Title: Magaliesberg ride Saturday 08/03 Report.
Post by: blazes on March 09, 2008, 06:11:24 pm
As Splash organized the ride i am not going to hijack it, but just lay a foundation. I was riding with as this is a area i have never ridden in ??? and decided to have some fun and take some photo's as well as just take it easy ;D We all met at the Sasol garage at Pinehaven and left for who knows where ::) I was playing follow the leader. The WD's who came along as far as my selective memory loss allows me to remember were- Splash. Beemer Mike. Cave Girl nice to see her after i last saw her in Clarence( Fly-Fishing week - end) Bok, Malgat , Adventure Boy, Frans West, Uncle, Gunda Gunda our portable Cappuchino machine ::) Man he can ride with any day that coffee stop is worth it. Louwrens DL. and myself. As we left the bgarage it started raining. shit i thought another wet ride ??? Fortunately the sun came out and the weather was perfect ;D Some pic's the rest can be filled in by the WD's who new where we were going. Eh het net saamgery.

Between this section and the puncture Lourens dl had a encounter with mother earth and rocks. Was so tempted to take some photo's ;D But the safety of a rider i feel is more important than a few cheap pictures. Fortunately he was not hurt too bad and and all was Ok. Hope you are not to sore today Lourence. ;) Splash and the PUNCTURE. Well this is a long story and i am not even going to start to tell it ;D Except that KTM have their own road assistance team as shown in the picture sponsored by Yamaha quads ;D By the way the YELLOW bag Cave Girl was carrying on her bike we found out was to pick mielies for the needy ;D

As for Malgat. ??? Take this man with you  and you are guaranteed to get free beer even if it is on the moon. The farmer we met beleived it was his duty to supply the WD's with free beer after Malgat spoke to him ;D. I think i will no longer ride with these WD's as Malgat now blames me for Lourens dl's fall ??? The rest left after the puncture episode --some home and others on another never ending story with Gunda. I had to get home and do the family braai thing with friend's who do not blame me when the cat falls pregnant ;D

Well it certainly was a busy day, and I enjoyed it very much. Thanks to Gunda Gunda for showing me to the starting point, Splash for organizing and everybody else for being great riding buddies. It's great to meet some new faces, and see some old ones again.
Yet again I learned a helluva lot on the ride, especially about repairing punctures. Punctures are not welcome, but seeing Splash and Blazes fix this one will come in handy one day, I know that for sure. (Oh, and thanks to KTM Support Magalies as well. They ride Yamaha!). I did take photies, but those posted already tells the whole tale.
Lourens, glad to see you can still post!
See you all on another day, safe riding untill then.

Uncle

Some pics from the "phase two" ride.

Disclaimer : bit of personal and South African history and totally non-biking stuff to follow:-

I spent the years between my eighth and eighteenth birthdays on a trout farm in the Magaliesburg area, and when I heard from Splash that we would be riding past the farm I could not resist them temptation to do the nostalgia thing and visit.  I spent a few hours on the phone to find out who owned the farm and learned that the farm was sold to a developer last year and is to be developed into an up-market estate. I managed to get hold of the manager who kindly gave permission to visit.

The place is historically interesting. It was owned by a very wealthy Englishman we knew as "Old man" Pratt (I think his name was Beresford) and, with remote help from my late father, who had a Masters in Marine Biology and worked for the Department of Sea Fisheries in Cape Town, set up one of the first trout hatcheries in the country. After the death of "Old Man" Pratt the farm was inherited by his son David, and when we moved up-country he invited us to stay with him on the farm and help with the hatchery.

David Pratt was a strange man, and during the Rand Show in 1960 on a whim he loaded up a .32 pistol, walked into the VIP box and put two bullets into the Prime Minister, HF Verwoerd's head.

Had he used a pistol of larger calibre he would certainly have killed him, but Verwoerd survived to be fatally stabbed in parliament years later by Dimitry Tsafendas.

Pratt was declared mentally unfit to stand trial, was sent to a special prison in Bloem where he later, at least according to prison authorities, committed suicide on his birthday watched by his cell-mate, Diesel, who had murdered his wife and chopped her into little pieces.

I liked Diesel - he used to make us tea when we visited.

In his will he left our family the use of the farm for twenty years, but we stayed on for about ten before handing over the farm to the Pratt estate.

