Title: BUNGYCOOL's Visit and Our RR of a Thumping Lekker Trip - COMPLETE !
Post by: Gérrard on December 05, 2012, 09:19:39 pm
This is an RR in  three parts :

Episode 1 : The Introduction

Episode 2 : Bungycool's Ride

Episode 3 : My ride

Episode 1 is done and you will read about it shortly. As of writing this, episode 2 & 3 is still to happen. As the title indicates, the hero of the story is my 600 Tenere, whom we trust will perform without flaw over the next 10 days or so.

                                                                      Episode 1 - The Introduction

Every story as you know has a beginning. If we were just to do the RR at the end of the ride you will ask yourself  "How the hell did this happen ?" So let me tell you.

I've done a lot of riding this year and was fresh out of excuses, but you mos know, I have to ride. bungycool is on a visit from Scotland and needed a bike for this weekend. He will tell you his story.

And so the plan came together. Lyn and the kids want to go to Cape Town next weekend for a few days. That means I have a lift to CT. So, I lend the XT to bungycool, he flies to PE, rides around and rides the bike back to CT, drops it off with Goose, I make my way to CT next weekend, kuier with Goose, visit a couple of Dogs, ride with 2SD the next day and then ride the bike home. BRILLIANT

The plan gets discussed, arrangemants made and all is good.  :3some:

Last Sunday I dust the Old Warrior, which has not been taken out since the Old School Bash, off and make sure its good to go. Of course it is... its a Yamaha  :lol8:

Jim(bungycool) flew in this afternoon and was collected by Warren(TornadoF5) at the airport. He will stay with them as one of his reasons for coming this way is to visit with Warren, Amelia and Morgie.

Later in the evening he rocks up at my place to collect the bike and camping gear. As I'm doing the trip back over a few days, I will need my stuff, so no use for him to bring any. He uses mine on his way back and then its there on the bike for my trip. I love it when a plan comes together

The anticipated meeting. We've never met before and its just amazing when Dogs get together how easy the companionship is.

We sort the bike and pack the gear.

Oh ! Jim is the good looking oke on the right  He's never ridden a Thumper before, so there's a bit of discussion around the topic. He understands its going to be a gentle ZEN ride and is clearly excited about it. I have the immediate sense that my bike is in good hands.

Of course one has to start the bike before it goes, this is a thumper and the 'dreaded' kicksart is explained. Like I've said elsewhere, I figured it and its now a breeze. You just gotto get the hang of it.

I demonstrate and then Jim goois. After a few tries he gets it sorted. Easy as pie

Now comes the moment of truth... Jim's on his own, everybody is watching in anticipation and he proceeds to kick his moer off... NO GO !

OK, we have been starting the bike on and off, so maybe its just a bit confused where its at. Let me have a look, as we are more intimate with one another.

OH ! Jim... you gotto switch the bike on  :imaposer: Stage fright  :eek7: Sorted, she fires and off he goes.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip Boet.

I'll do a quick post on behalf of Bungycool aka Jim aka Jimbo....

After we got home from Jupiter's place last night, we sat around discussing Bungycool's trip and the excitement was clearly evident in Jim's sparkling eyes, followed by the usual banter till about 10pm, after which I was concerned he would fall asleep on the road and chased him off to bed. This morning the excitement hit me first and I was awake at 4:30am waaaayyyy before Jim, because I think as a biker I could envisage the trip with clarity and those distinct feelings of anxiousness, excitement and pure glee were there bubbling away like a pot on the fire.
Kept sitting around waiting for Bungycool to wake up so decided to coax him outta bed  and opened up the bacon cooked some eggs and made sure he was fuelled then off to pack the bike. To reiterate what Jupiter said that there is a wonderful almost unspoken bond between us adventure bikers and Jim is absolutely no exception to the rule, with gusto and the easy adventure spirit, which will have him enjoying this journey to the fullest.

I took the bike out for Jim while he was still asleep, decided I would give it a kick or two to get the oil moving and left it for him. Weather today is overcast cool and is going to make for great riding.

So fed & psyched
Here Bungycool with a smile that says it all

The super beautiful 600 really looking the part for a great adventure

Finally Jim as he kicks the beautiful old lady into life and roars off on a journey that will reward his soul abundantly as only those in the know can concur

Godspeed my friend!

Great post Warren. Gave me goose flesh when the Old Girl roared into life. Lets keep it rolling if you hear from Jim. From the way he spoke this trip is very special to him.

When Jim tells his part we'll get the whole story, but just to keep you in the loop, he came to SA on this visit to settle his late mother's affairs and the other reason for his sojurn to the EC, is to visit his father in Hogsback, which is where he is off to today. He will thereafter meander back to CT.

Yup, just past the river crossing and standing at the lookout point.

When he said last night that he was going through Dubbeldrift and if the drift's OK, I did not click. This morning I realised its the deep one he wants to cross, that I could not do on the 660 the other day.  :eek7:

But, seems then they did alright. That old 600 can take seriously deep water, as long as you keep going.

I phoned to check the water level yesterday. He said it was very doable with a dual sport.

This was what it was like on the way to the national bash. Very slippery.

Hey wow thanks guys(said on behalf of miss Teeni the yammie teneré!) who truly is the star of this show. Up here in the hogsback now and it's bucketing down. Hope I'll be able to get out the hard way tomorrow. What an astounding day I've had starting off with the five star brekfast and sendoff services of warren (Tornadof5) praying with their family and getting a very good hug from Morgie. I've been refusing multiple applications from the estate agents to buy farms. I gave up counting species at 50. Saw a lekker herd of giraffe. Forded a HUGE crossing. Rode a road my dad last rode on when he was 10! Had kif weather all day found out that the Teeni doesn't like over 100kmh but will get there happily what a phenomenal day. I am at loss for words. I will firm up this report on the flight home but for sure I aim to report back before Gerard does his return leg! Can't post photos from this thing but am using Andrews camera so I'm sure he'll reciprocate. Big day tomorrow so I'm going to enjoy my indoor boerie Braai spuds and garlic. Jim

He took a dead end short cut just outside Willowmore, previously a public road, @ 6pm he was going to have a beer with the farmer and then push on to Willowmore.

