Title: Wiehann went down ...
Post by: Colyn on March 11, 2008, 03:52:18 pm
As some of you already know my son Wiehann was involved in a altercation with a truck last Wednesday. He sustained some serious damage to his left shoulder, the arm was almost ripped off. After 10 hours in the theater the surgeons managed to save the arm.

The driver made a u-turn on a blind rise and there was no room for escape.

I was super impressed with the efficiency and professional treatment he received from the 911 staff on the scene.

Today he is feeling a lot better and even managed to take a short walk.

I want to thank all of you who sent good wishes and prayed for him. Many prayers must have gone up for him because the arm made a u-turn just at the rim of the dustbin and came back to him.

Here are some images from the ordeal.

Eish! Eina!

Glad he's doing better and kept the arm.

What was the full extent of the injuries and what's the prognosis of his shoulder/arm?

On 7 March I posted this elsewhere.

Today he is more talkative and he has regained some touch sensations in his left hand. The blood flow is good and the appearance of sensation has made me smile.

Thank you all for your support.

Here is a shot of him in happier times ...

Eish! Eina!

Glad he's doing better and kept the arm.

What was the full extent of the injuries and what's the prognosis of his shoulder/arm?

His injuries are ...

Broken Collarbone
Broken Shoulder Blade
Broken Femur
Broken bone in ankle

He did not wear his jacket and I am convinced that would have prevented the severe laceration of his shoulder muscles. What surprised me most was the lack of roasties ... today he told me that the impact threw him high up into the air and he cam down and smacked into the tar and that was it ... no sliding. His helmet has one bad grind spot on the jaw frame and that is all.

He was actually very lucky.

Slowly but surely he is getting more feeling and muscle control in the arm. To me the slightest twitch is huge because I am measuring against the option of the arm in the dustbin.

Well guys ... I cannot tell you how it feels to see your son's blood trickle out onto the tar ... in my mind it is his life trickling away. I just kept on shooting sort of in a daze and did it on semi auto pilot. Good thing I did because the driver filed a brutally skewed report and my shots set that record straight quite rapidly.

Yes ... I did consider re-installing the driver's operating system but sanity prevailed ... I am of no use to my son if I am in jail.

I can only imagine the 2nd worst thing for any parent is to see your child facing/sustaining grave injury with the prospect of losing him (wich is the worst thing).

That day and the past week must have made you a couple of years older...

Hope your son is ok with you posting those pics, Peaches threatened to moer me with her good arm if I posted any of her in ICU, I took no pictures of her at the crash site, but a lot of the scene once she was on her way to hospital.
Good to hear he is going to be ok.
It is vitally important that he start with physio as soon as humanly possible, and stick with it until his arm is ok, his youth is also on his side, he will heal quickly.

For a few moments at the scene I just stared at him and watched the 911 team work on him. Trying to think of a reason NOT to take the shots. Then my instincts took over and I started shooting ... same way I do on the bike ... freehand out of my fist with no looking through the viewfinder. All I thought was if this is the last I see of him I want to have the choice to see it. When I took the shots in ER the nurses all gave me the "evil" eye but I paid them no due. In the ICU the sister frowned too. I want him to see this ... tell him about the emotions at play at the time and smile at his shame ;)

Difference between your Peaches and my Wiehann ... she is you chick and must be obeyed ;) ... he is my son and must listen :)

I am all over him on the physio and he has been told to do the exercises every hour on his own. I was surprised to hear that he went for a short walk this morning. He also has the added motivation that he can only get out of hospital once he is properly mobile.

My wife just came back from visiting him. She loaded him into a wheelchair and took him outside for a while then she washed his hair and the fisio gave the arm a long and good massage.

She says he is in good spirit now.

Thanks for the support.

Hi Colyn,
Sorry to hear about your son!!! I know the feeling having had to watch my Daughter undergo 15 ops and very nearly loose her leg when she had her bike accident so really glad for you that all is turning out okay!
One of the things that helped her and something I swear by now that I have started studying herbs is if you can get your hands on it a Comfrey plant or 2 - pretty plant in the garden - you can usually find it at most nuseries. If not let me know I can courier you up a plant or two. - Take note of the warning off the website http://www.miraclecomfrey.net/comfrey.html re the correct Comfrey to use.
I have found a commercial comfrey rub at our local chemist - again let me know and will be happy to send some if you can't find it.
A few leaves in hot (not boiling water) and let him drink the "tea" not a pleasent taste but worth it in the long run, your wife will know how to make a poultice from the fresh leaves to put on the wounds until he can soak in a bath.