The hatchery has been closed for quite a few years - the flow of the Magalies River, which rises on the farm, has dwindled from 1,2Ml/H to 0,3Ml/H while the water temperature at source has risen from 16 to 18 degC. The Pratt house in which we stayed has been deserted for quite a few years.

It was wierd to visit - sad to see what had happened to the place, but good to hear of the development plans and that the Pratt house it to be renovated.

Pics show the house - as it is now and 35 Years ago, and the hatchery.

Got a bit carried away with "plaasgeskiedenis" and forgot my manners and to thank Splash for another lekker ride, and to thank The Cave Girl, Splash and Malgat for riding with me down memory lane.

Also, Cave Girl got caught by a mini-mud-monster - Hope you not limping too badly today S.

I include a pic of the cookies in Malgat's top-box. I was hungry but I was not going to eat them with a spoon as you never know what had lurked in that top-box before.

So much for the organic cookies that "make you ride faster"  :D

I was on my way early Saturday morning to visit my boet in Stilfontein. When I stopped at the intersection and looked over to the Sasol garage I saw a number of DS bikes starting to gather and I said to my wife that I bet that those were wilddogs.

I should have stopped and said hello  :-\

The clouds were looking pretty ominous and we did get some rain in Krugersdorp, but then it opened up and I suspected that you guys would have a lovely ride. Glad to see it turned out that way.

Thanks for the pictures and reports.

Thanks to all eleven brave riders that ventured out into the west into what looked like was going to be a wet day.

Stories normally have a beginning, middle and end, well this one only really had a beginning and then a pucture. I cannot thank blazes enough for repairing my tire three times. It took two tubes to eventually get going again. A very kind farmer and assistant that not only supplied beers but a spanner that worked (the original bent) and a compressor (saved lots of additional frustration).

Why did this have to happen to me, but I learnt a thing or two - always ride with good friends that are patient enough while one fumbles about (and that carry spare tubes).

I think the farmer was a little harsh in remarking that we would have lost the Dakar rally if we took that long too repair a puncture. I was just happy to get going again.

I have not had any joy in getting any warranty on the spanner and it was suggested that I get a proper one. So much for tools.

We did get to ride some great roads and enjoyed a day in the countyside, even if part of it was under a tree.

Thank you Splash for organising the ride and everybody for a good ride.  It was very nice to meet new people and to be able to put some faces to those names. The WD's are truly a great bunch of people.

Falling or having an encounter with mother earth and rocks as blazes puts it it quite a humbling experience. It brings you back down to ground level very quick!  ;D   Especially in front of ten other riders!   The damage to the XT is minimal but I'm in need of a new left hand mirror.  The damage to my body is also negligible but the dent in my ego is enormous!  ;D   Thanks for your concerns.

Thanks Splash for a great ride :D :D - longest I have ever done on dirt. Malgat thanks for lifting the bike off of me! Gunda for the historic ride and the chance to pick some pom pom weed  ;) Sorry didn't have a camera to take photos of the fall ... I have to learn to control my bike in mud  >:( I was not able to walk yesterday - the ankle was not so bad but I must have twisted the knee somehow - spent the day in bed pissed off that I was missing the white water rafting! Could not bend the knee enough to get into the cage this morning so had to use the bike - only to discover the whole front of the bike is skew..... hopefully not too serious - it did get me home on Saturday (through one hell of a storm) and to work this morning. Gone in to be chekced out.

thanx all you dudes and dudette

lekka ride,,,lekka countryside, lekka bikes,,,lekka lekka lekka,,,i left 6 am and got home 7pm,,,and still had sunday also

what amazes me most is how such glorius rides can be found just alongside the hiway and inbetween the concrete jungle,,,,when i got my bike i thought the only spot close was de wildt and lesotho,,,but right around my doorstep is this endless networks of dirt glorius dirt roads,,,my bike isnt just a bike,,,its a time machine

also meeting these people al with different backgrounds and interests,,,,when i joined the wilddogs it was like marrying into a 1000 new brothers and sisters,,,,wooo hooo,,,im getting kinda gunda gunda here,,,,but its true and i salute you all,,

my take on the ride was:

lekka feeling that nip in the air,,,its comfy and warm to wear attgat,,,,arrive at the satrting point, we get briefed by splash and we're off,,,,2 kms and it starts raining,,,wooo hooo i think,,,mud  glorius mud,,,,

i see franswest brand spanking new katoom and kit and clothing and i think devious plans to spray him with mud,,,i cant wait to deflower the virgin???