I suspect some Eastern Cape hospitality has got the better of him as his tracker still sits in the main farmhouse and now his phone is off.

He had a long day and he's not a heavy drinker so it's probably lights out till tomorrow.

SMS from him a moment ago:

"Long story. Short version is wallet dropped out of pocket 1k from the game lodge I stayed at filled up with fuel in willow more and left the phone as security so they could charge it for me. All well. Have wallet. "

I was up early this morning calling the guest house I'd suggested he stay in in Willowmore asking if they'd seen him. The lady tracked him down to a guest farm where he had stayed the night but there is no cell reception. So at least I knew he had a good sleep. His Dad called this morning as he'd also not heard from him.

Flying solo and wanting to get away from it all can be a las when others are living ones joirney vicariously through technology and forums.

Bikes looking good Jup and looks like he's having a whale of a time!

Good news guys. Thanks. He's going to be knackered, but it was always going to be a push getting back in two days with some detours. All that matters is that he gets home safely.

Said he cmae via Rooiberg, Jup. And lost his wallet but found it again but lost some time.
His cell battery was almost finished and they didn't have a USB port at Jam Tarts.
He used my phone to call Goose - riding back I felt bad because his wife was also calling and I should have told him he's welcome to use my phone to call her but didn't think of it.
He'll be fine - there's not reception everywhere on the R62.

Obviously Jim was starving........... with Kamanya not doing too badly and a moerse Milktart disappeared in a flash

I'd forgotten to post a few pics of our visitors prior to Bungycool arriving.........  Monkeyboy & MissM made an early turn hoping to meet the man........ sadly he was still some distance from Cape Town at that stage!

Had to laugh at Monkeyboy..........  he mentioned how amazed he was that I was more interested in taking pics of the "Dominator"  than of the GS800 standing outside...... I explained it was all about the "houding and attitude" of the old bike......... STUNNING!!

Cheers for making us laugh MissM...........  hope you had a good evening!   :thumleft:

Got this PM from Goose. Thought I want to share it (edited just a little, hope he does not mind) now Jim can't hide anything from us in the RR. We want to hear it ALL.  And don't worry to much over the bike. just McGyver it so I can get home. This is what they were made for and built to take it. Like Jan Staaldraad said... no bike drops like an XT and still carries on.

Well the old XT made it..... and it seems that there's newfound respect by both Bungycool and Kamanya for this old lady.

Standing in the garage with the XT550's = they were stunned to learn that the bikes are around 30 years old.......... quite a feat for the old girls

A few small issues with the bike - but nothing major. I sorted the bash plate with 2 pop-rivets while Kamanya fiddled with the Indicator. I will see if I can sort that properly - ....

Jim's "mishap"  obviously left a few small scars......

The right-hand Tooltube broke, so that needs to be replaced. The brake pedal is pointing in a weird direction, so a bit of straightening required.
The rear tyre needs to be replaced and he was also concerned about the front tyre........ however Kamanya semed to think it was still ok and could do some distance.

Seems there's an oil-leak as well..... his boots were covered in oil, and the boots are buggered - seems the right boot "burst" open on the foot area.....

Groete

 :lol8: :ricky:
Ok so some of this RR has been leaked. I have to say it has been a very interesting experience on so very many levels. I got to meet people I probably never would have without this forum. I've had hours of pleasure on a total strangers 30year old bike. Ive been shown favour and grace in abundance danced under the mighty Milky way on a clear Karoo night on my own in a game reserve while marvelling at Gods creation. Ive even cried tears that noone will ever see into my (borrowed)helmet over people I never knew though they are long gone.

So this is how the story began, My mom passed away from cancer complications in March, and her house has had an offer on it so I was required to come over and sort through her stuff and decide how we were going to divide it all up. Kinda like dividing up the memories of a lifetime and trying to condense it all into a box full of stuff that makes some kind of sense. As I would be leaving my lovely family behind due to other commitments I decided to try and see if I could squeeze a trip up to see my dad whom we hadnt seen in about six years. After looking at Bike hire prices I was a bit stunned (grand a day plus R3.3 perKm plus a 12grand deposit) I thought ok lets see if we can organise WD style. Hence this bungycools offer,
Jupiter (Gerard aka the Gman) stepped up to the plate with more generosity than an estateagent bent on a sale. Offering not just the bike but also camping gear and also to fetch it back from Cape Town – although I dont feel too bad about the last one as he does enjoy a ride every now and then!

Thus after a bit of tooing and froiing and a good bit of planning and replanning the Zen trip formed!
I hopped onto the plane CapeTown bound with more pentup excitement than a matric student on his last day with a bottle of JD stashed under his bed!

Four days later having shaked out moms ashes at froggy pond in silvermine and ransacked her house for treasures, I hopped on a mango flight (met die helfde van my swaer Kamanya se Fiets toer goeters in die trommel in) PE bound. TornadoF5 and Morgie welcomed me – I got the biggest hug from Morgie, and Warren treated me like a long lost brother ( miss you already bru!)

Gerard wasnt ready for me yet so we tucked into the lovely Amelias apricot chicken while being grilled by Morgies gran! Then off to Gerards for the Thumper lecture! With a bit of a flouish he packed tent and bags of this that and the next thing into the oxford panniers the only tool I used was the 17mm spanner to tighten the RHS foot peg. But as we say her in soggy Scotland rather be looking at it than for it! After the lecture as can be seen in an earlier post I rode off into the dusk to park up at Warrens and kip. Had a very good chat with Warren and Amelia before being chased off to bed. Took ages to fall asleep but eventually woke up to the smell of bacon frying.
Day 1
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-HZSLMh5/0/M/DSCN3223-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2262779601&k=HZSLMh5&lb=1&s=A)
Yes warren was more excited than I was! He'd promised me a slice of toast and a quick run off – this turned into poached eggs, bacon and toast, cups of tea until I felt like a tick on a Brahma bull! Then Prayers with the family, huge hugs from all attending and a bit of a lump in my throat tempered by the excitement of it all I kicked life into the thirty year old lump of metal and fed in the petrol, she roared into life and with a shiver of excuberance danced out the gate!

