Title: A Ginger and a Porra Foreskin do KZN
Post by: Mikie on August 18, 2015, 10:57:03 am
The KZN Wilddogs bash was coming up and I really wanted to go, KZN is my favourite province its green, the weather is fantastic and the people are friendly. This was the perfect opportunity to do some exploring in areas I have never been to. I planted the seed with the Foreskins, two were far too busy with work, its not easy running your own companys. GingerBreadMan however, took the bait, hes been dying to get Oros on a trip again, having only done 6000km in more then a year of owning it was turning into a motorcyclist.

Stay tuned.....

I plotted the routes and included a few sights of interest, I always thought the Capies had it very lucky with all the mountain passes in their side of the world, never realising that the Banana boys have just as spectacular roads, if not better. And most of these passes aren’t documented, most probably nameless.
We left Jozi on Thursday 6 August, two days ride down, one day at the bash and two days back.
Day 1 – Midrand to Memel

We had 382Km to cover, We met in Midrand at 8am, we had to deal with traffic out of Jozi and out through the far east.
It took us an hour to get to Springs and we were already hungry. I didn’t know Wimpy had roadhouses, maybe only in the Far East

From there is was through Nigel and we hit the dirt towards Greylingstad, easy riding farm roads all in good condition

Before Standerton, the Ginger was already moaning about Oros’ brutality on his rear end.
I suspect he may have been checking for oil leaks while down there too

Yup - Wimpy Roadhouses - another one just opposite the Benoni Lake Golf Course next to the N12 - in case Springs is too far away....

The road got a little looser in places closer to Memel but nothing hectic.

Finally arriving in Memel around 4pm, we were in dire need of a few cold ones

We stayed at Memel hotel with Chris (Memelman) and Audrey as our hosts. If you have never been there I absolutely recommend the place to stay, well looked after, stocked bar, good food, comfortable sleeping and also fantastic riding in the area for a weekend away

Day 2 – Memel to Sakabula lodge

We woke up to a cold Memel, I think the cold made me feel a little nauseous and gave me a headache, it had nothing to do with the previous evenings Captain Morgan consumption.

We had 416Km to do to the Bash lodge, sounded doable, but it also depends on the roads and conditions you’re riding in. The route I had plotted was by far mainly dirt.
We had 3 named passes to cross as well, I was looking forward to those. We were pretty amped after the previous days riding, the nice thing was that the landscape had changed, we were entering mountainous terrain, the Highveld terrain gets so boring, all just flat and dull.

After breakfast we settled out account, bid farewell to our hosts and Hit the road, well after The KTM got more fuel, poor thing has such a small tank.

Next up was Normandien pass, I had heard a lot of talk about this pass and how spectacular it is, but that was about it, http://www.mountainpassessouthafrica.co.za/ (http://www.mountainpassessouthafrica.co.za/) says this pass is for 4x4 only and also only for advanced Motorcycle riders. We are Bikers, we qualify, how hard can this be?

Some of the route up is cemented for better traction but there are parts with small step ups and rocky outcrops. One step up I hit caused my front wheel to bounce sideways, I looked to the right and about 1.5m away was the edge to the abyss, its high, I did crap myself, what if……
But we made it to the top and I can now tick another pass off my list. It was awesome to summit that. In my experience, that was the most technical pass I have tackled to date, Sani wasn’t even close, it’s too well maintained nowadays. Normandien probably isn’t the hardest out there, but it’s taken tops on the ones I have done on a big bike. Personally I would also rather do this pass up and not down.

From there down was nice and easy, very gradual decents over long distances, you barely noticed it, headed towards Collings pass. But the road did get Rocky, rocky as in loose gravel rock all over the road, you stick to the tracks and its ok, but occasionally the track disappears and you’re riding on marbles, this carried on for what felt like forever, Just on and on, serious concentration all the way.
Collings pass left nothing to write about, I am sure it has some sort of historical value but it’s just ok.
I didn’t take pictures there, but we did find a spot to have a drink of water, a smoke and a rest.

This spot was eerie, dead quiet!
After we stopped engines and helmets off, we heard a cow in the distance mooing but after that, we noticed the silence, absolutely no sound at all. Incredible.

