Title: WR450 Amageza build - ooo dear...
Post by: Scooterbike on August 05, 2014, 11:35:03 am
I bought this 2008 WR450, early in 2013, so have had it for just more than a year. My first off road bike, maybe a bit of an over kill for a newbi but what the heck, only want to buy once...

I have done some quad bike riding in the past but had no 2wheel experience, but hell this bike was/is WILD!!! I have now done 3000km with this WR, which is the grand total of my 2wheel off road experience, and I am still fighting to control this beast - well a beast in my opinion.

It started out life with me looking like this.

I decided to enter the Namaqua Rally and then this happened to my bike.

The full faring and weight was just too much for me with my little experience, so I removed it.

Got all the bits to get the bike through road worthy. So much fun to ride from my house, 20km tar and then hit the mountain tracks - no more loading the trailer!

Then that scary word 'Amageza' crossed my path, WTF! Is it a bird, is it a plane? It's the race for real men they say... shiver me socks, who's scared!? Lets do it! Have not yet recovered financially from the Namaqua, but hey you only live once!! You can always make more money later.

Now THAT race called... sssshh, Amageza , (not to scare anyone), has got all sorts of rules and regs, and must haves - darn there goes me wallet again!

Got me a used Safari tank for the rear.

Now I can say that I will not be the only one with this setup at the Amageza, and you will soon see more of it on WD.

This weekend I started to strip down the front end of my WR. This HDB kit is really light and easy to install. The kit (excl. lights and RB) is only 2kg.

The kit comes with this really fancy bar clamp. However it required some soldering which I have never done before. You need freaking four hands to join a wire!! But it turned out not to bad.

The kit has a integrated bar clamp for both the nav tower and Scott damper. The bottom end of the tower bolts onto the lower triple. Its like playing with mechano...

The wiring took the longest and required some planning. Phase 1 complete, Rally Lite kit installed, together with all lights for the road. Next will be navigation.

Pulled out the new Trail Tech today. Got bullet cut spacers made this week to mount it on top of the bar clamp. Could not mount the Trail Tech in front of the bar clamp as the front break hose is doing some trampoline action in that space. This actually worked out well,  now space is more optimised. Wired it straight to the battery so that there will never be a power cut due to another device. Installed the temp sensor on the radiator hose, and tapped onto the spark plug power for the rpm gauge. Magnet onto the front disc, with hole drilled in the calliper carrier for the speedo pickup. Sounds simple but took about 4 hours.

Where did you get the black plastic covers on the frame? I am looking for a set for mine, the boots are destroying my frame.

A semi waterproof cover with Velcro would probably do the job? Also add a bit of shock proofing?

I have a magnet attachment for dash mounting of which I want to use two to add the phone to the 990.
Bought them for R85 each at Midas.
Have a cover like this for R500

I am experiencing some weird electrical problem with my WR. During my sunday ride it started loosing power but will quickly recover again, thought it was a jet. But later noticed that all the lights dim when this happens. conclusion is that something is drawing so much power that it severely affects the engine. But it comes and goes...  ???
I have checked all the new wiring but cannot find anything wrong. Any ideas?  :sip:

Will start a process of elimination this weekend - disconnect one at a time and ride...

120w stator
my kit = 60w max incl indicators.

what I don't understand is how this power drain can effect the motor power so badly - cruising in 5th can hardly accelerate.
And it comes and goes, as if a wire is touching somewhere every no and then...
Even when engine is off, and I through the new main switch to the nav tower, everything just dims right down (head lights still off).

I removed the original speedo unit, but cannot see how this will make a difference.

had the same idea, I had to 'unplug' the spark plug when installing the trail tech... but no, the issue is still there when engine is not running.

My 530 maak net so, hy gaan die komende week vir Julian kuier en ander stator kry, hopenlik is dinge dan reg.

Scooterbike, I had exactly the same thing happen to me on my 2009 WR.

Almost feels like a fuel problem the way it affects the bike.

It is the stator for sure, get the biggest stator you can find, because as soon as the battery power drops off it slows down your bike. Some kind of weird feedback which somehow affects the sparkplug. I had an HID light and that was what was affecting mine, along with the fan.

BTW is your old fairing up for grabs? I would be interested. :)
Title: Re: WR450 Amageza build - ooo dear...
Post by: Scooterbike on August 16, 2014, 01:53:32 pm
Charged the battery and now the problem seems to be gone. The battery is probably old so will get a new one.

my other fairing is sold already but it will be doing the amageza.

Hmmm, be careful boet. Make sure that stator is charging 13V or more. I changed the battery on mine but after 200km I ended up with the same problem and nearly went out the rally.

Another unexpected expense I was not planning to do... Tubliss! I saw the logic in not running tubes. Mousse is very expensive /km rate. So its Tubliss then.
At first I was only going to do the front wheel. But then the 2 lovely ladies in the shop got my brain to cloud over and I walked out with front and rear kits  :patch:

Spend all day sunday fitting it in my garage. Back breaking work  :dousing:
 now for some  :ricky:

Tubeliss is great.....just 3 very important rules:

1.  Watch the you-tube tutorial carefully for installation & tyre changes - makes life a lot easier and saves you problems in the long run
2.  Use the correct slyme, the most expensive ones not necessarily the best ones.
3.  CHECK THE INNER TUBE PRESSURE BEFORE EVERY RIDE!!!!!  If that pressure is too low you will destroy the system
