Title: KTM 640 owners beware!!!

Apparently this is fairly common on pre 2002 models, it feels like the clutch is not engaging meantime the clutch shaft bearing is fucked.This specific one also killed one of the oil pump drives as well.Bike has a grand total of 21000km on.

Die eerste foto was op laas maand se Hustler ,jy moes naai, sorry daai specials gesien het, maar dan het niemand die fout met die gearbox,sorry gear gesien nie.

Op 'n ernstiger noot, het daar geen skade aan die enjin gekom vanweë die gebreekte oilpump drive nie?

Gelukkig het daai goed 2 olie pompe, so nee.

I would suggest that the engine gets stripped as if there was filings or cutting that came off they have likely damaged the engine. As the oil unit is one chamber - ie flywheel,gearbox, sleeve, sump. If there are filing then they could even have gone up the sleeve. You may have gotten away lucky but talking from experience, the filing got all over the place on my bike causing severe damages to the entire engine except the topend. Stripping the engine costing a gasket set could be much cheaper in the long run.

The motor is already in a million pieces,it is a paying customers bike, I will do no less, otherwise he is back in a month and I do not do bussiness like that.

It's a well documented weak point on the older 640's, that ball bearing must be replaced with a roller bearing.

I think I would loov to have a Bike even a KTM will do for now but my mother say NO and she is the one with the dow so  >:(

Now that is after service, you should set yourself up in Cape Town. It will pay off. We have some real chancers out this way.

Pity the owner did not take care of this prior to the failure. To the technically minded folk this problem on the pre '03 models is well known and documented.

KTMtalk has a "sticky"on the LC4 forum about the replacement of this bearing with the new part.

Any other 640 owners with bikes that are pre 2003 - please take note!

If this part had a more complicated name we could also call it a doohicky.

I am aware that is acommon problem on pre2003 models, this is just the first one I am experiencing since joining the forum, so I thought it appropriate to post as there are not that many of these bikes around in SA.

Is it possible to do the job without splitting the motor by taking of the clutch cover and basket etc.

Secondly can on source the bearing from the likes off, bearing man or is it agents only.

Jy kan net die cover afhaal,en die bearing is net by die agente te kry. Jy het 'n special tool nodig om die bearing uit te haal.
