Title: Father & son ride to Anysberg - extreme adventure
Post by: DikZol on January 12, 2014, 10:26:47 pm
I was planning to ride to Koedoeskloof near Ladismith on 6 January with my 8 year old son.  This was to be his first overnight bike trip and I was hoping for some good father-son bonding.

We made it to Greyton, thoroughly wet and the rain coming down in buckets.  We checked the weather and it was only going to get worse.  I made the unpopular decision to rather turn back home.  He was not happy at all!

So we were watching the weather every day and after checking out some highly motivating RR and vids Friday. I thought I should check the weather reports on yr.no again.  Turns out it was going to rain again on Sunday in the Barrydale/Ladismith area so we would have to postpone yet again.  I then realised that Friday and Saturday were going to be our only chance.  We hastily repacked and by 12:00 we were on our way.

We stopped at the N1 Engen and my son was doing OK so we pressed on.  Next stop top of Du Toitskloof.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110136_zpsf30f4404.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110136_zpsf30f4404.jpg.html)

We went via Rawsonville making our way to the R62.  My son tapped me in the side and said that he was feeling a bit tired so we stopped for some Powerade.  I thought the sugar rush should keep him awake!

We made a quick stop in Robertson for the obligatory pic at Klipdrift

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110145_zps27919c6c.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110145_zps27919c6c.jpg.html)

We made it to Montagu for a pie and a coke and last chance to fill up.  We then proceeded to the gravel road just after Montagu to make our way toward Ladismith.  It was soon clear that the heavy rain did some serious damage as seen here where it seems that some sort of dam wall gave way next to the road.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110147_zpsd830a65d.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110147_zpsd830a65d.jpg.html)

The road was looking good though and we proceeded.  We took the alternative route via the farm where the tweespoor was wet and muddy, but still OK.

It was handy to have a cameraman on hand to cover our first "watercrossing".

There were some interesting patches and this one seemed quite daunting.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110169_zps7584ba64.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110169_zps7584ba64.jpg.html)

Having a "hekbooi" is a bit of a luxury I can get used to!

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110170_zps8362da10.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110170_zps8362da10.jpg.html)

Yet another muddy and slippery watercrossing.  I am not used to seeing this much water on this route, so still thought it peculiar enough to take pictures of these little streams.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110175_zpsf15e2d61.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110175_zpsf15e2d61.jpg.html)

We had our first sidestand incident at this crossing.  All went well until just before the exit where the front wheel lodged into a hole and we slowly went down.  I shouted at my son to jump as we are going down!  I quickly got the bike back up and running again.  We both had water filled boots so we sloshed on.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110177_zps8755fe44.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110177_zps8755fe44.jpg.html)

We stopped on Oubergpas where we tried to pour some of the water out of the boots.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110178_zpsc45e7597.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110178_zpsc45e7597.jpg.html)

We took a breather next to the only windpomp that is close to the road.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110184_zps2f27e166.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110184_zps2f27e166.jpg.html)

I looked over at another section of the road which seemed to have some damage, but did not look too bad.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110190_zpsfa464d42.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110190_zpsfa464d42.jpg.html)

I clearly underestimated it!

Here you can see the line we took starting on the left hand side of the pic and cutting across.  Note the significant damage on the side of the road.  Talking to some local farmers later this is apparently an accident hotspot on this road.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110196_zps9d8d58c2.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110196_zps9d8d58c2.jpg.html)

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110197_zpsc3cbeaac.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110197_zpsc3cbeaac.jpg.html)

I spoke to one of the farmers earlier that I met on the road about Anysberg nature reserve as a detour option.  He said that should be a good route to take since my son would be able to view some game up close in the reserve.  I have ridden the gravel road to Ladismith many times, so thought it should be a nice diversion to go through Anysberg and add a bit to the treat of the trip for my son.  This was to be my first bad call of the day...

