Wino,
Interesting that you have posted these pics

It has always facinated me that no matter where you are in SA - in any town - you will find the most amazing churches

I started with an idea a while back to photograph every church in the small towns with a bit of a write-up and history - maybe a retirement project

..... maybe another "now" project. GREAT pics - well done !!

It was actually planned as such - I'll chat with wino to resurrect this idea - exactly as you said PH.  During our firts d/s ride near 4 years ago we just started taking pics of our bike in front of churches, because as you said - you'll find the most amazing churches in rural SA.  I would guess we have more that 100 pics of different churches between wino and myself.  What do you think w - a project like the passes or as is?

Some very nice photos you've got here wino.  These old church buildings are fascinating.   I'm looking forward to the church project.  Heidelberg GP also has a very beautiful church. I still want to go there myself to get a pic or two.

What would be lekker if a short history was included - eg: year built, cost, time etc and some defining moments.
You might just be surprised by the customer base as well

This could be an interesting journey...

The first church that comes to mind is the  Dutch Reformed Church in Graaf-Reinet.

Very beatiful and impressive building.

You could keep yourselves busy & interested for ages on that project.  I will post a list of reference books tomorrow - my vrou is 'into' old buildings & has an extensive library.

Hey Operator, same Church we saw yesterday on the way back.

Cool post

Tony don't you think that church is just the most beautiful church in R S of A ?

Well in my books anyway?   ::)

What I find interesting is that you can't find these fantastic churches in the urban areas...
The "platteland" always have the nicest churches!

Wino those pics are brilliant!!  ;)

This is a very nice tread, with awesome photos.

I am always fascinated with the architecture. The material used; rock, stone, wood.

.... and them bells!! some with the most beautiful sound.

Not sure if this qulifies as a church.
In the gardens of the Marianhill Monestary in KZN.
Peeked through the window - Inside it has an altar and just two pews - room for about six people.
The crash helmet in the foreground qualify it as a "biking" subject?

Post by: Eisbein on March 03, 2008, 10:03:50 pm
Very nice - I think sanctuary does count.

And this isn't a competition, so there's no rules.
Just nice photos of 'places of worship'.

The helmet is a bonus!

What was going through my mind when I was looking at all these awesome photos in this, and other threads, was that there is almost enough material for a coffee-table book on the country.

"South Africa on two wheels - Through Wild Dog Eyes"

One thing that hit me was a feeling of deep love for the land - something I think we all feel, and that you are far more aware of when you out there on two wheels.

I am a late starter - bought a bike the first time in my fifties - and it sometimes feels like I am seeing, and smelling, the country for the first time after having driven past it for fifty years.

I love Hogsback, we have churches "chapels" at home which sat about 20, our Patron Saint is David,(lots of other stories but not for here) The "CATHEDRAL" at St Davids seats a few hundred, but St Davids is by far the smallest City in the UK population 2000?

Some churches seen in KZN earlier this year.

The first one near Midlands Saddle and Trout.  The church does not appear to be in regular use and can be hired for functions.

I met a guy from the Aberdeen area who maintains that church steeple. The roof part is built slightly off centre so if you drive from Graaf reinet the whole steeple looks skew.

This guy had an interesting story on how he paints the steeple which I can't remember at all.

But he also donated a steel 20m high cross which stands outside the town and is adorned with lights which burn brightly at night.

When a light bulb fails he changes it all by himself without climbing up the cross. Any lateral thinkers out there want to guess how?

Christopher Forrest Rigg (1861 - 1926)
Christopher Forrest Rigg was born in Phyton, Scotland in about 1861, but his parents emigrated to South Africa when he was two years old. The Family settled in the gold mining town of Barberton in the Transvaal. Rigg's father wanted him to become a detective, but instead he joined the gold mine as a dynamite blaster. While still a young man, Rigg traveled round South Africa, to Port Elizabeth, Lindley in the Free State, and to Johannesburg.

Rigg's first wife, Petronella, was from Holland, and they had two sons, Gordon and Milfred. However, Rigg divorced Petronella in 1893 and she later married a Mr. Morries. In 1894 Rigg married again. His new bride, Lilian lsobel Elizabeth Moon, was from Robertson district. At the time of their marriage, Lilian was 19 years old and Rigg was 33. They had three daughters, but only one survived infancy. The eldest, Mabel, was born in Johannesburg in 1895 but died the same year at Lindley. The second daughter, Gladys, who was born at Lindley, died nine months later. The Riggs then moved to the present Bonnievale area in 1900, where Mary Myrtle was born in 1903. A pretty child and strongly religious, she grew up lovingly cared for by her parents. She especially loved playing in a certain lucerne field near their home. Sadly in 1911 she contracted meningitis and on her deathbed she asked her father to build her a small church.

Mary Myrtle was buried in her favorite playground, the lucerne field near her home. Later, the field became the family graveyard. The two graves on the right hand side of Mary Myrtle's grave are those of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Moon. On the left is the grave of her mother, Lilian, who died in 1949.

Rigg kept his promise to his daughter and build the small Norman-style church in her memory. He quarried stone for the church from a hill about 100 meters away from the site. This must have been a time consuming process. The date on the cornerstone is 1921, but the first Anglican service was only held in 1924.
The floor of the church is marble, which was imported from Italy, and the stained glass windows came from England. The roof is dome-shaped and made of stone from the river and cement. However, the roof leaked so badly in the beginning that Rigg had it covered with a 2 inch layer of solid lead. On one of his trips, Rigg bought the main door in Zanzibar. The door had originally been made for jail and was at the stage believed to be about 300 years old. The two side doors and the church furniture came from Thesen's in Knysna. The church warden's room is in the bell tower and is reached by a steel staircase. At the entrance above the main door there is a statuette in the likeness of Mary Myrtle, and in the background in a rose tree with seven roses, depicting the seven years of her life. The Mary Myrtle Rigg Church is the only church in the world known to be build at the request of a child.

Mooi storie of hoe?

Oldest church in Stanford and was built around 1880
The Moore family carved some of the pews and pulpit, and material for the thatch roof came for the surrounding area
In 1892 The Bishop of Cape Town gave permission for weddings to be performed in the chapel.

Saw these two in Mt Steward, a ghost town between Steytlerville and Jansenville, down the R338 from Klipplaat.  There's a station, a general dealer and about 6 or 7 regular houses (only one of which appeared to be occupied). I'm sommer going to buy the village and turn it into a biker place!

I appreciate your post and feel the same!

Amazing

To think that it was first a church and then later a mosque and still so well preserved.

It is a shame that through our history, there has been more focus on destruction of the old and the building of new for each ruling power, then preserving each historic building for its beauty ???

Then again,we have a very young history compared to Europe.

St James Parish. On the R612 just outside of Highflats. Lovely place, complete with a cemetery and a waterfall.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170929/6a379bb3a18c508ec0acb7a777be70ed.jpg)

This one is quite interesting. I found it after getting lost in all the detours on the Lower Lotheni Road.

Christ Church, Welshpool, Mid Wales, all local granite, I sang in the choir here as a kid and have several family members buried here, it is the ancestral home of the Herbert family (Clive of India etc) at Powis castle walking distance from the Church and there are graves in the cemetery from that era, it is not a church anymore, it is now a family home.  :o

When the original graveyard was full, the Earl donated / sold land to extend it as his lands ran up to the church (his line donated the original land and may have built the church) this is the view onto his lands. The castle may be visible in the background in the trees, if interested search for Powis Castle.
