Title: what bike to get?
Post by: gwild on September 06, 2013, 08:47:42 pm
Hi, i am thinking of getting a new/ other bike. The question is what to get? For thoose who don't know me, i am a short sh1t and dont weigh much (72kg). I took a f650gs (800) for a test ride on Thursday and was surprised how much different it is to the dakar. It is much lower than the dakar my feet are flat on the ground. The only problem, i think, is it has'nt got spoked rims. I enjoy gravel roads way more than tar. Any suggestions? Thx

We have been using a 650GS for dirt for some time now. Smilies in the mag rim and everything. The tubeless system no longer works but tubes fit in just fine.

Personally I would go for a smaller bike, more versatile but more maintenance and harder on the ass, its the rally in me talking. ::)

I have been thinking smaller but what? I like the long day rides with Andy, 500km as a day trip. :peepwall:

DR650SE
As long as you don't want supercruise capability. It won't do more than the speed limit comfortably for more than ten minutes unless you are totally pain free :D
It won't haul passengers over the age & size of a ten year old.

DR's come with a low suspension option from the factory. Cheap and quick to change between low and high.
They are light which makes them even more suited for short riders.

Riding a DR on dirt is like cheating. Especially if you're used to a tank like the Dakar :evil6:

I've got a low DR at the workshop if you want to check the height. The ones at the dealers are usually set tall.

The current price of R54,000 leaves plenty of dough for add ons, new gear and the first few trips
The cheap and simple maintenance will leave even more dough for future trips
