Title: HELP WITH 690R NOT IDLING
Post by: LONG BOB on June 21, 2014, 08:15:09 am
I did about 500km ride yesterday and was thinking this machine is really hauling when lo and behold she cut out at low reves.
F#$% any how she could ride at mid range half throttle,  as long as i never tryed to open her up, at slow speeds i had to keep rev  otherwise she died.
I have the uk rally raid kit so stripped her down and found a pin prik hole in the main fuel line where it unclips and bolts onto the carb thingie.
I replaced the small section of pipe and she starts and every thing BUT after 1 min of idling she cuts out, starts everytime but wont idle for more than a min, she ok if you hold throttle a bit, but to reset i need to idle for 15 min and she wont do it.! Getting frustrated now.
And hell stripping is a good thing because i found wires rubbing and coroding and many loose bolts.
Does she need a diagnostic machine to sort out ?

Are you getting any FI light flashes?

Non. When the bike is cold she idles for 10 min then dies, when warm she only idles for a min then dies. Starts easy.
If you ride she fine only when you stop she dies.

Make sure your coil wire is secure to the spark plug. Most 690's with rally kits suffer from this at some stage. It only gives problems intermittently so check that before you start fiddling with maps and fuel injection.

hope this helps

As above.  If that checks out, check battery voltage and voltage drop.  If that's OK, check voltage from the rectifier when running...

Sounds similar to mates problem with his 690. Check regulator/rectifier. Codes don't point you in the right direction.

I bought that cable from Shlowey , problem solved. I read on a yank site that
setting your selector switch to "Bad fuel" also works. The bad fuel means bad for the environment ie. the boney is now correctly jetted !!
Good luck !   :laughing4:

Took it to alfi s machanic,he  checked the voltage regulator, says it over charging. Need a new one costs R1500, and must wait nearly 2 weeks.

Don't replace with stock, they are known to give issues.  Replace with a Shindengen, you will not need to do this again.

Take the injector out - put it on a battery to open - and blow it clean.
The standard fuel filter is not fine enough.
If that does not work buy a new 690.

Well its not the voltage regulator like alfies machanic said ! The new one puts out 14.3 when idling and the old one puts out 14.6, no difference. Bike idles ten min then just dies, starts up easy though, thats with old reg and new one. STUMPED

Keep the Voltmeter across the battery's poles while running.  Aim a Go-pro at the Volt meter.  Record.  Play back the stall moment and see if there is any anomality ito spikes/dips at the moment it stalls.  If nothing is wrong, I think next stop will be fuel pump.

Then the faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakn thing went well for 100km  and died, starts and dies, back to Alfie, after being pulled by a BMW, theyve had it for 2 weeks now they say its the fuel pump got low pressure, They say 4 grand for a new one.
Now after spending R1500 on regulator, R1600 on filters and labour they say fuel pump !

check the heat cut out switch - had a 690 at de Wildt a couple of weeks ago - in the river beds as soon as heat gets up it dies - get it in the open no problem.

Known problem - do some research. Don't buy the KTM pump: http://www.ktmtwins.com/ktm-fuel-pump-upgrade (http://www.ktmtwins.com/ktm-fuel-pump-upgrade)

Listen to Baasattie , he had the same problem. Put a battery on the injector to clear it . If you have a problem message Attie for advice. He has had 3 or 4 690's and has been through the mill with them.
