Whats the cost for entry and since you are doing it again a rough cost estimation all in (bike excluded, unless there is an option to rent)?

Someone should teach that chick how to pick up a bike before sending her off into the desert.

I will be there this year, front and centre on the spectators bench.

It would be great to Spectate at the Super special and then on Day 4 and 5! Good sections to see the Riders.

Are you living in the UAE?

I was really looking forward to doing this, but I'm only going to start walking mid March sometime. Won't be fit enough (man enough ) for this year I'm afraid. Pretty bummed about it.

Kenisis you are in again right?

Haven't been on my offroad for almost a year now, a couple of small outings, way to out of shape to even consider this one. I will be part of the peanut gallery. Still trying to recover from a broken ankle. The bones don't break anymore they shatter.

Its with a degree of sadness that i am pulling out of this years challenge.

My shoulde has not healed up as i would have wished. I would probably be able to finish the challenge but the risk of re breaking my shoulder at this stage is very high. X-Rays show that there is still a large portion of my clavicle that has not knitted.

So until next year then.

Sorry Guys!

Cheers fellas

Neil I am doing it on your least favorite of machines, a TRX700 Honda (quad)
Quad is built and prepped here in Dubai by Sebastian Husseini of Sebsports.com.

Its a stock motor, but with a rebuild top end. We changed the stock suspension with Elka stage 5 suspension and it made such a big difference, worth every penny spend on it. Other than that just the normal stuff that need to go on any rally bike or quad.

I have gone the Kenesis route of buying a cheap compass that points North! In any case if I do get lost where am I going to walk to? Even knowing where North is I would not know where to go to.

Documentation is this Thursday and Friday is scrutineering. Saturday is the prologue  and Sunday the rally proper start.

Live tracking: http://vulcain.iritrack.net/tdcom/eviewer/abu13/
Checkpoints: http://vulcain.iritrack.net/tdcom/posi/abu13/web/index.php/display/index

Interesting points:
Marc Coma is back after injury - “We have tested in the desert of Tunisia but it has been a long break because of my injury and this is the right opportunity to see how fit I am, how quickly I can find my rhythm and get a good feeling for the bike. It will be difficult to win after such a long break but as always I will do my best.”

Sam Sutherland is riding. He wrote on Twitter "Ready to go :)" entered, but I havn't found out of he is actually riding after his injury woes.

The Speedbrain team are now going it on their own as a manufacturer.
Speedbrain Team principal Wolfgang Fischer: "We´ve worked hard since returning from the Dakar and we are very well positioned for the 2013 season. We have a brilliant bike, top-notch riders with Joan and Paulo and a proven team setup."

"Additionally, we will have U.S. rider Quinn Cody further strenghtening our programme in Qatar. Many of the world´s best riders are competing at the first two rounds and we intend to be front-runners"

This could be very interesting...... and that Husky remains very sexy  :3some:
Title: Taddy Blazusiak – Racing Rally
Post by: SteveD on April 05, 2013, 08:02:07 pm
The opening round of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies takes place in Abu Dhabi from April 6-11. Among the best rally competitors in the world, USWE ambassador Taddy Blazusiak will contest the race. Keen to sample a taste of true rally racing, the endurocross specialist will be a competitor to watch out for at round one. We caught up with Blazusiak to find out more about what brought him to Abu Dhabi…

Why have you decided to race the first round of the FIM Cross Country Rallies in Abu Dhabi?
Taddy
: “When I looked at my calendar of events I realised that I had a small window of opportunity to give this a try. I spoke to a few people about my idea and things quickly took shape. One of my sponsors, Orlen, actually runs a team in the series, so together with them, KTM, USWE and the rest of the guys that support me I was able to make it happen.”

Your first taste of rally was at the Desafio Litoral in Argentina during July 2012. But racing here in Abu Dhabi will be your first true taste of rally. Are you excited about that?
Taddy
: “Yeah, I can’t wait to get out there. I really enjoyed the Desafio Litoral, but there were no sand dunes to contend with. Here in Abu Dhabi there are only sand dunes and some of them are huge. This is what rally racing is all about and why I wanted to make this race.”

Have you ever raced in sand like this before?
Taddy
: “No  :o, not even on my enduro bike! On Wednesday, of this week, we did some testing and I began to get a feel for things. We only rode for about 50km so it’s hard to learn anything in that short amount of time but I felt comfortable and I’m confident in what I can do on the bike.”

What goals and expectations have you set yourself for the event?
Taddy
: “I’m just here to have fun and enjoy the experience. This is not my sport so I won’t be risking anything to win. My main goal is to learn as much as possible and get a feel for things. In Argentina my main issue was navigation. Reading the road book at high speed is still alien to me. If, by the end of the week I can get comfortable reading the road book while racing in sand then I’ll have achieved a lot.”

Given your interest in rally, are thoughts of a possible start in the Dakar Rally in the back of your mind?
Taddy:
“As soon as I sat on a rally bike people immediately asked me ‘oh, what about Dakar’. Of course it’s something that interests me. It’s a race that every guy that ever raced an enduro bike wants to do. But for now those thoughts are buried in the back of my mind. Endurocross is my only focus - it takes up all of my time. It’s not possible to jump from my endurocross bike to a rally bike and be competitive on both.”

With X-Games Brazil just around the corner many people might question why you’re here racing rally. How has your preparation been for X-Games?
Taddy
: “I’m ready. I’ve been working my butt off to be ready for Brazil and I can’t wait to get there. Racing the SuperEnduro World Championship was a big part of that preparation and since the final round of that series in France I’ve put a lot of laps in on my test tracks. I’m really excited about going to Brazil. X-Games series is going to be huge and I’m in it to win it.”

I think that Taddy Blazusiak... mentioned by SteveD was also the oke who rocked up at Ertzberg as a spectator in 2007..... then got given a bike and some kit by a KTM rep that knew him from AMA and MX...
... and ended up winning the whole thing and about 4 times since ... not 100% sure.

Nick Is a Saffer that Lives Here in Dubai With us. Very compitent on the Quad!

If i have the Right Person Jacobus is renting a bike from KTM and it sounds like the KTM guys dropped his bike on one side of the pits and left it there for him to get through Scrutineering on his own. He chatted to Sean yesterday and wasnt  impressed.

What shitty weather. I went out on the route for today. Visibility down to a couple of meteres in some areas. Nice and cool and perfect for riding if only they could see the track. The sandstorm is terrible. I have sand in everywhere, and that just from standing outside for a couple of minutes.

After an hour delayed start, the riders where routed to the refuel point for the second section of the stage. based on the current weather it looks as if this will be cancelled as well.

If the chopper can't fly they cannot race.

These storms usually last for 2 or 3 days, hopefully it will be over by the end of the day.

I would really hate to be on a bike in this weather, not to mention trying to race.

Second section of day one also cancelled. Must be very frustrating for international teams that come all this way and then not able to race.

Would they make the stages longer for the rest of the days to make up the shortfall? Can they do that?

Looks like the cars are on the racing stage, one of the guys clocking 170km/h on one section, freaky stuff.

Bikes are almost at the bivouac. Nice easy day for them.

Roma in the lead on the road, should also be on time.

I just found out that Skaaidawg had a terrible crash today. Details are sketchy, Sounds like 3 broken ribs and stiches where he hit the road book!

Sam was Flying today. Sounds like he may be getting a penalty for speeding in a controlled zone!

Interesting results today.
Overnight leader Sam Sutherland back in fourth, Coma down from second to third, but less than four minutes covering the top five riders.
SkaaiDawg is either having a really, really long day, or he is out. He doesn't show up on the tracking site and more, so it looks like the latter.  :BangHead:

Speedbrain inside the top three and moving up

The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge 2013 remains an extreme challenge for men and machine. Following Monday´s brutal stage through the Liwa desert another very tough test awaited the riders today at this opening round of the FIM Cross Country Rally World Championship. Tuesday in the Qasr al Sarab region saw temperatures rise above 40 degrees celcius, providing more soft sand and tricky navigation as well.

