Title: Handing over the Sanwild money collected by Wilddogs - 24 May 2008
Post by: Red on May 01, 2008, 03:40:05 pm
As requested by Kilroy.

There are quite a bit of accomodation in the area, including the Eiland Holiday Resort.  As soon as we determine the numbers, I will find the appropriate spot.  Alternatively, someone's farm would be quite nice as well.

Who's coming with?

Sanwild is close to Letsitele, which is close to the Eiland Holiday resort.   Ther are several other camping spots with chalet's as well.

Shall we leave the Saturday morning, hand over the cheque the afternoon and come back on Sunday?

Hey Guys!
I may still be a newbie, but I can offer the following ...
My parents own a small farm about 13km from Eiland. The farmhouse only has 2 double beds and 2 single beds so we'll only be able to sleep 6 people. Your own sleeping bag and cushion is also required as we cannot leave bedding there due to it being the favourite thing to steal around there. For the more hardcore camping guys, there is a bit of space on the fairly big lawn, with an outside flush toilet and hot water shower. Very basic, but fun.

I've also just returned from a trip there and found a place that looked like a good Wild Dog spot. It's in the old ghost town of Leydsdorp. It's not too far from Letsitele and you have to drive a bit of dirt road to get there. (Probably not a problem ...  ;D ) Also, it has a LOT more atmosphere than Eiland. I talked to the old guy that seemed to be running the place. They have nice bar and restaurant there and can sleep 6 couples and 2 singles, so 14 people in total. We were only there for a quick stop so I didn't sample the food, but the beer was nice and cold! It sounded like it would only cost R1500.00 to book the entire place. I didn't have a look at the facilities, but judging from the well stocked bar, they should be fine.

I suck at organising stuff so I'll just post their details here ...

Dick & Hannetjie Welman
Lodge, Restaurant & Bar
Luxury accomodation in historic Gold Rush Town

Phone/Fax (015) 318-4466
Cell - Dick (079) 478-3457
Cell - Hannetjie (072) 069-1797

Even though I'm probably at bit late to help donate, I would also like to join in on the ride!

Stephan just send me the Tarrifs letter from Eiland and let me tell you the list of rules are a whole A4 page long.

Ok - am speaking to Louise.  I am trying to obviously organise a personal tour, personal chat about how she came to be doing this and how it has grown and all of that good stuff.

Maybe should organise something to the Lion Park Sanctuary down here in Cape Town at the same time?

Expect something big coming from this.  The ride will be cool.  Any CT people thinking of joining?

Ok - just received this mail from Louise at Sanwild (see, doing good can and will make you famous):

Dear Lejane

This is great news, thanks for your perseverance.  I fully agree, one cannot always have everyone like you, but in general it is good to see people taking animal welfare and rights a whole lot more serious.

I would be happy to meet with them the 24th and we will also make a light lunch available to them along with a talk and introduction to SanWild.  We still do intend release the dogs and their R10 000,00 will go towards setting the dogs free by upgrading perimeter fences.

Pls let me know how many people we should expect and I will also arrange a reporter from a local newspaper and will issue a press release and statement to larger paper like die Beeld ect.  Riding through the reserve with bikes might be a problem, but I am sure we can discuss this and if they drive slowly I am sure we can let them drive up to the main camp at least.  I will also find out from SABC news if they are interested in doing the story - good PR for us and you.

Kind and warm regards
Louise

Isn't this fabulous fabulous news?

It's sooooo exciting !

I have spoken to Dick at Leydsdorp and they have place available.

The lodge have 7 double rooms and he's got no problem with people camping on the lawn "if they are brave enough for the Bushveld" to quote him verbatim.  All bedrooms have double beds apart from one which has 2 single beds.

He made another suggestion as well.  There is a game farm 3km away from him sleeping 20 people in the hunting camp.  He will phone so long to hear if they are open on the 24th.  I just love people in the country!!

He need numbers though.  Here is how I have it at the moment.

Adventurer & Peaches
Aquatic & the Ms.
Kilroy
Zerc
Panne
Red
Stephan
Ryperd & Jockey
Gryshond?
Bemmer Man?
Lourens.dL?
Shark_za?

11 definates and 4 maybes?

Thanx Perd, but I don't wanna bunk with you ;D

Latest figure as for today is R11823 - last payment from Gryshond (R500) on 3/5/08.

Guys this money was paid into my personal account, so I don't want to post the statement here ;D  What I shall do is to take the statement with (or sommer before) so that Red can audit the payments and veridate the accuracy - is that ok?

BIG THANX TO OPERATOR who started this innitiative.  Its sometimes just take some guts and will to make a difference - Great work Dewald thanx a million.  He really deserves the praise.!!

It may may may be possible for me to get away for a night, but only one.....I'm trying to liaise with Mark and I do have a friend who is willing to stay, so it could be good.

What happens if I don't want to go home though afterwards?  I've never been away from them and a night of freedom might just tip me into never going back *giggle*

EV, you need to makadaplan, so we can makadaplan this side.
If you can only get away for one night it will be tight, but you will need to be on the very first flight up from CT, Peaches can fetch you from the airport en route to Tzaneen, but that is at least a 4 hour drive by car, so a late lunch at the venue will be needed.
Ideally you need to be here on Friday night, but if you can't swing it that's fine, we'll sort something out.
Please let us know asap if you can make it, it would be really cool if you are there as well.

Who is volunteering with a dirt route back?  I think we might be pressed for time on the way there.

It's quite a stretch Kilroy. From Petroport outside Pta to Leydsdorp is 390km (tar all the way).

