During my divorce I had to make a plan to look poor on paper so I had my GS evaluated as scrap for R2k, my quad bike I "sold" to my boss for a grand and my boets bike was not on my name so she couldnt touch it.. :peepwall: A month after the divorce I "bought" my quad back again, started fixing my GS once I moved to PE and put my boets bike onto my name... :ricky:

Way back when I was was still a road biker and had to sell my BMW R100RS when I started my own practice. It is still the sale I regret, and the bike I miss, the most.

Yep, just sold the Busa, but luckily scored and used the money I got out to build another bike, so still on 2 wheels.

I will downgrade because of finances, but always make sure I have some or other 2 wheels in the garage for me.

I think most of us are only one pay check away from having to sell the bike.  For most it is a lifestyle thing and not essential and will therefore be one of the first things that go when the money gets tight.

Having said that, I think I am already at the bottom of the food chain with the 650GS; don't know if I can downgrade further; maybe a wheelbarrow. :lol8:

Have sold many bikes for various reasons ranging from finances to family to the bike itself.

Bigger / more expensive does not necessarily determine the level of enjoyment. One of my favourite bikes was the TW200.

KLR's are brilliant bikes; it's been said so many times that it is not the best at anything but can do what ever is expected of them and the price to maintain is affordable, I have changed oil every 3000km. The guy who bought my bike sure got himself a bargain. R34K - 2010 model fitted with raceway progressive rear spring, sw mototech racks and crash bars plus a brand new rear tyre plus top box and Hayness manual

Ag TVB it is only a material thing and if you can into that mindset it will be a little easier without one. I had to sell mine 3 years ago due to financial reasons too, but waited patiently (however difficult) for my situation to improve. All good things come to those who wait  :thumleft:

It's all good and well to sell your bike if the finances pinch, but when you get the money a whirlwind comes and swoosh it's all gone!
It is always better to make a plan to earn some more money, it is after all a very flighty commodity, bikes stay much longer!
Every time I decide to sell something I really like, I try to buy something with the money that will also stay around for a while.
If I need more money, I work more!

You are right, although it was a real sad moment last night when the new owner drove away with her.....great memories. As the sound of the engine faded away in the distance I got a real empty feeling for I know it will be a while befor I can call a bike my own again

It is not so much the loss of a bike as it is the memories attached to that bike.  :-\

Nothing beats the feeling of owning your bike free and clear.
Happily, my three bikes are like that.
So what do I go and do...

I buy another one!  ::)
Now SWAMBO is walking about with a bottom lip that sags more than a 80-year old's boobs.
So, I'm going to have to sell off one to get back to free and clear.
Fortunately, the bike I bought was on the same trip I have memories of on the one I'll be selling, so there is continuity there.   ;D

TVB, unless you are really tight, try and get yourself a really cheap 180 Bajaj/ Motomia 200, even the 125, just to be able to ride a little bit at least.

My friend Francois and his wife cruised from Cape Town to Cairo, each on their own Motomia 200. No problems, they still have the bikes and Francois still rides his.

But hang in there my friend, be careful and things must improve. At least you have a job which you seem to love, something there already.

I had to sell my life long dream last month, but I made a plan. Sold both my 800gs and the HD. bought a second hand 2013 1200adv. Costs a third of what the other bikes cost and now my financial situation is starting to look better. Now I can ride again, instead of just looking at my bikes standing in the garage. One  day I will own a HD again.

You are righ Dan, any bike is better than no bike.... Come to thinkj when I used to work in Sudan I bought a little TVS up there for 800usd (back the exhange rate was R6 to the dollar) and I have enjoyed that bike just as much as any other brand name big bore bike! We got a thing in SA about 'big bikes' and yes, they are great. However, one can have a lot of fun on this small 'piki piki's' (like they call them up there in Africa!

yes, starting the Flying Brick Store, i needed some extra working capital, although I had already put a lot of my cash into the project.

So I sold a beautiful 800GS, Grey, and then bought a much older, less expensive (superior?  :peepwall:) 1150 GS, which I also love.

Would not like to be without a bike, but doing a strategic sale, and then another purchase, to free up working capital, was a no-brainer.
Cheers

I had to sell my beautiful XT600 last year because we had a wedding to pay for. Luckily things changed and I was in the fortunate position to buy a DR650.