And thus the ride began in earnest, Warren led me off to the petrol station, where Tenie sucked up almost 30l of road munching juice, then off to the start of the N2. A last wave and a twist of her ear and the PE welcome team was gone. Of course a few miles down the road I had to stop to check everything was where it should be and to try figure out Kamanyas GPS as it kept telling me to gooi a Uee on the N2 but I managed to follow the signs to Grahamstown. It got a bit confusing but it took me about two days to figure out the timings of the turns on the Garmin! However about twenty minutes outside of Grahamstown I was rewarded with the first sighting of the distant blue hills

A few short Kms later turned off onto my first bit of long distance dirt on my ownsome on 2 wheels. Man was I chuffed to take this photo.
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-B2X2gWL/0/M/DSCN3228-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2262785740&k=B2X2gWL&lb=1&s=A)
And a few others at the same time
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-CWJ9R2n/0/M/DSCN3229-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2262785801&k=CWJ9R2n&lb=1&s=A)  (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-snjhjg3/0/M/DSCN3230-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2262786419&k=snjhjg3&lb=1&s=A)
So on to the Sam Knott reserve. By this time I had learnt to stop and not turn the bike off as I hadn't yet mastered the life into lump kicking finesse and would end up looking like a rather sweaty bear humping an unassuming rottweiler until she coughed into a fit of giggles at my attempts! So with the engine barking away and unpacking my my rusty Xhosa I tried to explain to the lady at the gate that I was going to visit my Dad in the Hogs back. She looked at the bike and me with eyes rolling and said something about the double drift being deep.  Me being the eternal optimist thought I'd go and have a look see before turning around for a laugh! I saw so much game and had my eyes doing Chameleon style that I almost had the estate agents looking to sell me a farm. Sho what a beautiful country I have left behind and really long to come back to.  Anyway I digress, it was such hard work opening and closing those Rhinoproof gates I had to take this photo of this koggelmandertjie,
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-5HwxHfN/0/M/DSCN3232-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2262788757&k=5HwxHfN&lb=1&s=A)

so after a bit of really enjoyable riding through the reserve (Tenie was going so well I was puttering along trying to stay below 60kmh avoiding the vlakvarkies and impala) I got to the double drift fort stopped for a quick fotie
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-QJHJ8sg/0/M/DSCN3233-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2262789661&k=QJHJ8sg&lb=1&s=A)
a short couple of bends later I came upon the moment of truth.
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-hhjjQTh/0/M/DSCN3234-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2262791694&k=hhjjQTh&lb=1&s=A)
so with a quick scan of my memory bank and realising that Kamanya had been through here a few weeks back and I was pretty sure that the photo looked like what I was looking at I took the plunge! The water was fairly deep about 18” but I took the advise – use the upstream side have thumb on kill switch head up and gas up – and the bit of advise from riding school revs up clutch control etc. Tenie pulled through with only a wee bit of a feeling we were going to be calling Warren for a trailer and a dive team! At the other side was the gnarliest steepest bit of dirt I've ever come across and I just twisted her ear and she sprang up it like a Dassie with a black eagle on its tail!
After riding a few Km's up the ridge I came to the lookout point over the river if you look down the ridge you can see the track running to double drift. I also took the opportunity to take a nice photo of one of the prickly pear flowers that had been tempting me for so long.

After this is was a pretty straight run to the hogs back.

followed by lunch at 'the edge' restaurant which serves an appetite killing very tasty meal and watched the afternoon thunderheads building,(http://imageshack.us/a/img687/6957/img1395i.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/687/img1395i.jpg/)  (http://imageshack.us/a/img201/3136/img1394j.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/201/img1394j.jpg/)

a bit of shopping for dinner and settled in for a night of listening to the rain PELTING it until about 11pm..

Day 2
the intention was to do a dawn raid and get going about 5:30 due to the impressive heat and humidity levels encountered the day before but I just couldn't get all my stuff together before 7:30 ( I think to be honest I really didn't want to say goodbye to dad both of us instigating further topics to be explored until the inevitable final hug and goodbye.) I headed down millers pass from here
 (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-MdNPcLB/0/M/DSCN3253-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2262812374&k=MdNPcLB&lb=1&s=A)
and was pleasantly surprised that I didn't struggle with it too much, (the lady at 'the edge' had said the previous week they had taken in a woman who was still visibly shaken and had refused to drive in the 4x4 with her husband!)
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-hhpwssC/0/M/DSCN3255-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2262813113&k=hhpwssC&lb=1&s=A)
but on the flatter bits where the mud monster lurks in the shady patches I got to have some earnest agricultural rights negotiations underway, with me both high and low siding out of the mud. And once agin doing the sweaty bear impersonation thang again!
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-4TMmqfL/0/M/DSCN3257-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2262816363&k=4TMmqfL&lb=1&s=A)

by this stage I had learnt to find a shady tree to hide under while waiting for the carbs to drain and the old girl to gather her wits about her again. But boy was I missing the Katoom and the happybutton!
By this stage my mouth was dry and my mojo had evaporated much like the puddles were! And then this monster appeared so sitting down I gave myself a right good talking to loosen up the elbows head up trust the old girl! And sailed through the mud infested concrete drif!
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-tVmkcFB/0/M/DSCN3261-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2260992273&k=tVmkcFB&lb=1&s=A)
and on up Katberg pass – now we were looking at more technical riding and I was starting to really love it. Washed out rutted but clean rock roads. Pretty little forest gulleys black eagle pairs and a wild horse on the peak. It just rose within me a primordial instinct to climb higher and drive deeper coupled with the thought that I was following tracks my ancestors probably had (my people came from a farm near Alice on the Tyume river.)