and we hit tracks,,,,huge roads one can open up on,,,,i like this kind of riding,,,those you can "wfo" on the throttle and then go into panic when something jumps into the road and wants to snatch your bike or pull you down,,,,like "knypping" all the time and going flat out at the same time,,,lotsa adrenalien,,,

anyway we reached breedts nek and its cuppaciono time and cookies, needless to say i need to buy stronger cookies next time,,,what about those old army dog biscuits,,,,we quickly re adjust cave girls chain tension as it was slapping and had just came from the bike shop,,,,thats nr 1,,,things happen in 3 they say,,,,we then go around rustenburg area around buffelsdam and stop for petrol and food,,,,i end up buying the oiliest chips of my life but then again me and my bike suip oil gladly,,,

we kinda do a wide circle and its time to go back to jhb side,,,where splash get a puncture,,,,problem nr 2, so its foam and pompo and ride,,,,,after about 2 kms its time for problem nr 3 and lourens takes a very gracefull slide over a rocky berm in the corner,,,no real damage, a side mirrorand  some ego mostly as lets face it it isnt lekka ,,,we continue and thats where problem nr 2 pops up again,,,,,again its more foam and we ride like hell to get to a garage,,,franswest, myself and lourens streaking ahead and after 5 kms we noticed nobody is following us,,,we pull over and sit in the shade,,,after 45 min we back track to find they have opened a puncture shop along the way and its spanners and tubes and patch and solution,,,,,

anyway we make some mistakes in repairing the wheel and in the mean time the farmer comes and kuiers with us bringing beers and offering his house for expresso and a party,,,like they say you meet the most amazing people along the road,,,after 3 tubes we are mobile,,,its about 14h00 and some left to get home,,,,

eventually its just 4 of us(splash, cave girl, myself and gunda gunda),,,,we stop for lunch at magaliesburg and follow gunga gunga on his childhood memory trail,,,,they say before you judge a man you need to walk a mile in his boots,,,this we did and what a journey,,,,what amazing chilhood you've had and your stories are vivid and alive and wil live on for eva in my mind as well,,,,thanx for that trip to the farm and it was my privelege to be there,,,seeing the eye of the magalies  river and the ruins of the fish hatchery was remarkable,,,,

gunda gunda, i really think we need to open a new thread of its own about the farm and then please tell the masses about the stories of that farm in africa,,,the eagle that could eventually land, the radio arial episode, large wine cellar, the delft tiles , the huge rooms with fireplaces and heaps of cupboards, the toilet with an outside door, the silo, the donkie, the mine, the fish hatcheries and the eye of the river that runs through it,,

once again i salute you all,,,nice to meet new faces like beemer mike, uncle, and the already faces of the rest,,,cant wait for next weekend

Ja, I think its all blaze's fault.  Most of the day I was cruising lekker thinking to myself "Catch me if you can boys" and then blazes just blazed past in an apparent non-effort way and that can do damage to a persons self esteem. The way he goes through turns as if it is tar is definitely beyond me. He tried to explain but I seem to have a bit of a gap between the practical execution and the theory.  ;D

I rode that little path on the other side again...
Got wedged on the side embankment, haha.
Got going again but no momentum or traction meant I had to turn around.

Damn.
I will take my plastic bike soon just to go see whats on the other side.

No much more I can add to the reports, but to agree with the sentiments on a great ride, Thanks Splash. I tried to map a route out on my GPS and there are plenty more roads in the area to ride, especially if you head a bit south towards Carltonville from Rustenburg.

I got one photo of the backup to the KTM backup.

Mixed emotions? yep - seriously mixed - and strange memories.

That bay window I am standing in in the pic was where David Pratt used to practise his mornng yoga - stark nekkid of course. My mother sent me to call him for breakfast and he is in a head-stand position with folded legs - sort of like an upside-down buddha - and I have to adopt the same pose to deliver the message. My mother comes looking for me to see what happened - musta have looked funny cos her pajama-clad son and nekkid Pratt are both poepol in die lug, and she gets the giggles that won't go 'til after breakfast.

Writing for me is like riding bike or talking rubbish - once I start I dunno how to stop - so don't get me started. Blazes was right when he said "they go on a never-ending story with Gunda".

Few years ago I get this gogga inside of me that says I have to try writing a novel and after two novels of words I was still trying to get it ended - Damn thing ended up trilogy length.
