Title: Oversized 690 riders
Post by: adv on May 14, 2015, 10:02:44 am
Im thinking about a 690 to replace my 950S and a little concerned with size (of the bike)

Any tall riders? I know comfort isn't its strong point.  But I dont want it to look like a BMX underneath me.

I need to spend a little bit of time in the saddle of a 690.

It's so uncomfortable you'll only want to spend a little time on it  ;D

Think carefully about want you want to do with the bike, longer tours are not its strong points unless you're adding extra tanks. For around town and dunes and offroad tracks, you'll love it, hooilgan machine of note.

I only ride my 950 on longer trips. Ie southern cape, West coast etc. With little baba nearly here is think my 5 day trips are going to have to wait a while.

I will still do day rides. Tankwa, cederberg, atlantis that sort of thing.

Good point, your wings will be clipped somewhat  ;)

I love my 690 but its touring abilities (or lack thereof) frustrate me. Iím not used to only getting 200km on a tank but then again, a 950SE getting caned will get even less than that. Iím not saying donít buy it, just plan accordingly  :thumleft:

First suggestion is buy a bike with extra tanks on it already, theyíre kak expensive to add on afterwards and you never get your bucks back for them.

Iíve no doubt you will love a 690 and I can put safe money on it that you will ride that YZ even less after buying one because it can literally do it allÖ even tour if well equiped  ;)

Define "Big".

Kierie is not the smallest person I know, with a 690.

Not as easily as an XR650R....

You wont look funny, I look like a normal bloke on a 450 when on the 690.  But the leg space is limited and expensive to fix.  If you have short legs, this is no issue.

Mmm I'll start looking for a decently priced oryx. I suppose gearing can be tailored for rides. I like the idea of lower running costs on the 690. They are usually lighter on fuel than the 990 counterparts and with a 16t front and rallye type setup cruising  at 150 should not really be a problem.

Problem is that most of them in the market have about 20k km on.

I'm 6.3 weighing in at around 97kg and love this bike. No problem with top end with a 16 sprocket but don't think it was build for that kind of speed IMO. Am about to put new spring in the back cause its a bit soft but the front with two 5 litre tanks upfront is good. On more then one occasion of spend a day in the saddle and it runs really well.

Awesome. 6.'5 and 110kg. Good to hear it fits  well.

Steve, look around for a well-priced "R" around 2010, buy and ride it. If it does not suit your taste, not a big loss.

It is an amazing motorcycle, and the harder you ride them, the better they work. In fact when dawdling along the Karoo roads, my 19voertsek XT600 is a better bike,
better packing space, better small-ripple suspension, and MUCH smoother low-rev cruising.

The "rally-look" is also a point with which I would not go, the wind protection will be great, but the added crash-damage risk and also weight I find going directly against what the 690 stands for. This is of course each owner's own choice.

The 690, for a single, is surprisingly powerful, yet I have gotten 25.3 km/lt as a personal best a few weeks ago, downhill from Sutherland/Ouberg/Ceres.

I find it not too uncomfortable on long roads.

Dankie vir die advies.  Was al die niggles gesort op die 2010 modelle?

I'd personally look at a 12-13 model. Less issues and of course, 690cc vs 654cc. The 2011 and 2010 bikes had better suspension apparently

2009 has the longest suspension travel of them all