I got up to the neck and was welcomed with this sight
 (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-XL4dswV/0/M/DSCN3264-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2260994962&k=XL4dswV&lb=1&s=A)
oh and it got worse but there was no way that I was stopping to take photos for anyone, but they are indelibly printed in my minds eye! Roads that only a bike a horse or a man could traverse! Then a drink to Graham and my Mom, a tear and a lump in the throat. (also the earliest I have ever had a drink!)
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-kkqGnXn/0/M/DSCN3267-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2260997828&k=kkqGnXn&lb=1&s=A)

followed by a long walk back to Tenie who had been watching this mud pool with anticipation!
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-Z7FtBgk/0/M/DSCN3270-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2261000898&k=Z7FtBgk&lb=1&s=A)
down the valley we came upon the old way about these hills so Tenie had to do some posing, after I had chased the red francolin away!(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-WhksZRX/0/M/DSCN3272-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2261002441&k=WhksZRX&lb=1&s=A)
Arriving in Adelaide I filled up, trapped about a bit, took a call from my wife who was reeealy missing me, asked directions from a policeman but ultimately settled on some instruction from Kamanya (who was tracking me, by this time I felt like a star in a soap, what with people directing me and strangers getting really excited about what I was doing!) to get a stomach full and trust the GPS a bit in order to get to Willowmore. This led me the Stoep,
 (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-VvBSQGL/0/M/DSCN3275-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2261005264&k=VvBSQGL&lb=1&s=A)
As I walked in the door Cheryl and Norman (of Three farmers and a Greek RR) call me over chat and tell me that any time we are in the area they would love to entertain, Norman told how he had broken his KLR and we sat I drank and drank and vacuumed a burger like there was a Matriek eyeing it up in the Koshuis saal! Said our goodbyes and headed back out to the furnace!
We ended up running from the storm that was brewing over the hills
 (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-X3WgC2z/0/M/DSCN3278-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2261007291&k=X3WgC2z&lb=1&s=A)
and at one point I actually received a very welcome few drops which sizzled on my jacket and joined the general steam! I was loving every minute every smell every bird – Id put earplugs in by now and could only hear the songs playing in my head! Life is good! And for the foreigners I had to put in a typical dorp huis!
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-CrzSBNM/0/M/DSCN3281-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2261009840&k=CrzSBNM&lb=1&s=A)
and so with a quick twist of Tenies ear the frontier area was left behind.
 (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-mnPfCcS/0/M/DSCN3282-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2261009872&k=mnPfCcS&lb=1&s=A)
and the long straight roads of the Karoo started
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-5BvcRfV/0/M/DSCN3283-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2261012521&k=5BvcRfV&lb=1&s=A)
Also my Butt was starting to kill me so I stopped more frequently to take photos of the natives like this over grown skink and his buddy the local speed bump (I'm sure it is illegal for local municipalities to not paint the speed bumps and have them higher than 14”??)
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-s3Msk5t/0/M/DSCN3284-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2261012186&k=s3Msk5t&lb=1&s=A) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-6GGzWRg/0/M/DSCN3289-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2260952458&k=6GGzWRg&lb=1&s=A)
I also started to get a bit arty and tried  to use the bike as a sunshield
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-S335DDh/0/M/DSCN3286-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2261015128&k=S335DDh&lb=1&s=A)

Between Kliplaat and Willowmore the Gps wanted me to cross over a gate into a farmers yard the sign on the gate clearly stated that entrance would not be entertained. So I unearthed the rusty (and now very dusty) Afrikaanse taal en toe verduidelik dat die dom goeters wat bo op die Baaik sit is vol stront en wil vir my kak aan maak. Toe se willem 'kom sitmaar, drink bietjie bier op die stoep' Turns out he doesnt own the whole farm just the buildings and is a knife and Blackpowder rifle maker, He and all the kids look like they only wash their clothes once a month and it being the middle of the month! But he graciously shows me where he makes his rifles and knives (I really wish that I had taken some photos as he is really good at what he does!) and it being six o'clock the subject of where to stay comes up (I was originally going to camp wild but the ride was getting tiring and a restaurant and a BnB were on my horizon) Willem say no man they'll rip you off in Willowmore let me make a call and get you into a game lodge! Upshot is I leave Kamanya trying to figure out if I have become a victim of deliverance as I left my charger at warrens place and there isnt cell reception! And so I end up spotting Lechwe and Nyala and being catered for by the lovely Anja and Hendrik inside the reserve in the tented camp, which I had to myself,

At this stage I found out that I had a love bite from Tenie – she had given it to me when I high sided and I had been struggling the last while to change gears.
(http://imageshack.us/a/img856/9735/img1423ntu.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/856/img1423ntu.jpg/)

I ended the night staring at the stars drinking copious amounts of water and watching the milky way glide past while I just let my mind free-wheel for a bit, marvelling at the impressive and mysterious creation that has been left to us to administrate. (http://imageshack.us/a/img29/6114/img1428wt.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/29/img1428wt.jpg/)

Day 3
During the night the Civet cat under the board walk had been chasing these big furry beetles about and I think a bat had found that tent material is more dense than the surrounding bush! I awoke I think about 4am got my stuff together shovelled pronutro and about a litre of water down my throat, while marvelling at the sunrise and the beautiful campsite
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-ZNwmLfn/0/M/DSCN3300-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2260958803&k=ZNwmLfn&lb=1&s=A)
(http://imageshack.us/a/img59/3208/img1424o.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/59/img1424o.jpg/)
Paid my dues at reception. High tailing it to Willowmore I was intruiged by two things the cement roads

and the size of the graveyard at Willowmore and more importantly how many fresh graves there were – a stark reminder of how HIV is devastating the population?
(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-3qSM8hS/0/M/DSCN3303-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2260961099&k=3qSM8hS&lb=1&s=A)
on getting to Willowmore I filled up and went to get my wallet – my heart sank and my blood rose as I realised that somewhere in the last 60Kms it had fallen out as I hadnt done up the zipper on the pocket. After a quick and thorough search to make sure I hadn't broken habit and put it into a different place, phoned the manager who turned out to be a fellow boarder at De Villiers Graaf Hoer Skool! Phoned Anja and started back leaving the Iphone with the garage to charge up. (this caused Andrew Kamanya a fresh wave of anxiety as I had 'stopped') Hotfooted it back with eyes on stalks stopping at every wallet sized rock until getting to Timbila again. Anja comes out passes me the wallet saying it was just a K down the road in one of the drifts! So a much relieved Jim sets off from Timbila about 2 hours later!

going back I came across this little road safety advert

noone there but it had happened in the last 20mins!??
the rest of the trip was spent wrestling with the GPS to get me to rooiberg pass and trying to ease the ache in my bum and left leg,

The smell of this bush is quintessentially the Karoo to me its the taste of Lamb and ribbetjies the smell of camping gear and lots of very lekker memories all rolled up into a pretty vaal bush with scraggly flowers!(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-2Ds8bLp/0/M/DSCN3317-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2260972170&k=2Ds8bLp&lb=1&s=A)
This place needs a Rolux magnum! Had a great watercrossing here where I got drenched by my bow wave and a few minutes of relief from the scorching heat.

Rooiberg pass has to be the most interesting bit of road that Ive travelled on so far with mountains that look like they've been torn in wrath roads from the cederberg and transvaal aloes from the easterncape and fynbos mixed in hairpin switchbacks and marbles all over the road, its just a got to be done track!(http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/i-C5WswcJ/0/M/DSCN3323-M.jpg) (http://kamanya.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/12/12-Jims-trip/26971947_vbRSh5#!i=2260977178&k=C5WswcJ&lb=1&s=A)

So now I really put my foot down with Tenie and we push hard for cape town over the scars in the roads from the riots over Dutoits Kloof Pass and into the teeth of the South easter finally being blessed with the best view on the planet, Table mountain and her tablecloth.

then go back to Tenie and do a quick survey of her battle wounds, sumpguard had dislodged – two quick poprivets and shes good for some more! A bent footbrake lever, some glue required under the throttle grip, a new goose tube and some tlc on an indicator. Oh and she needs a new rear tyre!

Once agin to all who made this possible and to all who offered help thank you from the very bottom of my soul – it is well!

What a great epic ride. Who needs all the modern fancy bikes when you can take an old thumper like that and have so much fun.
Going to do plenty of those rides next year on my old beauty.

Well, the old girl was in desperate need of some new treads..........

So off to Tracmac this morning, which turned into a bit of a nightmare........ bought the tyre in Paarden Island..... but the tyre was in Bellville.... so off I go in this flippen heat with umpteen cars.... bloody hell eveyone wanted to go home at this time!  :eek7:
Got to Tracmac in Bellville only to be told there's been a buggerup......... the Tyre was flippen sent to the Paarden Island branch  :deal:   :patch:  :xxbah:

......... EK WAS DIE MOER IN!!!

Rode all the way back to Paarden Island and so wragtig - there's the tyre............. anyway.......... fitting done!

Jup - here's a few pics.............. showing the old girl waiting her turn for the fitment............ brand new shoe fitted and where she's sleeping in really good company..... classic to think that between the three bikes in the pic.... they have nearly 90 years between them  :thumleft:

Very unknown, but good tyre that and value for money. King KT 966. Good grip in any terrain and does not feel like a knobbly on tar. Went through two of them on my AT and got over 15 000km each time with tread left.

you know what to do with that stuff GMan? take tin empty contents into dog boil tin for half hour fill with the mulled wine and enjoy! otherwise if youre game for it theres always the traditional haggis neeps and tatties  (neeps are swede and tatties being mashed or finely chopped popatoes) or the more modern way is battered and deepfried with chips and a bottle of Barrs irnbru! enjoy and once agin thanks. I had to laugh when you said about the back tyre - probably woulda saved my butt a few times in the mud! have alekker trip and looking forward to your return RR see if you can stop in at timbila well worth it!
and also at willems place on the dirt road just as the railway line crosses the Kliplaat/willowmore rd theres a road off to the south his house is just at the end of the rd about 1km

Off to Houtbay this morning early to get a nice fresh Yellowtail............ what a whopper!  After cleaning it the "gevlekte vis" measured in at over 500mm (without a moerse head & tail) and it just fit into the basting dish.

So now I'll work the magic ......  :drif: :drif: :drif: :drif: :drif: :drif: :drif: :drif: :drif:

So G decides to pick up a snack for tonight since he's stealth camping up the road but as luck would have it Veldblom and myself had gone for a little ride to Uncle Ronnies low down & dirty house of ill repute. We must have missed each other by about an hour on the Montague road.
Luckily he persevered and waited for us to return.
Break a leg brother and remember to give a hug to Chris and Amanda from us please.

The real star of the show, after Jupiter , is his 30 year, old lady . :drif: :drif:

She's a bit leaky and a bit slow , but what a lovely personality.

With supporting cast , Jupiter ( of course  ) and Doerengone and Iwan , who couldn't keep their eyes off her.  :thumleft:

Nooit, daai bike is Yster, nie gehoes of geproes nie, heelpad rustig so teen 80km/h. Ek het nooit getwyfel hy sal jou in die Kaap en my by die huis kry nie.

Let me get started then. Usually at the end of a write-up one says your thank-you's, but then everyone has had enough of reading and don't pay attention.

Let me do so now. It's the interuptions that make the journey. I love being alone on my bike, but also enjoy meeting and kuiering along the way. As the ZEN bike is down for now, I dought I'll do my Social Tour early next year, so I used this one instead to say hello to whoever I could. To everyone who received me along the way and those who made an effort to find me and say hello, I say thanks. Each and every meeting was a good one.

A big one goes to Goose(who sorted the bike for me) and him and Jenni for putting us up for the night at their 'little place' and a great party. Also much appreciated was the Dogs who were invited for the kuier.

And of course to Jim, who accepted my invitation to use the bike, got it, and himself, to CT safely and gave me the excuse to ride it back, for what was a super trip.

As on my trips before, this showed why I enjoy being a Wilddog. Thanks all.

You will note I did not thank Bie and Kwaatjie for their special effort in putting me up last night. You see, this is not by choice... you get forced... if you're there, you will stay there. To refuse will not be good.  >:D  Thanks julle, dit was 'n lekker aand en heel gepas om die trip mee afte gesluit het.

Now I'll see you on the road.

                                                          Day 1 – Saturday 15 December 2012

I love helmet noise… you too will appreciate it if you spend twelve hours in a car with four girls, chattering, laughing, giggling, headphones blaring and arguing every now and again, especially as we got to the end of the day, we were all tired and the space was getting small. And on top of this I hate driving in a car.