Paulo Goncalves aboard his Speedbrain 450 Rally bike delivered another brilliant ride as he followed his strategy. The Portuguese had aimed to gain time on the two riders in front of him in the standings, Sam Sunderland and Marc Coma. Goncalves bravely fulfilled his mission thanks to an error-free ride, as he improved in the provisional ranks from third to second place.

Paulo Goncalves: "Today it was important to stay in touch with my main competition and make up time on Coma and Sunderland. Things went fine despite the difficult circumstances. I was able to surf the dunes perfectly and could rely on my bike. It works flawlessly and I had a lot of fun out there. There are two more days left and we have to stay concentrated. There´s not much time separating us at the front. The conditions here are very difficult for the amateurs. They have a hard time with the sand getting hotter and softer as the day goes on. The guys have to fight very hard in the blazing sunshine at noon."

Team principal Wolfgang Fischer: "It was important to ride smart and tactical today. Paulo was doing a perfect job and able to move up a spot in the classification. Congratulations to the whole team, well done."

First 16 riders are already finished today.
Looks like the top five rode close together so they ended up trading places, with the overall staying similar.
Sam Sutherland first today, and remains first overall.
Mr Blazusiak is having an impressive debut in dunes. Maybe one day I will be able to ride like that  :imaposer: Or not!

Taken the day off tomorrow, will be chasing the rally on the last stage. Early (06h00) out to Liwa from Abu Dhabi tomorrow morning. Should be about 6 hours for "racing" to get to the viewpoints in time to see some real action.

I spoke to Eugene this morning...

He was just leaving the re-fueling area and was doing about 30 - 40 Km/h when he crashed.

He was adjusting his roadbook and resetting his Icom when he hit the lip of a dune.  He says he was riding with one hand and was not looking and "suddenly the world just went missing" :ricky:

He went partially over the bars but the roadbook hooked him under the chin and cut him open on the helmet strap.

He went to the medics and when they were washing out the blood from his mouth the found that he was "leaking" from another hole just under his lip.

He got 23 stitches and was also diagnosed with 2 cracked ribs.

The quad is OK and he reckons he will go again tomorrow as he wants to complete the race and receive his award for doing so !!

Hats of to him for having a bit of "Vasbyt"...................  and remembering that   "Ou Manne can take the punch" !!!!

Marc Coma has moved up into the overall lead.
Impressive stuff.

Today's results and the overall results are posted below.

Even more impressive, however, is the vasbyt of the oke with the cracked ribs and the multiple stitches, who started the day with massive penalties, had a long, long day but carried on regardless. Big brass ones, to ride all day having just checked out of hospital.

The competition for last place is now fierce, nogal between two South Africans. I'm not sure what Mr Potgieter did to get that kind of time penalty......

OK boys, spend the day on Thursday chasing the Dessert Challenge. Was great fun in the Tundra with a couple of short cuts through the desert trying to beat the front runners to the fuel stop and the finish. Made the fuel stop in time, but they did beat us to the finish.
What was nice is that the guys were all super relaxed and had no issue chatting to the spectators and just overall being super guys.
Met Taddy some years ago at a race and once again had a chat with him, he was in really nice spirit and thoroughly enjoyed the ride. I am sure we will see him in the desert again soon.

Was very pissed that the weather was so bad to start with, next year I will follow the entire thing from start to finish. Work is overrated anyway.

What would a 450 Rally replica sell for? I have an Electric on order to stuff around with but will have to wait for the factory release, could be anything from 6 to 12 months.

Ja look, if your want to race professional get one of those, otherwise any other bike will do just fine. I was lucky and got a 2nd hand one. A new motor is still going to cost $10K  Reckon they are fairly bullet proof so we will see.