Sharron

Some infor off the net:
Comfrey has been used since the sixteenth century in the external treatment of broken bones.  It therefore got the name ‚??knit-bone‚?Ě.   Allantoin, the active ingredient, with exceptional healing properties, is absorbed  fast and deep into the skin.   This is the reason why it could assist with the healing of bones and why even external application can bring relief and assist with the healing of internal ailments, such as ruptures, muscle injuries, bruises and the inflammation of arthritic joints, etc.  Being a proliferant, the healing process is speeded up because of rapid growth of new cells. Ironically, Alllantoin is now  being synthesized in the modern pharmaceutical industry.

Medicinal value

Comfrey has a wide range of medicinal benefits, both internal and external. Its actions are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anodyne (lessens pain), astringent (shrinks soft tissue and contracts blood vessels, thus checking  blood flow), demulcent (softens), expectorant, expels  mucous, emollient (softens), haemostatic (stops bleeding), proliferant (stimulates cell growth), refrigerant (cooling effect), mild sedative and vulnerary (healing).
Nutritional information

Comfrey‚??s high nutrient content makes it an excellent tonic.  Comfrey contains 18 amino acids!  It is rich in protein, vitamin C, A and B12.  (There are only two plants containing vit. B12 in the whole plant kingdom.  One is Lucerne (Alfalfa) and the other is Comfrey!)

Comfrey also contains the other B-complex vitamins.

Comfrey is also rich in fibre and minerals, such as calcium, potassium, phosphorus and iron.  Other minerals that are present are magnesium, sulphur, copper, zinc, selenium and germanium.
A different site:
  Comfrey, the miracle herb.

Looking at the multitude of uses of the Comfrey plant, one realizes that this is indeed an extraordinary plant, a real miracle herb!

History of the Plant:

Comfrey has been used since the sixteenth century in the external treatment of broken bones.  It therefore got the name ‚??knit-bone‚?Ě.   Allantoin, the active ingredient, with exceptional healing properties, is absorbed  fast and deep into the skin.   This is the reason why it can assist with the healing of bones and why even external application can bring relief and assist with the healing of internal ailments, such as ruptures, muscle injuries, bruises and the inflammation of arthritic joints, etc.  Being a proliferant, the healing process is sped up because of rapid growth of new cells. Ironically, Allantoin is now  being synthesized in the modern pharmaceutical industry.

Medicinal value

Comfrey has a wide range of medicinal benefits, both internal and external. Its actions are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anodyne (lessens pain), astringent (shrinks soft tissue and contracts blood vessels, thus checking  blood flow), demulcent (softens), expectorant (expels mucous), emollient (softens), haemostatic (stops bleeding), proliferant (stimulates cell growth), refrigerant (cooling effect), mild sedative and vulnerary (healing).

The dried leaves can be used for almost any internal ailment.  It is especially good for any lung ailments and is also a good expectorant.  It also is used for almost all the problems in the digestive tract, even stomach ulcers!  How many herbs can be used for both constipation and diarrhoea?!  Comfrey acts as a natural laxative and the mucilage, a gum-based substance relieves diarrhoea.  Mucilage also helps with the digestion of food, which is of great benefit to people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. All kinds of ulcers benefit from Comfrey‚??s exceptional healing powers. Comfrey is very beneficial to diabetics.  Mucilage delays the emptying of the stomach and reduces after-meal peaks of glucose and insulin.  It also helps to remove cholesterol, and the high nutrient content makes one feel a whole lot better.

Natural antitoxin and parasite treatment
Mozambicans use Comfrey tea in the treatment of malaria, as many of them have no access to medical facilities.  In South Africa there is a documented case of a poisonous spider bite (Black Widow), where Comfrey worked as an antitoxin in three days' time.  Living on a farm, I have dealt with tick fever quite a few times and therefore know the symptoms.  My 15-year-old dog showed all the signs of tick fever. With the nearest vet an hour‚??s drive away, I started giving her strong Comfrey tea right away.  She showed improvement so soon, that I decided to proceed with the treatment and skip the vet, as long as her condition kept on improving.  After two days I couldn‚??t believe the improvement and by the third day she had recovered almost completely.  On the fourth day she was a perfectly healthy dog without any medication or expensive veterinary bills!

