Title: Wilddog up and about in the Cape
Post by: Ratel on December 28, 2007, 09:17:38 am
I have some sad news.

Adventurer asked me to post news of the unfortunate incident. Peaches had a big fall about 25 km out of Cederberg on the way to Ceres.

Adventurer doesn't know what happened exactly as he was riding in the front at the time.

Peaches is still heavily sedated but being moved from ICU to high care.

The GS was badly damaged and appears to be a write off.

PS - if anybody is able to contact Mark Hardy please ask him to get in touch with Adventurer.

Not good news at all!!  Was at Donford this morning and the technician told me about the crash and the bike he had to pick up in the Cederberg.  Apparently the bike doesn't look too good.

Hope Peaches feels better soon!!
Please let us know of any news?

In crisis situations, the last thing you need is for your cellphone's battery to die on you because your taking to many calls.

Mark said that Adventurer's phone is ringing off the hook ...

Says thing are looking up - they are moving her from ICU to Highcare today.

There's been all sorts of behind the scenes help offered as well (even a house to stay in in Panorama!) but for now things seem to be under control.
Adventurer is moving into their holiday accommodation this afternoon (in Tableview) so that's sorted.

Guys - hoping not to be too forward.... but discussed it with Mrs Goose and she agrees we should send an elegant get-well card & flowers (Peach Roses - appropriate...) to them at Panorama.

May I do so... does anyone want their names on it...contribute... ? i am quite willing to send on behalf of all?

Please let me know ... and we'll arrange...

Good one... please check this link...

Seems really nice, now we just have to decide on the size, but methinks a smaller one is better and less intrusive!

Just please supply correct details... i.e Ward/bed/name at Panorama. - or should I just use K's name?

Shameel - this place and its people have (more than ever) become like family.
My family.

It is amazing how, when it comes down to it and something serious happen, that all the differences are forgotten and we come together - be it helping out technically or with support (moral or otherwise).

This collective rocks.

Can we have a list here on this thread, as to who wants their names on the card/note?

Not good news at all - prayers for you Peaches and Adv. I may never meet you but hope to have the honor in the future. This thread just shows why the pack rocks.  GWS.

One for all dogs and all dogs for one.

Goose - just a suggestion - instead of individual names, the list may get very long- just send it from the entire pack.

Damn. 1st thread I read today, and it is this one. I go cold when I read about a biker going down... and it is even worse if it is a Wille Dawg... but this takes the cake. In a bad way. A lady dawg down. REally not nice. I hope things come right as soon as possible. For all the family. Eish. :(

Peaches, get well soon.

Adventurer and family - don't know what to say. Good luck and sterkte for the tough times ahead, may things only improve with each passing day.

(Never good hearing those words "biker down", even more so when they're part of one's "family"... Have not met Adventurer or Peaches, so whilst I want to add my name to the card, am not comfortable doing so. Best wishes to all though.)

Yip!

Please PM me the payment details as well!

Adventurer phoned me earlier (to say thanks for all the support and to find out about something else) - from what I could gather the serious issue was that she had a severe concussion and that was what got her into ICU. She was airlifted from the Cederberg. Now it seems everything is under control again and she is out of danger - even telling Adventurer where in the panniers what was packed! :D ;D

Her arm is broken close to the shoulder joint and they are going to operate on Monday after the swelling has gone down a little. She'll get some Touratech crash bars in the upper arm!

He also says there are no further issues with her neck or spine or anything else. Just the concussion that caused the major concern.

I asked him if the Wilddogs phoning and inquiring in a time of 'production mode' wasn't almost becoming a nuisance - his response ? He said when he phoned Ratel to post about it this morning he knew that the Wilddogs would come through. Even expecting 'mass support' he was still positively overwhelmed by everyone's offers and messages of support.

I did mention that I enjoy and is proud being part of this group ?

:D ;D

I really will try and be there when she 'klaar uit' from the hospital.

Just picked up on this as we are still out on our Wakkerstroom trip

Peaches - our thoughts and prayers as with you. May you have a speedy recovery
Adv - Really feel for you. Not nice experiencing something like this, especially a partner
Cherry - Heads up girl. Sounds like your Mom is going to be real fine.

