Title: 3WD's Guateng-Limpopo The Waterberg 2day ride. Report.
Post by: blazes on March 03, 2008, 11:51:49 am
Planned a 2 day ride from Pretoria to the Waterberg with Splash and Malgat ;D Splash met me at my house on Saturday at 7.10 am and we quickly did some repairs to his tank protectors with cable ties. Left along the back gravel roads to do the 106km to the meeting place at the Pienaars River Hotel ;) One new section of road was so sandy it felt like we were riding on the beach.( Have to go back soon with some noobs. ;D) Carried on through Boekenhoutkloof up to Uitvlugt and too a short- left to the Hotel to meet Malgat who was already there. Here are some pics of the start of the trip up to the Hotel and some of the roads. Malgat and Splash can add there photo's as i am still sorting out all the one's i took  ;)

The Route i plotted was from the Pienaars river ramp towards Moreteli, through Tilholwe through Dreigsloot and up to Leeupoort. From Leeupoort we skipped over the R516 and took a short section of tar to Rooiberg where we had lunch at the Koekepan.
After lunch we moved up to Olievenhout to Marekeli and road all along the bottom of the Marekeli Reserve and Rankin's Pass ( In pouring rain.) it seemed like the heavens had opened. From a hot sunny day to a wet, wet, wet day. Nevertheless we carried on riding through the Waterberg towards Vaalwater. Then ??? I NEED FUEL Malgat say's ??? Does that Africa Twin piss fuel  ;D
Nearest fuel stop 40km away. Had to cut the trip short by about 110km >:( Malgat ? have you filled up were the words we reminded Malgat at every stop. ;D We slept over at de Draai just outside of Bella Bella. Wet and Hungry we tried to look for a Gap in the rain to go and eat something. After what felt like hours of waiting we decided to just go. Rain or no Rain. Arrived in Town soaking wet ;D After having a good meal and leaving Malgat behind who wanted to watch the Blue Bulls loose ??? we left for our overnight cottage.

As usual, brilliant routes, varied terrain and a great weekend of riding. I struggled to get of my bike at the end of Saturday (very happy to be at the Bed and Breakfast) but all came crashing down - luckily not hurt. It took a good nights sleep to really enjoy the "roads" on Sunday. They seemed to fly by. We did take it a little easier as we were joined by two up riders. They had a very "pleasant" trip to Bela Bela which was soon changed to real adverture riding! We got caught on Saturday afternoon in the Waterbergs best weather. No place to hide but to carry on. My camera got a little damp which accounts for my one artistic picture. I hope that my sand riding will be just adequate to negociate a trip in Botswana. Time will tell. The pictures should be self explanitory (easy way out).

We did some last minute adjustments to the bikes and set off to Bella Bella for breakfast where we were met by two of my friend's who rode up from Pretoria to have breakfast and ride some gravel home. Had to look for some mild roads as it was Martin's first ride on the 1150GS he bought in the forum. I asked where are his glove? Gloves he replied are only if you are going to fall. ???

heres my take on the journey,,,,

a journey is never an start or beginning but all of that what happened at this period,,,,my journey with blazes will never end,,,the man is a genius with dirt roads and a pleasure to ride with,,,ok die engelsman weet niks van waar die petrol stasies is nie, but i'll give him the credit for finding amazing routes and a wizard at riding them

i connected with splash and blazes at pienaarsrivier hotel which in itself is breeding ground for jerry springfield shows and still prove that buggery still is being practised,,he he,,,i know u dont know what im talking about but go in the bottlestore on a sunday morning and tell me what you think,,,,,

we left under a sunny hot sky and soon were off the tar and having lekker gravel roads with sweeps and sudden turns amongs the thick bushes where a lot of birdwatchers were lurking and leaving there exspensive volvo's everywhere,,,also its donkey baby time and they are everywhere sometimes sleeping in the road unperturbed by the traffic,,,,a quick dash past some townships and next the scenery unfolds into a paradise for the rich and wealthy,,,miles and miles of game reserves wit teeming antelopes parading up and down the fences,,,what a pleasureto behold but a picture tells it all

1. the one and only petrol stop at radium,,,ja ja,,,,my fault should have filled up
2.this is where the tar ends and the fun begins
3.blazes coming in the distance along the road

already the clouds were forming and funny enough for a long time we watched this ominous cloud but it went right when we went left,,,and again we'd meet and it will always go opposite to where we were going,,,little did we know we were being checked out,,,the roads are nice and fast with easy to pick up sandy parts ,,,its just been graded and some rain had fallen previously which just made for a lekka days riding
next photos
1. blazes closeup
2. splash afar

