I know not for off road, but would be cool if one was made for off road... :3some:

The Flexit was designed as a high speed cruising sidecar. Trimmed correctly for your cruising speed it becomes light and actually "flies" next to the bike.

Using it on gravel would therefor have negated the object of the design. Saw it first in 1990 and was amazed by its ability. Its a thing of beauty.

My (and GSBoland's) uncle helped design the 'H' frame that connects the Flexit to the bike (He started Davey Engineering in George).
Ingenious design and having ridden in it as a young laaitie I remember it as yesterday and yes - it does feel like you are flying - especially through the twisties when the 'lean with the bike' design really come into its own.

I will also like something like this but the Ural is just too slow. I need to cruize @ 110 at least, not 80!

Agree 100% with you.  Imagine a Namibia trip of say 8 000km at 80km/h.   :eek7:  That's not to bad on the gravel, but those long streched there and back.  The sun will bake you to pieces.   :imaposer:

I love some of the comments and must agree with the one guy. A 1930's desighn and gearing never meant for anything other than backroads and even 'no roads'. As I recall correctly it was used in the military.to ride it at it's full potential (70mhr) will cause some problems over time. It's reccomended cruising speeds stil 50-55mph. The fuel injection is a good thing because it's actually more reliable than carbs as we all know. Hardly ever will fi give any problems and Bosch was also involved in the development. I think this is a step forward as well as the disc brakes and sealed bearings

Diffie, dis moerse sports, vernaam as jy die kinders wil saamry.
Ek verneem daai 1ste rat is lekker sterk.

Dink jy ek mis iets, enige raad sal waardeer word.

I'm not sue about date of the Flexit but seem to recall it being around as early as mid to latter 70's. It was a vehicle way ahead of it's time and never really took off locally or overseas. Something like the Citroen DS series.

I think it was the cost. I saw one for the first time in 1190 hooked to a K100RS. If I recall the guy told me he had paid R7 000.00 for it.

Funny though... it was the price of a good secondhand big bike. If you want to buy a decent sidecar today, its still the price of a good second hand big bike.  :lol8:

But they were things of engineering beauty.

my favorite: FLEXIT - South African designer, was tested on a track to 260km/h, and simply a clever concept that never really took off...

Second pic is not a FLEXIT, but interesting none-the-less!

Right van môre maak ek n aparte topic oop van my voorbereiding, julle kan insette lewer soos ek vorder dit sal opreg waardeer word.

Hi Difflock!

Ek het dieselfde bikes as jy, net die jaarmodelle verskil !
1) XT660R 2015
2) R1150GS Adventure 2002

Ek wil 'gaan soek' vir jou nuwe Topic...

Does this count as a sidecar, or must I repost under Girls with bikes?

Here is one of my paternal grandfather, (who died in 1961 at 71), with my grandmother and aunt (who must have been 2 or 3 years old, born 1935, 20 years after my father's birth, a real laatlammetjie), making the photo from about 1937 or 1938. It must be in the Schweifurt area, Germany, as he and my grandmother moved from the Opel works in Rüsselsheim, where he had been a master mechanic, to Schweinfurt to the Fichtel & Sachs Werke in Schweinfurt with Elinor von Opel, (who had married Willy Sachs, who took over Fichtel & Sachs from his father). Elinor is the mother of German playboy Gunther Sachs, and she was an avid car racer. My grandfather was her co-driver and mechanic in all the big auto endurance races in Europe. Elinor von Opel insisted they move with her when she moved to Schloss Mainberg, near Schweinfurt.
I never met my grandfather, as I was born in South Africa four years before he died.

It is an Ardie Spezial, 500cc with sidecar. it was manufactured in Nurnberg from 1930, with a single cylinder JAP-Langhuber ohv engine. Ardie made motorcycles from 1919 until 1958. The company's name derives from that of its founder, Arno Dietrich. The Spezial could apparently achieve up to 145 kph!! (But probably not with the sidecar).

One just has to admire the "protective" clothing worn at the time! :laughing4:
