Title: Grand Central Terminus in New York is 100 years old
Post by: Rynet on February 06, 2013, 06:32:23 am
I loved the Old School Elegance of Grand Central Terminus when I lived in New York. I found some beautiful historical photographs  , but I thought I would post them here too as they are so beautiful.

"A century ago, rail travel was at its peak in the U.S., and New York City built the massive Grand Central Terminal to accommodate the growth. Built over 10 years, gradually replacing its predecessor named Grand Central Station, the Grand Central Terminal building officially opened on February 2, 1913. The terminal and the surrounding neighborhood thrived -- by 1947, 65 million people a year were traveling through the building. However, in the latter half of the 20th century, rail travel declined sharply, and Grand Central Terminal fell into disrepair, threatened several times with demolition. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority was able to undertake a huge restoration in the 1990s, and Grand Central remains a New York City icon today, 100 years after it first opened"

I put the captions underneath them, when I saved the photos.

The clock above the Grand Central Terminal Information Booth, with faces made of opal, ticks on the day before the famed Manhattan transit hub turns 100 years old on January 31, 2013 in New York City. The terminal opened in 1913 and is the world's largest terminal covering 49 acres with 33 miles of track. Each day 700,000 people pass through the terminal where Metro-North Railroad operates 700 trains per day. (Mario Tama/Getty Images)

Great post.

I was there in July. Spectacular building, and very spooky to see those 100yr old photos of the new building empty.

Little known fact is the zodiacs imprinted on the ceiling are actually a mirror image of the stars we see. Apparently the artist was provided with a map of the sky as we see it, and then turned it upside down when using it as a reference for the ceiling, thereby turning it all the wrong way round.

When they realised the mistake, they stated that the ceiling "reflects God's view of the stars".

Wow,fantastic pics Rynet!

interesting to see the demographics of the crowds. If you look at the old pics, its almost all men,as opposed to more women in the recent pics.

That was really another era.

Lovely place.

I am sad rail travel in this country does not amount to much anymore - I love stations and I was privileged to walk around Grand Central in NY a number of times.

Pragtig. Wonder of dit waar is soos in party films dat daar nog "levels" laer is ondergrond wat net toegemaak is en nog bestaan.

Amazing Mr. Big ,  :thumleft: It looks like ants running around , typical of New Yorkers hey? .  When I arrived in NY it was snowing and it was freezing cold and we walked everywhere . Later on , in August it was so sweltering hot you melted and struggled to cope . It is a city of extremes , always open , always buzzing. Buildings as far along as you can see and high enough to give you claustrophobia . I loved it and I hated it , but I will never forget it . I lasted 7 months and then I had to leave . It was too powerful a drug for my system.

Beautiful pics thanks!  That is really some amazing architecture!  So sad our local rail system is so far behind.

Thanks ST, didn't you also live there ? . I like all the photos for different reasons , but love the the one below for the study of people , you can see the women really fussing over their men after the war, and how the women still dressed up , hats and everything . Lovely . :thumleft:

Bitter bitter mooi.  Dankie vir die "trip down memory lane".  :thumleft:

Nice.
Last time I was there I was a fresh faced 19-year old. It was my very first time abroad and I had to get myself from this ant hive to Los Angeles - very exciting!
