Here are some pics from the night! Not nearly as good as Teebags pics, but you get the idea.

I met Jens in early 2015 buying some parts from his bike for mine, (after I had a small crash off-road) he was kind enough to to invite me to the unveiling!

Cannot wait to see what #hydedesigns are going to produce in the future.

Looks like a backyard cafe racer attempt gone wrong.

What is does manage is making the standard 650x look really good.

Little bit like unveiling your new ugly mother in law.

Just my opinion of course.

So long as there are motorbikes some guys will customise them. Some creations are practical, some beautiful, and some outlandish...............

Well saying I don't like it is one thing saying why I don't like it IMHO is a different story:

The bike very obviously is a "design study" and not intended for road use. (No chain guard, no flickers, no number plate bracket). This does not do it for me. A bike which you can't ride ??? The very short tail and the rather long swing arm make it look almost like some hill climb tool.

The Lockheed Nighthawk look IMHO is past it's expiry date and has been used ad nauseam. Good grief even the design donating stealth fighters have been retired for almost eight years now.

If you d the stealth look I would like to see something far less conventional in instrumentation and headlight. The round headlight and the instrument panel don't match the stealth fighter design of the tank / seat / tail.

The low exhaust with the lunch box muffler: No thanks. Not my thing. I would have retained the OEM routing of the header and fitted a 3/4 height trumpet. Maybe something with a stealth fighter edgy outer shell to match the other body work.

It's a bit difficult to tell from the pictures but the seating position looks a bit awkward (slightly back from the XCh, lower bars). This bike definitely could do with rear sets.

personally would like to see a wheel hugger and a chain guard ? understanding my mechinical skill only rivals a Chimpanzee sticking a twig in a hole to catch ants?

For a change I fully agree with you.

There is nothing sexy about a 650 Rotax motor. Nothing.

So the heart of the project is rotten from the get-go.

Bikes are supposed to be cute, sexy, or scary.

This one is none of the above.

Nothing sexy about the 650 Rotax motor. Except that it's unbreakable, reliable, performs well and is frugal with fuel.
I think I'd rather have that than sexy.

Bwhahahahahahahaha!

Wait I'll take some pictures today.

I also have missed the "performs well" part to date. The F  / ST were phlegmatic. The GS / GSD felt as if they had a bungee cord for a throttle cable. The G was an improvement apparently due to improved fuel management. Still nothing that blows my hair back.

Okay, I'll revise my wording, since anyone especially someone who works on lots of engines can give examples of blow ups whatever the particular brand.
And any engine can be destroyed if the rider is abusive enough, or the owner neglects such essentials as oil, filters, coolant or warning lights.

So, instead of unbreakable, read  bloody tough, and as for performs well perhaps that's subjective, but to me, cruising with 145 on the clock, then cracking the throttle and feeling not just a creep, but a genuine surge, I reckon aint bad for a single cylinder bike.

Having owned a couple of bikes with the Rotax motor I know there are a couple of issues like the water pump, which I've not yet needed to tackle and isn't disastrous if they run 40 - 50,000 km, overall I remain impressed even if I am easily impressed.

It will be close!  :ricky:

G650X
144kg
39kw
60Nm @5200
Power to weight 0.1647417925

DR650
147kg
32/34kw depending on what model.
54Nm @4600
Power to weight 0.1324141252

I know which one stops faster though, and it's not Japanese

Just for interest sake, here is the KTM 690 specs.

138.5kg
46kw
65Nm @ 6550 rpm
Power to weight 0.2013004305

For those basing the Octavia's engine choice power wise on riding a F650 Rotax....I've ridden some a F650GS and 2x Setao's and I've ridden my XChallenge and XCountry and I will tell you that they are NOTHING like a F650. It's got 45KG's-50kg's and + 3KW on it.  And I'm guessing this build is even lighter.
The 650 Rotax is nice and torquey, smoother than most Thumpers, frugal and as have been said, propel you forward with a twist of the wrist at over the limit speeds with a slight twist of the wrist (On the XChallenge/XMoto/XCountry) and relatively reliable. <--- all sexy characteristics in my eyes ;)

Literally the only other road legal 650 Thumper that beats those figures is the KTM 690 and that technically closer to a 700 than a 650.
What more do you want from a Thumper engine?

So other than a basing it of a KTM 690 - what thumper engine that's more exciting would you have chosen to base a street bike on?

