Title: Newbie Ride Guateng 21/06/08 Report:
Post by: blazes on June 21, 2008, 07:43:28 pm
Well I Never expected the turn out that came for the newbie ride :o Broke our previous record by at least half a dozen. Malgat counted 26 motorycles.I am not even going to start to mention each and everyone who came. I could only count till ten with my gloves off and i was definately not going to take my Boots off ;) The WD's who came along as in the past were a SUPER group some with pillion's and fortunately without attitudes. The group who came from the west and east rand had some rain on the way up. We on the otherhand would have enjoyed some rain to settle some of the dust. Thank's to Ryperd and Gunda for sweeping as well as for Malgat who was able to get the riders together for a briefing with his Booming voice  ;DWe did a short trip on mostly dirt to Cullinan and had a Brunch and socialized. Was Super to meet You All Old WD's and new. After brunch and just chilling most left back home in different directions. Four of us carried on to do a additional 230km of  ;D ;D That my friend's is another story----Watch this space. To The Wd's-----Well done you all did very well and was nice to see some who have regained their confidence again. Here are some pic's of the outing. Sometimes pictures can say more than word's can  -----Enjoy. First pic looked more like a WD Bash ;D

Thanks for putting together a great day blazes.

Just knew it was going to be a great day from the feeling I got when I was at the N14 / R511 enjoying some good Sasol coffee and a muffin and this whole posse of five bikes, headed by Lourens and Mrs kitted in nifty orange, the mellow yellow rainsuited Munros, and the schweet F800 with Malibu atop come over the rise.

Looked awesome.

From there it got better. Lekka dirty wiggle-waggle to cullinan. I soon realized Ryperd was more competant a sweeper than I would ever be, handed over to him, and joined the mid-pack for most of the ride.

After Cullinan headed off, mostly in the wrong direction since my big GPS is bust, to the Solstice Festival of Micro Brewers for a Pickled Pig Porter with Malgat & Mrs and a long and involved chat with a charming lady who has invented a device to allow ladies to pee while standing that she says is a must for lady riders.

I promised her I would create a thread here on the forum and I always do what I am told.

Found a pub to watch the rugby. Talked bikes and saw no rugby worth watching and got home just after dark after a really good day in the saddle.

Thanks again Blazes, and Groot Marico brace y'self and get the mampoer stills fired up - the dogs are coming to town.

It was the first time my wife joined me as pillion on a dirt ride also and it is a very different experience than without a pillion.  The XT did very well and dealt with every oeps in its stride.  I love it!

Was my first outing with the WD's and enjoyed it even more than I expected I would.

Blazes thanks for a brilliant day.
Ryperd thanks for riding sweeper (sucking dust the whole day long) and showing us a intersting way home.

Cheers to the rest of the guys and gals I met (old and new dogs).
Must do it again.

What a ride!

What an awesome sight looking in your rear view mirror and seeing so many bikes.

As a group the WD's turned a lot of heads on the roads!

As usual Blazes supplied some fantastic roads and tracks to for us to enjoy our DS bikes to their fullest!

I had one "Faaaaark" moment on the way home following Ryperd (Thanks for leading the route home by the way it was fantastic!)

We were riding next to the railway tracks on a rather stony track when I stopped to check on Li's progress, when I pull away I hear this horrendous grinding noise!
My first thought was Fark dead gear box!
My second thought was NOOOO not this far from home!
My Third thought was "This is a KLR they don't just break, sure bits fall off from time to time  ;) but they go on forever right!"

I kill the engine and restart all is normal, I pull away and GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR  :o
Now it sounds like the front sprocket is loose or striped but yet the bike pulls away like normal.
I dismount and take a close look at the chain and all seems fine  ???
I start the bike and walk next to it in 1st, Thats when I see it, a stone about the size of my thumb had by some fluke landed on top of the chain and gone into the front sprocket cover, as I go forward the stone bounces around between the chain and the cover.
I revers and few meters and it falls out. I check the chain and cover and all is fine just a few scratches inside the cover.

I continue the ride and promise to never doubt my beasts reliability again.

Jules

What a pleasure meeting with so many new faces!!! Think Blazes got me hooked with the WD's and wud luv to do plenty more of his trips - lots of experience there.

Strange how one hooks up with ppl that u knew or heard off ten, twenty, thirty years later - still doing the dirt thing. Pity I missed out on the ride afterwards but will definitely hook up at some other time.

A million thanks to Blazes and everyone else involved in the ride.

Ps:  Malibu, let the good times roll!!

Blazes, I saw Malgat at the Micro Brewers thingie at harties in the afternoon.

Tells me he limped from garage to garage but got back and had to change his back tyre - says there was a cut in it that kept causing punctures.

Splash I saw at the start and at the first regroup (I think) and then I remember an orange bike heading off on tar - left where we went right. Could have been splash.

Yeah yaeh ok, I have to admit that I'm probly the slowest monkey around. Li and Blondie (Tonteldooos' wife) and all the others, were far ahead of me at every meeting point. But that is what I enjoy. I ride slow even on tar, and the dogs never even once told me to go faster, if I want to go slow, I'm allowed to go slow. Thanks a lot guys and girls. You people rock, and I love riding with you.

Till we meet up for more beers, ride safe my friends!

Thanks to Blazes for once again an awesome ride, it is always great to ride with you.  Thanks to everyone for making it a wonderful day, it is always nice to meet new dogs and get together with familiar dogs to enjoy the day.  It was really great having more ladies join the ride.

I was pleased to see my confidence levels are back up again.  Ryperd took us on a ride home that had quite a number of hairy places, but, I managed them and did not keep the group waiting too long for me.  Thanks Ryperd it was fun.

I look forward to the next ride, until then, take care.

there is no such thing as luck,,,good or bad

i believe my puncture problems have been solved,,,after riding 3 days without hassles i managed to pick up a puncture again after the first stint of offroad,,,totally pissed off i managed to skip and pump, back to the bike shop from garage to garage,,,,

my problem since the dullstroom ride was in fact an small cut on the inside wall of my tyre,,,riding easy tar roads it didnt bother but once you hit offroad and the wheel absorbs the bumps and grind the cut would pinch the tube (my 4th in a row)

so kippie had to buy an unscheduled tyre and replaced the tube

so all is well in my camp

thanx for the ride as far as i could go,,,,nice turnout, nice bikes, nice people, nice nice nice
(as you can see im rather dikbek, for missing this ride)

Thanks for organising the trip Blazes, was good to get out again with new WD's (and some old ones ;D).  The group was BIG, and part for the 1st turn-off where Malibu went straight, no other mishaps that I know off.

Was nice to ride sweeper, and was great to see the confidence levels grow as the km's ticked along.

Our trip back home was fun, the rail roads are always lekka!!

Till next time

Special thanks to Blazes for putting the day together, and all of you who gave important advice during the ride (switch ABS off, use the back brake rather than the front, rise your center of gravity by standing up, etc..). If I only had know these when we were trying to catch up with the bigger group and hit the first parts of the gravel...

Nice to have had you along on the ride ;) They told you to turn your ABS Off ??? Ah well lets not go there ;D

Some amazing photos taken as well.... really like the forest pic's ;)

Glad you got ur new bike Malibu - you look good on it
I Think Malibu got more looks from the guy's than her bike did. ::)

As long as that was not because I was trying to look as though I knew what I was doing and failing miserably...
Can't wait for the Ladies Dirt Course....   :D

rise your center of gravity by standing up, etc..).

you actually lower your C of G by standing as you place your weight at the pegs rather than the seat (sitting).

you will have a lot more control of the bike while standing because the bike able to move under you, without upsetting your stance. you must allow the bike to move,

In tuns (like long fast sweeps - not tight turns) and up steep hills etc but keep your (body) over the center of the bike, i.e . open your knees and lean the bike while remaining "staight up" over the bike

Standing is alway faster than sitting, except during a tight turn, where you want your weight forward and your upper body in an attack position

Maybe i am just the exception to the rule ??? But i would rather sit at 145km ph going through a turn than stand ;) The wind wants to blow me off standing ???I am a instructor's nightmare. I ride very unorthodox But Hell it work's for me. To each his own. I have taken what work's for me in all my years of racing and use that. ::)

I rarely stand as well. Too lazy.

Works for me.

But. I don't go 145km/h through a corner!

You should corner quicker sitting anyway.
See what Chad Reed does on a corner.

I agree with you, in a turn you need to bee seated to stop the front wheel washing.

WRONG, you raise your centre of gravity by standing! This is a common misconception. Where do you think all your body mass has gone? It hasn't gone down, it's gone higher into the air.

Yup - It goes up, but up is good ! It makes you fall over more slowly, and gives you time to react. And also by standing you can control the bike with the feet, which is hard with your butt.

Ryperd are you really wanting a 1200ADV that much you had to fit the spot lights? If it's not bad enough that the 1200ADV clan always run their high beam, low beam, spots, candles, zenon helmet light, the moment they turn on the bike.  >:D :imaposer:

Yes. I must add my thanks too for organizing a great ride.
Thanks to Blazes for organizing the ride.
Thanks to Ryperd for sweeping.
Thanks to Gunda for treating the snakebite.
And thanks to Malibu that I wasn't the only one showing off a new 800 GS.
My first time out with the WDs and only 2nd time on dirt. My jacket doesn't look so clean anymore!
It seems I posted my pics from the run in the Ride Planning section instead of here. So here's the link anyways http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=19099.100 (http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=19099.100).

See y'all at the next ride! :thumright:

I'm loving the new bike, but sadly only get to ride her every 2nd weekend as I'm on a project in Cape Town.
I'm gonna hit the dirt again (figuratively) on the weekend of the 5th on my own little back-yard ride if I can't find anything planned.
I'll post some pics after.
almost finshed running it in now. Only another 400km or so to go.
