Title: Norway to South Africa. 37 000km. Solo.
Post by: Robski on January 19, 2013, 01:10:24 pm
Been putting this off for too long. So over the next few weeks I will share some of my stories about my travels from Norway to Cape Town. I am starting from the very beginning. Hope you enjoy.

When I was young, about 6, my older brother's friend had a motorbike, which I think it was a Suzuki 50 scrambler.
I can remember riding on it with my brother in the front of him, holding the middle of the handlebars with the largest smile on my face.
Then a year or two after that when I was allowed to stay up late in school holidays, and watch TV with my father, he used to watch the Paris - Dakar. I think from the time I saw those big bikes doing breakneck speeds in the deserts of Northern Africa, I fell in love with motorcycles.
My father promised that if he ever bought a farm, that I would be allowed to get a motorbike. When I was 12 he bought a 2000h piece of land in the Koue bokkeveld. So I gathered all my money I had saved from unpacking boxes at a sports shop, the money I saved selling stolen avocados from the neighbours house, the money I saved selling chestnuts I had picked from the trees up the road to an Italian deli and found myself a KX60. If you had seen how happy it made me you would of thought my parents had me on some seriously strong happy drugs.
I got into MX shortly after when my father was buying me protective gear from Mike Hopkins and a guy asked him if he wanted to take me to the track to give it a go. I got into it for 4 years, and did pretty well.
My father died when I was 15, and after that I rode for another year until girls and beer's sounded like a better option. At the time it did.
I have always had a love for Africa. I remember most holidays, the 4 kids, of which I am the youngest being carted in the Kombi up to the Kruger, the Karoo National Park, Umfolozi etc. I always found a great fascination in animals and the 'bush'. And my relationship with the bush has gotten stronger and stronger over the years.

After school I travelled around Europe for a year and a half with a skate board strapped to my backpack, meeting people, sleeping in parks, partying, getting up to no good and working jobs a week at a time to save enough money to get me through the next few weeks. I came home and studied business for 3 years after my travels, but towards the end of it, never felt I was ready to start my career.
It took me very little time to remember what I wanted to do. What I have always wanted to do. To ride a motorbike through Africa!
So in July/August 2009 varsity holidays, in a spur of the moment decision I bought a Africa Twin and two days later was doing a one month long trip through Botswana, Zambia and Namibia to see if this long distance stuff was for me. Turns out it is.

2010.
Over the next 6 months I researched everything besides my route in detail. I got everything I needed to keep myself self sufficient for long periods of time. Decided my direction of continental travel. Planned a rough route through which countries I wanted to go to. Decided to take a map book and compass rather than a GPS. Thought of maybe doing the ride with someone else, but felt I wanted to do it alone rather. Tried to get sponsors. Tried to raise money for the IAPF anti-poaching, but found this to be to tiring and something I couldn't find the energy to do after being turned down by so many companies. Booked my flight to Olso, Norway. Bought a 2nd hand KTM 990Adv.R 2010 model with 5000km on the clock, after trying many other large bikes and finding this to be the most agile and powerful, and most importantly, the one that suited my riding style the most. Put all the extras onto the bike. Took them off. Did a 2 day apprenticeship at KTM CT. My brother offered me his 1969 Porsche 911T if I promised not to do this trip. Turned the offer down. Found I had left it to late to ship my bike. Found a company which handled the logistics to fly the bike to Olso. Had a farewell party. Left Cape Town International for what was to become the biggest thing to happen to me in my 24 year life.

The list of countries I ended up going through.

1. Norway
2. Sweden
3. Denmark
4. Germany
5. Austria
6. Lichtenstein
7. Switzerland
8. Italy
9. France
10. Spain
11. Portugal
      back to Spain.

12. Morocco
13. Western Sahara
14. Mauritania
15. Senegal
16. Gambia
through the Southern region of Senegal
17. Guinea-Bissau
18. Guinea
19. Cote d'Ivoire
20. Ghana
21. Togo
22. Benin
23. Nigeria
24. Cameroon
25. Central African Republic
26. Democratic Republic of Congo
27. Uganda
28. Kenya
29. Tanzania
30. Malawi
31. Mozambique
32. Swaziland
33. South Africa
34. Lesotho
      back into South Africa

So lets go through the list. I think I am not going to go through Europe in much detail, because frankly, on a Dual Sport bike, it's a bit bland compared to Africa. Btw, I think I am leaving a country off that list, but I cannot bloody remember. hmm.

I arrived in Oslo 4 days before my bike did, with my small waterproof backpack, one of the side panniers and a side pannier. I stayed in the same hostel I stayed at while backpacking around Europe a few years back. The day came to go and reconcile with bike. I had to take a train then a bus to the airport. I walked around for over an hour trying to find the warehouse and company which was holding my bike, then found the place but was told to go back to the airport as I didn't have customs clearance. I had to bullshit the customs officer by flipping through all my papers quickly and speaking in a South African accent at a faster than normal pace after I had noticed that I didn't have all the necessary paperwork they required. I got away with a couple lightly pressed stamps on the clearance forms and left the vaguely informed customs officer. I got back to the warehouse just before they closed for the day, and shared a beer with the Swedish fork lift driver who felt it was more important speaking to me about my optimistic travel plans than leaving work after his twelve hour shift. The excitement and anxiety was getting to me, and I must admit that it was difficult holding the spanners without shaking while I put the partially disassembled bike back together.

