Title: Not a ride report, but a drive report through the heart of Darkness
Post by: DeepBass9 on May 08, 2008, 06:52:00 pm
Today I went out to see an exploration project in southern DRC. Fidel Catso said he might like to do a ride to here so here are some snaps so you can see what it is like. I'm not going to use any names beacuse I don't want my client googling his project and coming up with a ride report, but you'll get the idea. The trip started out this morning from Lubumbashi going south on the road to Kasembalesa. The pic below show the road, being the main road into southern Congo. There are zillions of decrepit trucks on this road, with many broken down wrecks scattered about.

It didn't take long for our Mistubishi 'town' car to have it's fuel injection system shaken out of operation. Some concerned people:

Landcruisers to the rescue! There is only one vehicle to use in Africa and that is a Landcruiser. It's the only thing that will get you there and back again laden in rough terrein. I haven't seen one landy in the DRC yet, the cruisers have probably towed them all back over the border.

The project is right up against the Zambia border, so the pics below show a border beacon from the Zambian and Congolses side, and then yours truly in both countries at once. C on the beacon = Belgian Congo, and R = Northern Rhodesia.

Is that diesel on the road in the first pic?

No, that's water, the chinese are busy fixing that road so they water it to keep the dust down.

Thanks DB9, missed this post initially.

Ya Cruiser is what you find here, nothing else lasts. What where you guys doing there?

Easy border to cross, looks like the right place for smuggling. :D

It was actually light harted, when i mentioned the riding there. I think its not really adviseably yet, specially further north to the French Congo side.

You buggered injectors is probably as a result of the tomato juice in the fuel.

Post more pics of the local jallopies there my man.
