Title: A heart warming story ...I hope
Post by: Coxwain on February 09, 2015, 09:08:07 pm
I was'nt going to do this ....ahwww but WTF ...here goes ....Its a long story.

It begins many years ago, I had a good friend...lets just call him Mike.
Mike and me where best friends ...both mad keen on bikes and we did everything together. He had an XT 500 and he even dated my sister.
As we grew older we grew closer and we thought we were invincible ..life was good , and we did many great things together...hiking , sailing , partying , and at one stage we even shared a cottage together. We were good mates.
Then we made the fatal mistake of getting into business together ....disaster ....the friendship fell apart and we didn't communicate for years.
As life would have it , I survived and did alright ...Mike on the other hand got dealt a bum hand and ended up battling his whole life .
Years went by and because of stupid pride and being the stubborn pricks that we are, we didn't talk to each other and bore a grudge , each blaming the other for the failure of a business that should have done well.
About two years ago , we had a chance meeting in a pub in Joburg ...very strained ..but we were civil to each other and managed to talk some of the issues out.
and some of the friendship spark was rekindled.
We have talked a couple of times over the last two years , until this week when I thought Fark it ....this was my best mate...we are both getting old , my health is slowly going down the tubes ...Its time to make amends .

So I phoned him and cut the bullshit. "Im not taking any more of your shit" I said ...."I'm flying you to Cape Town and we are doing the trip of a life time , Your bike is waiting (Honda Dominator) and I don't want any more of your crap "
So my best pal "Mike" is coming down next month and the two old boys are going on a wild trip together. Its been a long time coming.

I'm going to try and document what real friendship is all about and how the power of a motorcycle and the open road can heal a long lost friendship.

So pull up your popcorn and ride along with us on this journey of friendship.....I hope it will warm your hearts.

More to follow as the trip progresses ....stay tuned

Gad....theres always one perv in the pack  :imaposer:
I think I need to explain the background story to this.....
I was at Koedoeskloof a couple of weekends ago with a mate who looks much younger than he actually is.
Heimer , Cocky and some of the dogs where also there. So as we walked in , Debbie greeted us and said to me "Oh I see you brought your son" .......to which I replied .....as a joke ....."He's not my son , he's my lover "
Dammm you should have seen Debbies face  :imaposer:
Needless to say ....I havent lived this one down yet and if my mate ....who is also a dog whom shall not be named , reads this..... I'm going to get blixemed.

Ok ...so the air ticket is booked and "Mike" arrives on the 16th of March.
My plan is to do some local day rides like Franschoek pass , Clarence Drive , BainsKloof to get him into the swing of things. He has never been to Cape Town so I recon
this will be a good start. Then we intend to head off to Koedoeskloof and do the Swartberg pass and The Hell over a couple of days ...visiting as many pubs as we can along the way. Then we see where the road takes us.
Man... I'm looking forward to this, Its going to be great catching up on old times.

I don't think Mike knows quite what hit him as every time I phone him he tells me he dosn't believe this will ever happen ....He got his ticket today

You are a scholar and a gentleman, Coxwain! One sometimes has to get over yourself to be the one to take the first step that will lead to forgiveness, yet you did it (Afrikaans says it best: "Dis moeilik om die minste te wees"). Well done, we are all looking forward to this.

I was a Coxswain for the NSRI for many years. I used to skipper their flagship "The Jack Riley" and eventually ended up as the deputy station commander of Gordons Bay rescue base. But alas the ole ticker conked out and I had to retire on medical grounds ....still miss it  :'(

But yea ....that's where my forum name comes from , and yes I know it is spelt incorrectly , but I use it on another forum where there is a CoxSwain.

Day 1
Mike arrives ...and it was great. Much back slapping , hand shaking and loud laughter, I think the other passengers at the airport thought we were nuts. Ahhh but it is good to see him again.
Straight back to my place to get him settled in and the first celebratory beer was quaffed back in double quick time. (Only one) Then it was outside to introduce him to his ride for the next two weeks. He is thrilled with the Dommi.
So as not to waste any time, we immediately headed off to ride Clarence Drive from Gordons Bay to Rooi Els. Now for those of you who haven't ridden this road, let me tell you , it is spectacular scenery and a beautiful road. Unfortunately.. or maybe fortunately the Cape weather was playing her usual tricks. The South Easter was howling and the clouds and mist where low. But it was truly beautiful , with rainbows over the mountains and a fine rain cooling things down. It just made for some spectacular scenery and some interesting riding. When we got to The Drummand Arms, Mike had the biggest grin I have ever seen, He is totally Gob Smacked. One beer at Rooi Els and we headed back to the Tavern at Gordons Bay where we met up with Talisman. We ended up there till about eight o clock shooting the breeze then eventually got home. All in all a great day ......more to follow

Day 2
Today the weather played along . A glorious day in Cape Town , so we decided to head off to Franschoek. Now bear in mind that Mike has never been to this part of the world , so I thought that the Franschoek Pass would be a good ride.
So ...it was out to Stellenbosch , Up Hell Se Hoogte pass ...always a good ride ...stopped in Franschoek for some liquid refreashment  and tried to be like the beautiful people who seem to hang out there  Then over Franschoek pass and on to Villiersdorp . From there it was on to Elands Kloof and Kaaimansgat. Side note here, Kaaimansgat is a truly magnificent valley , if you havent been there , take my advice and do it .....Mike couldn't believe that such places existed in this country,  it is truly a beautiful place. Then it was back to Grabou and home to Somerset West. A full days riding in some of the most beautiful countryside in the world followed by a good few ice cold beers and a great dinner , prepared by my good wife...what more can a man ask for.
We sat till late last night and talked and talked , it was just like the good old days. The big grins on our faces are becoming permanent

Day 4
Today we did the touristy thing ,  Baden Powell drive to Muisenberg , Kalk Bay , Simons Town and out to Cape Point.
Weather was perfect and Mike is having a ball . He can't believe the beauty of the Cape. So , on to Scarbarough and Misty Cliffs then over Chapmans peak and in to Hout Bay for lunch. Lovely ride. From there it was on to Cliffton to see the beautiful  people and then into Cape Town and up Signal Hill to check out the city.
Then it was back to Somerset West to trade the bikes for a car to pick up the Dark Lord from the airport....hier kom die kak
From the airport , straight to the Arksey Pub in Somerset West for far to many beers and  laughs about the old days. All in all a great day .

Day 5
Woke up this morning  feeling some what worse for wear....eish those dammm Windhoeks...After a slow start , we needed to roadworthy and register the Dark Lord's new ride . It was all done with minimal fuss ...the Gautengers cant believe the efficiency of the Western Cape ....things actually work here
Then it was a quick ride to Rooi Els so the Dark Lord could get used to his new steed . Mike really loves that road and the Dommie is behaving impeccably. His big smile is now a permanent fixture and he is showing an unnatural love for the Dominator .....he even kissed it ....I'm concerned

Day 6 ...Saturday
Navy Day....The plan was to take the bikes out to Simonstown for Navy Day , but the weather played foul, so we went by car. The Dark Lord and myself are old Navy sailors , so we thought it might be interesting to show Mike around our old haunts and visit the submarines that we served on. It turned out to be a very pleasent day and Mike got the opertunity of going on board the old Daphne submarine that I served on .He was fascinated by the technology, and couldnt believe that 50 men could live in a steel tube for weeks at a time.

More to follow.....

Sorry guys ....had to cut that last post short as I was doing it in bed and the wife was moaning......errr.....complaining, about the light being on.

Anyway, to continue......we had a blast at Navy day, which I must say is a well presented show by our somewhat bloated navy personel. We left Simonstown after an extended lunch at Berthas, and headed back to Somerset west to start preparing the bikes for the Swartberg pass trip.