Try to remind yourself of all the other blessings that you still have in your life. Do not get discouraged, whatever you are going through at the moment is building your character. Keep your chin up an believe that better things are yet to come.

Six months ago I had to sell my GSA because my financial situation had changed for the worse.

Six months of being bikeless wasn't lekker.

Yesterday I took posession of my "new" bike. A 1981 XL500S. She needs a LOT of work, but to me, working on a bike is just about as good as riding one  ;D

In 2006 I was involved in a accident which left me in bed for 8 months .I could not continue with my normal duties at work, received a nice big pay-cut when I returned to work but at leased the company accommodated me in a position where I could earn some money while I recover.
I sold my GSXR 750's  and my wife's Ducati 750 Sport & Suzuki RGV 250.

When tings started looking better I bought a 650 GS in a box and fixed it , but that was just insult to injury ( because I expected Superbike power   ) , it did not fill the spot . The good that come from that , was that I started to enjoy dust and gravel roads. Now 8 years later things are finally looking good on my 2 wheel side of live. If all goes well I'll be bringing home a 2008 GSA before the end of the week.

Over the years I have owned many bikes (54 or so) and have had to sell many times to raise funds for some project or other. It is always heart sore especially if like me you have spent hours and Rands fixing them up. I have never lost money on a bike and I consider them to be moveable assets. There is always another bike available when you get the money again. I Never consider myself to be 'without' a bike but I am sometimes 'between'  bikes  :thumleft:

Your 100% correct.
It's like when people say they are saving up to get married. You will have the same amount
of money after youre married so might aswell go ahead and do it!! :deal:
In fact you might have more money seeing that youre moving into only one house.

Ja TVB, In 1987 I bought house, had a very nice Honda CBX 550 F2 pearl white with red trimmings, had to sell to be able to do some home improvements. Was not easy, it took 20 years before I bought the next bike, a TA and now I have the 800xc. (but, between you and me, I think the midlife crisis has a lot to do with it)
As they say, all comes to those who wait, I would add, and plan ahead.

Us Saffers are spoilt with big bikes methinks.

Since I sold the Busa lots of guys have come to sympathize and take pity now that I am on the Versys.

Yes I miss the power, but damn that Versys is a lot of fun.

I am finding excuses just to go blasting through town whenever I can  ;D and enjoy it more than I did my GS 1150.

And then it is comfy on the highway as well.

Come to think of it I had just as much fun on my CBR 600

Only downside is lifting the wife, but she must ride her own bike now  >:D

Out of all the mentioned bikes the Busa still will be missed by you I'm sure.....they are just so full of character and great on the open road! I always thought it was a bit of overrated, but I was pleasantly surprised when I took one for a long test ride once.

However, nothing wrong with the Verys - They are great bikes as well

Yep - missing the Bitch - she was amazing on the open road - even 2 up. And when some windgat blast past you, just open up, don't even drop a gear and go fetch  ;D

But under 140 km/h becomes a pain in the wrist and cruising around town is OK, but not fun

Same thing here. I always wanted a "superbike" while at school and riding my DT125 and the likes. Eventuay I got a DRZ400, but that was still too small.

I finally got hold of a beautiful TL1000, and I loved it. But after a few months I started to miss the ease of riding the scramblers, so I sold the TL and got a XT600.

Thing is, the smaller bike was so much more fun for everyday riding and cheaper to live with. I would love to have something like the TL again, BUT as a second bike, something to satisfy the power/speed craving every now and then.

Makes sense. But then when one is without a bike 'any bike' will do!  :thumleft:

True TVB, 10 years ago when moving from Gauteng to Durbs I did not have a bike, having traded mine for a beach buggie for the wife, so she would have transport as well.

Started with an old KLR 600 I got for a good price and then wheeling and dealing, fixing, selling, buying and swopping, until I now have a bike for each of the family that is paid up and clear.

Keep an eye on Gumtree, if you have patience there is some real specials that come up.

Seems I might be back on two wheels sooner than I thought, although only a CBX250 Honda Twister!

I can only arrange to view and test Saturday, but already excited. 15 000km and R12K.