Here are some pictures before we left for scrutineering

and some fart-assing around before the prologue

Documentation went by quickly and without any problems, scrutineering started off with Team SebSports arriving with 6 quads and 1 bike.  When the TDCom guys checked the Iritrack and GPS it was found that my sentinel was not working and here is when the French and I got lost in translation. I was told to change the GPS and on returning with a new GPS was told they actually meant the sentinel! So off I go again to change the changed GPS and get a new sentinel. That fixed it was time for the dB test of the exhaust and remembering what happened to Kenesis last year, we insisted to warm up our engines before the crap was wringed out of it. It passed and moved along to be checked out for all the other stuff like condition of helmet, boots, chess protection and if you have a strobe light, compass etc, Peculiar is that they did not really show interest in any of our neck braces. All passed and we are cleared to race!

Lined up for prologue – highest number first to go, so the quads opened the course followed by the bikes and cars. When it was my time to be presented to the millions of people watching, nah just kidding, I rode up the ramp and was introduced by the Arab lady announcer as “Rider 144, Eugene Moolman from……………….Russia!!!!! According to her RSA stand for Russia, ah well at least she got my name sort of right but was struggling with Przygonski and Juszkiewich. She also announced Collin Mercer to be from Germany while he is from GBR, Brittian.

The prologue was fun but slippery for the quads and I can just imagine how slippery it was for the bikes. The fastest 15 quads and bikes could choose where they would start the following day. I was nicely in the middle of the pack and would start 11th the next morning. The conditions was shit at best, with wind and a lot of dust, got my roadbook went to the hotel to mark it and when we went to put the roadbooks on the quads it was raining cats and dogs, we all thought it would be lekker the following morning, it turned out not to be lekker, still high winds and lots of dust.
We all sat at the start and was later told to ride in convoy to the refueling point where a final decision will made if we would start or not. Eventually we were told to get on our own time to the bivouac about 120kms away by tar road. We stopped at a petrol station for chicken biryani and was joined by Helder Rodriques, very nice guy.

The following morning, I was waved off and after about 130kms liaison the rally proper started, I took off and relaxed and quickly got into a nice rhythm and start to overtake the quads and some of the bikes in front of me.  About 50 km from the service point I came way to fast over a sweeping dune, braked and broadsided the quad towards the steep side of the lip and before I could counter steer left, hit the lip and topple over! The quad and I rolled separately down the dune, I got up, try to shake some of the sand from me, got on the quad only to realize the left rear tyre came off the rim….FUCK….I tried to inflate the tire with tire weld but to no avail and as I was trying to inflate I heard one of the most awesome sounds ever, 6, 450 rally bikes bearing down on me, what a jaw dropping moment as Sunderland, Coma, Rodriques, Barreda-Bort, Goncalves and Israel came racing past, all within a second of each other.  I thought fuck it, I will ride the quad till service and have the tyre changed there. For the remaining 50 km, I took it easy but still maintained an average speed of 55km/h.  I refueled and the mechanics changed the tyre and 15 minutes later took off again and finished the stage in 4 hours 40 min, lying in 21st overall and 7th in the quad class.

Later we heard that Helder and Israel had an accident, apparently at refueling Helder told Israel to leave some gap between them as Helder could hear him all the time following him, well what happened is that Helder jumped a dune fell and scampered away from his bike as he could hear Israel’s bike, Israel landed on top of Helders bike, broke his arm and broke Helders rear shock. Word went around that Israel’s RB was still showing the refuel point, so speculation is about that he just followed Helder blindly and not navigating at all.

The next morning saw me take off and again I found my rhythm and at the same time took it easy and careful of the drop-offs that some of the dunes have. These drop-offs are nasty because they have a nice and gentle rise with a near vertical drop on the other side, some in excess of 4 metres. On some of the sabkahs (flat plains) I clocked a top speed of 132km/h. For this stage the refueling and service point was in the bivouac. I arrived at the service point, feeling good and relaxed, drank some water and set off again.

