1.) Can smell petrol when I open the tank to fill it
2.) Causes excessive daydreaming about riding, resulting in no work being done
3.) Way too much fun; it can't be legal to have that much fun.

My DR ry soos 'n motord.  Daar MOET iets fout wees met hom!

My DR maak dat ek nog wil he.  En nog!  En nog!  Hoe kry mens hierdie begeerte om 'n stoorkamer vol DR's te he uit mens se sisteem?

I have one which has done over 130,000km and it does not use oil yet. Should I worry? Every KLR uses oil from new :evil6:

I did look into the catastrophic engine failures of the DR650 engine before.

All earlier year models seem to be affected. Irrespective of mileage & how it's ridden.
The number of failures is extremely low (probably under 1 in 1,000 bikes affected, that's my guess from the numbers of reported cases I found on the www).
Suzuki still acted at some stage and modified the gear. I am not sure when the gear was modified and what exactly was done I just know that the part number was superseded. (this does NOT necessarily indicate a design change of a part you would have to actually compare old with new).

It is very difficult to determine if there is an inherent design weakness, if the failures are caused by manufacturing defects or if the failures are caused by abuse. It may (amd most likely is) to some degree a combination of all three causes.

I do know that plenty of DR's reach extremely high mileages under tough condition without ever developing the problem. (I owned seven myself).
I would not replace the gear as a precaution.

Since the end of October 2013 basically only bikes which conform to Euro4 standards (more or less catalytic converter & FI to meet emissions standards) may be registered in SA. Bikes with carbs sold after that date in SA were put into dealer stock before the cut off date.

Means no more new DR's.