I think Hyde Designed deserves more credit for this. Hell It's really something unique and the guy is proud of it. What I wont give to be so creative and tallented when it comes to bikes. I hardly know how to torque a bolt.

I have nothing against the 650 Rattex engine, they are very good. This is also not what I like, the coffin tank I thought died in the 60's.

BUT...the guy built this, and displayed it to our cruel eyes, and for that I give him credit.

I hope the builder can take criticism well.

When one unveils something in such grandiose fashion it's not a garuantee that everyone or even anyone might like it. The custom bike scene is riddled with good and bad creations and giving scope for a multitude of opinions. Even opinions is just what they are..  Opinions.  Personally I find that bike hideous.... For another it's his reason for a hard-on......but unlike conventional art... One would imagine custom bikes should have a fairly equal dose of form & function..... Of which unfortunately I see little of both in this bike..........but then again....just my opinion

Naturally, everyone's welcome to their opinion. How you express that opinion, well...

Example, there's a difference between Dux saying "I don't like the styling", and saying "this bike does for design what Hitler did for peace"

Just like there's a difference between me saying "Y'all need to open your minds a bit", and saying "Y'all wouldn't know good design if it hit you in the face"  ;)

But hey... hooray the internet!  :pot:  :lamer: :bueller:

Geez, this thread reminds me of why I don't frequent web forums any more. It's very easy to sit behind a keyboard, make snide comments and criticise. You know what's not easy? Building a stunning, innovative custom motorcycle like this. Y'all need to open your minds a little bit...

If you present your bike in public you open yourself to criticism. It's like: "Hey, look what I 've build, tell me what you think about it!"

It's not that this bike was spied out through a broken window of a gloomy private parking garage or with a one metre focal length lens from half a kilometre away.

What's wrong with me telling you that I think an Aprilia Moto 6.5 looks quite cool. Especially the one with the non OEM Daimler Benz Königsblau metallic paint job. The silver & orange makes it look like a domestic appliance. Sorry Philippe.
Or a VMAX. Unbeatable.
But let me also tell you I think a Scarver is a two wheeled design atrocity and a Ducati Diavel is IMHO nothing short of being a butt ugly sled.

Oh boohoo, were somebody's feelings hurt?

Remember folks the internet is NOT a toy.

No-one's feelings were hurt (in fact, I saw Jens yesterday and he had quite a chuckle over this). I just think the criticism is unnecessarily harsh.

LeCap, I won't argue with you there. The Scarver still gives me shivers. As for the Diavel, it's certainly a polarising look. Ride it though, it will blow your mind.

Yah the first quote is the politically correct Fake book proof wishi washi version of the latter.

Dux very clearly stated this as his personal opinion. Just like me. Or anyone else posting whatsoever on the forum.
Without having to add a silly disclaimer that: "Whatever I say does not constitute infallible truth but my mere and low, ill informed opinion."

I found Dux's comment quite funny. Regardless if I agree or not.

With regards to the Diavel: There are just way too many bikes out there which would blow my mind riding them. But I don't have to walk around them for half an hour desperately trying to find an angle from which they look pretty and in proportion :-\

Maybe this would be better off in "garage projects" where people are more accustomed to bikes being worked on and sometimes even modified  :pot:

I suspect you may be right...

Perhaps the builder should apologize for assaulting our exquisitely sensitive and tasteful senses with this.....uh...thing. :peepwall:

Righty-o then! Having art and metalwork as matric subjects, and passing both, as well as having modified and played around with some styling cues on some of the bikes I've had in my life, one of the rules I've stuck to is "form follows function". Now I've seen over the years that some in their effort to create something "new" have gone against this, and been quite radical in their approach (is this why anarchists are sometimes viewed as being quite "popular") - unfortunately it is very seldom that these designs/creations stand the test of time, and become dated.

Personally, I've never liked a coffin plonked on a bike - remember the Kawasaki Z1-R? That was a production bike that had quite a following and it's tank was in the shape of a coffin, but there were some that seemed to like it. Where am I going with this? Quite easy, you could ride the Kawasaki quite comfortably. In Octavia's case, it is not so, so as a design exercise it might work and someone will pay a lot of money for it, which I feel was the point of the grandiose unveiling and the build, but I need to ask "Will it stand the test of time? Where will it be in say 20 years time?"

This is my opinion, and you really don't have to agree with it if you don't want to.

The jury is/are still out.

In fact they've been out for 4 pages now, possibly they've packed up and gone home and I've lost interest in their verdict anyway.
