Title: The two dinosaurs take a trip - HIGHWAY TO HELL
Post by: ALLEN I on December 07, 2013, 02:26:02 pm
This trip once again started with our asses (jukking) to go on ride again. Never realizing that this adventure would test our strength, endurance and stamina.
It would start out as usual with us seeing interesting places, spectacular views, excellent riding meeting new people as well as old buddies, to turn out going down washed away mountain passes and roads and to have to get our bikes across flooded drifts.

Plans were made via email as Ian (otherwise known as) Ian in Great Brak River was out of the country.

Monday 28th October - Meet up at Beaufort West and camp over at Karoo National Park.
Tuesday 29th October - Cruise to Sutherland and check out the stars. (Not the movie type)
Wednesday 30th October - Gooi a drive to Matjiesvlei Guest Farm, a lekker lovely remote place just outside of Calitzdorp.
Thursday 31st October - To The Hell, maybe we meet the ou himself.
Friday 1st November - NO plans we would decide which way.

That's the main route, details on how we got to each place to follow.

Like all good trips planning was made, kit to sort out, bikes to get a bit of attention, stuff to buy like a blow up mattress as I could
not sleep on my faithful stretcher as I had cracked a rib and tore my muscles on the left side three weeks prior to the trip.
You know us Bikers we tough ous so nothing a few pain pills won't help. Good stuff those pain pills they helped.

So now we are ready to start this trip.

Getting all the kit together to pack and a few extras before the start. Kit all packed on Friday 25th October.
Saturday 26th of October of I go to Klerksdorp as I decided to spend the night at my daughter and son in laws place.
Had a wee bit of a too good a kuier there. Partied with them and club members till wee hours of the morning.
Sunday 27th the plan was to leave early but as the head and body was not feeling to lekker only left at 14h00.

Stopped of at the Shell in Kimberly for a much needed break. Head was still pounding a bit.

Mmmmm she looks good nice and clean
A most welcome Burger and a cold one to make the head feel better, which it did and off we go.

Arrive in Hope Town, my plan was to sleep over in Brits Town but it just seemed too far away. Small world met an old friend and his wife there Koos and Liezel coming back from a jol in the Cape some where. Need to catch up on old times so we book in at the Country Lodge (by die Stalle Gaste Huis.) Glad I did.

Well this been Sunday the bloody kitchens closed and we all stikkend hungry, we chat to Jaco Schultz the owners son as the owner was not there if we could get some thing to eat even a sarmie would do. He goes out of his way to for us, organizes the chef to come in and make a meal for us just as it would be any other day of the week.

Whilst I was enjoying the ride Ian was coming down from Cape Town on his solo journey. A few pics of his route

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/28_zpsd4b6f7f5.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/28_zpsd4b6f7f5.jpg.html)

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/29_zpsab7f1f4a.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/29_zpsab7f1f4a.jpg.html)

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/30_zps0771ac6d.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/30_zps0771ac6d.jpg.html)

On his way down the weather was trying its utmost to catch him

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/31_zpsc05a5a34.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/31_zpsc05a5a34.jpg.html)

I arrive in Beaufort West I'm early as we planned to meet at 15h00 so I find a nice local place for a few cold ones.
Ian phones at 15h00 to say his still 80km out, no problem I say and have one or two more cold ones. This riding is thirsty
stuff on a man. Ian rocks up and his thirsty so we have another cold one. We buy some skaap tjops and wors and off we go to
the Karoo National Park which is about 5km away.

At the gate they explain were to go and in we go to the campsite.
The camp site and offices is 6km from the gate and we check some wild life on the way.
We get to the enclosure around the camp / office section which has electric fence right around to keep wild life out.
He, He we didn't tell him we were Wild Dogs.

Ok of course we now have to enter the encampment, pull along side each other to the gate only to find the bloody thing
wont open (don't scheme) the bikes weights are enough. I then check these wires in front of our bikes and I scheme to myself
hey man maybe we should move forward some more as they might open the gate.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/32_zps6c4c4cee.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/32_zps6c4c4cee.jpg.html)

See wires on the tar other side gate.

