Title: SCOOP - Operator's new toy
Post by: Watty on March 14, 2008, 11:57:16 am
SCOOP  - today, at 09h30, Operator took possession of his new toy, a Suzuki Djebel 250XC.   A moment of joy as Operator already secured this particular bike at the start of January and had to wait patiently for its delivery from Japan.

After jetting in from Cape Town he arrived at the bike shop, did the necessary paperwork, jumped into his AGATT, and  immediately got acquainted with his new mistress.  Barton of Track & Tar Motorcycles quickly pointed out the relevant levels and knobs and Operator fired-up the Djebel.  After leading him to the nearest petrol station and escorting him to the N2, I bit him farewell with some envy as I had to rush back to work before the MD noticed my absence.  Then the long trip to the Western Cape started in perfect weather conditions.
So, any other dawgs travelling between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, be on the lookout for Operator and his new scoot!

(http://www.freesmileys.org/emo/happy112.gif) Congradulations,  not only on getting a new ride, but for selecting my ride's twin, I am sure you will not be disappointed.

To continue with the Ride Report Watty started:

While Operator was making his way West from PE, I set off from George to meet him at the Oyster Catcher in Knysna. Detourer was also going to be there to hand over Firebucket who will travel with Operator to Cape Town.

When I got there Detourer was already waiting with a cold one ;D

What a view:

Before long Operator pulled up on his brand new Vuka Scuta ;D ;D ;D

Naaaah. He's got a very clean Suzuki 250 ;)

Welcome to the brotherhood :occasion14:

After a HOT lunch  :cherry: (thanks Detourer :thumleft:) we set off for the seven passes and Operator's first dirt of the trip.

By the time we reached the Saasveld road the first drops of rain started to fall.

We had a nice braai last night and talked the evening away.

This morning it was raining hard. :-\ Operator got a rain suit from the local Agri co-op (ala Rooipoot ;D) and suited up just after lunch.

And in the pouring rain he set off to Swellendam.

I met Operator in Heidelberg at 4 and we rode to Swellies together. Didn't take much photos because we were pressed for time. Here's some pics from today.
First was taken between Heidelberg and Strawberry Hill. Second was taken from Strawberry hill when we had to stop to admire the sun rays through the clouds.

I arrived safely at home.

Not really fatigued or suffering from "iron butt sindrome", because I do a lot of cycling and have a but as hard as steel.
I do suffer from something that I might call "throttle fatigue sindrome!"
My right hand is a so numb, that my fingers are totally useless. I'm able to just pick up a glass, but I cant even use a knife to cut a piece of meat, that I had for a late lunch.
I'm sure I will be OK in the morning.

Trailrider, thanks for the accomodation and friendship on Friday night.
The 7 passes ride was awesome and will stay with me forever.
( I will be back for more adventures in the Southern Cape soon...... ;) )
Your in-ride pictures made me look really glamorous.............and it started a trend, cause Uiltjie had to get in on the act too.

Watty thanks for the sourcing of this bike and the organizing of the whole deal.
Much appreciated........your input was great.  ;)
Watty, I just made a joke.............I promise you, I'm not angry about the captions on the photos. It was great and added a lot of humour to this thread.
Your a star!!   ;)

Bliknêrs thank for you accommodation and friendship on Saturday evening.
The ride from Heidelberg to Swellendam on the "alternative route" was also awesome.
I was always wondering about that route, but no I'm not wondering any more........been there, done that! ;)

Uiltjie....thanks for meeting me outside Caledon. That coffee and cappuccinos was way quite OK for a countryside town. The ride along was just the best.
Your in-ride shots made me look like a superstar !! ::)
While me and Uiltjie had breakfast.....we also had some visitors from the area that made a hostile attack on the coffee shop
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2339/2338101278_b7a970f1b0_o.jpg)

I took the backroads from Caledon and came home via Theewaterskloof dam and the Franschhoek pass.

The total amount  travelled was 865 kilometers.
Enough kilometers to make me realized that the bike was a good buy and was mechanically sound.
I did a lot of research and talked to a lot of people......and I thought that this bike is exactly what will fullfill my needs.....(that is the theory!)

Today I know I made the correct choice and that this bike fulfilled all my preconceived ideas! ( this is practise!)
So in theory and practice I'm happy. ;)

At first I felt a bit intimidated by the little beast, because I was out of practice, but today I can say we have found each other....

Sorry Jacko, but this is a Mine-me moment............   This bike is my Mini-me!
It completes me !  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Superjuice....... thanks for the jacket!
(Why do I thank you? ............I had to pay you for it!!!   ..........It was not a pay-kit-forward-gesture!!  ;)  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
It was tested in extreme conditions on this trip.
It was not a bad buy and I am a satisfied customer.........
(any other stuff you wanna sell ?  ;)  :D :D :D :D :D

One of my favourite moments on this trip was the view me and Bliknêrs had when we saw this picture.
Unfornately we only had cellphone cameras... but the view made the detour all worthwhile. This moment was the best view of the whole trip. Beautiful !!

I was riding in heavy rain in George on Saturday. I had one of those cheap yellow rainsuits on over all the clothing, so I cant really say it was tested to the limit, but whatever exposure it had.........I never got wet!

Great little report and excellent to see the network helping you to make home safetly.

That's a great bike. I've had te pleasure to ride one through some fairly technical stuff through the Grabouw forest region and it's excellent. Take a good look at where the airbox is as it's easy to drown the bike if you drop it on the left.

Hope you have many happy miles.
Cheers

Lawrence

I am trying to do some work in a field I have little experience in, to pay the medical bills.  I had to meet a serious dead line. But hey, next time I will make a plan, and if you give me some notice  I will definitely be there.

Ja I also thought it was special. I've known Operator for almost 20 years and was over the moon when he told me he's getting the bike and riding it down. And I got to see and hold the fire bucket!
My original plan was to meet Operator at Albertinia or Riversdale.
Then I got called out to Bredasdorp area Saturday morning.
Then the rain in George delayed Operator in George and I was glad because maybe I could still meet him somewhere.
I only left Bredasdorp 2 o'clock and was outside cell coverage until 3. The roads are pretty bad and I got to Heidelberg about 5 o'clock after picking the kids up at a friends farm where I dropped them Sat morning, taking them home, swoping the car for the bike and hauled ass up the N2 (in matter of speaking)!
Then a quick ride Heidelberg - Swellendam along the way we took the famous pic where the sun rays shines more on the 650 than the 250 (or is it just me?)
Here's a pic of where we spent Sat night drinking red wine and talking sense!
Then Sunday morning it was our monthly trek to Malgas (church) so we had to leave early again and I couldn't ride with him to Riviersonderend and maybe even meet Uiltjie.
All this means they'll just have to come back sometime soon!