Food supplement

Comfrey‚??s high nutrient content makes it an excellent tonic.  Comfrey contains 18 amino acids!  It is rich in protein, vitamin C, A and B12.  (There are only two plants containing vit. B12 in the whole plant kingdom.  One is Lucerne (Alfalfa) and the other is Comfrey!)

Comfrey also contains the other B-complex vitamins.

Comfrey is rich in mucilaginous fibre and minerals, such as calcium, potassium, phosphorus and iron.  Other minerals that are present are magnesium, sulphur, copper, zinc, selenium and germanium.

Indeed a miracle herb!
If one takes note of all the above-mentioned information, one comes to the conclusion that this plant is indeed a God given miracle herb!

 Warning

Very few people know that there are four kinds of Comfrey and that two of them contain toxic alkaloids.  Russian Comfrey (s. uplandicum) contains high levels of toxic alkaloids that can cause liver damage.  Excessive intake has led to deaths in Canada, which caused the tea to be banned there.  In South Africa, Symphytum Officinale (common Comfrey) is easily mistaken for prickly Comfrey (s. asperum).  Prickly Comfrey also contains toxic alkaloids, but not as much as Russian Comfrey.  Be very careful not to use Comfrey from your garden if you are not sure that it is Symphytum Officinale.  Only experts can distinguish between the different kinds because Prickly Comfrey and Common Comfrey looks almost the same.  Two different tests carried out abroad showed that dried Common Comfrey leaves do not contain toxic alkaloids.

Hey Colyn - sad to read this, but glad to hear Wiehan is on the mend

Wake up calls are sometimes necessary in ones life - although we battle to understand why.
As a student I rode an XJ900 and my boet an XJ750. We were wild, I would not say reckless, but there was a wild streak
Through no fault of his own he was killed in an accident on that bike and our lives were placed in turmoil

Just two years ago I had a major prang and pretty much got a lot of steel in my ankle.

So, heal well Wiehan - read this and be glad you are alive - your fault or NOT

Stength to you Colyn and family

UPDATE:

The day is starting on a bad note ... the boy is vehemently against any form of medication basically all his life and that has led to him be very sensitive to medication ... one Panado is enough for a severe headache. Now things are not good for him ... they are medicating him with heavy artillery and it is disturbing his stomach in a big way. He is puking his lungs out and is feeling really horrible.

I am torn between the issues ... on the one hand he needs some medication but on the other hand this is like poison to him.

I just wish nursing staff and doctors want to take the time and just LISTEN when a patient wants to tell them how he feels.

Thank you all for your support and good wishes.

My thoughts are with you and your family.  Serious injury to a child is one of the more frightening things to deal with and Colyn, you're doing it well.  Every day gets a bit easier, take it hour by hour.

Some years ago I had a head on with a U turner on my old Honda 250, luckily lifted my legs and flew over everything and was right outside a hospital, straight onto a wheelchair and in.  No serious injuries. I will not commute by bike. I'm reluctant to even ride a bicycle with the traffic.  Know too many people who've been hammered by cars, taxi's, trucks etc.

Colyn, just saw the thread, first thought it's about Eisbein then saw it's your son you wrote about in the mag.  What a bummer, can just try to imagine the anguish after that call.  Thank God the oke is relatively okay and alive.  Best friend of mine in Windhoek lost his son in bike accident, he tried to explain the sadness, the man took a serious knock.  Maybe I should thank my ex for her absolute NO to a bike for my son, one less worry for me and I don't get the blame of withholding the pleasure of biking from him  >:D
Keep well and tell Wiehann to hang in there and get better asap.

RANT:

Last week this time we were in knots waiting to see him come out of the theater. Up to this point everybody involved ... ER9111 Emergency crew, ER Staff and the two surgeons did what seemed impossible and we thank them for their commitment and professionalism.

The two days in ICU he was cared for well by highly trained staff but then things started slipping ... from the moment he was transferred to the ward things progressively went South. The boy's resilience and fighting spirit kept on surprising us and everyday their was progress. However ... his medical care by the nursing staff was nothing to be excited with. Fortunately my wife is extremely highly qualified and has a shoulder full of tags to proof it. She stepped in and started doing basic nursing care like getting his bowels to go, washing his hair, brushing his teeth ... cleaning his ears and nose and massaging his back and buttocks. All things that should be standard and basic nursing functions ... all aimed at keeping a patient comfortable.

