Title: GPS on the LC
Post by: jj le roux on April 24, 2014, 06:14:35 pm
What GPS system are you guys using on your LC's? I've got a Montana 650 and not sure if I should just stick to it or get the Zumo version that already have the mount on the bike. Won't you post some pics of your system if you using something else other then. Would love to see how you have mounted it.

The Montana is nice, as long as the wheel that will be useless does not bother you.

I use the BMW Navigator V - the new one, there is no Zumo model which links with it yet, I know the Nav IV was a 660 dressed up in BMW clothing.

Anyway - i like the Nav V - as it links up with the canbus of the bike.

You can read more about it here -

The BMW Navigator IV and V integrates with the controls on the bike, the Zumo 660 will work in the cradle, it will have power, but you wont be able to use the features on the unit via the control wheel on the handlebar. BMW has additional software built in.  :thumleft:

Would you guys say the V is worth it to double up as a car gps too? Instead of buying two cheaper ones. I would however like the V on my LC

It does everything that the cheaper GPS can do, so it will do well in the car as on the bike. If that's your excuse, go for it. Is it worth R10k? Probably because you can, yes. The functionality is not that impressive. I would buy it but first need to sell the IV.

What are the main differences between the nav IV and the Nav V?
Title: Re: GPS on the LC
Post by: BennNevis on May 13, 2014, 01:14:53 pm
Main difference is the added functionality with the interface between bike  software and GPS

Thanks. Was there no interface between bike and GPS version IV?

Yes they both integrate with the bike, the V the screen is just bigger and brighter, and with Smartphone Link you can connect your smartphone to the unit and send routes, traffic reports and speed camera warnings from your phone to the unit.

For the traffic and the Camera warnings you need to pay subscription of R 239.00 each.  >:(

Yes, I know. And I will pay with a smile if we know that it actually works and warnings will help. If it is of no practical effect it is obviously a waste of money

On the garmin website you can choose a free trial option for R0.00

The website will actually tell you of the connected device is compatible.

With pleasure, it is rather difficult to recognise :pot:

In fairness I have to point out that the My Motorcycle Apps - A collection of three BMW specific Apps on the NAV5, are only accessible if the NAV5 is or has been connected to a 2013+ GS or 2014+ GS Adventure using the BMW GPS [Navigation] Preparation Mount: not the Four Button Mount. These are some interesting Apps and although somewhat redundant with the Instrument Cluster information, they provide a lot of data to the rider both on and off of the bike that the Instrument Cluster does not. - See more at: http://globeriders.com/article_pages/article07_gps/article07_nav5.shtml#sthash.A78E98qB.dpuf (http://globeriders.com/article_pages/article07_gps/article07_nav5.shtml#sthash.A78E98qB.dpuf)

Yes, you buy lifetime maps over the internet, download via internet, and ready to go.  Small download really. I bought maps of Southern Africa that includes all our neighbouring countries, and I think the download is not even 300MB

Het jy lifetime maps vir die Nav V gekry, wat ek van Pauli en die manne wat weet verstaan het, was dat jy elke jaar nuwes sal moet koop vir die Zumos en die Navs?

I still can't believe BMW will sell you a GPS without maps??? I mean, you buy a GPS anywhere and it has preloaded maps. Am I missing something here? Or misunderstanding it?

Regardless, you pay for the maps. This way you get to choose if you want Garmin or T4A. Many riders choose the latter.

Aha! That makes some sense, yes. So you can choose which maps you want to buy. OK I understand that. Somehow, though, I don't think that BMW in their wisdom thought, "let's sell the GPS without maps so the user can choose their own mapset". I rather think it was, "we'll sell without maps. Users need to purchase that separately". The fact that you have a choice of maps just suits their MO, IMO.

I was on that website, and i see that they have a lot of maps. Just, how do you download these maps? I cant seem to get even one to download. All the links take you to a third party site or the links no longer exist. Can you help to give some guidance here or make the process a bit easier for us please?

I want the newest tracks4africa that I see is on there... ???

Die Nav V is soos n heel ander GPS nou dat ek dit in die GSALC ingesit het, daar is nou soveel extras wat jy kan gebruik wat nie op die GT beskikbaar was nie.  :thumleft:
