Title: New GS R1200 Advice

Good Day Everyone

I am playing with the idea to add a GS to my bikes, I currently have a KTM 990S, and will keep it...

Before the KTM I had a GS (2008)  but lost track of the current info on the GS.

My question is, I see there are a couple of model ranges and options in the new LC, can anyone please share their views on these and benifits of either option?

Hi there.

The two main lc models are the normal gs lc and the gs adventure lc. Then there are a few different options of the normal gs lc.

1. Gs adventure
Bigger fuel tank, bigger windscreen, equiped standard with crash bars and pannier racks. Heavier than normal gs. Awesome bike.

2. Normal gs
Smaller tank (20L).  Different packages available wrt riding modes, cruise control, esa suspension. Awesome bike, cheaper than adventure model.

2.2. Normal gs trophy edition
Mechanically the same as normal gs, no esa suspension, only 2 riding modes. No led headlight. Awesome bike, cheapest option. ( i just bought mine, love it)

CP, any particular reason you went for the trophy? I see you have a KTM 950... :)

I had a 2007 GSA before I had the Super Enduro and the only reason I sold it was because I needed a deposit on a house and we just had our second child so my wife wasn't going to pillion for a while. So I kept the SE until she was ready to get back on the back of the bike again.

I decided on the Trophy because although the "bells & whistles" are nice, I don't think I need them. Once you've got the bike setup right (like I had with my 07 GSA) you just get on and ride. And of course there's less that can break when bundu bashing on the Trophy price tag is nice, so I can add my "own" extras and have cash left over.

My dealer in Cape Town said keyless go wasn't an option they approved of and wouldn't offer it

I copied this from their January 2016 price list.

It is a R3500 option. Not something I would spend money on or recommend.

If your keys fall out your pocket where you stopped to take photos, etc. the bike will start if you take off again, but only when you reach your destination you may realize you lost your keys.

Quite similar to what they told me, they also mentioned that BMW on call attend to a lot of similar happenings

I do not have the time to go into details but I have spent many many hours contemplating this. I am selling my 1190R and getting myself a 1200GS Trophy. I can add necessary bits..crash bars and adventure pannier frames to protect the bike and then I will look for a newish low mileage 690R.

Me too, there is a 530 exc for sale on the forum, not sure how much hassle to make it road legal though