Well yesterday morning she was called to Wiehann's doctor's rooms and got a scolding for interfering with the staff functions. Needless to say that by the grace of God I was not with her or that man would have been eating his own marrow. She was very upset when she git to Wiehann's room and he could see it. She told him what happened and he said ...

"Mom ... how do I get out of this place ?"

"Well ... they will only let you go if you are mobile." was all she could say.

Now this should make some goosebumps jump up in some that reads this ... it did for me when I saw it happen. By 14h00 the last blood transfusion lines were removed and all pipes and drains were already out. He gritted his teeth and got up onto the side of the bed. Took a crutch ... grunted and stood up and started walking out of the room ... down the passage to the nursing station ... gave them a wink and hobbled back to his room.

"Is that mobile enough ?"

Well the physio could not believe it and then last night around midnight he walked out of the hospital to the front parking area and when the security asked where he was going ... he said ... "I need some fresh air."

Well this morning the physio and occupational therapist did their sessions and reported to his doctor who then said he can go home. That was 11h00 ... my wife waited there till 18h45 for the doctor to come sign him out and was then told he went home. The nurse on duty "forgot" to take the discharge forms to him to sign.

Well I had to talk long and hard to the boy to calm him down.

These private hospitals are no longer care institutions but business entities and with the dillapidation of State Health we are at the mercy of these sharks. Gone are the days when nursing was a labour of love ... what really piss me off is that I will not see any discounts for services NOT rendered.

So ... hopefully he will be discharged early tomorrow morning or I may be in jail by midday.

END OF RANT.

Thank you all for your support and prayers.

PS ... It was a great moment when I sat in the cafeteria garden at exactly 12h30 and looked up and saw him hobbling through the door ... one week to the minute since he was pushed of to the theater. :)

Praise God ... he was good to us.

hehehehehe, Colyn, having had minor surgery myself recently (still walking around with 4 stitches in my back), let me prepare you for another "surprise" down the line.

By the time I got back home from surgery, the clinic had already submitted their claim to my medical aid :o Pre-approved an all & all - Surprise, small print somewhere - for your own account = $$$$ ;D

Great that Wiehann's going home today!!!!

Glad to hear he is "mobile" and determined to stay so... that is 90% of the fight won already.
It does seem these place want to stretch your stay as well... I had a moer of a fight to get home as well... "Your drainage must be clear for 24 hours" but they forgot to check it and wanted me to stay another day... "I said how do you take this thing out? because I am going to do so myself if you do not! My drain has been clear for two days moron!"
Lets just say no nurses got any tips... :-)

If I was you I would tell them to charge his last night in hospital to that ignoramus doctor, explain to your medical aid what happened, let THEM tell the hospital to piss off.
Ask that doctor why he has a 'Practice', the rest of us don't practice, we KNOW what we are doing..... >:D >:D

My notes on the last seven days :

1. I heard a father on the phone with a sense of urgency and alarm in his voice that I have never heard before when he told me that his son was in an accident.

2. I saw a father's face when he saw his son lying in the middle of the road in a pool of blood.

3. I head a father say that he must now and tell his wife that their son was in a huge accident.

4. I saw a father on the edge of freeking out but keeping cool to support his wife.

5. I saw a father's face after the surgeon told him that the chances of saving his son's arm was very slim.

6. I saw a mother, with here face saying, " I would have taken his place on that table, if I could"

7 I heard the relief in a father's voice when he told me that after a 10 hour operation his son was stable in the ICU.

8 I saw a father's relief when his son walked into the coffee shop yesterday.

9. I saw a father's smile when his son walked into his house this morning.

10. I saw a mother and father's recognition of the Grace of God.

PS: Just keep believing. I nearly lost my arm in 1992. IT was an open reduction just below the elbow..It happened in Phalaborwa. The  Phalaborwa doctors wanted to amputate, but luckily I was transferred to Pietersburg where a doctor managed in a 6-hour operation to save the arm. I believe that the only thing that saved me was the prayers from friends and family.

