Guaranteed he was never shown how to ride a rig using the natural characteristics of a sidecar to your advantage rather than fighting them!!

My offer stands to train anyone to ride a sidecar even if they do not buy one from us - for free of course... - just the basics to understand the dynamics etc and to determine if sidecar riding is for them or not. Be warned though you may just like it...

Ek het geen probleem met die ekstra ribbetjies pak nie, MAAR ek was bederf met 'n toetsrit in daai karretjie van Keith.  Ek is bevrees ek is gehoek.  Ek verstaan dat dit ongelukkig nie net koop, hak en ry vir ons met die S10'ne nie, maar ek sukkel om geduldig te wag.

I am looking at these sidecar rigs with such longing  ;)

What sort of sidecar would fit onto a R80GS BMW or a R80RT?

So I picked these up from Humfree during my last visit home, only had time for short one day ride before coming back to Middle East but I see a long trip for myself and Silvia to Namibia when I return end July/August. Lots of prep work to be done and some modifications first.

Now that looks like adventure. So do you each ride your own ?

Humfree, is that the same sidecar frame that's on your 1200, because it looks lighter ?
Title: Re: Show us your Rig !
Post by: stevo on May 15, 2014, 06:12:17 pm
yes, the black one is mine. It was the easiest way to get Silvia to ride dirt again, so far she is very comfortable with it. and its a hell of a lot of fun.

Frame and bin is a lot lighter than fitted to the BMW

No real issues so far. On the first trip to Palmwag I noticed when we got there that there was some play on the swing arm bearings(that is the swing arm on the sidecar). Had to tighten it again but that was mostly because the locknuts were not tight enough. Have subsequently put some Loctite on it and it seems to be sorted.

I had a leak through the brake cam on the hub but a new set of O-rings got that one solved.

I have fitted tail light, indicators as well as a set of spots on the sidecar but have not got around to connecting it yet. Ditto with a stone guard over the spots.

One thing I will do is raise the mudguard a bit. The suspension is set very soft and sometimes the wheel hits the mudguard slightly when going over rough terrain at speed. Not really a problem but need to get it done.

There are a few smaller things like I have to mount the seat in a different way in order to remove it easily. On most of the trips so far I did not have a passenger and carry mostly everyone's camping gear and beer etc. It would be nice if the seat can be easily and quickly removed for this as it gives a lot more space.

I still need to build a proper luggage compartment behind the seat. At the moment I have just fitted 2 ammo cases on the back. It works but obviously does not look very good in terms of aesthetics.

Other than that I enjoy it immensely. My riding partners sometime complain as I don't care about the sand anymore. The head shakes a bit when you hit it but other than that you just need to maintain speed and momentum. Probably the best thing that has happened to me since I got my first bike back in 1973!

Hi Martin well done man your rig looks fantastic and I like the braai grid always around in the pictures.... Is it not wonderful not to have to worry about sand, mud etc anymore as the sidecar platform is so stable with the third wheel?
You can fit a steering damper to the front of your rig to help with the head shake in the sand if it bothers you that much, I don't want one on my rig as I find that if you are aware of it and hold on it's fine. The steering damper (old VW kind) tends to make the steering under normal conditions a bit harder and I do not like that...
Many happy miles and i fyou are ever in SA please pop past...

The KLR setups shown here are mine. The black rig is currently sitting sitting in storage in my garage. The basic rig is approximately R30k but these are very basic units.

Hi Tom

I see you off to the States soon?

I have left the black rig completely standard (ie as it was bought and made by Inder) the green one I am busy playing with, I am currently trying a torsion stub axle type suspension on the car so will see how that works out, if not I will just replace the original set up with new bushes etc.

That's roughly where I'm aiming with my build, but I'm adding some extras, so estimate I'll end closer to R40k for starters. Then comes the farkles  :eek7:
