Met die erge droogte hier by ons het ons baie van die omliggende veld diertjies wat in die woon gebiede inkom om kos te soek. Hier by my kom gereeld nou tarentale.

 :thumleft: Cape Grysbok. Beauts

Years ago my dogs treed a large leguaan and as we were on our way for a long weekend, I called them off thinking that the leguaan would use the respite to make his escape.

Three days later we returned and I found the poor bugger still up the tree and seemingly unable to climb down. Cost me to climb up, grab it by the tail and lower it to a more accessible branch. Then some more of the same until we were low enough and boy, did it hurtle down the slope into the bush.

Yes, Cape Grysbok! Its also part of the "tiny ten"! Others are the blue duiker, grys duiker, red duiker, suni, oribi, steenbok, etc don't know the rest.

Interesting the tiny wildlife..

Not sure about the waterbuck but we've had some minor incidents with zebra and wildebeest mock charging when our dogs came too close to young animals

Interesant is dat die verkleurmannetjie se tong ongeveer twee keer so lank soos sy lyf is!...

Barely possible calling them "wildlife", they are beyond tame, rather lame. The golf course being part of my greater backyard they are in my "yard", these don't even blink an eye and one has to play over and around them, as you can see where the ball lies. The many springbuck are a different story. One cannot get within 100 meters of them.

And after all this time and accepting that she must be "infertile" Appeltjie had "Stronkie :ricky:" and seems "Mooi Ram" is the father as he is always with them and Stronkie even thought he might also be the "food supplier" but quickly realized his mistake. (Stronkie if not sure what it means is the core of the apple that you normally throw away) So precious to see this and she "moves" him every day all around the proximity of the house to keep him safe.

Etienne indien julle eendag weer bul koop kry n Charolais.

Fairly low, Chris but not known to be found in our area. More inland in the indigenous forests. This fellow is definitely out of his range and must have been chased out the troop.

Farmers up the road in Oribi and Paddock areas lose quite a lot of crops to them.

We have way too many vervets in Umtentweni.

I suspect the proliferation of Hadidas has a lot to do with it. Before the '80s there were no Hadidas in the Western Cape, and since then the chameleon population has declined drastically. Maybe they catch the babies?

Wouldn't be their natural prey. They feed on the ground and target earthworms, grubs, crickets etc.

Grey-headed bushshrikes, wood-hoopoes, kingfishers, hornbills, harrier hawks, buzzards, kites would target them. Snakes, monitor lizards, mongooses, civets and genets as well.

Don't forget the devastation to smaller wildlife caused by domestic cats.

I suspect the proliferation of Hadidas has a lot to do with it. Before the '80s there were no Hadidas in the Western Cape, and since then the chameleon population has declined drastically. Maybe they catch the babies?

as much as I despise hadedas, I doubt it

Also don't think so, other birds of prey maybe. Also loss of their natural habitat. Hedges replaced with walls.
:thumleft:  that would be my guess - they can't move freely without exposing themselves

I have noticed that the spiders seem to be out in serious force this year.  Where are you?  Wonder what has caused this super activity?

How crazy is this? The first time in 5 years we have the same type spinning huge webs across the bush path. Has little fethers on his joints.

In my garden, there are a lot of caterpillars this year. Some I have never seen before, like the orange fellow feasting on the Spekboom. Also plenty of the very small varieties, maybe not more than 2 or 3mm in length.

Checked on some of my plants yesterday and almost beekakked myself when I saw the guys that took up residence in one of the plants

Absolutely massive caterpillars, which will eventually turn into a Deaths-Head Hawkmoth.....

I just googled Deaths Head hawkmoth. Fascinating creatures with a wing span of up to 13cm. What is even more interesting is hat they raid bee hives to eat the honey and they give of a scent mimicking the bees so that they don't get seen as in intruder and don't get stung to death.

I read that they can reach up to 20cm wingspan, also that they might be immune to Bee stings

Are those small brown stripey ones not the culprits that screw up your lawn?
Also found some in the pool this weekend.

Definitely been a bumper seasson, Jurie. Possibly why we've seen a variety of cuckoos and cuckoo-shrikes.

I am in Broederstroom near Hartbeespoort dam.

The webs are seriously strong. I walked into one on Sunday morning hiking. And then the dance began to find the spider first!

Saw these critters in my veg garden under the table.
Daddy long legs all of them. Lots of spiders this year.
1at pic - individual
2nd pic - lots otgether. Interesting thing - when you get too close to them they start bouncing like being on a trampoline. Difficult to focus the camera on them.

Found this in my house earlier. My son wants to keep it as a pet.

Does anyone know anybody that has died from a scorpion sting.

(My) General rule on those are, they kill with the biggest end.

ie - small pinchers vs large, thick tail - they kill with the stinger and should be avoided.
Large pinchers vs thin tail - kills with the pinchers. Still hurts like a MF, when yo do get stinged, though.

Hi Rooies,

I am in Wingate Park, Pretoria. Just a normal residential suburb, although reasonably close to the Rietvlei dam and Nature Reserve

There were the Chinese School now stands in Wingate, used to be a nice piece of inner city/suburb bushveld.
We saw some unusual goggas and animals roaming there.

Looking at the history, I see the Lone Ranger Samango was last in our garden during December.

Stopped over to shout at the dogs who were quite eager to make contact.
