Wat van radiator guards?  Ek sien hulle lyk nog so onskuldig...

BMW supplied and fitted my radiator guards before I took the bike off the showroom floor. I guess it's OK.

:thumleft:

Ek ontmoet hom vanoggend by Zambezi , n Baie aangename ou. Ek hoop ons ry sommer gou saam.  :thumleft: :laughing4:

EK sit my QS Donderdag op ..... Sal julle laat weet.

Dags kerels!

:ricky:

Geniet.

:ricky:

The darker screen looks cool but  PERSONALLY I think it is impractical.  I look through the screen often (being of average length  :-\) and I find it irritating if I can't see things because it's too dark.  With sunglasses on it is even worse.  With shadows across the road (say from a tree or such) potholes or any other obstacle can hide in plain sight, so to speak.  With the darker screen, your chances of seeing things decreases considerably.  But as I said, that is my experience.  But I still think the tinted screen looks cool.

Love them Beeeg time. Did a dash to Cape Town for the "Look what you're missing" TV program and it was so cool. I use a Wunderlich bag on the pillion seat. So I put the cruise control on, feet on the pegs, lean back against the bag, turn the music up and chew up kilos!

I always laugh at my friends at the start of the ride, they mock me about my "Harley" pegs and at the end of the ride they are all ordering a set from me  ;D

I just washed mine by hand after a muddy trip in to the Wellington mountains last weekend

I see so many pictures of showroom condition bikes on here and while washing mine I thought does everyone really spend four hours washing their bikes or do they have Karchers?

And after 3 hours it certainly doesn't look as good as the other bikes photos posted in this thread

On to my shopping list it will go, cheers NK

I was using Diamond Guard car shampoo

You'll still use the shampoo. I start off by hosing down the bike. Then apply CleanGreen to whole bike. Leave for 5-10 min. Hose off and then wash and dry bike.

So I decided I needed more space in my topbox and I want my tools with me everyday when I ride to work, etc.
I've copied other designs that I have seen and built my own box behind the number plate with some re-enforcing.

It works. I used it on a 1,200 km trip two weeks ago which included some hard riding. The aluminium plate has bent a little but I might make some small changes soon to add some extra strength to the bracket, etc.

Here are a few pics......

Firstly never use a high pressure cleaner on your bike.
Second don't compare a bike being used to bikes almost never used.
Third don't compare to Noneking, he buys new ones all the time  ;D

Meurig, your observations about appearances do come up now and again.  Not only here but also in other threads.  One thing that I have learnt over time is that Wilddogs is a forum of people, not a forum of like-minded people.  They may share a common interest in DS bikes but that is more or less where it ends.  They come from all backgrounds, ages, sexes and whatever other parameter you wish to throw in.  What is my point?  There are as many different approaches to kit (bikes included) as there are personalities.  Some will regard a bike as a tool for a specific job and they may mostly be interested in the experience they get from it - where it takes them, the joy of the ride, etc.  Some buy a new bike, ride it through Africa and sell it on the other side - tool for a specific job.  Others have a different relationship with the same item - they will buy it, farkle it and their joy comes from fiddling, cleaning, staring - even just sitting in its presence with a cigar and a glass of cognac (I know such a guy although it is with a car - I am sure there are bikers that do this too).  Anyway, I think you will find yourself somewhere on this scale of extremes.  It does not matter where, as long as you get the joy that you want.  We all need some individuality and your relationship with your bike allows you a bit of that in a world where we mostly have to conform (even if it is only to preserve the peace).  But the bad news is that all bikes age, especially if you use them, and even more so on gravel.

Safe travels.  Those Wellington mountains sound awsome  :thumleft:

Hoe lyk die crash bar plugs?  Ek het sommer sulke swart plestics by die hardeware gekry om die gate toe te maak en dit werk mooi.  Nie juis 'n spog item nie maar doen ook geen afbreek aan die looks nie.  Hulle is baie diskreet en was eintlik 'n pooratech item.

Jip, need to use a tube. Chatting with them they can make a tubeless 21 inch, but then they will have to use a different size rim, this one is the Excel 1.85, which they claim to be stronger than the 2.15. The rear wheel in size 150/70/17 for the LC is tubeless.

