I'm also new to it but look up GXCC on Facebook, used to be GOC. If you only end up doing one race (in the WOW class), it will cost as little as 600 rand for annual club fee, entry and license

Really affordable and hassle free for people wanting to try it out

I'm gonna do them but will miss the first race - gonna be doing a Mountain Madalas ride that weekend.

Which, incidentally, is something you should try, if the Amageza and Baja is out of reach.  There's 2 more Madalas rides this year, so no excuse  >:D

I'm expecting the GXCC to be very good this year  :thumleft:

Thanks Cracker. I need to do a lot of training before attempting anything with the word "mountain" in it. I've done a grand total of one proper off-road ride in the last 14 months so I am going to kak off big time

I have my club membership and paid for my licence. Just waiting my number now

I take it the actual race entries will open on the website in due time? Anyone know? I am still waiting for my race licence  :patch:

Your license is done online, you should get a printed copy immediately - no cards anymore. Just an A4 sheet that should last about 5 minutes in your wallet.

After getting your license number, you'll need to phone Carmen at MSA directly, she'll give you an actual race number.

Race entries - used to be 2 weeks before an event.

BTW, I joined GXCC as my club for the year - should hopefully be sent all the important info.

I had a training session with Louwrens Mahoney (who's taken over the GOC's) this past December. He told me he wants to hopefully make the track more twisty to keep the speeds down a bit, but also not too technically challenging. I guess we'll just have to see for ourselves...

I don't mind the races being a little open. Riding fitness is nowhere near good enough for tough riding. We'll see how it goes and maybe enter an enduro or two later in the year. Bazinga is riding the crf450r so tech wouldn't suite him
Title: Re: 2016 GXCC
Post by: Cracker on January 21, 2016, 01:51:13 pm
The tech is not opfok tech like the Roof - just means there's some rocks to throw you off the bike, some trees to crash into, some water to drown in and some mud and sand to throw you into some razor wire.

And Bazinga has just the right weapon to f--k himself up properly - no broken fingers here, mate :thumleft:

Fearless counts more than fitness - you can't do push-ups with a broken neck, anyway  ::)

The GOC's used to scare me, and I was on a TTR! If it's going to go wrong at those speeds it will hurt.

Not sure how you balance the risk/reward ratio Rob? No enduros for you rather?

I am happy to announce that I am one of two ladies which have been picked to ride with the Mc Larens Racing team for the GXCC season this year. My race number is C456, nice and easy to remember! The Mc Larens team also does some great photography at the events so give their facebook page a like to get the newest updates:

Trust me, when you finish that first race, 6 beers aren't gonna cut it  :thumleft:

But well done, I'm not too happy missing the first race - you'll have to tell us all about it.

That feeling you get on the start line - priceless!!

Can't wait till Saturday! So excited :D

I did a nice lil practice race in Naboomspruit just the other weekend. 4 laps of 45km. Realized how important fitness is when you are racing! Hope this weekend is just as much fun.

LEKKER !
Hoe het jou wedren toe verloop ?

MINXY , well done ! , 6 laps completed in 3 hours then plus the 1 lap , WELL DONE ! MINXY !

Now , with the results confusion , where can we see the results ? I think it will take a while to sort it out.
GXCC's website is offline , eish !  ( as for now )

Thank you! :) It went much better than I expected. We still stayed on to wait for the results, but they announced there was problems with the time keeping system and they will only be able to give us the results later during the week (hopefully). The prize giving will be held together with the next GXCC event.

Track was a lot easier than I expected which suits proper unfit overweight hungover weekend worriors like me but I suspect the competitve okes might want something a little more challenging. The twisties were good fun and there were only about 4 or 5 short straight flat out sections. The start took a while but that's hopefully just teething problems. All and all a great day out

To be honest, Minxy, it did not look like fun in your vid - way too many riders in the same vicinity, at high speeds.

The start has the potential to put a lot of people in hospital - I hope they sort it - the dust is gonna get bad soon  :thumleft:

Anyways, you had a goodie and passed quite a few people (lots!!), which is always lekker  :thumleft:

They say 300+ riders were there - I hope so - it was dying a slow death last year.

See you out there, someday ......................  ;)

My riding buddies have all pulled out this year due to injuries they got last year, apparently - which really means they're too old or just plain scared.

No, I didn't.  :(

Too many negatives for me - a towing vehicle that's bust, rriding buddies busted up, not keen to race alone, gotta wake up way too early to be there by 6H30, laps are way too short AND I saw the length of the registration queue on TV. blah, blah, blah .............

We'll see next time - maybe I'm getting too old and picky but the negatives outweighed the positives on this one.  ::)

But you guys enjoy it, set the berserker free and see how fast you can really go.

Was a good race, hats off to Lourens for putting together a track in 2 days after the last one got washed away.  It was a bit too fast for my liking but the terrain was awesome. Nice thick sand with lots of grip.

Cracker nice seeing you again  :thumleft:

Bazinga and I both rode to the chequered flag. The whole team was surprised I made it considering I still don't do any form of exercise nor have I ridden my bike in two months  :imaposer:

Track was a bit fast for my liking and the marking wasn't superb but still a great day out. My body is taking strain today but it was well worth it. Bazinga and I both managed 4 laps although he was quite a bit faster than me. 14th and 26th in the WOW class respectively.

Nice going Dwerg & Bazinga!

What is the WOW class by the way? n00b question - sorry ::)

It's kinda like the "Weekend Warrior" class. Basically they just make the registration and race license process easier for this group, as not everyone wants to buy a full race license with MSA to participate in an entire season of racing.
Here's some more info:

Well - if I thought I was getting fitter - I was wrong!! It seems watching WSBK for 2 days doesn't help any more than watching for 1 day, it seems.  ;D

I managed 3 laps but thought a 4th would put me in hospital  :o :o  I was getting tired and erratic towards the end of the 3rd so called it.

It was a very fast race, no tech to speak of and lots of mielie fields. A few lurkers had me wide-eyed on the first lap and luckily I remembered them later. Next time I'll drink my beer before the race ...............

Dust wasn't really a factor coz of recent rains but when those fast fekkers came past, the roost hurt!!!

A good day out, though - I'm looking forward to the next one at Lekoa  :thumleft:

 ---------------------------------------------

P.S. Note to self - Watch as much racing as possible for the next month, gotta improve the fitness

Did you guys stop at the road crossing?

I didn't and only realised after the race, on the way home, that there was one  :o

Didn't get flagged but no-one I saw stopped either.

When I was getting dressed a lot of you early starters were speeding in the pits - we got warned at race briefing - so maybe that's the green flag?

I did see the road crossing but unless marked as a stop they can't really penalise you.

Which class did you ride? I really hope they do start taking the guys on for the pit speeding. Also way too many pedestrains in the pit lane

Advice please guys.  I need to get some serious training in for next years Baja and this seems like a great way to get back into the 'racing' scene - warrior class.

Can I do this with my rally bike, giving that's all I have at the moment, and I don't want to strip all kit off as I want to get used to the setup?
Title: Re: 2016 GXCC

The race can easily be done on your bike yes. Whether you uneccessarily want to risk damaging expensive rally equipment is up to you

Given I have only done one event, but I would say it is definitely doable on a rally bike. I could do it on my 990, would just be a lot slower.

Thanks Dwerg, Bud500,

Damaging the equipment is obviously a major concern, but I don't know how to otherwise get used to the set up.  My pace will be slow and cautious.

ktmkobus, you should enter the WOW class this year as it's cheaper and full, plenty guys to race with. All levels of experience.

You will probably need a club license next year for the Baja, so won't be riding WOW then.

I race in the masters club class but have to put up with the regional and national riders at GXCC, so my results are always kak.  :imaposer: :imaposer: Our top national riders are intimidatingly fast, in all classes.

Personally, I wouldn't race GXCC with a full Rallye setup, you ARE going to damage the bike. At the least, remove the fairing and equipment on the front. Fuel tanks, handlebar switches, etc can stay.

And slow and cautious ain't gonna happen - you can't practice racing by doing that.

Take your full Rallye bike on the Family Adventures rides. Identical terrain to the GXCC's, same distances but you ride at your own pace. Not as well marked, maybe, so you gotta think about navigation and dangers. Good training for racing snakes and kids alike.

Thanks Dwerg, Bud500,

Damaging the equipment is obviously a major concern, but I don't know how to otherwise get used to the set up.  My pace will be slow and cautious.

Heck, you could do gxcc easily on the rally bike, like Bud said, you could do it on a 990 if you wanted to, but wrecking your tanks/fairing/nav equipment won't be any fun, especially with baja just around the corner and this can very realistically happen, even if you take it easy.
Best would be to ride it on another bike, even if it's an old/cheap bike, just for the exposure/experience. You can still apply the skills you learn from racing gxcc, to racing in the baja rally, no matter what the bike.
You can always rather take your rally bike to a place like rhinopark and train on the mx track, or just go on their out rides, at least it's a slightly more controlled environment and you can get a feel for your bike. I found training at rhinopark great for amageza as they have loads more sand then most places nearby :)
