Title: Sunsets ... a time to reflect.
Post by: Colyn on December 30, 2007, 08:53:45 pm
I am in the unfortunate position to stay in a valley where I rarely see a good sunset ... the sun sinks behind the mountains in the west quite early. So whenever I get the opportunity to shoot a sunset I go for it with gusto.

Enjoy.

This is a series of shots that I did near Whiteriver.

Nice pics Colyn. I think that the white border takes away from the impact of the image though. Just for interest, can do an example with a black border, and without a border, and post them up so we can see the difference?

Please keep them coming .. it's my oxygen.  ;)

We spend New years' eve on a  koppie outside Durbanville to watch 2008's last sunset disappearing over the ocean with Table Mountain in the background. It was just pure magic.

Here are some shots:

This is a good shot but the tilted horizon spoils it for me.

Yep dis a lekker shot ... ek sou die bokant afgesny het deur daai wolkie bokant die son ... dit sal die horison bietjie meer wegvat van die middel af. ;)

Yep have to agree.  Have tried it and it does make a difference to the shot.  Have made the same mistake with the second image. One of the rules of landscapes is not to have horizons centralised, but on one of the thirds lines.  Thanks for your input :)

I can no longer see your shots.

The rule of thirds is a good guideline but I have seen many shots that defies them and still give a good shot. Centralised horizons do have the potential to be disturbing but then again, not always. Composition has mostly to do with the mechanics of our eyes and following certain guidelines usually get a result that is pleasing to most. In your shot the problem for me was that the top edge contained a stray element that was not really adding anything to the shot. This I say from memory :)

This shot is a good shot but can be better by cropping the bottom. Not to move the horizon but to avoid the "void" in the right bottom corner. Cropping it now will help a bit but it could have been composed better in camera.

PS ... No malice intended and if my comments are disturbingthe peace I will remove it. ;)

My most favourite, that made me feel totally free and the king of the world, was a sunrise off the stern of a 35ft caterman somewhere off the Wild Coast. One of the most beautiful sunrises I've seen... as a Capetonian, I only got sunsets, which were numerous and always great.

Time to ressurect this thread!!!  It's too stunning to allow to die  :thumleft:

No matter how much doom & gloom we have in our lives............. a simple sunset can make one appreciate nature and feel alive again!

We are fortunate that we get the most stunning sunsets and colour displays from our patio..............