Will update your guys!  :)

Have been bikeless for 18 months roughly 10 years ago when I did the reverse groot trek.  Not recommended for sanity. Won't do it again if I can help it.

From my first memories the only thing I ever wanted was a bike. So for me it's pretty much a top priority, many other things will have to give before I sell my bike.

I have to sell this, due to economic reasons ..................   :-\  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(

Racing bred, one of the 75 2012 KTM 450 Rally replicas built.

The bike is in Peru right now. Shipping to RSA can be arranged. Comes with a ton of spares, including 3 rims 6 tyres, sprockets, clutch,  filters, road book, ICO etc. etc. Basically a full house. Engine has 9,000km on it, but is titanium. Serious offers will be considered. PM me if interested.

Its worth US$25K. A new one is nearly $40K.

I've had to sell off for financial reasons 3 times. My first XR500, eina. My 650GS Dakar. Ouch! My 1200GS. Tears in my eyes even though that one was simply because I was moving back to SA from Germany and shipping the bike by air wasn't worth it and by sea too slow.

It's true that it's hard to let them go because of all the memories attached to them.
Now I'm older and in some ways wiser I realize that some of those times the money I got from selling wasn't worth the loss of the bike. Nor did it solve my problems.
It just seemed like a quick solution to a bigger problem and was effectively like putting gaffer tape on the Titanic.
Other times it was strategically wise. The trick is knowing which is which.
Lay it down to experience. You're a biker and somewhere out there the next one is waiting.

After the accident 2 weeks ago, I was also contemplating this, The BMW 700 is worth around 90k and has about R10k damage on it if i fix it myself. Insurance does not want to pay because we have given notice that we are moving to new insurance from the 1st of June, i am busy with a case against them at the OMBUD.

I asked what the settlement is and the bank told me R104k that means if i have to sell it like it is i will probably only get around 80K and will have to pay in another 20-30k to settle the bike.

So we decided to keep the bike, and then start to fix it up agian, spoke to the bank and told them that the bike will be standing in the shed for the next couple of months while we do the fixing. Cancelled the insurance on the bike, and will be using that money to repair the bike, when it is back on the road i will insure it again.

I hear you all say what if they steal the bike. Well it is not running currently so they will not get far  :imaposer:

When I got married, I sold my bike to make a down payment on a house. It took nine years before I could afford another one. I should have taken a bigger loan. It is easier to get by without the money you get from selling the bike, than it is to find money to buy another one.

Jip, know the feeling. And it somehow feels as if the money is not worth the loss of a bike. But sometimes we sell in crisis like when retrenched and there is no income to speak of.

Ja ! .... kom nou Tom!... this Transalp needs to be shown & ridden! :ricky: The first think to do would be to remove the Cat..... that thing weighs about 7 kg's on it's own, and once removed, makes a big difference to the bike. Gives better ground clearance, and performance. The sound will be nicer as well! Many happy (s)miles mate! :thumleft:

Thanks to everyone, I must say the Alp is quite a step forward comming from the KLR!
Tje ride is so comfy and they power delivery and torque in top gear just great! I always had to gear down on the Hartebeespoort side from silkaatsnek to maintain 110, but the Alp was picking up speed in 5th!

The only thing that I don't like but you can't have your bread buttered on both sides: fuel consumption. I have a steady hand and don't like 'reving' and therefore go quick through the gears. However, from Brits to Midrand and back returned 16km/l. Take in consideration it is througj mountains and some traffic as well. I think she is tuned a bit reach though.
I will remove cat as soon as possible but for now the budged is still a bit tight.

Then the forks was droped about 1,5 cm in the tripple clamps to accomadate a short female rider. That should be a simple fix though, will do it over the weekend.

I LOVE this bike. Mechanically I would say close to 100 persent and just a few scars cosmetically, but I will fix in due course.

Great bike and I want to kick myself for never taken one before on a test ride. Fact; I would have bought one sooner!

Great stuff  :thumleft:

Many happy miles on it.

BTW - I have only been able to calculate the Verys consumption this weekend for the first time and got 21km/ltr, which was with a lot of stop start riding, idling, slow going, but also some higher speed spurts all two up and then a bit of 160km/h + blasts on the highway

Max I saw was 192km/h