Monday morning
The plan was to get an early start and head off to Koedoskloof,  but the Dark Lord farted around for so long that we only got going at 10.00 am We headed up the N2 to Swelendam and took the Tradow pass to Barrydale. A great lunch at The Country Pumpkin and a very long stop a Ronnies Sex Shop....gees.... I couldnt get Mike and the Dark Lord out of there, and we arrived late at Koedoeskloof, only to find that it was closed . I hadnt booked so Veltie didnt know we where coming. We ended up staying at Mountain View in Ladismith......I wish I had booked at Koedoskloof ...enough said. >:(  The ride to Ladismith was great with all the bikes humming along and Mike soaking up the scenery. Ronnies is always a hoot , and with the Dark Lord being the social animal that he is , we soon had a full blown party under way.
A great day , with far to much booze and laughter , but what the hell ...you only live once.

More to follow......and lots of pics on the way ....be patient

Tuesday
Up at Sparrow fart , and headed towards Carlitzdorp for a quick breakfast before taking the dirt road to Kruisrivier.
Mike and the Dark Lord got really in to the gravel thing with much sliding around corners , foot out like motocross riders and spinning back tyres. The old boys were like kids on a playgroung having a whale of a time on the dirt. I followed sedately on my pig , occasionally getting out front and roosting them for good measure.
Its a great road with unbelievable scenery and very little traffic. Eventually we arrived at the foot of the Swartberg Pass and started the assent. I've done the pass quite a few times and it never fails impress me....The Dark Lord and Mike were totally overwhelmed with the magnificent scenery and the engineering genius of Thomas Bain.
After many stops for photographs we finally made Prince Albert for lunch.
After lunch we decided to take the N12 to Oudtshoorn and do Meiringspoort. When we got to Meiringspoort it was a disaster as the whole pass had been destroyed by flooding. After watching a tow truck fishing cars out of the river for a while , we then continued on to Mossel Bay via the Oudtwaniqua Pass , where we had arranged to stay with a good freind of mine.

more to follow ....and pic on the way

Sir,

I did follow your ride report from the start, thought I get the drift a bit. Now I am sure!
I really appreciate the composition of your photographs. (The Cape skies might help - up here in NW we have long since seen clouds with water in).

I have been on an old sub in Kiel/Germany (like in "Das Boot") and want to express my respect for anyone who served on similar tubes.

In der Stille liegt die Kraft.

Thanks for sharing a really intensive personal story.

   Cheers!

Wednesday
After spending a very pleasent evening in Mossel Bay ....once again , far to many Windhoeks....we headed out back to Somerset West. A pretty unevenful ride with each man alone with his thoughts burning up the highway.
The Dark lord left for Joberg on Thursday and Mike stayed on till today. Mike and I spent Friday riding the Elgin Valley and the highlands and he had his last ride on Clarence Drive ....he really enjoys that road ;D

All in all its been a good two weeks , Mike and I are solid friends and I dont think that will ever change. The Dark Lord had .a blast, and I think he  is really impressed with his new bike. He has left it with me to look after...

So I guess thats the end of my story....I will post more pics soon.

Ohh ...I nearly forgot
I was listening to some Mark Knopfler on the way home , and one of his songs stuck in my mind . I changed the words a little , but it is so relevant to this story that I thought I would share it with you.

So with apologies to Mark Knopfler ..I give you....

Biker to the end

When I leave this world behind me
To another I will go
And if there are no bikes in heaven
I'll be going down below

lf friends in time be severed
Someday we will meet again
I'll return to leave you never
Be a biker to the end

This has been a day to ride on
Now the day is almost done
Up above a choir of seabirds
Turns to face the setting sun
Now the evening dawn is calling
And all the hills are burning red
And before the night comes falling
Clouds are lined with golden thread

We watched the fires together
Shared our stories for a while
Rode the dusty roads together
Came so many miles

This has been a day to ride on
Now the day is almost done
Here the bikes will stand beside us
Silent till the morning comes

If friends in time be severed
Someday here we will meet again
I return to leave you never
Be a biker to the end