We turned left on the road to Touwsrivier and went past Hoek van die Berg farm.  There were a few watercrossings on this road, but nothing serious.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110199_zps9f84109f.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110199_zps9f84109f.jpg.html)

We turned right on the Bloutoring road starting to make our way toward Anysberg reserve.  We notably have not encountered another vehicle since about 5 km after Montagu.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110200_zps7901e4a5.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110200_zps7901e4a5.jpg.html)

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110201_zpse7ad3785.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110201_zpse7ad3785.jpg.html)

We got to this watercrossing which was preceeded by a very muddy section.  After taking the picture I thought things look good enough and we weaved through the mud.  About halfway through the water we nearly got stuck in the mud and we only just made it through.  I told my son that there is no way we return that way again.  This was to be my second bad call for the day.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110202_zps1d4b3267.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110202_zps1d4b3267.jpg.html)

Thankfully the road got significantly better and I got the feeling that we are starting to really get into this trip now.  The Karoo looked beautiful and I was glad to have my boy with me to experience this.

We got to a farm and I encountered this fellow "biker".  We stopped to have a chat and ask advice about the road ahead, telling him of our plans to get to Koedoeskloof.  This twat told me that many vehicles have already passed through and that I should have no problem getting through the reserve to Ladismith.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110209_zps3c8f8403.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110209_zps3c8f8403.jpg.html)

We had our second off for the day, luckily in first gear, going through some red mud.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110211_zpse8d92041.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110211_zpse8d92041.jpg.html)

This watercrossing looked worse than it was and the flat stones provided more grip than I expected.  I kept enough momentum and made it through easily.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110216_zpsc60e59e3.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110216_zpsc60e59e3.jpg.html)

We then got to the entrance of the reserve and the road looked good.

We stopped for a bit of a rest since my son's head was itching.  Yes his hair is too long, but will be cut in time for school!

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110223_zps332c8812.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110223_zps332c8812.jpg.html)

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110224_zps7ec5fcc1.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110224_zps7ec5fcc1.jpg.html)

We happily rode on and enjoyed the scenery.  I was getting a bit worried about the time since we left Montagu at 13:40 and it with the cloudy weather we might lose some daylight.  What came next was a bit shocking and should have been a proper wake up call.  I made my third bad call for the day to not turn around and go back.  I realised that if we go down this step I will not be able to make it back up with the pig so would be forced to make it through whatever lay ahead.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110227_zps0522a81d.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110227_zps0522a81d.jpg.html)

So I made the wrong choice and packed a few stones, making my way down this precarious step.  I knew if the bike went down at this stage it would damage badly.

I crossed the rest of the river bed wrestling with the steering and working the clutch and throttle.  Despite letting down the tires to 1.5 bar, the rear wheel struggled for grip for the most of it.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110242_zps64ed6bd0.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110242_zps64ed6bd0.jpg.html)

As my son was carrying the helmets over he slipped and fell in the snotty mud.  He thought it was very funny.  I did not see the humour at that point because I realised I might have bit off more than I can chew, worrying about what lay ahead and knowing that there is no way to return.

Surely the worst was behind us and it could only get better from here.  Time to press on as we were running behind schedule to make it to Koedoeskloof before dark.  And then we came to this bit where the road totally washed away.  Yet another warning sign that things are not going to get better, but there was no way that we could make it back up that cement section, so we had to find a way across this mess.

We found a spot to cross and I started to work the bike down the slope.  Unfortunately the front wheel slipped and I nearly lost it.  I managed to man handle the bike down to the riverbed and went across.  Getting out on the other side was more difficult than anticipated...how I missed a TKC at the back now!!!

Yes she was especially not happy when I called her that evening with my plans for the next day!  More about that later in the RR.

Lekker, maak my lus om daardie paadjies te gaan soek.

Daaie paaie (of eerder die gebrek daaraan) was gemaak vir jou 640!

Looks like you guys had a fantastic trip. And you couldn't ask for a better passenger.

