Title: DR 650 as a trails bike

Ja, ja, I know it will never be a true dirt bike like your KTM two stroke, but that is not what I have in mind - mostly because it is impossible to make it into one and, secondly, I lack the skill to ride an offroad bike to its potential. ;D

Also do not want to convert it into a DS bike - done that and have the T-shirt.

So I am thinking - what I like riding when off-road is some fire roads, some tweespoor. Normally I would ride that with my TW, but sometimes some range and power is lekka too.

Look on the web and not much there - everyone is busy making it a DS which, putting stuff on it. I want to make it lighter and meaner. So far -

Plastic tank (bought with the Clark already on) - nice size and light
GSXR exhaust
Livened it up a bit - raised needle, unifilter and correct heat range plugs
peg lowering kit from flying brick
handle bar raisers from chopperpilot
Renthal bars
removed rear footpegs
removed top chain roller
larger sprockets 16/48 giving the same ratio (0.33) as applicable to a 14/42 mod which is one tooth down in front from 15 sprocket
520 chain
removed rear tailpiece - tail tidy
removed side stand cut-out switch and disabled clutch cut out switch.
agressive knobblies - T63 front and D606 rear with HD tubes

want to remove the grab bars and replace with an integrated very narrow and light rack. Small, light but bright indicators, better rear view mirrors, etc. Perhaps a lighterront light assembly. I actually prefer the ugly american rear light so will keep that. Cheap handguards loosely fitted. In a fall they get damaged in any event and I do not want to brake my wrist on them - better still would be some levers that would not break (if there is such a thing).

Any other things that I can do to make it lighter and more dirt worthy?

ZA ry sy DR net soos die YZ.  OK, so bietjie stadiger want sy bike is nog mooi.  Die DR is swaar, maar het die krag om daarvoor op te maak.

I'm looking at doing the tubeless/ sikaflex conversion on my 600 and yes the naysayers will line up but I have a trick up my sleeve learned from my 4x4 days..

Great link dankie Chris, het hom nie voorheen raakgeloop nie. Wat hierdie ouens se is presies wat ek ook in gedagte het.

Ek het al saam met plastics op bergagtige plantasie brandpaaie probeer ry...en ook al in Swazi met 'n paar rowwe karakters op ADV bikes swaar getrek, maar lekker gery met die DR.

Die bike se gewig tel teen jou, so ook jou eie gewig, en dan natuurlik jou fiksheid.

Wees selektief waar jy ry, en bly weg van waar die bokke wei!

Mark Taylor hier by ons is die kampioen as dit by roete uitleg kom. Meestal rooi roete, met elke nou en dan 'n swart stukkie om jou op jou tone te hou.

As dit baie tegnies raak, en jou fiets se gewig teen jou tel, sorg dat jy genoeg hulp by jou het. Verkieslik jou ry buddies, of van die plaaslike bevolking om te help!

Jy kan gou in die moeilikheid op jou eie kom!

Jou DR se voorbereiding klink goed. Die sprocket ratios behoort 'n lekker crawler te wees!

Bande en tubes ook reg.

Min van die DR kan verwyder/verminder word om die DR se gewig te verminder.

As jy kan, weeg asb jou DR vir ons.

Teen 'n helling gaan die DR se gewig altyd teen jou tel.

 :lol8: krag is daar verseker. Jy kan jou hele headlight afhaal en vervang met n after market ligter een soos n Polisport. Chain guard kan afkom. Rear mudflap kan afkom. Passenger pegs met die brackets kan jy ook afstrip.

Ek het 'n spaar DR enjin in die Kaap gekoop. Geen carb, clutch en olie nie. Header pyp en oil cooler ingesluit. Die enjin alleen was 48kg.

The only thing I need to still do is a decent rear shock, we spent Sunday morning cutting trails over some serious rocky mountains, with the bottom end these bikes have it's a piece of cake.

Ek soek n baie goeie design - een wat ook die kant olie filter cover sal beskerm nadat ek gesien het wat met Matie Sparro sn gebeur het.

Firm up suspension and improve brakes

Ja, I need to get a stiffer rear spring for my fatt butt. Must still decide on what type of modification i must make to the front. Remember, I do not want to go do jumps on a MX track - just want something with a bit better damping.

If that's what you want to ride then you are over thinking and just trying to justify the decision you already made  :pot:

The DRís strongest point is the very slow off road stuff. It can crawl along at idle speed without any throttle or clutch input, and when you apply throttle, the take up is smooth and gradual. In the same conditions, my KTM threatens to stall all the time and when I apply the throttle, itís like flicking a switch.

The standard suspension does not handle the high speed rough stuff well, but upgrades are fairly cheap.

The following front ends - complete forks and triple clamps - will fit on a DR650SE:

hahahaha dit was anyway nooit lekker om bitch te ry by jou nie, kon nooit my arms halfpad om kry nie!!!!

maar soos die mane se, grader maar eerder jou agter shock op voor jy warry oor die grame verloor deur jou pegs af te haal!!

The flickers are just small R200 per pair jobbies, rear grab handles are stock but I have modified a PSP rack to fit inside the handles as opposed to over them, WR front end, widened and lengthened the foot pegs, aluminum gear shifter, FCR39 (YZ450) carb, KTM front fender, IMS tank fekking loud exhaust etc etc etc,, works well for me