So I fitted the 21 inch wheel today, will get to test it tomorrow.

What I did pick up, and for anyone else whom might be interested to do this conversion, is that ASC is a problem in Rain,  Road and Dynamic (only when you accelerate hard) modes, as well as some times in Enduro (only when you accelerate hard), I have picked ASC even when in Enduro Pro (could not believe it...)so, ASC will be switched off during offroad riding...

Also, due to the fact that you do not have a tyre sensor up front any longer, get use to the warning light changing from a flashing orange to a flashing red...

Other than that, very pleased with the final product.

Dit lyk baie cool, Jaco.  :thumleft:  I like the look without the mudguard.

It seems as if any conversion has its drawbacks, especially if there are so many functions linked to it - in this case the electronics controlling the rolling motion and the tyre pressure sensors.  I guess the speedo will also be slightly out or is that controlled from the rear wheel?

What about the ABS? Any issues with braking hard?
Title: Re: What have you done to your R 1200 GS/A LC today?

Hi Eduard,

No issues with braking, and in all modes the ABS still works fine. I am using it Dynamic now, as the ASC only kicks in intermittently from 1st to 4th, and it is not an issue when cruising at normal highway speeds. For offroad I set it on Enduro, and deactivate ASC. Worked well yesterday when I tested it (ABS worked without any issues) but that was only up Breedts Nek and a few other gravel roads in the Hartebeespoort / Brits area. Noticable differences that I experienced is on tar, at higher speeds, the wheel almost feel lighter than standard, but again, not an issue for me as 140km/h max is already fast enough.

Certainly better offroad, can ride a lot slower and more manageable in technical terrain, however, on the road it is noticeable that handling is not so much road orientated as with the 19 front previously, but then again for my riding style it works perfectly.

Speaking of the Mongoose tailpiece, I simply love the end cap that is machined from billit aluminium (instead of being made from sheet metal).

And yes, its sounds awesome. Aggressive, like a dog with a crisp and decisive bark.

Transferred all farkles onto my new LC:

(crashbar plugs, rad guards, headlight cover, crashbar bags, heat shield, larger footrest, screen stabiliser)

Prepped top box for rubberising the inside.

1, Removed stickers
2. Used surgical spirits to remove gunk Nd glue.
3. Gave it a light fine grid sanding.

Transferred all farkles onto my new LC:

(crashbar plugs, rad guards, headlight cover, crashbar bags, heat shield, larger footrest, screen stabiliser)

Prepped top box for rubberising the inside.

1, Removed stickers
2. Used surgical spirits to remove gunk Nd glue.
3. Gave it a light fine grid sanding.
4. washed it nicely and letting it dry.

First coat most likely will go on tonight.

Rubberising done!  :thumleft: http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=207334.msg3797193#msg3797193

Battling to get my electric pump to work as the CANBUS trips. Decided to add a temporary Brad Harrison plug to the frame. Not the most elegant solution , but it works! Also easy to reverse . Held on by a cable tie.

I saw the farkles Edd added to his Bike and got hold of JABO. Collected orange spot covers and radiator guards today. Fitting is very easy. These items are beautifully made and the care and packaging are signs of someone with an eye for detail and an excellent product. Cannot wait for the bash plate to be available for my BIKE.

Just a note. I've heard that some  radiator guards could void your Warranty with BMW. I would phone them to make sure if it was me.

It is subject to the dealer.
Some dealers encourage using the radiator covers, others don't.
Some will even sell it and will honor the warranty.

I rode the bike for 2 weeks and watched the temperature range at specific places. No difference since fitting so happy that airflow is not diminished in any noticeable degree.

I have been using the same radiator guards for the last 3 years and have never experienced any heat issues.
BMW centurion even moved them over to my new bike when I traded up.

Unfortunately it's not up to the dealer but bmw sa.

Sandton motorad got confirmation for me from bmw sa that the brand they fitted is ok and won't void warranty

Correct Bmw Sa do give the official line, but most dealers follow their own heads.
Chat to the dealer as you did is my recommendation.

Bavarian as mentioned above don't have issues but others do like Donford.

I have the 2017 Trophy Edition and fitted Hyperpro progressive springs front and back.

