Title: 21" front wheel on a GSA LC?
Post by: Noneking on May 26, 2016, 02:02:54 pm
So I messed up my new GSA's front wheel last weekend when I hit a protruding rock at 140km/h on dirt.

My questions:
  - Seeing as my insurance will pay out, what are the costs of this mod compared to replacing OEM?
  - How does it influence tar handling on the telelever suspension.
  - Does it influence waranty on this brand new bike?
  - Any other considerations?

How does it influence tar handling on the telelever suspension.

It does not like to be flicked around in tight corners in a tar mountainpass. It tends to want to go to the outside.
If you can go for it.
Send Woodyswheels in Denver Colorado a mail ask if it has been done.

I am looking very closely at those WWheels 21" fronts and they do not look tubeless.
Methinks it would be better buying a tubeless rim and spokes from BM and have the lot laced together.

Silver PD 100 rim and spokes about R6500 from bm dink ek.

AFAIK, BMW no longer sells the R80/R100 GSPD tubeless rim - only a complete wheel.   :-\
I suggest you look on e-Bay for a used one.

I guess the change is to give you better handling on dirt (and has little to do with what happened)?  I think if you hit a protruding rock at 140, it does not matter what wheel you have, it may have the same result.

Those bigger wheels on the bikes remind me of the old scrambler days.  And I also like the look without the front fender.  Come to think of it, the beak is a remnant of the old fixed fender.  Nowadays we have a beak and a fender  ???.

But sorry to read about your incident, Noneking.  I hope you were ok?  Was it a loud bang?

Copernicus yes, because I ride mostly dirt I thought that my misfortune could be seen as the ideal time to do the mod.  The rock that I hit at speed would've damaged most I think. My front wheel was at 2.6 bar because I know that road well and was aware of several areas where rocks protrude from the hard dirt surface.

I was at the back of the group, riding in my friends' dust with the winter sun in the West, directly in front of me. Pressure dropped to 0.9 immediately after I hit the rock and was sitting at 0,6 when we arrived at camp. Luckily bike stayed perfectly stable and there was no damage to my underpants!

I collected my new,. (to me) Trophy last Saturday and was talking to my old boss Shane from Donfords getting some inside info and he said that they are replacing quite a few rim's on LC's! I don't think that it's because they are week but probably because we are riding them a little harder than we should. My 2c

Looking at the conversion done in this link, it seems like the only real issue is the brake line. Does seem like big deal to overcome. What do you guys think?

Pics from that thread.

Die rede sal iets soos lugvloeibelemmering of so iets wees. :P

Was vandag by BMW, geen verrassings, ek gaan my warranty void as ek so iets aanpak. Sal seker stupid wees? So lyk of ek vir eers maar by die 19" OEM wiel bly

I suppose it will be difficult to quantify the change in it's behaviour after the 21" front has been fitted, but what do you estimate the % change would be?

Curvy tar?
Gravel highways?
Sand?
Technical, rocky?
