Title: DR 650 FCR carb convertion

Got a FCR-MX 39 Carb to test fit to my bike before I decide to buy. Came off a YZF450 quad, so a bit of work required ala the well pulished MX Rob conversion. Has the air cut-off valve to reduce popping. Is a beautiful piece of kit.

It has a 146 main jet in. I cannot see what the pilot size is. I also cannot see the markings on the needle - hope it is a EPM.

Anyone else running this carb?

Jet specs? Were can I get jets in PTA?

Impressions?

Playing around with the carb at present.

Test fitted it on the bike and it started right up.

Need to sort out some gaskets though as it leaks on the main body

The FCR-MX is a split body carb.

So the bad news here is that somebody previously split the body for some reason and, unfortunately, removed the gaskets that was there.

The problem with this is that Keihin do not sell that rubber gasket with any of their repair kits for the carb. In other words - not user servicable.

Would also appreciate a comparison between your, Stuart's and Matie's DR, who has a stock, but modified BST carb?

How did you make the inlet and outlet carb adapters for the FCR?

The carb belong to Pielas and he was kind enough to let me fool around with it a bit. He had the air horn step-up machined here in PTA and the guy did a great job. The front of the carb fits into the cylinder boot without any need for modification. The carb fits nicely and, was it not for the missing gasket, I would have been able to run it on the DR.

 I sripped and cleaned the carb and had a chance to really look the FCR-MX over. I think it is a great carb - streets ahead of the BST in terms of quality and features.

I gave it back to Pielas today as I have to reasemble the DR.

You sure are a busy man!

Slight hi-jack. Bash plate is nearly done. Terence was going to bring my DR back Friday afternoon, then discovered a slight misalignment when fitting it. Should be done this week. I'll remind him about the TE 610 hardware!

That is good news, thanks for the update :thumleft:

Just check with him whether the SM and TE mounting hardware is the same - it should be, but you never know.

Fooling around with the carbs this weekend actually turned out to be a blessing as I discovered that one of my throttle cables was nearly totally severed - only hanging on by a single strand :o

Better making that discovery in the garage than in the bush.

Confirm the TE bash plate will be fitted to the SM?

If the frames are different, then I should cancel the hardware?

One set of fittings for a SM bashplate, and one set fittings for a TE Hyde bash plate?

There is hardly any info on the net, for installing the slanted one on the DR.

I am busy parting a DRZ, and had the slanted body.

Considered fitting it, therefore my extensive research (search).

Apparently 95% as effective as the MX.

Sounds as if many of the features of the FCR are on the outside of the carb body with the slanted one, and inside on the MX.

On gravel, the increased power only results in wheel spin. I do mostly off-road and get only 2500 kms on a D606. I ride civilised on tar.

For the DR's conversion, there was a comment regarding a clearance issue with the starter.

I can not comment regarding a performance comparison, except the 95% as effective as the MX, whatever that means!

Re-fitted the SM's carb today.

Played around with the float hight setting as well.

Found the easiest way go do it was to remove the bowl, blow into the fuel inlet pipe and then tilt the carb to see when the needle opens and when it closes. This makes it  ery easy to set the float hight at the level that you want.

Another way, of course, is to make use of a clear plastic tube, open the drain screw and check the level of the fuel in the carb that way.

Just dont be an idiot like me and forget to properly tighten the drain screw.

Die truuk is natuurlik dat n ou die drain skroef moet oopmaak sodat die petrol in die tube inloop en dan nog petrol in die fuel inlet moet ingooi todat die float styg en die needle toedruk. Nou eers kan n ou sien hoe hoog die maks float level in die carb is.

Mens wil graag die vlak he naby die float bowl se edge, maar nie meer nie.

Just stumbled on this thread now.  The body gaskets are available from motocomp in Natal tel 073 750 9697.  I bought a set for my WR, but haven't had to fit it yet as Dux fixed it with a glue.
