All Gauteng riders, I have a huge favour to ask...
Would anyone who owns a watercooled R1200GS Adventure (that is, 2014-onward models) be willing to lend me their windscreen for two or three days?
I want to have a straight replica of the screen made in acrylic or polycarbonate, but I can't borrow a new screen from any Gauteng BMW dealerships, as they say the bikes are leaving the dealership floors too fast.
Your screen will be returned to you in exactly the same condition as it left the bike - I promise!
Collection and delivery are on me, and I'm quite willing to leave a deposit with you if you'd like.
Are there any kind souls who would be willing to help out for a good cause? Please feel free to get in touch!

At least buy your own screen if you intend ripping them off...
-
Where are you from, please update your profile?
What are you going to do with the replica screens?

Amazing how quick some people are to jump to conclusions. :patch:
Actually, you snagged me red-handed. :-[ To answer the question: I intend to mount very stiff competition indeed to the BMW parts network by producing cheap knock-offs in the tens of thousands, and selling them overseas for US$90 each through a front company.
Then, when I've made my illicit fortune, I intend to buy shares in BMW, join the Illuminati, and retire on the back of everyone who ever saved their spare change to buy a GS Adventure. :deal:
...Ah, but if only it really were that dramatic.
I only need one screen. Singular, not plural. And it'll be in a light tint, for my personal use.
-
But, don't you have your own screen to use as a sample then?
-
Now that he has a profile I can see that he also has a GS and not a GSA :deal:
All that is missing is an intro :peepwall:
-
I have one that you can use.

Draadwerk, yes. I have a 2013 GS.
After four of the previous-gen bikes (a 2006 GS, two 2009 GSAs and a 2010 GSA), I got really fond of the wind protection offered by the large GSA screens. And since both screens on the current GS / GSA use identical mountings (on the previous generation, the GSA screen had an additional, beefy reinforcing bar), I figure, why not?
I'm after that bit of additional wind deflection around the shoulders that I had on my previous GSAs.
Edd, you're a saint. ;D I'll get in touch with you via PM.

Please keep us updated on your progress- seems like something I might be interested in as well
-
Please keep us posted on the price and post a pic or two. I will most definitely be interested in one as well!!

Just remember I am a shareholder in this venture, he is using my screen as a mold.

Edd, as I said: you're a saint. ;D Many thanks to you and your son - not least for being willing to lend a screen to a complete stranger!
(I've extracted a promise that the screen will come back to me - and thence to you - unmarked. ;) )
I originally got hold of Kenny from War Eagle Racing, thinking they would have a screen for the new GSA. As it turned out, he didn't - but he said he'd be more than happy to make me one if I could get him an original screen to take a negative mould from.
The screen went to WER early this morning, and Kenny says he's on the case. :thumleft: So it shouldn't be too long until I have piccies to post.
Kenny told me the moulding isn't complicated at all, which will help keep the price down. He reckons R1 000 to R1 100 per screen. And probably available in any and every colour you can think of.

There were a few powts here somewhere or maybe on UKGSer or AdvRider, where people actually bought the extra bracket somewhere to help with some more stability. I will try wnd look for it, unless someone already knows exactly what I am referring to

Can you give us a contact number for Kenny? This sounds awesome!

So... all done. See the piccy for details.
WER eventually made two prototypes from the sample I supplied. The first was made in 3mm acrylic, with a light tint. The second was in 5mm acrylic with no tint. I was given a choice of either one, so I tried out the light-tinted screen. The tint was okay, but 3mm acrylic doesn't seem to suit the forming process very well - the screen's curves were uneven from left to right.
I exchanged the tinted screen for the clear one the next day, and it was much better - far more even.
The pattern WER used to make the screens gives a lot more coverage than the original GSA screen - it's about 30mm higher and 40mm wider overall. I wasn't entirely happy with this, so I spent half an hour with some masking tape, my jigsaw and bench grinder, trimming it so it more closely resembled the original GSA pattern (though it's still about 10mm higher and 20mm wider overall).
Strangely, WER say they aren't happy with the way the colour renders on the 5mm light-tint acrylic. They'll probably still make you one if you stamp hard, but they have no problem making the same 5mm-thick screen as here in either clear or dark tint.

Hey Nick. Please post a pic of the tinted one?