at some turn we just managed to miss the flash flood building up above us and yet again blazes turned away from it,,,but it was getting the moerin for us, i could see that,,,but again we hit the gravel to another of the endless miles of splendid dirt roads and scenery,,,this is truly bosveld splendour and the smell of the different grasses and the cut trees mixed with the smell of wood fires constantly remind you you are far far away from traffic and the noise of urban dwellers,,,you rescue a tortoise going over the road and you scan the thick bush looking for impala, bontbok, zebras and other antelopes,,,then like kudu u happen upon a small village called rooiberg,,,,its directly onroute from jhb but we came the scenic road,,,u cant help but be sucked into the charms of this town, its places, surrounding and people,,,so we dismount, tie up our horses and walk into the bar loudly to be met by aussie tourists who stare at us,,,i walk in and someone calls my name and i meet someone i shared a flat with long ago at varsity,,,we forgot the names but kinda remember the faces,,,,so it turns out to be an old friend of mine and immediately youre welcomed and taken into their hearts as these people really like other people and as much as what we envy their lives they wanna hear about ours,,,,he is an ex pta guy who sold up and bought this oasis in the bush,,,lekka bar, restaurant with a fire pizza oven and huge spce outside where he's building ablutions and a swimming pool,,,,this is the perfect answer for the city dweller who wants to break away and 2 hours later is slap bang in the bosveld,,,swannie (the owner of koekepan) invites the WD to support him and will go out of his way to make everyone happy,,,i do think we need to support him and who knows we can have a gauteng bash there????
1.slowpoke and speedster blazes
2.me and swanni, owner of koekepan in rooi berg

so its off again and this time the thunder can be heard amd we again veer away from the lurking flash flood,,,,,we stop often, to regroup as each one does his own speed and thing,,,beeing three its easy, blazes in front , me in the middle happy with my new found rear tyre and splash the accountant bringing up the rear obviously enjoying the ride as we are

we stop at sandrivier
1. blazez at sandrivier bridge
2.splash at sandrivier bridge

so,,,weve been dodging and diving the cloudburst all morning,,,the roads are quite dusty and its been a hot day,,,we make towards renken pass which is the most scenic part of our journey,,,i stop before the pass and await blazes for a photo,,,trying to catch him a second time without a motorised camera is futile and i eat dust,,,,also splash i miss as they are eager past me towrds the pass,,,im coughing dust and quickly mount and with in 3 minutes i get hit on the pass by a toilet flush like downpour,,,few minutes ago it was dust and no there is water water everwhere and all the dust did shrink,,,humongous streams are running across the road and i cant see the road in front of me and being on top of the mountain amongs lightning doesnt appeal quite so much to me,,,i flip my visor and kinda feel like im swimming under water with my eyes open and so i managed to get down the pass,,,actually passed acar that had pulled of as well,,,pity i couldnt take a photo but amoings the deluge and thunderous lightning around me i had other plans..

1. blazes  close??
2. blazes past,,,just left me dust
3. after the flashflood back on the plains again

so we made it and the wind and the sun dries us again,,,we stop amongst some game farms filled with eland and rietbok,,,also a jackals scurries across the road
another few kms and we happen upon some white (albino) antelope
ok, i mess up and have to get some petrol after having done 277 kms and its getting dark and their another cloudburst between us and modimole,,,we do tar through the rain again and soon we at our overnite stop "de draai",,,as we dismount splash does a spectacular timber with his bike and onstead of first taking a photo i opt to help him,,,,dammmm

we eventually end up in a  house away from the maun area and its fine,,,we have been rained on twice, we're wet and miserable and we park and start stripping of the wet biker clothing,,,,we make tea and chat and decide we want waffles and cuppaciono's,,,,we quickly dress only to be flushed with water yet again,,,we wait and have another cup of tea,,,,then we see a space in the rain and we mount and ride the 7kms to bele bela to the wimpy,,,,,yet again we get flushed out and luckily we're the only people in the wimpy and we take off all the sopping wet jackets and clothing,,,enjoy our waffles and coffee and then blazes and splash show no culture by opting for pizza across the road than rather support the bulkls at5 o'hagans which i do,,,our paths split asnd much to my dismay my team losses,,,,and the o hagans turned into a sharks supporter den and i had to leave trailing my tail behind me,,,we sleep while our clothes try to get dry and start adopting a swamplike growth and smell,,,

next morning we're up at dawn,,,we feed the bikes oil and chain wax,,get dressed and head towards the wimpy for a breakfast,,,we wait for two guys on a gs1150,,,beeemer man, its those guys you cleaned the bike for,,,it didnt last a week but luckily we'll always remember and have your before and after photos on the web,,,that was before that  gs followed us home through vogelstruis pan area
1.bfast for the bikes of oil and chain wax
2.the tweedle dee twins from jhb on beemer man's newly polished gs
3. splash diverting from gravel to the sand roads,,,,unfortuanately we couldnt reach vogelspan and went home via the sandy way much to our delight and the dismay of the everly brothers(martin and a guy who clenched so tight he cut his finger with his ring)

damm i can get so soapie sometimes but yes i feel a journey( partly on my sore backside and a inch of extra padding on the AT's seat didnt make the difference) in my heart
