Title: 1200 ADV
Post by: Adventurer on May 04, 2006, 08:44:51 pm
I saw the new 1200GS in the 'flesh' tonight at AMID, think I will stay with my 1150 ADV.

Not quite Michnus, yes the 1200 is quicker and lighter, and I do need my 30 odd years of riding experience to stay ahead, but I still prefer the old ADV, I will test ride the 1200 ADV, but most of the reasons I chose the 1150 over the 1200 are still current with the 12 ADV. Last weekend Carol dropped her 1200 in a river, R2000-00 later it was back on the road, not for me thank you. When my 1150 is worn out I will probably HAVE to consider the 12 ADV, but that is a long way off. Maybe KTM has got there kak sorted out by then, then I can buy a Katoom instead! :D  :D  :D

It seems the 1200ADV is not one of the bikes on the "test ride" list

These are the options as per BMW special AMID edition newsletter.

F 650 GS
F 650 GS Dakar
R 1200 GS
K 1200 S
K 1200 R
R 1200 ST
R 1200 RT

i havent seen the 12 adv but having seen and ridden the regular 12

the KTM is lighter, cheaper, and produces almost as much power as a motor nearly 250cc bigger.
but seriously what kak?

i personally still like the looks of the 1150avd over the 1200adv, but only by a margin of about 9 out of 10 vs 8/10 respectively.

i dont think bmw wants 1150 owners to convert, as much as they would like to atract new buyers...as in.. why buy old when we can sell you new and slightly improved/updated?
they probably havent changed the bike in order to improve upon it, but most likely only brought out the new 1200adv to keep their line-up in check with the 1200 shape.

Why does damaging a bike in the river make it inferior to your bike? Are you claiming the 1150 is waterproof?

You don't HAVE to buy a 1200...buy a secondhand 1150. There is no reason why you should move forward in life.

You have managed to insult both 1200 and KTM owners in one post. I did'nt think it was possible!

Adventurer, with respect

The only people who dislike the 1200 GS-series are 1150 owners.
I have never owned an 1150 but I have been made to feel by people like you that any progress beyond the 1150 is evil. That is such a load of bullshit!
And it seems everyone else on the planet (exaggeration) disagrees with your sentiments anyway.
Your 'no thanks, I'll rather keep my 1150' sentiment is fine...you love your bike, good. I prefer something a little better.

Your overweight pig sucks!

this is definately a very complex issue 1150 vs 1200
i do believe it would be much better discussed around a fire with a few cold ones
possibly my point of view is affected by my emotional attachment to my bike and as such rationality sometimes goes out the window but once again its personal taste and nothing to get het up about

read this ride report, it is good enough for me to know that the 1200gs is hellova improvement on the 1150, leave the 1150Adv out because of the suspension.

Seems I have pissed y'all off, :D  :D  don't get so het up :D  :D
IMO the only 'kak' pertaining to the Katoom is the sales attitude, aftersales attitude and parts back up, the Katoom is an awesome scoot and I wish I had one parked in my garage, next to the 1150 ADV... :D  :D
As far as the new 1200 GS range is concerned, also a lekker scoot, but for me it is a problem that I cannot fix it when/if it breaks down outside SA, this may well never happen, but what IF?
The water thing is a problem because of the stupid way they breath the engine casing  pressure, straight up into the airbox, so when water comes the other way it goes straight down into the motor. The 1150 has a water/oil drain plug at the back of the airbox so water ingestion is not a problem. Luckily Carol's scoot sufferred water ingestion close to home, had this happenned far away it would have been a problem. I have been looking for some technical wally from BMW at AMID to take up this problem with, no luck yet. Maybe tomorrow.
The 1200's survived the GS challenge without serious break downs, and the winner rode one, but I still prefer the 1150 ADV. By the way, I think the standard 1150 GS sucks as well, that gearbox is seriously wrong..

I hope so - especially since there seems to be a little space left for me as well

A tight fit...