To me and my limited ability, the springs have made a massive difference to the ride. Before I found the bike quite nervous on long stretches of corrugations for instance but now I barely feel them. The suspension feels more plush and a bit softer up top. I like.

I also fitted the Hyperpro steering damper that has 22 settings at the click of a wheel, was still experimenting with the settings before I got my arm in a sling, but was already on a harder setting than the stock one. I cannot say I can feel the difference when riding though.

The two springs were not badly priced, the damper broke the bank .

Fitted a set of Barkbusters with the Storm plastics. Much more secure with my hands behind the bulky aluminium bar. Had a bad incident on my previous bike. Shattered the OEM BMW handguard which is actually only a wind deflector. Bruised hand but could have been far worse. Happier now and most people wont even notice the difference.

No part numbets sorry.  I ordered them from GPS4AFRICA  and specified the Storm hand guards. There are a couple of handguard types that alI fit the aluminium bar. The bar is specific to each bike model. Price R1600. I am sure that you will be able to order from any Barkbuster stockist. Check out the different hand guard styles and colours online

My Akropovic slip on needed to be repacked, as it burnt through, and it discoloured the pipe.

While it was in I had it black Ceramic dipped and then repacked.

now my pipe is as new.  :thumleft:

I will now have a quad black.  :imaposer: :imaposer:

Looks lekker, why didn't you get the pipe powerkoted too?

Very impressed so far, expected more road noise but they're Okay

Bargain price too - R2999 fitted.

Well in my opinion should I say - that price is great!  :thumleft:

Might need to fit that flipper when Etolls eventually come to the cape hahahaha. At the moment I think we just need W-Tolls on our taps

Had a flipper on the Busa so rather rode without a number plate.  Riding a Busa in town does not work.  :lol8: :lol8:

Definitely use flipper at own risk.

Getting back to the Anakee Wild.

Road handling at low speeds i can feel it.
Higher speed is not noticeable and handling is superb.
I ride with ear plugs and can hear tire noise slightly but not enough for me to notice of I do not listen out for it.

Now let's see what km I can get on them.

What mileage do you expect?

Mileage is so subjective. Riding style, riding modes, heavy right hands, road conditions etc etc

That said the online forums and consensus seem to suggest 6-8k on the rear and more on the front. Lets see

Indeed it is.
Comments on mileage goes hand in hand with riding style, gravel/tar/pressure etc.

My Motaz rear is about 70% cooked after about 4000km.
I did trash it a bit with lots of high speed km.

My thinking was that I have to look at the price for the tyre. I still commute and these are obviously more 20/80 than 50/50 - leaned towards off road

But - they cost R2999 for the set, which aside from Tourance scrubs, is not beatable

So if I get 8000 on these somehow, its 37.5c per km

If I go get say the K60s they would have to give me 11,000kms to be equivalent.

I am more just looking forward to seeing how these do on dirt, even if that exposure is sadly limited for me. I just really hate taking a "dirt" dual purpose tyre like the Scorpion Trail or somethinig offroad. It instills no confidence and I just find it an utterly shit experience all round. At least now I'll have fun on dirt, and they handle great at speed on Tar. Just at the sacrifice of mileage.

True what you say.
The other side of the coin is that, in my case commuting daily, the Motaz front weaves unpleasantly at higher speeds.
I've played with tire pressures on the front between 2 and 3 bar, and the result is the same.
The Anakee 3's I had on before was absolutely fantastic on tar, but then again I wouldn't want to tour eg. the Tankwa on it.

Guess its a matter of finding the best compromise.
I would be keen to hear opinions regarding weaving on other brands.

Try TKC 70. They are good for both.  I have 70 on the back and TKC 80 on the front. Very very good combination in my opinion

Well the Anakee Wilds got me Home and back in todays ridiculous winds and I didnt have any weave or wobble right up to 170kph (I mean 120 officer...)

So thats a good sign for now. Did a teeny tiny bit of dirt on Monday and was lekker, but I would suggest lower pressures than stock for extended use there

Even better, wash it - next morning drive to work, park outside - and they start digging up half a road next to your office. Covered in dirt. Lasted all of 12 hours

oh well. Excuse to do more dirt roads "its dirty already"

I bought a SM Motech engine guard for my bike. Boy what a mission - 2 hours later I got it fitted. The flippen bracket that goes around the round rear stabilizer between the foot pegs is a bastard.
The gap between the swing arm and the top clamps that go in this area are near to impossible to get to.
My wifes small hands were required.
I must say that the standard BMW plate and brackets are useless and to think that they also protect the pipes - I don't think so.

Thank you

the top clamps (part 5) cannot go over the bar with the nuts (part 11) in place. You have to slide them in after the clamps are in place !! and don't forget the locktite.
Once you have them in place you need to test fit the plate before tightening them. Once the plate is on you cant get access to these...  wtf..

I should have known something was up when the guy at the sales counter asked me if I was going to fit them with a grin on his face..

I did not feel like taking photos at the time therefor the instruction have been added.

Mine had it fitted when I bought it. Its an extremely nice-to-have. But I'm not sure I would fork out the cash to have it retrofitted.
If you riding style leans more to the aggressive, I'd go for it, not so much if your riding style is easy going.
The gear assist likes revs, up and down.

Makes one feel a bit like a Rossi when you go for breakfast run to Mugg&Bean, while in reality it probably only makes you look like a Lorenzo ;)

Hi Brucet
Herewith a close up of the bash plate - very good quality but pricey.

I have added other bits that I have found extremely useful as well:
- Headlight shield
- Crash bar brace
- Cylinder head covers.

I added the gear shift assist pro and have not looked back.
Well worth the money.
You will really miss it once you ride a loan bike without it.

Zoobie the gearshift assist cost R6382.21. Then the enabling code was R553.26 and then fitting was R360.00

I think it is well worth it and works brilliantly. Ive tried it at low speeds and at higher speeds with no issues.

I also fitted a headlight protector and got a cool little reflective sticker from Nocturnul_Thingie for the rear poop scoop (is that correct)?

Thats ok. Better them than the frame. When they get to damaged I can replace them also as they are fairly inexpensive.

The wunderlich are about R300 more expensive and I am not sure about the look. Im sure they will also get scratched and worn out though

Added pillion seat toolbox.

Works great for full toolkit and raincoat.

Don't need top box anymore that just messes with offroad handling. Did some dirt roads with mates near Assen. My first real experience with this type of riding on this bike. Was really good fun although I was much slower than them, which they didnt mind. Found the bike a bit twitchy in soft sand and loose gravel but got used to it. Felt much more confident on the tar after the dirt roads.
I think I may need better tyres though as the standard tyres didnt really grip well but dont know really what to get as I do probably 90% tar. Also got the bike full of mud for the first time.

It's quite rough. The melting snow, it seems, took most sand with it, leaving exposed (and very loose) rocks in its wake. No fun negotiating those switchbacks while the earth beneath you also moves. My Karoo 3 has chunks out the back tyre the way I was slipping around. Make sure your tyre still have deep grooves (or high knobs).

That being said, I consider myself of limited skills. This was my third Sani trip, and the first time I rested a bit. Very grateful for the people that stopped and help pick the bike up!

Agreed but locally I was quoted between R6k and R10k for something that they were not sure could be made up to the same standard. I also could not find anyone that could do it straight away without wanting to keep the bike for a few days and my experience with the local guys is a few days turns into weeks always. I also wanted something tried and tested and I really doubt you will find anything locally that has the same quality workmanship, even the stock pipe is not made as well as the Akrapovic for example on the flages that fit to the heads the welds are really rubbish compared to the Akrapovic - it looks almost moulded and not welded.
It is expensive but its a top quality product and I have absolutely no regrets about spending the money.

The cheapest option I could find would be to cut out the cat and replace with a piece of pipe. (I was quoted "around R3000") and when asked how long you need the bike i was told a "day or three" which did not give me much confidence.

Without reading all the pages  :imaposer:

I have seen some okes put a bar underneath the nose/beak from 1 side cashbar to the other.

1. What is the reason?
2. Where can I get for the LC Adv?

You don't know what the purpose of it is, but you want one!  :imaposer: :imaposer:

That bar you are referring to joins the SW-Motech aftermarket upper crash bars on the standard GS LC.  The GSA has factory fitted upper crashbars that don't use the extra bar, since they are attached to other brackets behind the plastic panels.

Thought it had something to do with more strength under the beak or
something.