Adv, we have SMS'd you
Not sure what you want to do with peaches bike, but if you need yours brought back to GP, I can send a vehicle and trailer down - no sweat
please phone me when suitable

Regards,

Adventurer just phoned and said that he does not have access to the internet and requested that we post this

Peaches is fine but will be operated on for the arm fracture as posted previously
There are some cracked ribs as well as well as some real colourful bruising all over
She is lucid and communicating well, but very high on pethadine (sp?)
The airlift happened as a result of concern over the concussion and she was taken to Cape Town as there are no CAT scan facilities in the Cederberg

Ratel will be "driving" her back home as soon as she is discharged after the op. Seems as if ADV trusts his driving  ;D

As he was riding in front, he is not sure what happened. Peaches also has no recollection of the event
The facts at hand are that the road they were on was a decent dirt highway with good riding conditions
There were no bends or turns in the road at that point either
There were however three vehicles that passed him coming from the opposite direction. Either 4x4's or bakkies
It is possible that dust could have been a contributing factor
Peaches bikes tracks indicated that she left the road in a wide arc and hit a big rock
The bike appears to have cartwheeled after the impact

No vehicles were on the scene and he went back to look for her when she did not appear in his mirrors after a while

She rides a GS1200ADV
The bike is definately damaged beyond repair.
The panniers and top box are all ripped off
The sump was ripped off the engine
Handlebars are bent and both wheels rims are wrecked

ADV wants to know nothing about having HIS bike trailered back, and will be riding back to GP
Cherry is also holding up exceptionally well

He just chuckled!

Mark spent some time with Adventurer and Peaches yesterday.  Operation on Monday only but all looking positive.  Spirits are good (wouldn't have expected anything else).

We will do our best to make sure we help in any way we can.

Adventurer and Peaches are blown away by all the support.

We can only keep you updated intermittently due to my PC going down as well, but will do our best from our side.

Post by: Adventurer on December 29, 2007, 12:15:27 pm
Thanks for all the support, great to be part of such a group.
Far too much info to read for now, will go through it asap.
logged in on Peter Styvescent's PC.
Peaches (Carol Beine for those that don't know her full name) is much better this morning but they are concerned about the swelling in her shoulder, it needs to come down before they can operate, hopefully on Monday. Her concussion (the biggest concern) is improving and she is quite lucid, already giving the hospital staff kark, she was able to eat breakfast this morning.
All going well she will be discharged on Wednesday next week and will fly home on Friday or Saturday.
We have just stripped some of the parts off her bike, pannier brackets etc and PS will courier them back to JHB for me. Her bike is surely a write off, smashed instruments, headlight, screen, handlebars, motor casing burst, topbox and mounting ripped off, complete rear section broken, footpegs and mountings bent and who knows what else is stuffed.....
The only baggage that stayed on the bike was the SW Motech tankbag, the spare visor inside got split and everything else in there was flattened.
The H&B panniers flew off the bike but are still in good shape.
A big thanks to Alfred of Donford BMW for recovering the bike, unbeknown to me it was taken to a nearby lodge where he found it and then had to be taken back to the crash site to find the panniers that I hid away, he got back to Ceres after midnight.
Another big thanks to Go Girl who has lent me her bakkie, and to Mark Hardy for spending time at the hospital with us.
Cherry has been a pillar of strength as well.
Once again, a big thanks to all on this forum.
Myself and Cherry are staying at Table View Cabanas, (not far from Doodles ;D ;Dwhere we might pop into this afternoon)
Carol is at Panarama Medi Clinic and hopefully will  be moved to a general ward later today, anyone is welcome to contact me, it's good for the spirit. ;D
Last but but not least, a big thanks to Mark Webster of Outback Africa who was at Panarama to meet the chopper (Cherry flew with Peaches) and for putting us up in his lodge on Thursday night.

Flowers & cards delivered!!!  ;D

Guys & gals... meeting Kurt, Carol & Cherry - well it was great - although circumstances could have been better.
Let me tell you all one thing... this family is the best. I saw the love and support that they have for each other and noticed the grimace on Carol's face when she moved herself in the bed to a better sitting position... NOT A SOUND!! not an eina or ouch at all.. and yep I know there were drugs, but they only numb the pain & make it a bit more bearable.
She's a gal & a half... most blokes would have moaned and called for support... not Peaches... and what's more, she's looking forward to her new scoot.

Truly a huge inspiration to my wife & me...  and we wish her all the very best for the op on Monday, and hope to meet up with them sooner rather than later.

Our thoughts and wishes are with all of them through this trying time... and remember that although you did not have much orf a holiday, Cape Town is always here and we will always welcome you back (I'm sure free accomodation... transport... etc) whenever you are ready.

Kurt - you have a fantastic wife and family - look after them mate!  ;D

Kind regards
Peter & Jenni

All in all, you are blessed with how things turned out. You had cellphone reception, an airlift could be organised, no internal injuries (organs, etc).

