Title: Advice needed
Post by: Novice on June 18, 2006, 07:43:25 pm
Hi there,

Maverick recommended that I post my questions here.

I am on a work trip to Jo'Burg until September and will be staying in town every other weekend or more.

Wonder if you can offer some advice on the following:
1. General tourist things to do over a weekend. The project I am on is pretty intense, so won't be able to sneak out early on Fridays. So I only have Saturday and Sunday (inc .. travel time), and possibly only one day out of the two on some weekends.

2. Biking things. I ride a GS back home.
Where can I hire a bike and where can I go to ride it? (Doesn't have to be restricted to Jo'burg .. I hear Cape Town is really nice)
I see BMW SA has one day off road courses, are these any good?
(note: I was at Ranburg Waterfront on saturday and saw quite a few bikes inc a yellow GS :D)

3. Is it worth renting a car? It seems that if you have no wheels (2 or 4), you are pretty much stuck in Jo'burg. Is it easy to find your way round the city?

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Welcome Novice.

Guys here will give excellent pointers.

Have a look at "Interesting Places" on the main board.

Cradle of Human Kind is a nice thing to do. Half day outing. Near Krugersdorp which is in Gauteng. Not to far from Joburg and Pretoria.

howzit novice.
where are you actually working? you say you are on a contract in joburg, but will be in town every other weekend????

cape town is a little far for a trip over 2 days, unless you are prepared to fly down. if that is a "yes", then there are a few bike places to rent from down here (both bmw and others) and yes, two-day tours around the cape town area could be worth it.

Thanks for the advice so far.

I am on a project for the company here. I have the option to go home on some weekends. As I have no mates here, I thought I keep that option open.

Just wondering whether there will be cool things to do here with the limited free time I have. Given the warm weather back in London at the moment .. I am missing my bike.

Cape town weekend sounds like a good option. Where can I find more information and prices?

What is the "garden route"?

Nothing to see at Sandton City, rather visit The Lounge near there. Thats all thats good there.

Definately do Pilansberg Game Reserve, its stunning.

I'll 2nd JM's suggestion of the cradle of mankind, go down the sterkfontein caves and to the new museum at Marupeng.

For a DS ride, ride to the big Rock and the impact Crater in one day.
Two different geological sites in the same area just N of JHB and PTA.

CT is worth a flight down, our CT friends can give suggestions there but I like Simonstown, Cape Point and then winelands.

As I am staying in hotel near the East Rand mall, went into Auto Alpina on saturday. Is this the only bike rental place in Jo'burg?

If I do rent a bike what's a good ride for weekends? Not that experienced off road so won't want to do that alone. At the moment, my experience of Jo'burg roads are all pretty much highways. Anything bit more interesting for a bike?

Deciding between just renting a car or a bike at the moment.

BTW .. I thought BMW kit was expensive in the UK, but it was seriously expensive at Auto Alpina. ZAR2850 for a pair of savanna boots!!! I can get that for ?£100 at home.

Well this could be interesting, we always have our ears open for someone to fetch stuff in? Actually, I will be in Germany and the UK next week, anyway.
But Tom, Jo,burg is an interesting place if you know where to go, with some awesome outrides, if you are UK based you would enjoy it.
Any tips on the cheapest places to buy gear, Germany or UK?

Touching on the topic of Cape Point, you need to be quite fit or take the funicular up to the top, even then there is quite a walk

BMW kit prices are a sore point to fans...!  ::)

Re bike hire, you could also try:

Bavarian Motorcycles - Centurion (South side of Pretoria)

As for riding buddies, you could contact the BMW clubs here:
https://www.bmw-motorrad.co.za/en/experience/bmw-clubs-africa.html#/section-join-the-club

Specifically in Gauteng...

http://www.bmwmcpta.co.za/index.php/club/about
Pretoria Club meets at the premises of Bavarian Motorcycles on the first Friday of each month (i.e. last night!)
and has a range of club rides on the Sunday following the first Friday social.
Saturday mornings will find many members in the Dealership enjoying coffee and muffins,
so just pitch at Bavarian Motorcycles and ask around...!  :thumleft:
(You can Uber to there from your hotel)

Club Central is based in Johannesburg. They have socials called "noggins" on the second Tuesday of each month.

They also offer longer rides and club rides.