(http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/2186/dsc0032ex.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/515/dsc0032ex.jpg/)

(http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/5267/dsc0033ik.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/834/dsc0033ik.jpg/)

(http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/2001/dsc0035di.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/546/dsc0035di.jpg/)

(http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/6682/dsc0038dj.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/dsc0038dj.jpg/)

I left the airport area with a hoot to my new friend, and the smile that I would become so fond with during the next few months grew on my face. I travelled for a couple of hours, doing a few wheelies out excitement to a hilltop campsite next to an old castle overlooking the town below. That night I saw a hedgehog for first time in my life, and felt it was a sign of many wildlife viewings to come. I was partially wrong, but I didn't know this yet.

In the next few days of Norway I stayed in a couple farmers fields, and found a couple of scenic dirt roads between them. Scandinavia for those who don't know, manages to eat away at your budget at a worrying pace. I was in Contact with a friend of mine, Dale who was studying Naval Architecture in Sweden, and we had planned that I would meet him. So off to Sweden I headed.

After a relatively short ride, I arrived in Goteborg, a university town in the South West of Sweden. I eventually made contact with my mate Dale, who moved into his girlfriends apartment for a few nights to allow me to stay in his bachelors apartment. We had a great time. He showed me around the area, ate some strange food, drank expensive beer, flirted with pretty blond girls, went out till the early hours of the morning, visited a few islands, found out I wasn't a fan of pickled Herring, ate beetroot and meatball burgers & made a few new friends. Dale accompanied me down Sweden, and we stayed a night at a derelict quarry which was now a lake and then a couple nights on a some farmers land. In Scandinavia it is legal to camp where you want, but it's polite to just ask the farmer first if he wouldn't mind, and I always got a warm welcome. There were a few dirt roads, but nothing to really write about. As you could see, I didn't own a topbox yet, as I planned to get it in Germany, and I didn't need any jerry cans yet for fuel. So I was travelling light at the moment.

A typical little waterside Swedish town

After that I said cheers to Dale, and went on my way down to Copenhagen to meet a friend Julie who I had met on my gap year after school. I can remember the hard & freezing rains I endured on my way down, even though it was early July!

I got the ferry over from Sweden to Denmark, and arrived at my friend Julie's apartment in Copenhagen that afternoon. She planned a party that night for me, which was fun. The next day we then went up to her parents lake house, and spent a few days there. Her parents were very accommodating, and I got on with her father very well, who allowed me to mow his lawn with his ride on mower, with beer in hand, and the local radio station playing through the radio headphones. While walking the dog with Julie, we came across cannibalistic slugs, which grew to about 12cm.The would be in groups of about 5 - 20 devouring each other. We also saw a fox run across the street. I have a soft spot for Scandinavia. It is very clinical, clean and expensive, but the country sides are amazing and everything feels very safe. Even in the forrest's, the moss grows over the rocks so in case you do fall, you are welcomed by a cushion on spongey green stuff!

I left Denmark with a lunch box of padkos which Julie and her mother had made for me. Each sandwich with little inspirational notes written on the wax paper. It felt good to be so far away from home, and be welcomed so lovingly by them. Off to Germany I headed.

I headed swiftly through Germany to Munich, where I was going to buy a topbox for my bike. I camped at the oldest hostel/campsite in Munich, which is about 75years old. It was only operational in summer, and it was conveniently positioned close to the area where the Oktoberfest is erected each year and attracts millions of people each year. I went to it when I was 16, and that was enough to keep my desire to want to go back there for a while. I stayed in Munich for 4 days in the pouring rain, as I really didn't feel like having to pack up my tent and have to put everything wet into my panniers. This was a feeling that would change in time to come. Hey, right now I was still showering once a day! Germany has a strong interest in bikes, and travelling on bikes. So I only really got noticed when people stopped to take a closer look and see the word Africa, and that usually got their interest and they would the ask 21 questions.
I left Munich with a top box and headed to meet up with my best mate Matt in Berlin, who was doing his summer travelling and was currently staying in an apartment with two lady friends of his. They welcomed me too, very warmly. Matt and I had a few good parties in the city that is constantly abuzz. I spent 4/5 days in Berlin before feeling it was time to move on.

I don't know why, but I cannot seem to find any photo's of Germany.

Austria was the next country in line, and riding along the winding roads through the Alps was amazing. Seeing those snow capped mountains even though it was mid summer, was special.

A tractor parked in a little town where they were having a tractor fair?

I stayed the night at a campsite on the hillside, and in the morning went for a walk up the mountain. the views at the top were amazing. The cows grazed on the hillsides, at steep angles. I don't know how they keep their balance and wondered how many had tumbled down.

