When the National bash was announced to be held in the Kalahari we jumped at the opportunity to attend this one as the Kalahari is one of our favourite places to visit. We were lucky to get our leave approved over that period and beyond for a day or two.
We decided to attend the bash with the Karretjie instead of the S10. The reason for this was that we are planning a lengthy trip to Namibia during 2015 with the Karretjie and needed to test it properly before the Nam trip. In doing so we would give her a proper test run.
We had more or less a route to the bash but the route back from the bash was to be as we felt and according to the time to our disposal. Our plan for the route was roughly from King William’s Town to Adeliade, over the Winterberg to Tarkastad on to Hofmeyer, Steynsburg, Colesberg, Petrusville and end the days trip at Van Der Kloof dam where we would camp.
The following day’s route would be to Orania, Hopetown, Douglas, Campbell, Kuruman, Hotazel and eventually Van Zylsrus for a camping spot there somewhere.
The 3rd day would be a short ride from Van Zyls to Molopo. Instead of the straight route to Ashkam, we would take the track along the Botswana border to Molopo.
The 1st 4 days’ photos are not of the best quality as the camera was on an e-mail low pixels setting and we only discovered it later on in the trip.
DAY 1 – KING TO VAN DER KLOOF DAM
The day arrived and we were as usual ready for the road at first light. The rain gods however had other plans, but we were not deterred by the rain and still left just after 7. The rain was pouring at times, so smoke breaks were kept to the minimum. We briefly stopped in Adelaide at the butchery to purchase some boerewors. While being served, the owner chatted to me and enquired about our route. I told him we are heading for Tarka and eventually the Kalahari. He warned me not to take the Winterberg road over the mountain to Tarka. He struggled with the same road and got a couple of times stuck over the weekend, that nogal with a 4X4.
We slightly deviated from our planned route via the black stuff to Cradock and eventually on our planned route.
Ready for the road.

Once we passed Cradock we had one last burst of rain and then the clouds made space for some beautiful blue skies.

The first gravel road for the day between Steynsburg and Colesberg. The gravel road was like a highway and without much to see, the distance to our destination for the day shrinked quite considerably.

Somewhere on the road we stopped for a boerewors braai. Our self inflated mattresses is also used as seats for the Karretjie and got a bit damp from the rain in the morning. We hanged them to dry while we braaied.

From here is was a non event and we arrived fairly early at Van Der Kloof dam, only to find out that they had no camping or other accommodation available due to renovations being done. We luckily managed to secure accommodation in a nearby self catering unit at a reasonable prize.

DAY 2 – VAN DER KLOOF DAM TO VAN ZYLSRUS
We had a good night’s sleep, woke up early and left. The day looked promising with clear blue skies and a slight wind from the south.
Leaving Van Der Kloof

We passed Orania on our way.

Just outside Hopetown we were back on gravel towards Douglas. The gravel road was as the previous days gravel in good condition.

The gravel roads started to deteriorate the further north we travelled. Corrugations were the order of the day.

The road was long and boring and wifey took over while I had my smoke brakes.

We briefly stopped in Kuruman for something to bite and left on the boring tar road to Hotazel.
A lot of mining is taking place in this area and you encounter plenty trucks on this road.
(http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n527/11lnroux/Bash%202/P1240208_zpsc60aa830.jpg) (http://s1138.photobucket.com/user/11lnroux/media/Bash%202/P1240208_zpsc60aa830.jpg.html)
A few kilometres north of Hatazel you turn off onto the R31 and leave all the busy traffic behind you. This road is also tar until some 20 kays before Van Zyls. This is where the sports start.
On the R31

The friendly barman advised a nice little rustic camp 20 kays up the road. We stocked up with some ice. They had no meat on sale, and we left for our overnight spot.
This little 20km stretch was badly corrugated and had some deep sand bits.

24km later we arrived at this little gem called the Bush Camp. They have camping spots in the dunes with a toilet, water and a shower, hot water via a donkey. Wood is supplied. No electricity though, but that is not a problem for us.

Van Zyls did not have any meat, but luckily we still had enough boerewors left. We made a wors potjie with some onions and macaroni that I bought in Van Zyls.

DAY 3 - BUSH CAMP TO MOLOPO LODGE
We waited for this day a long time. Today’s route was planned for quite a while and we couldn’t wait to see what was waiting for us. From the Bush Camp, 4km’s on the road to Askham you get a turnoff to your right. From here it is roughly 160km’s all along the Botswana border to Molopo lodge. You will get something of everything on this road / track, from corrugations, sand, tweespoor, some rocky pieces and also smooth hard surface stretches. Here are also a couple of gates that need to be opened and closed. My GPS indicate it as the Moplopo 4X4 route with no road number, it only shows “unpaved road”. It is definitely not only a 4X4 track. A vehicle with enough ground clearance with the right tyre pressure will do this road with ease.
After one of my best nights sleeping in the Kalahari under the stars we got up and prepared for the day ahead. Starting a fire and boiling some water for the morning coffee.

At one spot we got a lekka tweespoor with a high middelmannetjie. I was doing around 80km/h and we ploughed through the middelmannetjie. My wife was not happy, she had sand all over her.

The last 30 odds kays before Molopo lodge the road opens up. Nannie was videoing with the camera when she saw a snake on the side of the road. Here is a snapshot of the mamba, also known as a “geelslang” in these parts of the world, crossing the road. Look on the right of the snapshot.