But I endured it, as I knew at the end of the drive my bike is waiting for me and three days of absolute bliss it would be… and what a trip it was.

I said I wanted to leave by five, and had them in the car by ten past. Not bad.

(http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/4871/1002559r.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/201/1002559r.jpg/)

We made a quick stop in Jeffreys to drop off a part that Jim had brought over for Skipskop. Past Humansdorp I was already bored and started taking pics as we drive. Quite weird to drive looking through the camera lens

(http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/9562/1002560x.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/812/1002560x.jpg/)

As a kid I used to love it when we went on trips and would stop at a road side picnic spot for a bite. I had asked Lyn to pack us a basket and we stopped at Storms for as brekkie. The Real McCoy… boiled eggs, apricot jam sandwiches and of course coffee.

(http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8783/1002564l.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/687/1002564l.jpg/)

I go for a walk on the bridge.

(http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/9741/1002565.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/5/1002565.jpg/)

This would become the pattern for the day. Whenever we had a stop I would get myself to one side for a bit of me time away from the noise, and thus composed I can make it through the next hour.

The journey continues, Knysna,

(http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/1953/1002574su.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/89/1002574su.jpg/)

Then into to George, which concluded the first part of our journey, where we had to pick up the key for the flat where Lyn and the girls would stay in Cape Town.

(http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/2615/1002575c.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/11/1002575c.jpg/)

Now we could get over the mountain to my beloved Karoo, and a way from this dreary foggy coastalness.

Oudtshoorn. This is and will always be my most favourite town. I had the opportunity to move and live there many years ago, but Lyn would have nothing of it. Today I regret that I did not force her, and she regrets her reluctance. But that’s how it rolls. So many things could have been different. I might not have been writing this report.

By the time we get to Montagu I'm drowsy so we stop for coffee. Its now stinking hot and getting a bit late in the day. I've not been through Du Toit's Kloof tunnel for years and don't like it. Give me open space.

Wes gave me his address but the GPS won't find it. I phone and he explains and then I remember. Eventually the GPS picks it up and when we arrive it agrees with me that we at the right place.

I was hoping to get here earlier so we could kuier a bit. He got some parts for our retro bikes and I had come to pick mine up. As it turned out it was just a short hello and chat. Unfortunately he could also not make it to Goose's place that evening.

I love his style with that 650, but he's going to see his gat one day. He's not there when we arrive. Shortly I hear the Kawa come roaring on. He rips down the street, hooks a 90 degree back  brake turn and rolls into the drive-way, stops, dismounts, on the sidestand and bike off... all in one uninterrupted movement.

He's so smootth I don't think he has wrinkels on his balls  :imaposer:

Thanks bud for the trouble. Was nice seeing and chatting again, and meeting your family. Pity I missed doing a day on your trip with you.

The GPS takes us on a scenic drive to Goose's house. Nice little place he's got there

After the hello's I go to see to the bike. Always look after the horse first. There's some hard work lying ahead. Goose had seen to some things during the week, like have a new tyre fitted, and patched up a thing or two. All looked good. Still had all the oil leaks in the same places and dripping the same amounts it seemed. Jim took care of it well. I was happy that we looked ready to go. ( as the ride went I picked up a thing or two, but we'll get to that)

Crossed-up het vinnig 'n draai kom maak.

EDIT : As I re-read, to lay out the next post, I notice the mug next to me in the third pic and realize i did not give him a mention. We've kuiered so many times this year, that I almost took him for granted to be there. Sorry Andy, as always it was good too see you and meet your family this time.

                                                               Sunday – 16 December 2012

I get up early and have a long day ahead. The plan is to meet Dan in Stellenbosch, who had invited his friend Phill and GJ(Gideon) along. We would ride through the Koppies to Robertson and have a brekkie. From there I would ride to Montagu to say hello to Bokveld and then over Oubergpas, around the back to Ladismith, where I would stay over at Veltie’s place again.

As usual I won’t stay on my planned route, but since I started riding again in 2007, this was one of the best changes I had ever made.

When I pull away at Goose’s place I notice two things are wrong… the gear lever is in the wrong position and the stearing head is stuck. When Jim collected the bike I thought the headbearings were suspect. They were now positively farked, but there was nothing I could do about it now. This was going to make for some interesting riding on the gravel. The gear lever I’ll sort out at Dan’s place.

I take the N2 and after the turn-off on the R310  I feel something else now feels funny with the gear lever. It’s got play in it. I stop at the garage to fill up and jiggle it up and down. Maybe its just loose and not stripped ? But its uncomfortable, as you have to ‘gear’ twice to select a gear. This could be a problem in technical stuff.

At Dan’s place the introductions are made and coffee served. There was actually a new leak on the bike and he sorts it quickly with two new o-rings on the left enjin cover inspection bolts.

The gear lever gets McGyvered and tightened up, and that seems to sort it. Some of the splines must have stripped in one of Jim’s falls, but there seems to be enough bite to hold it. Time will tell and did.

(http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/6729/1002628m.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/694/1002628m.jpg/)

After checking the oil and topping up, Dan gets his ATGATT on  :imaposer:  and we’re on our way

(http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/7107/1002629e.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/441/1002629e.jpg/)

We go around to Phill’s house to collect him as Dan thought I would like to see his old bikes. No shit and the man’s got lots of interesting stuff. His garage is like a museum.

An interesting vice

When I sort of planned the ride I knew I would go over Helshoogtepas, the third time this year. On previous occasions I tried to find the memorial for Mrs Yammi, but could not. Just before the weekend I read a post by Yammi Super Ten in memory of his late wife and asked he explain to me where it is. I cruised slowly over Helshoogte with them in my thoughts, but missed it again.

We get to Franschhoek and its packed with super bikes, mostly I suppose there for a jaag over the pass. We encountered a few. Scary.