Tune Ian, Hey bud lets go forward and see if those wires don't open the gate (now my excuse is that by this time I've had
a good couple of cold ones so not all lekker up there)
Now the people that know me might disagree and say I'm normally not lekker up there, but I think they're just jealous of me.
So with out thinking this through as his normally the logic oke of us two, we move forward and then it dawns on him.
Shit those are electric wires as well. Shouts to me stop and to gently reverse backwards and not to touch the wires.
See told you ous, he is the guy you need on these trips as he is the ou who sees these dangerous things.
Just then a cage comes up from the opposite direction and saves my ...... ( Still scheme that gate might have opened)

In we go book in find a lekker possie and set up camp

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/33_zps6f0e7632.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/33_zps6f0e7632.jpg.html)

My tent

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/33a_zps11486cd7.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/33a_zps11486cd7.jpg.html)

Ian's tent

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/34_zps7e1797e5.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/34_zps7e1797e5.jpg.html)

Check plastic bag keeping meat cold

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/35_zps354a6b22.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/35_zps354a6b22.jpg.html)

A few refreshments, Tequila and orange juice.

The shop sells lots of stuff even cold ones, so I take a bit of stock for the night and some wood for a braai and we're all set.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/37_zps5a167216.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/37_zps5a167216.jpg.html)

Ian starts the fire so we can start to braai as us ous are lekker honger. He does a mean skaap tjop on a braai never tasted better.
So if you ous ever hang out with Ian get him to braai you some skaap tjops.
So off I go to "verken" this joint, meet the other campers which even if they rode cages they were a lekker bunch of ous.
Have a lekker meal and a few cold ones to round the evening off and then try to catch some zzzz's. My luck pitched my bloody tent on top of a cricket, he was enjoying himself in making my life miserable with his constant cricket noise.
So as I've said, been doing Biking for many, many years, know the tricks, pull two smokes out of pack, break the filters off and remove the paper. Shoved the filters in my ears!!! That will teach that cricket, no more cricket noise any more so I got a lekker peaceful night sleep. Looked for the little bugger the next morning but to his luck I couldn't find him.

Next morning pack up and get the kit on the bikes.

Some lekker roads to ride, as well as some small drifts to cross, nothing hectic yet.

Ian sees a sign saying Mountain View. So now we have to cruise up there.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/56_zpsaf801a77.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/56_zpsaf801a77.jpg.html)

Now Ian chatted to some Telkom guys who told that two lions had escaped from the game reserve and are in the facility.
So what, we would go up the road anyway as we are Bikers and we ain't bang ous. I tell Ian hey bud... don't worry the noise from our bikes will scare them away. We get about 5km's in and come up to an electric fence, no mountain view insight, turn around
and as I take a photo Ian is busy checking around and says there's movement in the grass on our left side. We did not go to investigate the movement as I was still not feeling so lekker from those lekker cold ones I had, and I didn't scheme that I should go and chat to them and tell them that the game rangers are looking for them. I mean hey they probably just want some privacy.
Instead we decide to high tailed it outta there with a stink spoed so they can have their privacy.  Ok, Ok maybe we were just a little bit bang.

Back on the road again about 30km's up we come across this spectacular sight.

Breath taking aint it, a marsh in the middle of no where, and of course we have to take a few pics as it allows me to catch a quick smoke and to concentrate if I should go back and tell those lions to go back to the game reserve as other ous also want to check them out. Nah, decide it aint my business.

Then its of again and we get the sign that tunes us we must gooi a left to Fraserburg.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/60_zps95a5466a.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/60_zps95a5466a.jpg.html)

Some easy sand roads but you can't go fast as then you can't check out the lekker scenery.
Okay you can go fast only if you don't want to check out the scenery.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/62_zps64bda2e2.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/62_zps64bda2e2.jpg.html)

Some awesome scenery. See I told you ous if we was cruising moerse fast we would have missed this lekker place, and then I couldn't of shown you ous these lekker pics.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/66_zps01a7817c.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/66_zps01a7817c.jpg.html)

Check this old a banded house. I've always been fascinated with them cause I try to scheme what they "jagged" on and how they lived. This possie checks so peaceful and calm that I sommer envy the people that used to stay there and scheme to myself why did they leave.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/67_zps143abd0d.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/67_zps143abd0d.jpg.html)

And then off we go.

We stop for a quick lunch in Frazerburg, was feeling very thirsty, but the bloody Bottle Store was closed, this at 13h00. No man some times life is just not fair, so we had to settle for a coke and a toasted sarmie and then off to Sutherland.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/68_zps7deeb1cc.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/68_zps7deeb1cc.jpg.html)

We decided to have a quick look at these big telescopic things that can check out other planets, but seeing that it was day time I sommer knew that these ous would not show us any stars or such, so we take a few pics any way, just to show you ous that we were there.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/69_zps8a4a16e7.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/69_zps8a4a16e7.jpg.html)

They have big ones

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/70_zps6cb0c2ee.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/70_zps6cb0c2ee.jpg.html)

And small ones, these ones most probably check out the stars which are a lot closer.