This short route was worth the wait. We enjoyed it tremendously and it gave me a good idée of what the Karretjie is capable of.
We arrived quite early at the bash, booked in and unpacked. We chilled the rest of the day, greeting old friends and meeting new ones.

Bliksem!
Dalk moet ek ook n sidecar kry vir my bike, dan sal my vrou weer begin saamry.
My hart trek altyd n punt soontoe as ek fotos van rooi duine sien.

Baie nice. Kan nie wag vir die res nie.
Dink daardie sand vreet aan 'n man se fiksheid ;)
-
Ek is so Julie maand daardeur en kan nie onthou dat daar so baie diksand en sinkplaat was nie.Miskien oor ek in die oggend daardeur was. Verbasend hoe
pad toestande in daardie wereld verander binne 3 maande.
Ek sien julle is soos ek by die 2de afdraai noord na Molopo tweespoor toe. Hierdie pic lyk vir my bekend.

Heerlike pad. :eek7:

DAY 5 – MOLOPO LODGE TO RIEMVASMAAK
We had no planned route for our trip back. We were thinking to sleep the night at Verneukpan, but Drazil mentioned at the bash that they might go to Riemvasmaak. This was a great opportunity for us to visit the place. We left Molopo just after 7 and took the tar to Upington. I needed to get some 10mm bolts and nuts to secure the sidecars mudguard.

DAY 6 – RIEMVASMAAK TO RICHMOND
With no plan on a route back we decided to see how far we would get today, trying to travel on as many gravel as possible. We managed to reach Richmond, 90% gravel and some 700km’s down South. Our route for the day was from Riemvasmaak to Kakamas, Kenhardt, Van Wyksvlei, Vosburg, Victoria West and eventually Richmond.
Leaving Riemvasmaak early morning.
Once again I will let the pictures tell the story.

In Kenhardt we grabbed something to eat and were on the road again to Van Wyksvlei.
These roads are long and boring, hardly anything to see. Mountains are also far and few in between.

We briefly stopped in Van Wyksvlei to stock up on water and left as quickly as possible. This little town with all the dronkies and beggars just don’t do it for me. I hate travelling through this town.
On route to Vosburg.
(http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n527/11lnroux/Bash%206/P1260243_zpsf85c8d8b.jpg) (http://s1138.photobucket.com/user/11lnroux/media/Bash%206/P1260243_zpsf85c8d8b.jpg.html)
We reached Vosburg between 1 and 2 and entered a ghost town, no one in sight.

And then we felt like a bit of adventure and climbed onto the N1 towards Richmond.
On this short little piece to Richmond we encountered 2 stop and goes.

We ended the day staying in another self catering apartment. A lekka potjie and some cold ones rounded the day’s events up.

Hy sal uiteindelik saamwerk, glo my. Hy het mos nie 'n ma of 'n pa nie :eek7: :patch:

DAY 6 – RICHMOND TO KING WILLIAM’S TOWN
A quick glance at the map showed a gravel road from Richmond to Middelburg. A phone call to JMOL and our route from Middelburg to Cradock was sorted via some gravel back roads with a mix of good gravel highways to a tweespoor through some farm gates. From Cradock the plan was to head straight for home via the tar.
We left once again early straight into the upcoming sun.
Leaving Richmond

Between Middelburg and Cradock we took the turnoff to Tafelberg.
Passing an old church.

We saw 3 young kudus, stopped and took some photos.
(http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n527/11lnroux/Bash%207/P1260525_zpsc0a6ad4b.jpg) (http://s1138.photobucket.com/user/11lnroux/media/Bash%207/P1260525_zpsc0a6ad4b.jpg.html)
They turned around and jumped the fence, one did not jump but instead, it went straight through the fence. In the process his one front leg got stuck in die fence. I jumped of the bike and ran towards to kudu to free it from the fence. As I got to him I reached out towards him to free the poor animal. I think he got such a fright that he gave one jerk and freed himself. He stood up, looked me briefly in the eyes and disappeared into the bushes. Nannie managed to capture some of it on video, I will post it later.
Here I rush towards the kudu.

We stopped in Cradock for a bite at the Wimpy. There and then we decided to take a detour via the Swaershoekpas, instead of straight home on tar.
On our way up Swaershoekpas.

From here it was back on tar for the last 150km to King.
We arrived safely home with great memories. This was one of our best short trips. We got to see and do so much in such a short time.
The Karretjie behaved well and passed the test with flying colours.
Thanks to all for the arrangements of the National Bash. It was good to see old friends there and to meet new ones.
Travel safe

As julle daar wil oorslaap stel ek voor julle boek vooraf. Daar is nie baie verblyf beskikbaar nie.

Dankie Arende. I live at the sea and it is raining today and the world you brought into my living room is so far removed from what I am experiencing now. Thank you for an inspiring trip from inspirational people! Will be back in SA in Dec.

I’ve been following your report and found the photos and particularly the videos really great. I really got the feeling that I was riding along with you which in my present condition, was nice. The views of the roads and the scenery is an encouragement for me to come back and explore South Africa.
I’m really interested in your outfit. If you have written about it, I would love to get a reference so that i could read it. I think a sidecar outfit is the way I might be going in the future and would love to see how other people have set up theres.
Thanks again for a great RR and I hope one day i have the opportunity to meet up with you. :)