At the garage where we stop for fuel and cold drinks a guy pulls up on this old beauty

(http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9940/1002635zg.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/9/1002635zg.jpg/)

Up and over Franschhoekpas. Initially I battle on the bends with the stuck steering, but quickly find if I use my body weight to lean and counter steer the bike, it goes better with less chance of going over the edge

(http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/8831/1002636x.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/35/1002636x.jpg/)

(http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8505/1002637lh.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/687/1002637lh.jpg/)

(http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/1485/1002638t.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/43/1002638t.jpg/)

After Villiersdorp we get on gravel and as usual my gravel mojo is not good until the first smoke break. Now I also feel for the first time how the bike behaves on gravel and its not good. I’ll give you the load down later when we get to more serious stuff.

In the mean time Dan and Gideon cruise around on their back wheels… Eish some okes. I did not want to ask them for a poser, that I can get a pic, because that’s usually when shit happens.

(http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/3043/1002639i.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/705/1002639i.jpg/)

(http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/9945/1002641m.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/801/1002641m.jpg/)

(http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/2868/1002640w.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/541/1002640w.jpg/)

We cruise on through the hills, me at a very sedate pace, which is anyhow how I ride and really enjoy my surroundings. After a while I realise I know where I am, even though I’m  doing the route reverse,… its where we rode to and from the Breede Bash.

In Robertson its time for that brekkie at the Wimpy. IT TAKES A REAL MAN TO DRINK A PINK MILK SHAKE IN PUBLIC

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/7271/1002642d.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/442/1002642d.jpg/)

It was time to say goodbye and for me to continue on my own.

(http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4982/1002643hb.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/7/1002643hb.jpg/)

(http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/4406/1002644h.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/6/1002644h.jpg/)

(http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/2623/1002646yy.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/39/1002646yy.jpg/)

Dis so half drie toe ek daar wegkom, maar daar’s geen haas nie. Dis so 120km onthou ek rofweg Ladismith toe en ek het baie tyd. Met my spoed sal dit my so twee en ‘n half uur neem. Ek kan my tyd vat.

By die driffie doen ek ‘n BermRooster en sien amper weer my gat. Stop eers om myself weer te kollekteer.

(http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/9863/1002647k.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/407/1002647k.jpg/)

Erens teen die pas op…

(http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/847/1002648.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/541/1002648.jpg/)

… en ander kant uit

(http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/4089/1002649no.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/811/1002649no.jpg/)

ZEN. Daar’s so effe krapperige ondertoon in my gemoed.

Ek wil alleen wees.

(http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/4933/1002650cb.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/651/1002650cb.jpg/)

Soos ek ry dink ek waar ek gaan slaap. Die plan sou wees om more van Veltie af Gysmanshoek pas oor te ry en dan by Chris ‘n draai te gaan maak. Vandaar sou ek rondkronkel en by my niggie op Sedgefield oorslaap.

So drentel my gedagtes maar.

Ek kom so passie af en daars ‘n mooi vallei voor my

(http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/7494/1002652i.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/521/1002652i.jpg/)

(http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/1483/1002653g.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/829/1002653g.jpg/)

Ek is bang vir draai en strip, so ek los hom. Ek sal maar net versgtig moet gears trap.

Maar dis ‘n problem. More ry ek tegniese dele waar ek dalk skielik hard die lever sal moet trap en breek hy dalk. Dan is my trip nou mooi in sy moer.

Daars ‘n mooi rotformasie. Ek verwonder my altyd aand die ongelooflike krag wat dit moet vat om die rotse so te buig.

(http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/1860/1002654os.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/850/1002654os.jpg/)

Skandelik dat mense so sal wees.

After dark I pitch my tent and then there's no reason to postpone any longer... its time for that hammie and nothing tastes like it when you in the veld and hungry. Those ice cold beers futher did the trick.

Its too early to crawl in the tent and hot. I take my stretcher out and lie under the sky. I'm in this amphitheatre looking up at the stars. Its magical and the milkyway like a white band. The night sounds are eerie, but soothing. I just lie there and ponder. This truelly is life and can't believe I've not done it before. The feeling of solitude is amazing and invigorating. I can do this all the time. Thoughts of days gone by and trekkers with their wagons go through my head. This was their daily life. Harsh it must have been, but what a way to live. I was born 150 years too late.

With this tranquility over me, and a long day behind, I fall asleep under the stars and wake up an hour and a half later. That was awesome, I crawl in the tent and have a sleep as few before.

The gear lever has been in the back of my mind. I don't want to risk getting stuck in the middle of nowhere and I want to do Gysmanshoek. After much pondering I decide the only solution now, to insure the ride, is to have the lever spot welded onto the shaft. Not ideal long term, but I need a solution only for the next two days. I'm not going to risk spoiling my ride.

Like doing technical, you commit and go. I've made the decision and am happy with it. Now the quandry. I doubt I'll find a welder in Caltzdorp today, so I'll have to skip Rooibergpas. I head for Ladismith, after letting Veltie and Wify know I'm good.

Its still very early and at the R62 restaurant I have a brekkie first. If they made those sarmies any smaller there would be nothing on my plate, but it fills the spot.

I remembered there was a workshop behind the garage, and when I get there, I find the owner in attendance, who had just come in for a quick emergency. My luck, I borrow his welder and half an hour later I'm on the road, assured the lever is now good.

You can see the play in the lever. I doubt I would have finished the trip.

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/6910/1002675m.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/442/1002675m.jpg/)

So ent teen die pas uit

(http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/4738/1002676c.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/819/1002676c.jpg/)

(http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/2624/1002677h.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/541/1002677h.jpg/)

(http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/3329/1002678d.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/35/1002678d.jpg/)

(http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/2447/1002679c.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/213/1002679c.jpg/)

(http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/3112/1002681v.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/856/1002681v.jpg/)

(http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/5420/1002680.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/211/1002680.jpg/)

By Riversdal hou ek verby oppad Stilbaai toe maar kry eers ‘n lekker koffie by die padstal

(http://img547.imageshack.us/img547/8207/1002682p.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/547/1002682p.jpg/)

(http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/4333/1002685l.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/850/1002685l.jpg/)

(http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/2199/1002684z.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/850/1002684z.jpg/)

Chris sê vir my dis waar Footpeg se Pa bly en hy's by die huis.

Ek is nou so half besluiteloos. Kamp in Mosselbaai ? meskien.

Noppe, my neef, verduilik my grondpad van Kleinbrak af, deur 'n plek genaamd Leeukloof, en wat my by Robertson pas sal bring. Klink goed. Ek wil vroeg wegspring.