Then once again it's off to Sutherland

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/71_zpsb4d73110.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/71_zpsb4d73110.jpg.html)

Stay over at Kombrakind Guest House. Our usual stop over when we in that area. This time only to discover the owners got a mooi daughter.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/73_zpsfead5e43.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/73_zpsfead5e43.jpg.html)

Owners Daughter. Juanita, mmm lovely lady, pity she married, got to behave myself.
We go and take a trip around the town, end up at the hotel and have a few lekker cold ones and then we off to the local restaurant to fill up our stomachs with a lekker lamb shank, oh you guessed it and another cold one or two. Then we off to go check out the stars with even smaller telescope things. Always cool to see the other planets out there. Then back to the house and to catch some zzz's

Up early, have a good breakfast and of course no, no not cold ones, but I had to thank Juanita for her hospitality and then we fill up the bikes and head off on the road to Tankwa.

Some lekker dirt roads to ride, you can even do it one handed.

Get to the turn off to Ouberg Pass not realizing what awaits us further along and how it would test our riding ability.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/79_zps61a9cf5d.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/79_zps61a9cf5d.jpg.html)

The road leading to the pass. They were even considerate enough to send a grader ahead to scrap the road for us, someone must have told them we were coming.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/80_zps73d0954f.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/80_zps73d0954f.jpg.html)

Rain clouds are busy catching up to us, but seen that these guys went to so much trouble to make this road so nice for us to ride on, we decide we can't disappoint them, so we take a nice ride to the top of the pass.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/81_zps733aec93.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/81_zps733aec93.jpg.html)

Only to find this.

Still can't figure out why they didn't fix this section up for us as well, maybe we just got there to early ad they didn't have the time yet. These guys should genuinely sit down and make better arrangements. ( Not happy with them) should have planned better.
Well as I've said before, we are Bikers and we ain't bang ous
Decide that seems that these guys didn't do there work properly and we not lus to ride back on that lekker road that they fixed up for us, that we will maar go down the pass. That will teach them.
Off Ian goes and me following.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/82_zps7c6bec03.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/82_zps7c6bec03.jpg.html)

Dam rain starts to fall ever so gently and then I start worrying as the bloody rains gonna fall and my bikes gonna get wet and dirty. To late now as we already started the descent.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/83_zpsd8bbc0fa.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/83_zpsd8bbc0fa.jpg.html)

On the way down the first sections a bit rough, but still okay with a few rocks here and there.
Bloody things are skitting the hell out of me, not cool as head is still not lekker from cold ones.

 (http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/86_zps1d4287c7.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/86_zps1d4287c7.jpg.html)

We are taking it easy as its a bit slippery in places that haven't got rocks, the bloody rain has decided to drizzle. (Can picture my bike getting all dirty.)
Dam but this is lekker riding and I mentally thank the guys for not being on time to fix up this road for us.

I even take some photos.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/90_zpse2348cc5.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/90_zpse2348cc5.jpg.html)

Some of the road behind me, could not twist around as the side is still a wee bit sore.
So I take it in my mirror, cool shot hey.

In front it looks like this

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/91_zpsa936c2e2.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/91_zpsa936c2e2.jpg.html)

Ian coming along after negotiating a bad section, we en counted a lot of them.
It looks as if Ian is enjoying himself "stukkend".

Ian catches up and goes past on the left track,

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/94_zps453ab8ff.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/94_zps453ab8ff.jpg.html)

I'm hugging the right track, it's a wee bit further away from the side of a moerse drop off, so I feel stukkend better. Little knowing it would bite me on the ass.
Next thing I feel my front wheel slipping to the right, check down only to see it caught a loose piece of shale, now I know if you open up a bit and gooi your rear wheel out to the right a bit it should rectify the problem, NO LUCK. She also spins out and I find myself in a ditch with a moerse big rock in front of me. Now I know these At's are tough but there's no way we gonna climb over that rock. So all I could do was hit brakes and stop, which lucky enough we did. No need to explain what happens next.
The pictures tell all.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/95_zps047b3732.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/95_zps047b3732.jpg.html)

My bike taking a rest.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/97_zps5bb59142.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/97_zps5bb59142.jpg.html)

The rock

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/100_zps399acd28.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/100_zps399acd28.jpg.html)

Lucky no damage to me or the bike. Well this is what it's all about. Had a good laugh at my own expense.
Scary if you actually think about what could have happened.

Well after I fell I jumped up and saw that Ian was almost at a corner in the road, luckily at that moment Ian looked back in his mirror to see this mad ou jumping up and down and waving his arms like crazy. Oh yes and shouting. (Still don't know why I was shouting.)

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/101_zpsdd94990a.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/101_zpsdd94990a.jpg.html)

Ian in the distance, he stops and has to put a rock by his back wheel to stop his bike from siding down the hill. Starts the long journey back to help me. Wonder what went through his mind at that stage. (Bloody idiot, I hope the bikes okay, or something in that sense.)

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/102_zpsb460d19c.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/102_zpsb460d19c.jpg.html)

Notice the nice road ahead.

Just came down this section

We get the bike out of the ditch and onto her wheels. A dented side protector and a few roasties is the only damage.
Dam these At's are tough.

Ian hops on the bloody bike and rides about 60m's down the road, hops off and leaves me to walk to the bike.
Bloody nice buddy. He, he. So on the bikes and off we go once again.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/104_zps7e6b1f03.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/104_zps7e6b1f03.jpg.html)

Dam that was scary but fun, those rocky sections took some doing...........Believe me

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/105_zpscb1a6ff2.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/105_zpscb1a6ff2.jpg.html)

The road the other side of the pass was a breeze, but one could still see the flood damage every where.

But hell it's still a good cruise. I think for some reason we were lucky to miss the flood.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/110_zps07cd5f91.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/110_zps07cd5f91.jpg.html)

We en counted a few more drifts along the way.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/111_zps68da6a94.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/111_zps68da6a94.jpg.html)

They were easy to cross " I think. "

And then to find that we missed our turn to Tankwa.

Well new plans are made and off we go towards Matjiesfontein.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/116_zpse8d7812e.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/116_zpse8d7812e.jpg.html)

We stop at Lainsburg to fill up the bikes and us at the Steers, Mmmm didn't get those beef tjops but had a hamburger instead, at least got some of that beef in me. And of course Ian's customary sweet tooth had to be taken care of. Then its on the road again.

Some mooi scenery on route

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/120_zpsaac29540.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/120_zpsaac29540.jpg.html)

Take this gravel road to Rooiberg towards our overnight stop at Matjiesvlei just outside of Calitzdorp. An easy little road to ride reaching up to 130km's on it but still couldn't catch Ian. He was riding moerse fast.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/121_zps096b488c.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/121_zps096b488c.jpg.html)

And it has some beautiful scenery on it. Lucky I stopped to have a smoke or else I would have missed this lekker scenery.
Ian stopped to take photos and I flew past him, like a bat out of hell and just left him standing in my dust. That will teach him he, he. Get to the split in the road and wait for Ian to arrive hope he hasn't fallen. He, he, he.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/122_zpsacefecd5.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/122_zpsacefecd5.jpg.html)

Ian rocks up and we have a breather, okay a smoke break and we discuss what were gonna do as we still have plenty of day light ahead of us and the next stop is not so far ahead. Now I had googled the road to Gamkakloof dam cottages and it looked like an interesting road to ride as it runs on the side of the mountain with some nice views.  We decide to go for it and we may even change our plans and sleep there.

The road. Breath taking and a nice ride towards the dam, some steep grades up and down, well worth the ride and there's also some dam nice scenery as well

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/128_zps06cd70d0.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/128_zps06cd70d0.jpg.html)

The scenery.
Then we get to the dam and it's a major disappointment, so are the cottages.
The dam is half "leeg" or maybe half full. You guys work that one out.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/130_zpsc5317954.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/130_zpsc5317954.jpg.html)

This section of the dam still looked good but as you got to the cottage section both dam and cottages (major) disappointment.
Sorry no photos of the cottages. We turn around and start back where we came from.

As I said its one hellave lekker road to ride, lots of corners and breath taking views. So I stopped to take a few pics especially of the slopes as my son doesn't dig them "he's got a hoogte vrees." Ian rides on, whilst taking his pics I hear a moerse rumbling sound, first thought it was my stomach telling me that it's hungry again, but then schemed to myself, hey my stomach doesn't make that big a noise, so I check around but can't see anything that could have caused that groot noise. Oh well so be it.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/135_zpsb9235dd7.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/135_zpsb9235dd7.jpg.html)

Start the bike and as I go around the corner I see what caused the noise, a bloody big rock decided to fall off the side of the mountain and come to rest in the road. Now I know what that noise was, see I knew it wasn't my stomach. It had basically fallen down between the two of us. Would have missed it if I hadn't stopped to take a photo or two. Just goes to show how lucky one can be. Oh !! and to watch out for falling rocks.

Any way on the road again to Matjiesvlei and we ride through another mooi pass.
Seweweeks Pass

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/136_zpsd63deb5d.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/136_zpsd63deb5d.jpg.html)

Ian riding away from me again, getting the feeling he doesn't like me..."Ek het  n binneste."

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/137_zps700ad4b4.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/137_zps700ad4b4.jpg.html)

The road running through the mountains, making me feel like a bloody ant.

Get our turn off to Matjiesfontein guest House and cruise on another lekker dirt road down the side of the mountain to get there.

Along comes Ian, dam the ou look relaxed on that Yammie. Check out his riding skills , his (sommer) sitting down.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/139_zpsbd901aa0.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/139_zpsbd901aa0.jpg.html)

Our stay has been reached.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/140_zpse2ecfc7d.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/140_zpse2ecfc7d.jpg.html)

The place in the middle of nowhere, but still close to civilization.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/141_zps3d183f5d.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/141_zps3d183f5d.jpg.html)

A place off tranquillity, no electricity, no noise, just a great view.
Ooops no food and we are stukkend hungry again. All we have is a tin of spaghetti and meatballs, some biltong and two buns, now I know in my infinite wisdom that this ain't gonna fill us up. Town is about 15kms away and neither one of us is "lis" to ride to it.  So I check out the Auntie and I schemes to my self that maybe she will help us in our time of need.
So I gooi on the charm and tune how lekker this place is with all the mooi uit sigs and how lekker we've been cruising around and all that other "goetes" as well, and that we came  in from the far side of town and that we wanted to really get here to check out this mooi possie that we did not have time to go to the town to buy some meat to Braai and stuff to go with it. and like cant she organize us a Braai Pack or some tjops or some thing as I'm so stukkend honger that I could eat half a buffalo calf, and of course we we would buy it from her. To our rescue, she says she would put some thing together for us as she cant see us going honger as we look like such nice ous.

Dam she did:6 Moerse big skaap tjops,a groot stuk wors, 4 tomatoe /onion/ cheese sarmies and potato salad, and to top it all she charged us almost nothing for it. Now I'm a big eater and I couldn't eat it all even with Ian's help.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/143_zps70b7da14.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/143_zps70b7da14.jpg.html)

Kit packed off and now it's time to rest. Doesn't Ian look all relaxed?

 (http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/144_zps00ab5600.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/144_zps00ab5600.jpg.html)
Well Ian looked a bit moeg, so I got the braai going and we had a lekker graze. Lucky I had three cold ones left let Ian have one and I had the other two. Then it was tequila on the rocks.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/145_zps633b4092.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/145_zps633b4092.jpg.html)
So I told you we couldn't finish every thing.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/146_zpsbbd752ae.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/146_zpsbbd752ae.jpg.html)
A nice skaap tjop and sarmie with potato salad for breakfast.

Check out this photo of Ian's bike and scenery......Totally awesome.
This pic belongs in a magazine, or even better on the front cover.

Ian stops at this intersection and has to wait for me as I'm fafing around on the road taking pics

Whilst he was waiting for me he hears a strange sounding AT coming up the road. He, He it wasn't me but a bunch of riders on a cruise. We enjoy a bit of conversation.

Check out all this lekker road to ride, nice squigglies, steep inclines, steep declines, oh what the hell "he, he"  it's a moerse lekker road to ride, a whole 48km's of it. Of course it requires the most needed smoke break half way.

Crossed a few drifts. Ha !! This one came back to "HAUNT" us.
We almost lost Ian's bike in this drift on the way back. Blooooody drift.

And there it is the Hell itself.

Now to find Fontein Gaste Plaas, which road to take sweat starts running, pulse leaping, ok, ok talking kak again, only one road forwards so we take it, only to find this.

The restaurant / shop / oh what the hell, you eat there and buy all your "gootes" you need there.
Get a few cold ones down. Needed it as the roads were treacherous. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

And of course a few random photos, for you ous to see.