I'd suggest the N1 to Polokwane and then some dirt in the Magoebaskloof area to Leydsdorp.  ;)

Guys, apart from the one bed open in Zerc's room all the rooms in Leydsdorp Lodge are now full.

The other game lodge I talked about is only 3 kms from there.  PM me for the lady's cell phone.  She has still got accomodation for that evening.  She said she's got several chalets and 2 big rooms that can sleep 8 people each.  You can take your pick.

Here is a link to Leydsdorp.  I can't wait now.  It is definately a place with some history.  Lions on the stoep of the hotel chased away by a lady "nogal".  Sound like my type of girl.

Here is a map to the place.

Due to the number of responses and people still coming on board, I have decided on another course of action.

The Game / Hunting Lodge have a total capacity of 28, including two rooms sleeping 8.

Quite a few guys indicated that they want to bring their families as well and there is even talk that we go on Friday night already and make it a weekend.

So the new take on it is that everyone decide when, where and with who they want to ride / drive and make their own bookings at the accomodation of choice.

Here is Leydsdorp Lodge details:
Dick & Hannetjie Welman
Lodge, Restaurant & Bar
Phone/Fax (015) 318-4466
Cell - Dick (079) 478-3457
Cell - Hannetjie (072) 069-1797

The Game Lodge Details:
Sanet (083) 448 0861

In my opinion the Game Lodge might be a better option for families.

I don't care.  I will see how things pan out.

Operator!!!!!!  Are you ignoring us today?

As an afterthought.  We are so close to R15,000.00.  Can't we have a last push for a nice round amount?

I have cancelled our full booking of Leydsdorp Lodge.  Please phone and book you accomodation.  Sorry guys, I just could not keep up.  Some guys wanted to bring their families, some wanted to stay for the weekend, but still had to sort out the permissions.  I just could not keep track anymore.  Both Lodges are very friendly and accomodating.  I don't think there will be a problem at either one of them.

I booked a double room for me and Stephan at the Game Lodge for the Friday and the Saturday night.  We are going to make it a weekend away.

Just some thought.  Shall we all come as we please but meet at 11:00 at the Letsitele Police Station, or does anyone know of another venue we can all easily identify in the town?  I think we should arrive at Sanwild together.

Anybody going to be leaving from Pretoria Saturday morning who will be doing 650 speeds? (Thats 650cc not 650km/h). I was thinking of going via Marble Hall and avoiding the N1 as much as possible while still sticking to tar for speed.

Yeah, can't wait to see you either, Kilroy.

I wish, it's just that this is the first time in about 14 years that I am leaving the cats for more than an overnight (and when I mean overnight, that's from 6 in the evening to maybe 6 the next morning, so really......) and I'm quite nervous.

I'm sure you will all help me overcome these so yeah, maybe I won't want to go home  :o :o

Hi Red,

I'm sure that the WD's can and will help, but it is the suppliers that determine the time frame, if they process & deliver everything next week, then the WD's can help with shopfitting etc, and I can join this ride, but alas the suppliers said the week after.  >:( :(

It is now in the balance if I will make it but if I do I will sleepover at the in-laws in Makopane(Potgietersrus).  Its about 200kms form there and I'll shoot through on Saturday morning and back in the afternoon.

Backroads, past Condom City, Groblersdal, back way into Pietersburg, or whatever it's called these days, from there to Tzaneen then onto Leydsdorp. I will probably be topping quite often for fuel...... ;D ;D
Peaches, Cherry and EV will be leaving ORT/JHB Int around 12-45, direct route.

I live in the mighty city of Polokwane (Pietersburg)  ;D. Will probably join up with you and Beemerman on Friday afternoon if that's ok?

Cool, another Katoom, might intimidate Beemer Man a bit.... ;D
Pm me your cell no, I'll give you a shout regarding our ETA in Pietersburg, we'll probably stop there for fuel, let us know which filling station would be best to meet us at.

Beemerman aint intimidated!! ;D

I'll remove the baffles on those Leo Vince's, Two Brothers se moer.... ;D ;D

Hi all, haven't folled this much. Will it be ok to drop in at a last minute. Camping work for me. Will there be a place to pitch a tent for 1 night or so. Where is the WD office where the money will be handed over. Is it in Letsitele itself. Maybe i'll take a tar trip and do a eastern tvl return.

Hope it can work for me. Probably can if I can pitch a tent somewhere.

Cheers
Niekie

Speak to Red about camping, but there is still place at Leydsdorp lodge, R200-00 per person per night. Apparently Leydsdorp consists of 5 buildings, the lodge owner owns 4 of them..... ;D
You could probably pitch your tent in the middle of the main road and be quite safe... ;D

Last time I checked we were just shy of R12k - we shall keep the electronic donations open untill 15h00 on Thursday.  I shall then cash up, print a statement, write a check and give to Red.  Any cash is naturally welcome at the venue, but from an electronic perspective - only untill Thursday at 15h00.

Thanx so far...!!!!

Ok - the babysitter has a 32 page document with each animal plus full colour picture plus favourite eating habits plus lists of what to do and not to do......

The neighbours are notified, the brother is on standby, the babysitter has the whole of each Capetonian activist's number - the food is sorted and numbered by date and time and snacks and nibbles are provided as well as chewies, I have a walker for Katie M for each morning and evening, all items that can be chewed are out of reach, emergency rations plus emergency beds in the garage should any animal get locked out inadvertently, light timers etc are sorted, cat litter is available all around, blankets are all over for cuddling and babysitter has been taught how to switch on heater for an hour in the evenings to warm the rooms up for the cats.

I of course, haven't even packed yet.....