I am very proud of my son.  He never complained about anything whilst riding.  I obviously did not let on how worried I was and after every watercrossing we just whooped and celebrated having made it through.  I would ever so often ask him if all was OK and he would just shout "ja dis lekker!!!".

Well done Riaan  (http://www.saforums.co.za/rlt/Smileys/default/Smiley_Clap.gif)

Great report. Keep it coming.
That looks pretty hectic. Adventure for sure.

How old is your boy? - He is 8 years old

Met my dik gat sal ek hom vergruis.

"Extreme adventure" s jy? :salut:

Thanks For Sharing,

one question, Would you do it again?

Knowing what I know now I would probably not have done a trip like this with my son.  I don't think it is the smart thing to do....BUT I can not for a moment imagine not having done this trip.  It got me in the right mindset for this coming year.  It made me realise that you should not necessarily listen to what all the experts say around you, but be clear about what you need to do and then give it everything you've got.  Failure is always an option (read that somewhere).  There were certainly times that I did not know how we were going to get across.  I have a saying:  "Commitment en geloof".  I actually said to my wife that I would like to show the whole family what we went through and hinted at the lot of us going back yesterday with my Hilux.  My wife was not as keen...

I would love to do something like this again with a 690 or similar.  These are the sort of things that test you and it is an awesome feeling when you accomplish something you thought not possible.  I am already looking for the next challenge.

So on we go thinking after each crossing that the worst must certainly be behind us.  We got to ride, mostly first gear, through this snotty mud we lead up to yet another serious obstacle where the river just dropped unbelievable amounts of debris.

Yet another watercrossing.  It was getting late and it was clear that we were going to have to ride in the dark.  I said to my son that there is no way that we are doing these watercrossings in the dark.  I started to prepare him for a night in the bush.  Luckily we had our tent etc. with us, but only a few energy bars and 2 litres of water for sustenance.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110314_zpsb8f1f924.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110314_zpsb8f1f924.jpg.html)

The landscape flattened out a bit which just meant that water was everywhere!

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110317_zps451cbcab.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110317_zps451cbcab.jpg.html)

We had several more watercrossings, muddy sections etc. and we pushed on.  It was about 19:00 and I thought we must be near the exit of the reserve and thus also missed the Admin office somehow.

We finally arrived at some buildings which I thought must be close to the exit.  Being after 19:00 understandably there was nobody in attention at the office.  A teenager came cycling to us and told us that the man to talk to is up at the chalets.  I followed him there hoping to quickly get directions on the road to Koedoeskloof.  Upon stopping there, their first words:  "Waar kom julle nou vandaan?"  They thought we came from the Touwsrivier entrance and could barely believe it when I told them we came from Montagu.  These people have all been stuck in the reserve for a week already with several people having been flown out already by helicopter.  The one gentleman, Niel, made it clear that we are not leaving.  I was still in "get on with it"-mode and was asking about the road ahead.  "No way" was the response.  Apparently the water was waste deep at the next crossing and that kinda sealed it for me.  Secondly it became apparent that we are only halfway through the reserve, considering that it took us 5 hours to cover about 85 Km, I realised it was time to call it a day.  The first good call I made all day!

These people were so generous to us.  Marius (the park ranger) immediately fetched one of the chalet's keys for us, brought coffee, milk etc.  They offered us some food (boerewors and potjiekos!!!!).  We unpacked, showered and reflected on the day's events.  They were keen to see the pictures, since they tried to get through with the Land Cruiser earlier, but could only make it 18 Km out and then turned back.

Telling everyone about the trials of the day served as a good debriefing.  Martin and Niel were very assertive in telling me that I should not try to get out with my son on the back and that I should let my son fly out with the helicopter that was due to come and get all the rest of the women and children out the next day.  My son did not think twice and insisted with me to take the helicopter out.  Now I was not sure whether it was the tough trip or just the excitement of flying in a helicopter (hoping it was the latter) that made him so adamant.  I gave in, despite not being comfortable letting my son travel with unknown people.