Cool hey, especially those two bikes

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/197b_zps24d9bc6b.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/197b_zps24d9bc6b.jpg.html)

We even found this poor dude trying to impress his lady. He got the cold shoulder. Wonder what kak he jagged on. He, He.
Probably had one to many cold ones the night before.

Now I had in my weakest hour booked us two caravans to sleep in. While making this appointment I only had one cold one in me at the time, if I had two cold ones in me I probably would not have made this big, big mistake. Should have done the tent thing.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/204_zps5c99498e.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/204_zps5c99498e.jpg.html)

Ian's humble abode, he was (glad nie impressed) with his luxury dwelling. (Check the face.)

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/205_zpscd32495a.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/205_zpscd32495a.jpg.html)

My humble abode. At least my dwelling was more luxurious than his.
Both caravans had cockroaches in them, don't like the little buggers and neither does Ian. So we weren't to chuffed.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/206_zps131430f7.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/206_zps131430f7.jpg.html)

I was lucky enough to have this ou visiting me, but I scheme he was a bit de mooring with me as I tried to tell him about this lekker jol were having and believe it or not this ou ignores me sommer flat, so I tune to myself, if that's his houding he can maar go sleep outside. Catch the big ou and take him outside and show him to Ian. Scheme maybe him and Ian can have a talk as he might not appreciate my sense of humour, but he "kaps" Ian a flat ignore also. Don't know what his problem was.

Next morning I woke up to check his buddy on the roof inside my caravan and he was even bigger, but he also had a houding.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/207_zps36fc6444.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/207_zps36fc6444.jpg.html)

Our faithful steeds and our humble abodes, suppose it could have been worse. It did, it rained the whole bloody night and Ian's caravans roof leaked.

 (http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/208_zps67696052.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/208_zps67696052.jpg.html)

The ablution block, looks better on the outside than the inside. At least there was hot water.
Had a lekker shower and felt all better.
Decide we got to go and "verken" this joint. Hop on the bikes and off we go.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/209_zpse83d2ccb.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/209_zpse83d2ccb.jpg.html)

Me on my bike "verkening" this joint.

Now there's quite a few houses where these families lived, like a school also, and a kerk, even a honeymoon suite. Now I don't scheme the honeymoon possie is cool, I mean what the ...., lets face it by the time you get married you've already done the nasties, so all those "niskierage" ous around are just gonna hear ME SNORING. They gonna scheme hey this ous a woes. Agge nee man not cool. They even got these thingies in front of the possies that tunes you who stayed there and all the other goed they did aswell, makes a ou wonder about some stuff?

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/209a_zps2b4317f4.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/209a_zps2b4317f4.jpg.html)

Then the bloody rain starts to slowly make itself known, check raindrops on the water.

Cruise back to our humble abodes

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/210_zpseb1e1539.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/210_zpseb1e1539.jpg.html)

Check the bikes out. Dam mine looks pretty but she needs a bath as she's a wee bit dirty, get some lubricant out and lube the chain etc. At least now she feels better...I think you know how these woman can be. Oops sorry ladies.
We go and have a early meal and a few cold ones (Ha, ha and you ous thought I had stopped drinking.)
We had a three course meal for the .....wait for it... , wait for it... the low sum of R100.00 each + the cold ones.
As there ain't much else going on we want to get back to our humble abodes before dark as the road is a bit snoterag don't worry took take away cold ones.
Talk a bit of you know what and some interesting stuff and then call it a night. Not to say that we kipped lekker at all, I kept waking up to check if that big ou had come back and maybe brought some of his buddies with to sort me out. Of course the rain never stopped falling. Ian said he was also up half the night (leaky roof and such) He, he.

Next morning we woke up nogal bright and early to find this

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/213_zps412663c8.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/213_zps412663c8.jpg.html)

Check out the moerse river.
We contemplate for the next two minutes if we should stay over... yeah right pack up and go.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/213a_zps3987b1f2.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/213a_zps3987b1f2.jpg.html)

50meters from the camp site we come across this, Mmmmmm flooded drifts this can be fun, and this was the first of many to cross over.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/215_zpsab263a87.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/215_zpsab263a87.jpg.html)

Now the roads have been levelled with potters clay and they are slippery as hell (Thanks Cape Nature)
WE have to take it slow.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/216_zps19ad0b41.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/216_zps19ad0b41.jpg.html)

No stopping us, we are on a mission to get the hell out of The Hell.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/217_zps2e72be29.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/217_zps2e72be29.jpg.html)

Ian's in the lead, I scheme once again to myself (Hey man it didn't rain hard by us but somewhere else the heavens have opened up and laid it down). We crossed five flooded drifts to get to the Pass, they were reasonably easy as they had a lot of loose stones in them, the road was also okay. Ok, ok no it wasn't we had a few lekker slides on it but we made it to the Pass without taking a tumble.
At one place I was facing the wrong direction, almost went back, but with my keen sense of navigation at work I rectified the problem, turned around and followed Ian.

So I check out the Pass and now the old brain which has been lying dormant suddenly jumps to life and it likes screams at me, you wanna go up where? Are you ous mad, hell its raining and those rocks look slippery, jees man have you guys not learned from the previous episode. Huh, huh

Now I don't like it when someone or something shouts at me, so I get a bit de donner in and strip my moer, gooi the bike in gear and up I go. The Pass was easy enough as it was very rocky, all I had to do was take it slow and easy. So no problem. Don't know what was my brains problem, get to the top and wait for Ian who's also taking it nice and slow. Ah here he comes. A quick chat, he tells me that he had a chat with the guy in the 4X4, asked him about the crossings. No problem he says, there's quite a few flooded ones but they okay, except we must watch out for one that's about 30meters long and is deep in flowing moerse strong, leans out and drew a line about 15cm below the door handle. Shit I scheme that ones gonna be hard, but we are hard and ous and we know what we doing, so we once again ain't scared (Yeah right I can hear your guys thoughts) and off we go.

The Nightmare Begins.
The roads are slippery as snot, but we crawl along at a fine pace. We don't check out the scenery even though we are not going moerse fast. Our eyes are on the road as we fight like hell to keep the bikes up, doing 1st and 2nd gear and if lucky in some places 3rd.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/217a_zpsf9cbb57e.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/217a_zpsf9cbb57e.jpg.html)

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/217b_zps6ef6833a.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/217b_zps6ef6833a.jpg.html)

Got to concentrate, dam we having some nice fun but gotta be careful as one slip up and we could wind up slipping off the side of the Pass.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/217c_zpsb21f7313.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/217c_zpsb21f7313.jpg.html)

A drift comes up, Ian wades through it, although the water is deep it comes into his boots this one is no problem so we cross over.

Then we come to our Nightmare.

The previous day

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/217d_zps2aef0035.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/217d_zps2aef0035.jpg.html)

It looked like this with a lot of loose small rocks and pebbles which gave us a bit of a time to get over as they kept on sliding out from under our wheels.

                                                           Today

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/218_zps934ab81a.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/218_zps934ab81a.jpg.html)

The bloody thing is flooded (major)
Ian starts to cross over, I take off my helmet and it dawns on me there's no way he's gonna get that bike through by himself. The first section of this mother is okay, he tries to keep the bike to the right as its shallower and its the right way to cross over as the water is flowing from right to left, but as he gets further in the current is pushing him more and more to left even though he's trying to steer against it. Its no use, its starting to push the bike towards the drop off of about two feet. My brain which by this time has come to life and shouts to me to het my arse over there and help him. Now as you ous know already I don't dig it when I get shouted at, but this time I let it go and high tail it to catch up to him.
Bike digs in and comes to a stop as the small rocks and pebbles side away not allowing the rear tyre to grip. Ian's holding in for dear life and I can see the strain on his face as he's fighting like hell not to drop the bike or let the current push him more to the left (Can only imagine his thoughts at that moment, I scheme they were the same as mine. To drop the bike or if it washes over the 2ft drop we will loose the bike and most probably kit as well.) He's still trying like mad to get it to move, but it carries on digging down. Water is almost up to his thigh and at the same time I see what the f.... up is. The front wheel has reached the start of the incline. I grip the bike on the left and can see the relief on his face. He guns it and I push, no go she just digs deeper.
So in all my wisdom and from watching those lekker off road shows, I get this brilliant idea. Shout at him to give me a second and in my ultimate wisdom, even without a cold one I force my boot under his rear tyre, hoping it would give the traction we so badly need. Shout at him go for it and as he guns it I push like hell forcing the boot further in, the tyre grips the boot and pulls me back.
My left shoulder under water but she grips and goes forward. Ian pulls her out onto dry (well) dryish land. Ian is so relieved and the old adrenalin is still pumping like a lekker cold one through his veins that he almost lets her fall as he almost forgets to put the side stand out.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/218a_zps76b2bdb6.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/218a_zps76b2bdb6.jpg.html)

Dam that was close.

