Title: 640 owners sign in..
Post by: goingnowherequickly on October 21, 2013, 10:03:16 pm
Since this lovely piece of machinery was discontinued ...???
I wonder how many are still in action & where ..
not sure how many were sold in SA, will try & look for that stat..

Not to distract from the dedicated thread, it would be nice to get a bit of info..

Something like this..

Goingnowherequickly..
Salt Rock KZN
2007 model - purchased 2009 17000Km
Sold 47500Km..
2004 model Purchased 2013 - 7500Km - Current

Since these bike are destined to become collectors items, it would be great to hear where you live, I might have to beg some parts ..

Is this restricted to 640's only, as I have a 625 SXC, but it's still an LC4.

2006, with just over 6K on the clock currently. I bought it last year & the silly grin never leaves may face while & after riding it!!

Please help!
What oil are the 640 owners out there using?
The book says 10w50 fully synthetic, any suggestions on brands would be much appreciated.

The are quite a few brands at varying pricing, I use Castrol Power 1 bought from makro at about R90 per liter. Made for use in bikes

Is it worth it? And what make?
Title: Re: 640 owners sign in..

What's the funny "clatter" noise when shutting down?

It's the starter clutch, sits behind the flywheel.
Quite normal when you shut down.

If it makes a graunching noise upon startup that's a different matter.
Often goes in the 40 000 - 45 000 km window.

Mine was just replaced, about R 6000  :(

I managed to get an 18 L tank from a Duke II & the seat in the UK. I shipped them to SA & fitted them. The seat pan took quite a lot of chopping to get it to fit, at the rear. Currently the seat gets help on with a robber bungee.

An issue is that my FCR 41 is really difficult to get to for the choke & hot start.

The mirrors are also close to the tank!

There's a guy that used to work for/with Darryl Curtis & he'll make me stickers for the tank for R600. I was thinking of doing something like this.

Just bought into the KTM family! '07 model 640 with 42,000 km on the clock. Needs a lot of work, but with that Bosun on, it sounds amazing. I want to respray all the plastics, but KTM Cape Town told me there is no sticker kit for the tank though... Any thoughts and suggestions?

Hey Guys.

Just purchased a 2007 640 with 7700km. I am looking for an after market slip on as well as steering damper. Looking forward to taking it on a longer trip. Hope it wont disappoint as I am used to my 990?

Stay off the tar and you'll love the 640. I liked my 640 way more than my 950 but I prefer more technical riding. Ride it a bit first and then decide whether you need the damper and pipe. Mine was fine in rocks and sand and never showed even a hint of headshake

The more I ride my 640 the more I love it and only wish for the SE on long boring roads. I have never considered fitting a damper and the standard pipe is good if a bit heavy.

Got the beast yesterday.

Awesome.

It seems my Tripmaster has only German as the language - I RTFM'd and there seems to be no option as shown in the manual. Must be because it's an import.

Otherwise, taken the luggage rack off for now, want to get new graphics, powdercoat the rims satin black, refurbish the screen, fit a low fender (just like the aesthetics), obviously service etc, new balck seat cover.

First time on the road in my life yesterday - 100 km or so on dirt, tar and highway - it's scary at first haha.

I really really want one!  (Took me 10 years to realize I'll never be man enough to ride my 950 properly)

Been eyeing a couple 640s for sale on Gomboom.

- How many kms is too many?
- Do some really vibrate more than others?
- Sell me yours/ your mates'? Stellenbosch area.

Love mine. Hope to never have to sell it. Only ever ridden 2 examples but on both I felt that the vibration was less intrusive than my KLR 650. Km? Dunno, suppose it depends on how much you are willing to spend on it. At just short of 80 000 mine still runs as sweetly as ever

Good day Fellas

I see that you guys love the 640 very much and have a lot of experience on the niggles and maintenance issues. I have installed a 640 engine into a 650 Husaberg frame.  On the first longish trip the CDI burnt out.

What could have caused the melt down?
Who can supply a compatible after market unit or good used one?

Thanking you all in advance.

Hi 640 people,

Back when I read the inter-webs (wilddog, advrider, horizon untlim. etc) , going through the never ending debates about which bike is better for whatever reasons, I made my own conclusion that a 640 would be what I'd get. I've not been disappointed,  love this bike.
BUT
It's 2018, which means every 640 in existence is now more than 10 years old. From what I can gather most of these are sitting with odos in the 20k - 40k km range.

I'm not online all the time, but recent readings of 640 related posts, I'm starting to get the feeling that maybe we've reached a point where parts availability has become an issue, but it's hard to judge this properly.
I see things like people do "Stripping for parts"-jobs, eg http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=214044.0
less after market stuff being available (eg http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=173382.0)
no idea what KTM part supply is like, but people do comment it being expensive
  vibes on advrider's 640 posts...

A quick re-evaluation, and I still don't see a better option, I'm still not feeling it with the same old crowd (DR650, KLR, etc), although won't mind giving a DR a go for a project , nor do the new bikes (eg new AT) which imho are all way too expensive :crybaby2: . None gives me the balance of factors the 640 does (price, weight, capability, simplicity).

I'm contemplating buying a 2nd bike just for parts, but I wonder if that might be rediculous considering the total cost then of having bought two bikes...?

what do you guys reckon?  :dontknow:

Surely motor internals won't be too far different from the 690? Both LC4 motors.
KTM missed the 690 adventure boat sadly. They would have sold in numbers I think.
Now everyone is harping on about the mythical 790.
Meh, dunno that that will be as cool as the 640 was.
Time will tell.

I managed to get home after nearly 5 months away & got the time to install my "new to me" sub frame. I did two trips over a period of 8 days, totalling about 800km. Smiled all the way!!

I couldn't even stop smiling when I got on the plane to go back to work!