Just after the refueling point we entered an area littered with these drop-offs I mentioned before.  About 10k’s from the refuel point I looked down on my RB for a split second and that split second was a split second too long!! I rode over such a drop-off, about 2.5m high, at about 30km/h and having no momentum or speed the quad bogged down  like an illegal Zimbo in Carletonville and me not expecting this shit was flung forward and I hit my face on the RB, ICO and front fairing and got knocked on the ribs by the GPS on the handle bars. That knock felt like a fucking mule kicked me on the chest! When I hit the nav tower I saw blood being splashed all over. Being at the bottom of a drop-off my immediate concern was that someone else might do the same and land on me and my quad, I pushed the up and down arrows on the GPS to set off the alert signal which immediately transmitted something is on the other side of that dune.   I tried to catch my breath and swore at the same time, but crap the blow on my ribs is tremendous. One of my team mates stopped and asked if I am ok, I tried to wave him over  and catching my breath, but in the confusion of me catching my breath and trying to wave him over in sign language that would have looked like someone doing the Harlem shake he read it as I am waving him off!

Another quad rider stop and I told him to help me lift the quad to get it unstuck, when he saw all the blood he nearly fainted and lucky for him, members of the sweep team pitch up and took control. They had a doctor in the car and she came over to assess the damage, I asked her to patch me up so I can finish the stage and then will attend to the cut. She, however, told me the cut was too deep and the helmet strap will just do more damage. 15 minutes later I was airlifted to a state of the art hospital in Madinat Zayed, where I got 23 stitches and was diagnosed with 3 fractured ribs. One of the cuts in my lower lip was right through and like Douw said I was seaping through it! The race dr advised me not to ride the following morning, but could ride the last day to finish the rally.

Blue is not really my color....

So the next day I went to PC2 and took a couple of pics and I can tell you I was itching to ride, seeing all the riders come and go.

Riding down to a point where the competitors need to cross the road, I saw the other Saffa, Nick Black, quad 143,
(http://imageshack.us/a/img16/9027/dsc0423sd.jpg)
being stopped by the chief marshal, he had a similar crash as me, and was also cut under the chin, oh the dreaded “quad kiss” however his cut was more serious than mine and that was him done and out of the rally  :'(

That evening I packed my bags as tomorrow is the last day and the whole circus need to get back to Abu Dhabi and went to bed, got up the next morning and felt rather stiff,  mount the quad and was the very last rider to be waved off due to all the penalties incurred. The previous night I spoke to the race director and the challenge rules are such that if you do not complete a stage you can with permission partake in the remaining stages and still finish the rally. They gave me permission to start, however I must start the stage and present myself at the stage finish, either by road or through the stage, and rode the quad to park ferme.  On the liaison to the stage start I felt that my ribs are pretty sore and I opted to just start and turn around and took the long way around on tar and then the last 75km of the stage until the stage finish. I was pretty sore but glad to have made it, I met Atkinse at the stage finish and set off with my team mates to park ferme where we parked the quads and bikes, went for a shower and returned for the ceremonial finish. This time around I was from South Africa and not Russia.

Rider 99, Robin Colgan, is in my books 1 of the luckiest persons alive.

On the last stage he fell  and broke his fairing, while a little dazed he went to fetch his broken fairing 2 metres away from the bike and the next moment a Mitsubishi came jumping over the dune , nosedived into his bike, rolled over back onto its wheels! Robin, the driver and navigator was truly shaken. I am glad nothing happened to him .

All in all a very good experience and I am looking forward to next year and hoping that apart from Kenesis more “outside dogs” will come and partake.

Sheesh, that's quite a story, well done again for pushing on despite your huge crash and coming back to race! :hello2:

You must have been riding like a man possessed to get in front of the top guys like you did on the first day!

How is the No 99 guy! Stories like that really scare me big time. Is there a big gap between the start time of the cars and bikes?