I rode to Liechtenstein, a tiny country of only 160kmsq sandwiched by Switzerland and Austria! From the picture of my bike parked on the hill, I could see the whole of the country, in one valley. It was raining so only stayed for two nights.

I spoke to my friend Jo, who's family owned a villa in Tuscany. She told me it was hot and sunny, and compared to the summer I was dealing with further north, I happily took up the invitation to go spend a few days down there. I rode from Liechtenstein, through Switzerland, into Italy and strait down to Tuscany! Sun, here I come!

Riding through the South, to a region of Switzerland I had not previously travelled, I stopped off at a petrol station. As many of you probably know, in Europe you are the fuel attendant, you pump the fuel and go into the store to pay for your petrol, which I rather like. Anyway, I walked into the store and the person behind the counter was not speaking German, not French but Italian. Guess there is a small part of Switzerland which still speak Italian, make brilliant panini's and serve coffee in the Italian manner.

Coming down from the Alps, passing lake Como, heading past Milano I really started to feel the Mediterranean summer for the fist time since I had arrived up north in Norway. And felt what it was going to feel like for the next few months riding in my full kit.

I arrived at the villa on the hills over looking the walled town of Lucca. A beautiful part of Tuscany. Dry, the sound of Crickets, citrus trees, vineyards, winding mountainous roads, the faint smell of lavender in the air. Joanna was just arriving back the shops, and welcomed me warmly into her family home, introduced me to her extended family and showed me to my room. My mother is Italian, and I grew up on pasta 3/4 times a week, was always allowed a sip of two of the red wine that was on the dinner table and always loved the Parma ham and Salami we got on occasions, so there are no points for guessing that I was in heaven! I stayed there for about 5 days lounging by the pool, playing tennis, going for rides around the area, visiting ice-cream shops regularly, joining in on the dinner parties in the grand eating hall, and eating lots of Parma ham at every opportunity! I knew this life of luxury I was living for these few days was going to come to an end soon enough, so I lapped it all up.

I rode up from Lucca along the coast passing through over 150 tunnels to Nice in France, about 40kms west of Monaco. The ride was brilliant, and was able to open up the throttle nicely along the roads. Winding it up to 210 in parts, and then testing out the Mitas along the tighter winding roads.

I lived in Nice for just over a year in 2005/2006, so I had quite a few friends still there. I was only mean't to stay there for 5 days, while I was waiting for my Drift HD cam to arrive (New on the market at the time) from Action Camera France. But it took 3 weeks to be delivered as they hadn't received stock yet, so I had some party time. I even had time to start a holiday romance with a pretty Swedish girl.. and an Austrian girl  ;)
I got back into the 'South of France' lifestyle quickly and really enjoyed it.I did a few day trips from here, into to Italy, into the mountains, along the coast, up to really old villages precariously perched on steep hills. My friend Matt met up with me again here, and joined in on the festivites.

Leaving Nice was difficult, as I had been there for a while and made new friends this time. But I needed to keep moving and get to Africa!

My brother was flying in from Cape Town with a friend of ours, Sean, to meet me in the South of Portugal for one last party before I went into Africa where he thought I wouldn't make it out alive. My friend Matt was also going to meet me there for one last time.
I left Nice mid morning, and rode the 650km to Barcelona for the night where I stayed at my usual backpackers I have stayed at the previous times I had been there. Riding through inland Spain the following day the temperature got up to 48degrees, and I was boiling in my riding gear. My SHIFT riding jacket has space for a 3L reservoir, which really came in handy that day. I spoilt my self that night and stayed at a little hotel in a small town near Seville which I got at a good rate and served cheap food and hearty portions! The next morning I set off for Faro in Portugal where I left my bike at the KTM dealer for a service. I caught a bus up to Lisbon to meet up with my brother and Sean, and found them at the hotel they were staying at. I walked in and saw my brother, and snuck up behind him to surprise his and, he got such a surprise he punched me in my nose and made it bleed for about 20minutes. Haha, it was a typical. We went out that night for a dinner and a few drinks. in the morning, nursing our first hangover that week, we headed for the South, to the party town of Lagos, where we met Matt and booked into a hotel there. It's a small town, that in Summer becomes a manic town filled with bars and restaurants, tourists from all around the world, lined with breathtaking beaches and cliffs, with warm turquoise water and loads to do. I don't think I need to tell you how good of a party we had that week.

(http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/4368/dsc0001uih.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/502/dsc0001uih.jpg/)

(http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/7303/dsc0013bq.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/341/dsc0013bq.jpg/)

(http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/6456/dsc0040xie.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/706/dsc0040xie.jpg/)

It was a bit sad saying bye, as I knew that from here out I wouldn't meet any familiar faces, but would meet new ones that made me excited. I headed down to Tarifa Spain, which would be my last bit of Europe. I got to the port after stoping off at a supermarket and buying some non-perishables that would become my staples through Africa. Namely pasta and rice and to that I would add a quarter block of stock for flavour. Light, easy, doesn't go off easily, just needs water and his high in carbohydrates which I would need to keep my weight up. Boarded the first ferry going to Tangier. A short 40min trip. Into Africa I go..