Hey Colyn
I'm glad to see your son saved by grace. :angel9:

With my 4week stay in hospital my wife got the same "don't interfere here" talk :argue: but luckily for me the Physician was a personal friend of mine and told her to get as involved as she could. :help:

A message to all that might experience a loved one on hospital these days, visiting hours are for other family but you need to be there if the injuries have any chance of an infection!!!! :director:

Ok Wiehann suffered a bit of a setback. On Wednesday he completed the Antibiotics and by Friday night his knee was badly swollen. On Saturday my wife took him to the ER and the doctor decided op the knee up again. He was running a high fever and his blood pressure was sky high.

They operated late yeaterday afternoon and fitted a drain to his knee. He is now receiving antibiotics IV.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

It has been a while since I posted some shots. It is now almost one month since the accident and both me and my wife are showing signs of stress. The current relapse came unexpected and my wife is very upset.

On the 21 of March Wiehann asked me to make some Chicken wings for him. This is one of his favorites and one of my specialties.

The following shots was taken during the evening.

Saturday the 29th of March was a shit day for us. He developed a severe infection in his knee, his temp shot up to 40 C and his blood pressure jumped to 190/140. My wife freaked out.

She took him to the ER and he was promptly admitted. Later in the day ... around 18h30 he went into theater to get the knee drained.

It is now almost 8 weeks since the accident. During these weeks there were some good days and some bad days. In general Wiehann is healing physically quite fast but he is frustrated with the slow pace of healing of the nerve damage.

I have switched modes and treats him "normally". In my mind he is now faced with the cold reality of his situation and life goes on. He needs to learn to function with whatever handicap he has and concentrate on doing what needs to be done to try and regain as much as possible function back.

So, I am not a very popular guy with the mother. The coldest and most cruel fact to accept by all parties is that it was his own two hands that were on the handlebars that morning and I am not going to take any blame for what happened to him. He is a very experienced rider and whatever the stupid driver of the truck did does not make me liable. I am sure many of you that went through similiar situations can understand the human interactions in this situation.

Here is a series of shots taken during the past few weeks. Every shot is dated and this is the last shots that will be published as "Crash" pictures ... life goes on.

Colyn, never met you before, but can only judge by the quality of your postings on your thread here, and the photographs you have taken and posted.

You sir, are golden in my books. What a flipping awesome father you are. Youre care and love is hugely evident, and I can tell you that your boy is lucky to have a pops like you. My hat goes off to you....

Wiehann looks like a good kid... the smiles, the scars, the bike (nice colour!), the girls  >:D, the antics - what a boytjie. I'd like to meet with you sometime when I am in the area - you guys have come through a big ordeal. Strength to you for the rest of the road ahead, and bloody hell I hope that #(#*$ driver who made the Uturn has come with hat in hand to see how your boy is doing... at a flipping minimum.

Keep us posted. After being very close to 3 accidents in 3 weekends running (concussion 1, dislocated pelvis 2, dislocated shoulder 3), this sort of thing gets you in the gut. Sterkte ou maat.

Lito you have really touched my sole ... thanks for your kind words.

Well today I have some good news to share ... Wiehann is busy regaining some motor function in his biceps and triceps ... I think the fact that I sold his bike two weeks ago has kick started his muscles ;)

Three weeks ago I decided to sell his Dakar because the recovery rate was really slow and there was no chance of him riding again soon. He got onto my LT wit bike on the center stand and took the handles ... telling me that he can hold it ... well needless to say .. a slight sudden jerk of the right hand bar by me and he lost his grip on the left.

He went with me when I collected my GS and he was really depressed. This morning he got onto the GS and called me.

"I want to show you something ..." he had a broad smile on hs face and had the handles in his hands. I tried the same maneuver and to my surprise there was real resistance.

He then proceeded to show me some of the exercises he has been doing the last week. I asked him why he kept it to himself and he answered ...

"I wanted the physio to check and confirm that it i snot my imagination."

Well guys and girls I thank you all for the prayers and good wishes that went up for him. I am going to have a great weekend ... same to you all.

Great news, excellent progress!

Keep it up and keep up the support Colyn. I notice the Wiehan has a "Targon nail" in his femur. l had my nail removed 8 months ago, and I am pleased to be metal-free!!!! :D This was the result of a hectic car prang that almost killed me....

God speed!

Good to hear, Colyn, when you come home one day and your GS is missing from the garage, you'll know who's got it.... ;D
And then it will be another visit to BMW Bethlehem. :thumleft:
