Title: Mark and Mal's fabled farm...
Post by: Malibu on November 02, 2012, 08:27:42 am
Ok, so I decided to start a photo thread of all the special views and stuff on our farm... and as we'll soon be building a special WD hang-out spot there, I guess we can start with the pretty stuff already...

 :drif:

We have ordered 2000 macadamia trees which we will receive in 3 years time and will order another 2000 at the end of next year.
Water is plenty, Borehole with beautiful clear drinking water and the our farm is bordered by a stream on one side and a small river on the other. We also have 10 water rights so water is not a problem.

We have a small fruit orchid which gives us fruit for bottling/preserve etc and have started growing plenty black berries. This weekend we are taking up 20 Protea plants which the florists in Nelspruit are interested in buying from us when flowering.

Also testing out tree lucerne, planting 10 trees this weekend.

Are you going to have a sign at the entrance, " KTM only" or are other bikes also permited? :pot:

I gave up on tree lucerne. The rabbits eat it faster than it grows. Its not as hardy as the smous claims.

There will be a KTM route and a other bike route  >:D

The riding in the area is stunning and on the farm there will be a nice little uphill and down hill track  :thumleft:

Thanks for the heads up, we will be inclosing the plants with chicken wire to protect them

unfortunately not yet, we still live in JHB but go to the farm at least once a month. We plan to move out to the farm in 10 yrs time, hopefully by then, if plans come together, the farm will be generating a living income.

Will take pics of the Bonzai's this weekend.

Many happy days there for you guys!

Sorry, missed your question...

It's immediatly under Kaapsehoop, where the cliff face drops off into the valley below (home of the Blue Swallow).
Between Nelspruit and Barberton, but high enough on the slopes that it's a good 5 - 6 degrees cooler than those places... :)

Was the farm Mom was living on, with her brothers owning the farms on either side and that one.  Her eldest brother wanted to sell, so after some negotiations, we decided to buy... that way Mom is our farm manager, she keeps her stunning home, lives with her entire family around her, we still have insane family events (Christmas, New year and Easter) with family flying in from all over the globe to join.... and Mark and I have our own first home together too! ;D

Many years ago, when the kids were small, we lived on a smallholding just outside PE. Nothing special, but it had space and was a magic time in our lives.

Enjoy it !

space... so very true. when on the farm I get up before the sun, throw on shorts and t-shirt and go for a walk. It gives me time to plan, think and just enjoy what Judy, her Mum and I are putting together. It takes me about 1.5 hrs to walk around and through the farm, I can see what all needs to be done and there is a lot, but for some reasons this is not a problem. All the fencing needs mending or replacing. I need to put in 2 x 50 000 liter reservoirs and all the drip irrigation for the Mac trees before they get delivered. We have just cleared about 1.5 hectors of bluegum and lantarner so all the stumps need to be pulled out. Then we can put that area under shade cloth and plant more blackberries.

but the best part is ...we have the space in both time and land to plan and do what needs to be done. And we have the energy and love to do it.  :thumleft:

:thumleft:

Love that area! You guys have got the planning down pat. Take your time don't rush into unplanned production. Long term production gain is always better than short term yields.
Have fun guys and keep the pics coming!!!!!!!

Great pics, Judy, love that one of the water-lilly.

Did you and Mark build that little jetty? How did you set the uprights in the water? A friend has asked me to help him build a deck out over the side of his dam and has some massive logs to do it with, but the slope is really steep and the water drops off deep very quickly (it's too deep to stand about 2 meters out), so I was wondering how to do it. Are they set in waterproof concrete before you place them? I saw a thing on youtube where they dug a hole and then placed the uprights in a stack of car tyres and poured a special waterproof concrete into the tyres, but would prefer an option that doesn't leave a stack of tyres at the bottom of the lake if possible.

Unfortunately that dam is not on our property but on a farm a couple of minutes away. I go fishing there on Sundays  :thumleft: .

Sorry I have no idea how they built that small jetty. I have built jetties before using aluminium poles and pipe clamps. If the water was 2m deep we used 4m pipes and hammered them into the mud/sand. Worked very well actually.

Thanks for the reply Mark. Geoff (my mate) has already got some massive wooden poles / logs that have been treated. They're massive - about 5 meters long, with a diameter of 45cm! I have access to a mini-digger - think I might use it to excavate the bank and build a platform to work from and then dig holes for the pylons with the back-hoe from the bank, if the arm is long enough. Was just hoping you might have some insight into the task.

Enjoy your slice of paradise, it's great to read this thread. It's inspiring to see what others can achieve with hard-work and dedication.

Thanks Roadcat.....hard work and dedication  ;D that's what we did this December holidays. The only day off was the 2nd January, otherwise we worked every day on projects that we had set. We start planting in September and need to get about 4 hectors cleared before then, so out came the chain saw  >:D . Never knew there was a lumber jack hidden away in me.  :lol8: That was fun but serious hard work when you get it wrong, nothing like dropping a good size gun tree in the wrong direction.

The big work is still  coming as we need to install a 50K L reservoir and lay all the irrigation pipes before we start planting, dig holes for 1500 trees that will be planted. Do the fencing to keep the goats outs. and and and......but hell it is serious fun and so satisfying to do. Nothing bets working on your own land.  :thumleft:

Ok, so we were down at the farm for the Easter Weekend, and had some work to do... Mark fixed the borehole pump, and we installed the new fireplace....

It works amazingly... draws like a train, and warms the whole house with little wood, we are super thrilled with it.

Then, Mark had the bright idea of turning the old gas geyser thing into a table... how's that look?

I have not got a clue, downloaded a lot of info from the net... We'll probably put up lattice work and run them like grape-vines for now... Will be interesting to see how they perform... Will only fruit in a few years time though if grown from seed, cuttings from producing vines produce fruit a lot sooner.

Apparently they flower on one night only and unless you have the right moth, they need to be hand pollinated. Sounds tricky! Anyways great tasting and bizarre looking fruit..

Correct, the flower only lasts one night. There are quite a few south african species of moths that may do the job but from what I have heard the local producers have to go around each night with a paintbrush and to the moth's job. Probably why they are so expensive in the shops. Always looks stunning in a fruit salad.

Sounds more hectic than it is, very easy to hand pollenate, just use a small paint brush and go through them... Apparently they are also pollinated by bats, which we have in the area.

Mom has blackberries in green houses, a lot of them, and she hand pollinates them, just takes a paintbrush and runs over the flowers... She says it's a simple procedure, while you tuck in stems and check plants.... A sort of all in one job!

Jip, forums and writing not really my thing.  I miss a lot of the gossip but rather be on 2 wheels.   ;D

Desert riding next month and it is going to be FUN!!!  500km a day for 2 days. :thumleft:
Going to be fit for Amageza!!!   >:D

How was training the past weekend?

Last weekend training was fantastic!  Really great bunch of guys and girls.
Are you at the BMW Club event this Saturday at ADA?

I want to go but rather be working on my fitness in De Wildt!  Have not decided yet.   ???
AND have not touched the 1200 in two months now!

My plan ->  Desert 1000 -> Amageza -> Dakar!!!

1200 needs a run, Mark and I are there, all your buddies including Cas... what else could tempt you?

A strip show?!

Bwahahahahaaaa, ok, ok, I'll give you a tech session, want the bike stripped or a wheel?

Heheheheeee, no trees have to planted in square holes, otherwise their roots grow in the shape of the round hole...
The larger the root base, the stronger the tree... The sooner the roots escape the original hole, the sooner the tree shows real growth!
The only thing you plant in a round hole is a bonsai!

The Gifts of Mount Olive - A poem about our valley!

Although our valley is rather small
It’s the richest valley of them all.
We all stand together in sickness and health
Mount Olive’s people are its wealth.
For this is the place we’ve decided to live
And these are the gifts that we’re able to give.

Warwick’s the lettuce man – he grows all our greens
He supplies us with spinach and chillis and beans.
Jenny brings brightness and warm loving hugs
She will feed you and love you and top up your mugs.