The days riding had started to take it out of us, more me than GingerBreadMan, we had only eaten Breakfast, it was midday now and I could have done with some food, but that was the least of my complaints, the water in my camelback tasted like crap, a beer could have gone down so well and made me feel more content, but there was none. We pressed on, the road still needed some serious concentration, lots of loose gravel, time was working against us, we still had a long nice scenic loop to make before reaching the bash venue, we didn’t want to get there after dark. Pitching tents in the dark sux, contending with ridiculous lawless drivers in the dark is even worse.
Finally, I thought we found beer, we reached Weenen, if this is not a ghost town, it should be. So we moved on….
We eventually made it to Greytown, surely there will be a decent pub around here for a quick beer and maybe something to snack on. One would think, the best I could find was in the heart of the taxi rank in the dodgiest part of town, there was no way we were parking our bikes in the street there with all our gear on it, after riding up and down streets trying to find a beer grumpy me decided to stop in front of KFC, a coke each and a quick little burger made things better. Back onto the R33 and here we decided to make the call to stay on the R33 to Pietermaritzburg, we were cutting out a big loop, but we weren’t happy with the time we had and the lack of beer wasn’t in the full loops favour.
And this is where we first started getting acquainted with the charming KZN drivers, stuck behind a line of cars I noticed the late Opel in front of me driving rather aggressively, but what scared me most and kept me behind him was the apparent lack of shock absorbers, every bump he hit the car bounced and bounced and bounced, how he drove that death trap I don’t know, but eventually he raced ahead, at the front of this queue, I overtook the bread truck slowing traffic down, when GingerBreadMan finally overtook the truck at 140, he was overtaken midway by another car.
Yes dirt riding just feels way safer. We had several other incidents the only one I care to mention was the ass the passed me on the right after I had stopped at a red robot, I always stop in the middle of the two lanes, if I hadn’t there, I probably wouldn’t be writing this report.
We made it to PMB around 5, it was starting to get dark and then we battled to find the venue, eventually with the location sent by a helpful fellow dog we found it, in the dark.
Tents were pitched, Beers were cold, fires were lit and we settled our weary bodies for a chilled evening.

Here is the loop we were supposed to do, the one at the top of day 2 is what we did, a nice bit cut out.

Day 3 – Chill time

This was pretty much a rest day for us, we still had a long trip back the next day, so while most of the dogs went on scenic outrides, or stayed behind and leaked oil in the parking lot, we decided to head off to the beach, no ways I was so close to it to not go there, and see some good friends while at it.
And after my really bad sleep the previous night I wasn’t in the mood for anything strenuous, I hate camping, blow up mattresses are the devils work, there is nothing worse to sleep on.

225km

We headed off to Umhlanga, we were going to meet EssBee and Mrs EssBee for lunch and some drinks as well. So off to the Umhlanga pier, filled with some great eye candy as well.

That evening we heard of the days happenings too, apparently one lucky biker got to meet a gorgeous blonde on top a mountain, a helicopter pilot nonetheless. I questioned the truth in this tale.

Day 4 – Pietermaritzburg to………

Sunday was winging it day, we were homeless today, no accommodation booked, but we knew we would find somewhere to sleep that evening, if all else failed we had tents, not that I wanted to use it. I think I did mention how I hate camping and how satan invented the blow up mattress. We also didn’t have to hear Schalk shouting for everyone to wake up in the morning anymore. Thanks Schalk, always lekker seeing you boet.
We packed up, had a nice big breakfast and bid fellow dogs farewell.
Onto the N3 and off at Cato Ridge towards the Valley of 1000 hills, unchartered territory for both of us, and were we in for a treat.
WOW!! If you have never been there, do yourself a favour and go, riding on top of the world, from one mountain peak to the next, the views are incredible.
Animals in this part of the world are also free, they are everywhere, goats, sheep, chickens, cows, the odd horse and of course the Mongoose who are always along the roads.
It was a warm morning starting around 14 degrees and went as high as 29, add to that humidty in some places and you know why KZN doesn’t know what winter is.

Very little tar in these parts, but I really don’t mind, people drive a lot worse on tar,  and there is less traffic on dirt. After on short stretch of tar we turned back onto another dirt road, and we could see it go off into the distance down into the valley below, twisting and winding through the mountains, it looked simple, but after actually getting into it we decided we needed to name this pass, it has no name documented, yet, we named it Pass 666, if you think Sani pass is the business, think again, forget Sani please, go ride this one, its all gradual and windy narrow roads along the mountain side but at one point things changed and that’s where Sani came to mind, very short tight steep switchbacks starting very high up, and winding down the mountain, not to the bottom but for a long way down, with huge drops off the sides, we crawled through this section but it was awesome, GingerBreadMan should have a video of this, as soon as I can get that from him I will edit it and post it.

We made a lot of stops along this pass, I couldn’t resist, the photo opportunities were just fantastic, but the photos still don’t do it justice.

The road eventually winded all the way to the river at the bottom, across the river and back up into the mountains on the other side, it was hot here, 29 Degrees and humid.

Mikie and Tristan, those roads are our local playground, we're in fact quite blasé about it.....come spend a weekend at my place, it's a mere stone's throw away. And yes, it is HOT in those valleys!!! You see what we mean about ballistic vests!!!