I discussed some options with the guys on how to get out, but there really was only one: Go back the way you came!  They told me that I could wait a couple of days if I wanted to, but I remembered checking the weather report before leaving and there was more rain coming.  I knew I had to track back and make it across all the same obstacles yet again.  I lie awake most of the night worrying about that cement section where I would have to get that fat pig up.

So the next morning brings some welcome sunshine and renewed energy for what lay ahead.  There was a marked excitement in the camp in anticipation of the helicopter rescue.  I was scheming how I was going to negotiate with the pilot to load my bike on that helicopter.   :P

The call came through that the helicopter is running a bit late.  So we passed the time walking around and taking some pics.  It really is a beautiful place and I am keen to come back with my family.

We could hear the Huey come long before we could see it.  Smiles and anticipation all round.  These people have been stuck here in rainy weather for days not knowing when they will be able to get out.  At least they were going to be in time for school!

Incidentally Marius used to be a parabat.  He told some interesting stories the previous evening.  It felt like I was born a few years too late.  Not having been in the army makes one feel somewhat inferior when the boys talk about the "good old days".  Made me think of my late father who also served in Angola and was a real tough guy.

You know it!!  I was wondering how a farkled 690 would do in these conditions.  I am hoping to do a test ride of one this coming Saturday.  Not that I am looking to buy one....just yet!

Haha - this is hilarious! I was doing a solo ride through the more remote parts of the northern Tankwa this weekend, where the rain has also done a lot of damage and made fords impassable etc. Actually had mapped out a route from Sutherland back via a few 4x4 tracks and Anysberg. Ended up a bit short of time and canning my plans and heading straight back via the lower Tankwa.

Now I'm gutted I did - that looks FANTASTIC! ;) I'm on a farkled 690, and it is a wonderful bike - do yourself a favour and test ride one! Only had mine 6 months but that included a trip around Angola and my respect for the thing keeps growing. It LOVES tracks like the ones in your pictures. As does my respect for you doing that on a pig!

Well done - I'm tempted to head back to Anysberg this weekend! :)

So my son was off.  My wife was not happy the previous evening when I called her with the plan to fly my son out.  I convinced her (or so I thought) that it was the best thing to do.  Her first question to me:  Why did you go in when you saw it got difficult?  I didn't really have a coherent answer and just mumbled something about not wanting to go back across some of the more difficult crossings.

So now my son was off on a helicopter ride, arrangements made to pick him up in Worcester.  The plan was for me to ride the same way out with the Land Cruiser following to assist if I got stuck.  The guys seemed to just patter around and I started getting itchy.  It was past 11:00 already and I had a lot of riding to still do.  I packed up and started getting ready to leave with or without support.  Marius came back after putting the fire team to work on the roads and said that he just wants to get something to eat and they will then get going.  I was worried about getting stuck and running out of daylight so told him that I was going to leave and that if I got stuck they will catch up with me in any case.

The sun helped to dry out some patches slightly, but it was also beating down on me.  Always something to moan about!!!  The bike felt lighter since I sent most of my son's gear with him on the helicopter.  I was determined and focused and wanted to get to where I can call my wife and confirm that he is OK.

It is interesting how obstacles are a bit easier to negotiate the second time round.  There seems to be more commitment in the throttle and more haste on the open sections.  Open section meaning anything from second gear upwards!

I got back to that stony crossing again where the firefighters were hard at work already.  I begged them to help me across which they reluctantly did.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110418_zps57e47cd0.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110418_zps57e47cd0.jpg.html)

I then found a different point to get across that ugly mess of washed away road, but managed to get stuck on the opposite embankment.  I was missing that TKC again!