                                                                    Day 4 – 18 December 2012

I want to carry on riding. I’m really enjoying myself… just going nowhere slowly. I cruise at 80km/h with the visor open all the time. At that speed I get to enjoy the scenery and taste the bugs.

I had purposefully booked a consultation for tomorrow to force myself to get home, otherwise I would probably still be on the road as I write this. But I’m not going to spoil the ride by thinking this is my last day.(as it turned out it wasn’t)

I’m up early as I plan a long days ride, not completely sure of my whole route yet, but I ride while there is light. Yesterday I had decided that, instead of my usual route home from Sedgefield, on the last day, I’ll rather go over Swartberg pass and see from there. Good-bye’s are said and I’m on the road. The early morning is nice and crisp.

View of Mosselbay over Tergniet.

(http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/167/1002690y.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/1002690y.jpg/)

From Kleinbrak I head into the hills and am soon on gravel towards Leeukloof. It’s a pleasant scenic ride.

(http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/4140/1002692ow.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/705/1002692ow.jpg/)

Heading down into the kloof

(http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/3627/1002693.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/580/1002693.jpg/)

In the forest its like riding Kom se Pad. Beautiful.

Over the years most of our rides always included parts of the Karoo's. I love the wide open space and starkness. As I come off the pass, and over the hill towards the Volmoed turnoff, it opens up in front of me... Codak moment

Its time for a brekkie and I don't feel like the usual Wimpy fare. There's that place just before the Caves and I've always wanted to stop there.

Brekfis is good while these okes koekeloer me. Pure function and form, the way your bike should be.

I head up the pass. It’s a beautiful clear day. I have plenty of foto’s of these views, as I’m sure you have, but its never enough

(http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/9046/1002704c.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/820/1002704c.jpg/)

At the top its windy, but I stop for a break. It was hard work getting the XT up there, floating all over the place. Stunning… the view as well

(http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/6286/1002706iv.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/694/1002706iv.jpg/)

Anyone we know

(http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/8024/1002709o.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/401/1002709o.jpg/)

Then I put together this panorama photo which I consider to be my ‘Pic of the Year’

(http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/7915/1002708k.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/707/1002708k.jpg/)

Down the other side I always marvel at the construction of these switch-backs

(http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/2751/1002710n.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/528/1002710n.jpg/)

At the end of the pass I stop at the driffie and log it at the back of my mind as a good camp spot. I’m seriously getting into this stealth camping thing and look out all the time

(http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/8026/1002711u.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/163/1002711u.jpg/)

Beautiful rock formation and then you get arseholes, that simply can’t control themselves, and have to deface it

By Klaarstroom hou ek grondpad Willowmore toe.

(http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/9707/1002715h.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/51/1002715h.jpg/)

(http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/2968/1002714j.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/338/1002714j.jpg/)

Roads in the distance

(http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/4283/1002716u.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/405/1002716u.jpg/)

Vondeling stasie

(http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/8066/1002718k.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/525/1002718k.jpg/)

Ek talm rond.

Kaksoek. Besluiteloos.

(http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/3973/1002719n.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/824/1002719n.jpg/)

Dis ‘n hele ent se ry en ek cruise so 100km/h.

So moet ‘n toasted sarmie ete mos lyk.

Eers ry ek Mt Steward oor Jansenville toe. Dis ‘n mooi stukkie pad en ek wil julle wys hoe lyk dit daar.

Die kerkie

(http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1788/1002723gb.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/152/1002723gb.jpg/)

Die stasie

(http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/2664/1002725v.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/822/1002725v.jpg/)

(http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/6128/1002724c.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/341/1002724c.jpg/)

Een van die huisies

(http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/4647/1002726v.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/338/1002726v.jpg/)

(http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/5118/1002733h.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/809/1002733h.jpg/)

(http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/3439/1002734d.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/534/1002734d.jpg/)

:3some:

The nice thing about doing a Ride Report is you get to do the trip again, and lots can share the enjoyment with you. As you now know this was a bit of an unique trip and many things came together to make it a success. It was one of the best experiences I've ever had...

Meeting Jim, letting him use my bike, the anticipation that he'd enjoy the ride and get to CT safely, visting with friends and appreciating the effort some made to come and say hello, the highlight, if there can be a single one... my first stealth camp, the pleasure of a solo ride, and so the list can go on.

To one and all who shared it on the road and along he way with us... I say thanks. See you again. Ride safe and enjoy your year end.

As I was reading I so wanted you to leave the corporate commitment and do the Baviaans. I know, many years from now in our memories, a minute on our own time will always trump several weeks on someone else's.

But, I so related to your following your instinct in not going. I too have been told by my trusty steed to change plans mid morning by the vaguest of things such as a feeling on one specific gravel turn that spoke to my inner guide.

Bravo!

You have more than doubled your goodwill karma with your generosity and lovely ride report.

May we someday meet and I can buy you a well deserved beer... or several.

Although I'm often impulsive as to where I ride, I'm also disciplined in living to ride another day. That instinct is very strong.

Ek is versot oor jou skryf styl.

Eendag wil ek net so agter jou stof saamry!

Hou so aan doen :thumleft:

Lekker om weer van jou te hoor. Daai trip sal nog eendag gebeur... net voor jy jou AT aan my verkoop

Jup, dit is amper net so lekker om jou Ride Report te lees as om dit te ry, want baie van die positiewe emosies wat met so 'n trippie gepaard gaan, word deur jou rustige skryfstyl in jou RR's vasgevang.

Ek sit hier in my kantoor en lees en vergeet skoon dat ek by die werk is.

Goed gedoen Jup, nog een van jou meesterstukke.

Was a pleasure glad you enjoyed riding with us. It's all a distant memory what with snow and cold weather now. But just a wee troll through away!

klink my jou volgende zen trip is met die Djebel...

"ZEN and the Little Bike Trip"  :thumleft:

Jy gaan mos vir my en Gert join in April ?

Maandag terug huistoe... of jy ry saam soveel jy wil.
Begin 'n planning thread met datums seblief of verduidelik bietjie toe.
