Title: Noise from Final drive or drive shaft on uneven surfaces
Post by: Slaaiblaar on February 09, 2014, 11:02:56 am
If have experienced this since day one--- a noise from FD or drive shaft when riding on uneven roads, you can actually feel it on the footpegs. Almost like a bike with stretched chain and worn sprockets. BMW did a ESA calibration update but only thing that changed was the travel on the rear was restricted and suspension is hard.

The idea I have or how it feels to me is that tension between the FD gears momentarily release and then tension again creating a "backlash" feeling and knocking sound.

Does anyone else experience something like this?

Judging by your avatar, I assume you ride the WC.  My 2011 1200 does someting similar, but that is because there is no cush rubbers in the wheel.  When your wheel bounches, the tire accelerates. Hitting the road again it grips - slows down the spinng wheel suddenly.

My fix is to ride with the soft setting selected.  This makes the wheel stay in contact with the gravel better.

Could be the 290kPa tyre pressure.

Check your ESA settings, if you are riding one up and it is set for 2 up then that could be the cause

This is normal back clash on the final drive.

The 2004, 2205, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and the 2014 has that noise.

The 1150s have it as well.

Chill, dont worry about it and enjoy your bike.

I have a 2014, same noise.

Placing your suspension on Soft will help. :thumleft:

Nox

I suspect you are referring to some other noise
As the noise unique to K50 bikes are not found on any of the previous gses
It is so unique that my first K50 was replaced by BMW
Since then the local dealer has gone through elaborate lengths to  brief owners to only use 2 rider setting when used by rider and pillion!

Hmmmm - Perhaps I can get a new bike?

I know my final drive has a bit more noise than the old bike, but it really sounds like back clash to me.

What did the noise you hear sound like?