Good luck to Peaches and hope she rides again soon!! ;D

ADV I'm very very glad Peaches is Ok.  I was seriously considering buying my wife a bike as well - but I must admit Peaches's accident got me thinking - maybe it is not such a great idea.

Again I'm very glad it all worked out in the end  ;) ;D

Doodles at around 6pm.As far as this incident putting anyone off biking, no.absolutely not!Peaches wants to be back on a bike asap and has my full support.although it can be risky,so is going to the shop. And riding is far more fun than going shopping. We all fall off at some stage,it is part of the game.

No, don't start thinking like that. An accident is just that, an accident. They happen all the time, no matter how careful you are. I also thought about MM's future safety after seeing this tread and realized that worrying about it won't do much good. Just be careful out there. And that won't even help sometimes.....

I will be there and we (me and Vicky Vicky and I) will try and make it on time - I get off work at about 17:00 and then still need to do a 70km round trip to pick up Vicky and get to Doodles.

I take it you're not planning on being done by 18:35, so it shouldn't be a problem...

Hey ADV, Peaches & Cherry - lekker to have met you guys... great to meet some of the others at Doodles as well ...... but hell peeps my memory fails me for all the names.

So great to have seen Peaches in better spirits.. but noticed the strain, and no blerrie wonder. Jenni said afterwards that she couldn't believe C actually came out last night... should have been at home with her feet up... less stress.

You guys must take it easy.. hope the girls have a good flight home... and ADV - as I mentioned before... take it easy on your scoot back home.... rather try meet some of the WD's on the way...and break the trip.

All the very best guys and hope to drink to your health again soon.

Best and kindest regards

Only logged onto WD this evening after getting back ourselves only yesterday.

When I saw ADV post looking for a riding buddy after Peaches' mishap I went hunting for a thread with more info and eventually found this one.

Although only getting the news 'after the fact' am glad to hear that Peaches is recovering and doing fine - and is probably home by now!

Adv - ride safe on the way back.

Morning WD's,

Feeling less like scrambled brains this morning ;D, thought I will make a quick post and thank all those people who have helped me and were such great support. WD rock!!!!!!!

I want to thank all the Dogs who rallied round when I binned my bike, particularlly Goose and his lovely lady Jenny who visited me in hospital and brought good cheer, flowers and card with wishes from so many people, to Xerys who also visited me in hospital spoiling me with more flowers. Thank you to Mark Hardy and his band of merry men who put on a show of skill in the hospital car park to brighten my day. Thank you to Go Girl. Debs, thank you so much for the generous loan of your Isuzu. I don't know how we would have managed without it. Thank you to all the dogs who joined us for a quick meal at Doodles, it was great to meet you all. Lastly I would like to thank my man, Adv and my daughter Kaylee for all the love, support and help, I'm sorry for all the kark and work I've created. I love you both :) :)

I eventually managed to track down the family that took Peaches to Ceres, got hold of BMW-on-Call, they gave me the number of Mount Cedar, the guys that decided it was unsafe to leave Peaches' bike in the veld, scooped it onto their bakkie (unbeknown to me) phoned BMW-on-Call to tell them they had this bike,(quoted number under saddle), luckily they knew the guy that picked up Peaches, he lives in Durbanville, they gave me his number and I could eventually phone the guy and personally thank him, Peaches also was able to talk to him under less painful conditions.
Next time we are in CT we will pop in and visit them.

The name of the thread was originally something like : Wilddog down in the Cape.

Then Carol surprised everybody by showing what kind of strong woman she is and it was decided to change the name of the thread to what it is now.

It was basically done as a token of support for Carol.

Thanks to Adventurer for mentioning this side of the story.
I heard the news of the accident from Thomas at Mount Ceder during our New Years visit not knowing it involved a  forum member.
Over the last 7 years of running my business I had to deal with a number of incidents / accidents / breakdowns and in every single case the reaction & response of bystanders or people who happened to arive at the scene of an accident first put all the negative yada yada about South Africa being ohhhh so horrible & dangerous into the right light.
The experiences range from recovery and safekeeping of bikes after accidents and breakdowns and transporting injured  riders to hospital all the way to a Ceres Karoo farmer driving almost 200 km back and forth to fetch tire cement & fix a puncture.
I myself also had plenty of people stop and ask if I'm ok while I only tried to relax my sore butt, take a pic or drain my bladder :D

BTW: All the best to Peaches. Hope you will be back riding in the Cederberg some day.