Now we have to still get the AT to the other side. Now by this time you ous all no that I'm a kort gat we decide that Ian will ride her through. Ians on the AT and off we go again, lady luck is on our side as the AT takes to the water like a duck and starts to go through a lot easier. Okay no side panniers and she's higher, but she's still digging in at places and I have to shove and push like hell and she bows down and goes on, as we get the incline Ian stalls the bike and I scheme to myself oh f... now we in the kak as I thought the plugs had got wet. No problem as Ian hits the starter button she fires right up and inches forward onto dry land.
I scheme the adrenalin was still pumping like mad that's why it went easier, or else we just moerse tough ous.

Now I have to wade back to fetch my tank bag, on the way back Ian comes to my aid and takes the tank bag. I'm buggered I've had to cross this drift now five times pushing and shoving the bikes, battling the moerse strong currents and almost drowning myself, it has taken it out of me. Now I know what you ous are thinking that me and Ian are moerse tough ous and we are WDs and Bikers, but hell a ou can only do so much. I get to the other side, I'm wet, cold, moeg and major longing for a cold one.

Looking back on this it was touch and go. We rest for 10minutes and off I go. Ian once again empties the water out of his boots, why I don't know as he fills them up again at some of the other drifts.

Apparenty some german guys also tried to cross over in a Toyota bakkie 4X2

I don't think they made it as we didn't see them again. As I said we were doing 1st and 2nd gears most of the way, as the bloody road was still like snot.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/223_zps27863076.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/223_zps27863076.jpg.html)

We encounter a few more drifts along the way.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/224_zps978bce0b.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/224_zps978bce0b.jpg.html)

But no problem, we take them with ease.
Nice photo hey

The rain is falling harder now and is making it more difficult to ride.
Will this bloody road never end I ask myself as by now I'm gatvol of it.

The last stretch and Ian almost drops his bike. Check out the lekker skid marks he made.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/227a_zps9bfd41af.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/227a_zps9bfd41af.jpg.html)

We stop off once again at the Cape Nature Pad Staal to get something hot inside of us as the tequila ain't helping. Hot chocolate and a sarmie goes down very well.

My hands are frozen.

The Swart Berg Pass is covered in mist.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/229_zps3a5387e0.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/229_zps3a5387e0.jpg.html)

Visibility about 30meters, but we take the pass doing 60km's is places and it felt like nothing after that bloody Highway To Hell.
Now on our club patches we have an emblem COMING BACK FROM HELL, Well me and Ian have truly lived up to our colours.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/230_zpsa36aca2c.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/230_zpsa36aca2c.jpg.html)

Me

Get to Outshoring and decide to call it quits as we are moeg and buggered from our odeal. We have a bite to eat at the local Spur and say our farewells and such. Ian's only got about 90km's to Groot Brak. (Lucky Dog) Me. I still have 1200km's to go, but then it's all about the ride. Right.
So off we go on our separate ways.

(http://i1319.photobucket.com/albums/t675/alleni1996/The%20Hell/234_zpsb59898f5.jpg) (http://s1319.photobucket.com/user/alleni1996/media/The%20Hell/234_zpsb59898f5.jpg.html)

I reach Brits Town and book in at the Trans Karoo Lodge. R200 per night back packers. Once again had a splendid meal there R150 for a lekker meal and a good couple of cold one s to wash the dust down. Then a hot shower and a early night.
Recommend this place, nice and clean even has a swimming pool and most important a safe place to park your bike.

Next morning it was up early as I had to get back to Klerksdorp for my sons birthday.

All in All we had an excellent ride. Had almost everything thrown at us. Dry weather, rain, rain on tar, rain on sand, dry dirt, wet dirt, mud, mud as slippery as snot, mountain passes, washed away mountain passes, washed away roads, a rock almost falling on our heads, an almost fall, a bike almost getting washed away, rain causing my bike to get dirty and most of all a bloody good time.

Distance Travelled: Far
Petrol Usage: Quite a bit
Food: Skaap tjops, no beef tjops and all other lekker food
Beverages: Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Coke, Tequila, Orange Juice and lots of cold ones.   :spitcoffee:   :laughing4:
Tyres: The ones on the bikes.
Cost: Lots