I was very thirsty again, My camel piss water wasn’t doing the trick anymore. And just then, like mannah from heaven……. Thulini Tea room popped up around the next corner, its Sunday, I don’t want tea, I darted inside, THEY HAD BEER!!!!
I promise you now, this was the best tasting beer of the whole entire trip!!!

After what felt like seconds it was gone but we felt better and it was time to ride again, next stop Kranskop. The days dirt roads were just about finished, just a short section from Thulini and it was tar from there. We had to go visit another local in the area.

Just after Kranskop the first sign came up that we were close
(https://41.media.tumblr.com/f464952a0c01872dce060137337c4a59/tumblr_nt7mx0YjLC1tfnbvho4_1280.jpg)

The sign is a little blurry, but it says “Welcome to Nkandla”
Yes we were going to visit the big cheese himself, showerhead.
Ok maybe not visit him, but at least see what this elaborate mansion teat cost R260Million or something to that effect.

We were told that you cant miss it, go through Kranskop and you will eventually see it, we rounded many bends and started wondering if it was actually somewhere near the main road, but then over a blind rise and there I saw it, a bunch of chalet looking houses all in a row, like a little resort, Thatch Chalets, “There is is!” I  said, GingerBreadMan said, “Kak, it wont be here right next to the road”
So I asked a local lady standing next to the road, where is JZ’s house, she just pointed across the road, “Right there”. I was right, this was the world famous Nkandla.

Really?? That’s it?? It really isn’t impressive at all. So we decided not to pop in for a drink with the big cheese himself.

The roads from there are awesome, the route took us through the Nkandla forest, Oh My word, that’s a nice road, even GingerBreadMan who is not a tar riding fan had a blast getting his knee down around those twisties, he got so into it he almost soiled his Klim pant when his toe scraped the road around one corner, picturesque and just nice fast corners.
Soopabikers would love this road.
We were enjoying it all so much we forgot to stop and take photos.

I cant remember if that section was before or after this stop we made.

We were nearing Vryheid, this might be our overnight stop at just over 400km for the day so far.

Still one or two more sections of tar, short sections through some forests, but these roads are maintained differently, if any of you went to the Bash at highover you should know the type, almost paved with rocks, the rocks seem to have been rolled into the road, not bad grip BUT, not all rocks are sunken properly into the ground, here and there is a straggler that’s poking out just ready to make your rim smile, just as Oros found out, hearing a scream over my headset confirmed it, the Ginger hit one, but we didn’t stop, just carried on, he did complain a lot about some headshake after that though.
Crossing the White Umfolozi river

I grew up in Vryheid and still remember the Nkandla Forest road back then.... gravel through the dense trees.... travelling with my parents in our Opel Record station wagon.

So when I did a trip with Gerrie to all the hot water springs a while ago, this road was on the agenda.

BIG SURPRISE... tar and twisties like you cannot believe.

Bit of a disappointment at first but then the SUPABIKE gremlin took over and I enjoyed it. :ricky:

I grew up in Vryheid and still remember the Nkandla Forest road back then.... gravel through the dense trees.... travelling with my parents in our Opel Record station wagon.

So when I did a trip with Gerrie to all the hot water springs a while ago, this road was on the agenda.

BIG SURPRISE... tar and twisties like you cannot believe.

Bit of a disappointment at first but then the SUPABIKE gremlin took over and I enjoyed it. :ricky:

We spend a night at Lilani... missed the next one and on the way to ...Lilani... I think it was called did this section.
Ride report on that OTHER forum. :imaposer:

Was that after you left High Over???  ;)

Exactly, I almost wanted to go back and do it again, it really was fun

Finally we reached Vryheid, it’s a bigger town than I expected with B&B’s and guesthouses all over the place, should we stay or push on to Utrecht. We fuelled up and decided, just another 58Km to Utrecht we might as well push on, it will mean less travelling on the Monday. Theres a little “Ghost town” near Vryheid called Hlobane, we were supposed to go past there, but once again we hadn’t eaten and were tired and time was against us so we decided to cut that section out.
On to Utrecht our overnight home. The GPS said there is The Grand Hotel Utrech there, perfect, I love the small town hotels, our Lesotho trip took us to the Kestel Hotel, that place was awesome, this trip had already taken us to the Memel hotel, loved it, another small town hotel is just what we need, check in drink with the locals at the bar, perfect. We got there as the sun was about to set, it was nothing like Vryheid, a one horse town, not like Weenen, but not far off, no B&B’s and guest houses all over the place, oh oh, where are we going to stay??

