through the three weeks. Alfi Cox always said you first mission it the get to the last week and then you can think about racing. Many/Most times the Dakar is won or lost in that last 5 days of racing. That is why the top ten is always there. They are not always the fasted byu they stay fast enough for every day of the Dakar. That is a big part of it. Well that is what I think looking at it from the outside.

But he missed a waypoint and has been penalised 30 minutes.

Absolutely. Quite a few of the guys have had gyppo guys big time from the food. Interesting that Cyril is eating from rat packs.

I'm so chuffed with Darryl and Riaans effort that have been very consistent. Darryl is really struggling with the navigation, I think he could be in the top ten if he can get this sorted out. I'm pretty sure he going to push hard in the Dakar this coming year, he wants to do well in it. At least the navigation is a little bit easier (not much!) in the Dakar.

Riaan is doing amazingly well for a virgin rally guy. Both these guys will be up there if they get more time on the ground.

Watching this rally makes me want to ride so badly! This has been a super exciting rally, and the closest finish in a long time.

BB i agree. A nice closely contested Rally is great for the sport. It gets rid of the some of the mud gate scandal. Every Team is Stepping it up. Husky`s with Cancalved and Barreda, Yamaha with Fretigne and Casteu, Honda now and as always the KTM lot!

It has been really exciting to watch from a computer and all one can hope is that they actually convince Redbull to televise the next events, I mean if they can show a chop jumping from a baloon in the Stratos phere surely a rally is an easy thing to do! Maybe some live cames at  the PC,s and start and finish?

This all said and done as a spectator,  like you I would rather be riding myself!

From http://www.broadlinkktmrally.co.za:

"The 2 riders started out well today (Friday) but as a result of the dust and a slight navigational error Darryl went over the bars and lost some time to his team mate. Riaan is doing well with navigation and along with his smooth riding style he managed a 12th in the penultimate day of the Rally.
Tomorrows day (Saturday) is a short stage of only 171 km of timed stretch and 206 km overall. Organisers say it is short but technically tricky and will take the riders back into the small dunes.
Riaan and Darryl are lying 14th and 15th respectively...... Good job guys!!"

I reckon Honda have to be pretty chuffed with themselves right now. Same for the Huskys.

From http://www.broadlinkktmrally.co.za

"BROADLINK KTM RALLY Team Riders Darryl Curtis and Riaan van Niekerk finish The MOROCCO RALLY in a respectable 14th and 15th overall.
Riaan, the less experienced of the two managed to come in ahead off Darryl to claim 14 position in his first International Rally.
The 2 riders used this event as a training ride leading up to the 2013 DAKAR RALLY along with many other big names. They were part of the KTM Factory Team and had the same treatment as Rally Champions Marc Coma and Cyril Despres. Darryl said that it was a real privilege to "pit" with these guys and they learnt a lot. Sadly Coma crashed out early in the event with a dislocated shoulder and fellow team mate Despres went on to win overall.
Well Done to the 2 BROADLINK KTM Rally Team riders.
Darryl and Riaan would like to thank their sponsors BROADLINK, GRINDROD LOGISTICS, LEADERTREAD, EMPERORS PALACE, MTN and KTM as well as all their supporters (that's US  :ricky:)