Do you need big yellow earth moving machines?
In his shed Danie Noppe has the means.
And beautiful Elmi, when she gets a gap –
She can make you a wonderful aerial map.

Almarie Anderson will give you advice
On how to stay healthy and keep yourself nice.
And Vaughan is our medic (when he’s not in Iraq)
So you can’t break your leg until he gets back!

Has your tractor or bakkie broken down?
Jan can repair them at his workshop in town.
And Charlotte is always happy to bake
Her extra special chocolate cake.

If you’re needing a truck, or a load to be moved,
Graeme is the person whose experience is proved.
Elsa can cater and puts on a feast –
Her pecan nut tart is the best in the East!

Grant and Charmaine give such wonderful “do’s”
When they leave for Malawi, we all get the blues.
Carmen and Kelsey, our beautiful girls
Your love of our family is your gift to our world.

Exotic and lovely is our artist Dalene
She and Carl make a wonderful team.
Michael van Niekerk, he’s our Mike No 3.
And his metal work’s really something to see.

Martin helps with fertilizer if he can
And if bees are your problem, then he is your man.
Dizy’s the wine expert – cute and petite
And she also the champion at doing our feet!

Alan – there’s nothing that he can’t repair
If it’s help you need – he’s always there.
He’s the fire fighting expert, he’ll sort our your pump
And he’ll help you to fix up a leak in your sump.
Val’s gift is with words; she’s the family poet
And she’s also the expert on how to raise goats!

Jilly’s the carer, her home is her pride
She’s a woman of wisdom and God is her guide.
She’s our beacon of light and love profound
Her welcome is warm and her smiles abound.
(And her chocolate biscuits are the best around!)

Nana’s our centre – the clan matriarch
As our storyteller, she’s made her mark!
She can knit you warm socks or a nice woolly hat
Or lend you a book – but you MUST give it back!
(And we’re all in her prayers to keep us on track.)

Marks’ expertise is varied and wide
He can find you some ore, or teach you to ride
And Judy’s the best one to ask about bikes
And where to go riding, or do waterfall hikes.

Mike van Rensburg’s an organized man
And whatever you’re building, he’ll print you a plan.
He’s also the guy who takes care of our roads
A big thank you for that, we appreciate it loads.
Sally’s an outstanding hostess of note
And her functions are famous, they get all our votes!

Mike Rochat is our chopper mechanic
But until you have bought one, there’s no need to panic.
Mo and her camera record all the fun
And her albums on Facebook are second to none!

Gary can build you a house or a mall
Or a skyscraper seventy-eight storeys tall
Ashleigh’s compassion will encourage you to talk
She will help you decide on which path you will walk.

Abigail Anne is a bright little star
She’s your expert on books, and she reads without par.
Sophie’s a whirlwind, our cute drama queen
She’ll be riding wild horses before she’s fifteen.
Dan is our “Man”, he’s a tractor fanatic
He’ll be helping you sort out your new automatic.

Elspeth’s our dairymaid, gentle and kind
Her pets and her animals are loved for all time.
Fiona’s your company trouble-shooting ace
She gives sanctuary to horses and a safe loving place.

So this is Mount Olive, its tapestry glows
With colour and life, as the energy flows
It’s not soil, trees and bushes, it’s gifts and it’s love
And it’s sheltered and blessed by the great God above.

Val van Rensburg

Off to the farm this weekend, need to stack out the next area for the 600 trees we are planting after winter. The great thing is that the 600 trees are all from nuts we were given and have been planted in bags 12 months ago. Come summer and they will be ready to put in the ground. Let the digging begin.  ;D

What's the trick to propagating nut trees from seeds? I have some walnut trees that bear well, but are getting old. They still have a few nuts on them currently. How do you get them to sprout?
Title: Re: Mark and Mal's fabled farm...
Post by: Malibu on June 10, 2014, 07:47:29 am
With the Mac's we test them by floating them in water, those that float are discarded... some guys grind the nut a little with a grinder, some use warm water, some just plant...
A few weeks later, leaves are sprouting.  We only push half the nut into the soil.
As soon as the stem is thick enough, we graft them.
There is a new technique where they are grafted from seedling, but it has not been tested enough for our liking yet.
I'd imagine there may be a few different techniques for the different nut types...