This is the Grand hotel Utrecht

It looked like a set from the movie “The Hostel”, we were not staying there, far too dodgy, besides it doesn’t look like its still trading

One of the only guest houses in town was fully booked but they referred us to the Caravan park, they have chalets too, they did, a nice little cabin next to the dam, but they didn’t have food, luckily the take aways at the local petrol station had burgers and slap chips. All sorted and we checked in after dark.

500km for the day.

Day 5: The road home back to the big smoke
Monday morning we woke up and could finally see where we stayed over. If we didn’t know we were in Utrecht, we could have mistaken the place for a watering hole in the Kruger park. The elephants should be arriving soon…..

We also now got to check what was causing the headshake on Oros, OUCH!!

We had some hidden attractions to still see, the old deserted Charleston train tunnels, I had them on the GPS, should be easy to find. We hit the road by 07:30.
Down to the N11 and off onto dirt towards the first tunnel and we hit a farm gate, then another farm gate, then another….. it’s not looking good to getting to these tunnels. We met a lady and her daughter at one of the farms and asked her about the tunnels and where they are, she pointed it out and explained how to get there, but we had to cross through a farm which wasn’t closed off yet.

They had this 2 week old goat, the cutest thing

I think that might be Wooly Bugger in the background

So headed off to the recommended route and through the farm gate, hoping no farmer was going to come out and shoot us, but we stayed off his lands. We ended up in the middle of some tree plantation, tricky riding over all the cuttings all over the floor and into a dead end, so back down another route, another dead end, then through a little tunnel under a bridge and onto some open grazing lands, we rode around in circles for an hour and a half, eventually after riding over ploughed fire breaks and really rough terrain, we conceded defeat, we can’t get to the first tunnel, not from this side at least, so we back tracked, back across the grazing lands and towards the little bridge, when the Ginger decides to see what’s on the bridge, lo and behold, at the end of the bridge, a Damn tunnel!!!
We couldn’t see it from below with all the trees around it, finally, now we go through this tunnel and follow the old rail line to the second tunnel, Wrong!

The date above the tunnel in case you can’t see it is 1936, probably about the same age as the Legendary IceCreamMan.

We entered and rode through to the other side, only to find a locked farm gate. Yes, a dead end.
We back tracked again, back through the farm and onto the N11 again towards the other tunnel.
Back on the N11 we tried to find routes off the main road towards the old line, after some trial and error we found it. We were back on track, Literally, those stones are not fun to ride on, much like marbles but a little more stable, but you always feel like you’re going to wash out. After a good distance we had just about reached the tunnel entrance, but we had an obstacle, a fallen tree, that was growing across the road. I stopped in front of it, the branches still smallish so I figured even without a machete I could break them to clear a path, I managed with some but a few remained very low down, low enough to guide the mighty pig over them and onwards to the tunnel, GingerBreadMan thought I was being really confident, but it was a few small branches, they stood no chance against the mighty pig. I climbed back on revved the pig and dropped the clutch, the tree was no challenge…….. OMG the tree attacked me, front wheel got airborne and I got floored, down to the right, I am ashamed to say a little tree dropped my pig, claiming a spot light and handguard, I was laughing so much I couldn’t pick her up again, Ginger had to come help me, you know a bike it yours when you can bin it, scratch it some more, break some minor parts and laugh about it, this is why I have this bike and not a Ducati 1198, The screen is now almost even, scratches on the left from Lesotho and scratches on the right from the Charleston tunnel Keeper.

I was forced to use KTM duct tape to mend my floppy spot light. Oh the shame!!
If anyone has a handguard to sponsor I will gladly take it. Pratley steel is holding the things on for now.
One day when I sell this bike I know you will all back me up by saying, “”Lady rider, never been off road”
We traversed the tunnel, it was wet right through and dark but yet, another tunnel. Been there done that

From there we moved onto Volksrust, another small town, bigger than Utrecht though, and they have fuel and a Wimpy, so my almost dry tank got refilled and so did our tummy’s.
From there we headed home, we still debated on whether we should slab it on tar, or stick to the plotted route and take farm roads all the way back, we were so into the dirt and I was very much passed my fears and picking up speed on the dirt now. So we stuck to the farm roads. Through Standerton and out the other side down the worst road in SA, potholes bigger than my bike, some of them could have swallowed the pig whole.
This was one of the smaller ones

And we winded our way back through the Free State back to Gauteng.

I really enjoyed these roads, both of us at good speeds, side by side smiling all the way home

We did 441Km back on the last day making the entire trip just over 2000km, The KTM will say it was a lot over, but we know KTM riders like to exaggerate.

A lot of this route went through  a lot of the old Battlefields, we didn’t have time but there are many battle sites and memorials and monuments along this route, I will be back, historic sites are always a nice thing to see for me. Preferably out of the rainy season, most of these roads look like they could be treacherous in the wet.

Man I love riding our beautiful country.