I knew that I will probably not get a second chance at this.  It will either work or will be an epic failure with the bike toppling over and getting badly damaged.  I was praying out loud for power and balance.  I walked the bike, working the throttle and clutch.  I got stuck.  Unable to go forward or backward.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110432_zpsd32cbbcd.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110432_zpsd32cbbcd.jpg.html)

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110435_zps03449e4a.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110435_zps03449e4a.jpg.html)

I was disheartened and it was getting really hot.  I took out my pistol and fired two shots into the distance, hoping that the firefighters or somebody would hear it and come to my rescue.  I needed a few hands to get me up this obstacle!  Nobody came, so I prayed some more.  I decided to lay the bike down and pull it to the left to try and get a better line.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110436_zps405b7b41.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110436_zps405b7b41.jpg.html)

I picked up the pig and feather the clutch with ample throttle.  I made it to the top...Yeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!! I was jumping and shouting and just whooping.  The adrenalin was flowing freely and I was on a high.  Gratitude, greatfulness...not sure what to call it.  I knew I cheated being stuck there for a long time.  I was really blessed and lucky to be a few feat higher!

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110438_zps89577981.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110438_zps89577981.jpg.html)

The rest of the crossings went by relatively uneventful.  I was back on the Bloutoring road and the Karoo was showing its splendour.

This little watercrossing caught me out and I gently laid the pig down for a snooze in the soft mud.  Complacency is a b....

I got to Oubergpas again and called my wife.  All was OK and my son was safely back home.  I relaxed.

I got to the second last driffie before reaching Montagu and it was severely damaged.

This farmer on his bicycle came to help me so I handed him the camera after checking the depth of the stream.

I made the mistake of ordering a beer.  It disappeared without hesitation and then the fatigue hit me.  I ate one lekker burger and sat there for an hour.  I was moer toe.

(http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l322/Jerichorider/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110454_zps8a84b0f4.jpg) (http://s328.photobucket.com/user/Jerichorider/media/11%20Jan%202014%20Anysberg%20bike%20trip%20met%20Adriaan/P1110454_zps8a84b0f4.jpg.html)

I send my wife a message that I am on my way and cruised towards Worcester doing 160 Km/h most of the way.  The cagers were driving very considerate and were making way most of the time.

Last pictures at Rawsonville.

As I went by Du Toitskloof lodge a cop caught me on radar.  I was too late in closing the throttle.  Funnily nothing happened, so I just blasted on, ditching my plan to go through the tunnel since they would be able to corner me there and going over Du Toitskloof again.

I arrived home just before 18:00 and just in time to receive Marius' call to check if I arrived home safely.  My wife looked tired and I could see that see did not sleep the previous night, worrying about us.  It was good to be home.

Kyk, ek wil nie seksisties klink, maar glo my, ek praat van persoonlike ondervinding .(Read between the lines ......)
...of werk dit net in my huis so?

these  "houe" are only flesh wounds..you can walk them off.
She will eventually see it as a positive experience in the life of your son. She might be less enthusiastic to let you go for another but that is a battle for another day.
I plan to take my 8 yr old on a similar trip when next in africa. Hopefully with less drama but the same awesome experience.

There were talks of an father & son ride, but I think we should just make it a father & child ride to Koedoeskloof.  Guess I should start a new thread in Planning a Ride for that!  I am keen to still ride through Anysberg Reserve still since we have not seen everything.

Hi DikZol.

Daardie laaste groot verspoelde area waar jy klippe gepak het was volgens my onbegaanbaar.

:thumleft:!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fantastic stuff! Something the lightie will be talking about for years to come, and probably the reason why he will one day be a biker himself.

What he say about the helicopter trip!? He must have been super stoked.

You did amazingly well with those tyres in that stuff! What an epic trip, especially the bit going back up that step.

Thanks very much for sharing this. Great photos and story writing as well!

Thoroughly enjoyed this one! No idea how I managed to only stumbled across it now?
Well done!

:ricky:

Ek het die ride report baie geniet!