OK, You plant in spring I presume, and then graft onto which rootstock?

I see nothing is as simple as you might hope:

Quote
Commercial walnut varieties are grown from specially selected variants ("cultivars") grafted onto a robust root stock (usually American Black Walnut or a walnut hybrid). While some isolated walnut trees grown from seed may produce satisfactory crops, these typically produce trees with poor (or no) nuts worth collecting. While like with other fruiting trees like apples, the very rare variant may produce a "Granny Smith", don't count on it. So don't waste your time trying to propagate from fresh walnuts from your local greengrocer. Very few will germinate and, if they do, the progeny are unlikely to produce usable nuts (and you will only find this gloomy prognosis confirmed several years later).

Probably easier just to buy trees from a nursery.

OK, You plant in spring I presume, and then graft onto which rootstock?
The guys are harvesting at the moment, so we plant the nut immediately.  The fresher the nut is, the better chance of them taking.  So we have a few thousand bags ready at the moment for planting.  Also, the irrigation system and green house is prepared to take the seedlings through winter.  Dependent on growth, grafting will take place as soon as the stems are thick enough to take the grafts. (Little finger thick)  6 - 8 months time.
The seed we are using for root stock is the A1's, apparently the best root stock, together with Baumonts.
We will be grafting 816's, as the nut is larger, is ground harvested and the quality is exceptional, realising very good returns on sale. The grafting allows us to obtain a crop within 4 - 5 years, as opposed to non-grafted stock that only starts producing in 7.
We may introduce other cultivars later as things change in the market, but I think we have started with a good base.

That is really pretty there M, you guys are living in heaven, but lots of hard work I know.  I grew up in the Barberton area and some of my fondest memories are of the Lowveld.  Nothing anywhere else in the world smells like it.

Would love to live there, we only get to visit for a few days every now and again... my Mom is the "manager" there and she loves it!  :)
She gets all the daily things done and we get to appreciate all her and the guys hard work...

Ok, so, I attended a grafting course and learnt everything (Mmmmm) about grafting Mac's and other stuff...
Was fantastic, had Lewellin Bolt as my teacher for the day.
He is the founder of the Mac industryin SA, started working with them in the 50's and built the industry to where it is today.
What an amazing guy.  Between him, and Bill (a friend who is a retired seed scientist, and worked with Lew from when they were 18) Mom and I were swamped with information.
So, now, the sticks have been prepared for grafting in a few weeks time, and in the meantime, we (Mom and I) have air layered a few fruit trees and others trees...

So 800 trees need grafting before the end of the year... and then 2000 next year... all ready in the nursery!
We (mom) is having such terrific success in the nursery with Macadamia seedlings,  that we are being asked to grow for others... so we may have to extend the tree nursery!

All is going great.

Oh, and we bought a tractor!  A RED one!  :)

Little Red (the 650 KLR) and Big Red (the tractor) will be bed mates!

Maybe we can breed some middle reds..

So, the best news ever!  All the trees Mom and I grafted over the holidays have taken.  Our little course seems to have paid off.  So we grafted a few avo trees and air-layered the pear trees.

Some pics of the Mac's in the green house.

The large ones are ready for grafting, the medium ones will be ready in spring, and the others are still baby's...

We only pop down now and again... Mark is at the bike festival.at the moment. Go visit him at the adventure track... He's running the test KTM, Huskys and the AT's. For anyone not in the know, he's with Woema and Mefo permanently now...

Anyone wanting to visit, too cool, mom loves visitors... Farm 22, Mount Olive. Gumtree Farm and Cottage on Google Maps... Mail me for a map for the better road in...
We also usually comment when going down.
Mark Taylor has booked us for ride when we go down again. 😃  too cool. Can't wait...
