Something along these lines
(http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NjAwWDgwMA==/z/3NIAAOSwGIRXcQdD/$_20.JPG?set_id=8800005007)
I'm shopping in the R65k range so I can't afford a newer model, but are the old ones that bad?
If I buy one without the rally fairing, am I really looking at R30k+ to upgrade? I don't need the long range tanks or anything, I'm just looking for the belly plate and better wind protection...plus it looks awesome.
Is that a 21" front wheel in the pic? I've always wondered why the 690 comes with such a small front wheel ???
-
I wish you all the best with your search, really not easy to find an 'adventurised' one in that price range.
Not a 690, but I really like what they've done to this 640 as well.

Yeah that 640 hasn't been changed a whole lot from standard, but the small changes add up to a lekker bike.
A 640 is tempting but I'm not a fan of carbs. Too fiddly.
I wish they just had a 690 Adventure! The 950 became the 990. Why the hell did the 640 get left behind?
The 690 in the pic is close to my price with 22,000km on it. It could be the one :ricky:

Did you ever speak to that guy with 2013 model?

I joined that Facebook group and searched for his name but couldn't find it.
I did find a 2013 in PE on Gumtree though; might be the same bike? No rally fairing but I guess I need to choose whether I want a recent model or the fairing; can't afford both :P

If you joined the group that link I sent you should take you straight to the add. Try it again.

Wow, it must be Friday :lamer:
Yup, link worked and it's the same bike I saw on Gumtree. No rally fairing but at least it has a small screen on it. Well priced for a 2013; I'll contact him :thumleft:
-
Ok so that 2013 is sold. It wasn't going to last long at that price.
This one claims to be a 2009 but all the other 2009 bikes have a different colour scheme.
Is this a 2009?

690's come standard with 21" fronts & 18" rears, same as most plastics :thumleft:

But easily 90% of the second hand bikes I'm finding are 18"/18", like the pic above. Seemingly only the rally bikes have 21"/18".
I'm assuming it was a dealer floor option?

I don't think your statement is correct. That pic looks like a 21/18 combination. Don't know of any 18/18 combination.
-
As Buff has already stated, there has never been a 690 Enduro that came with a 18", 18" combination and it has always been 18", 21"
If you are concerned about confirming factory year model, you can do so from the VIN number.

You might be thinking about the SMC

the older KTM 660 SMC, the newer 690 SMC, and the 690 Duke, a-l-l use 17' inch front,, 17" rear, NO 18"s...
and as all have said here, all 690 enduro's come out standard with 18" inch rear, 21" front.
Cheers

stay away from the sick vrotties - 99% of them are totally shagged - truly horrible bikes
the old carb fed LC4 motors are terrible :pot:
-
My eyes deceive me. Weird how the front wheel looks so much bigger on the rally bikes.

Yeah I'm not touching carbs. I'd be interested in an XRL if they were fuel injected.
Do you mean the non-690cc FI motors are also truly horrible bikes?

You'll have less tears buying a low km carbed DR, XRL or KLR, that will cost you much less than an old unreliable 690.
The cherry on top will be a low km Husky 610 TE. Low 1st, 2nd and high 6th gear. Yes the last ones are Fi. I paid R 45k for mine, fully farkled, with only 8k on the clock.
I still have my DR 650, and use the 990 for 2-up gravel touring.
I reckon a Husky 701, once the Duke engine is fitted, can be seen in my crystal ball!

I'd give my left nut just to FIND a 610TE and I'd still pay the cash to buy it.
I've read that the suspension on the DR is inferior to the XRL. The 2014+ KLR had a notable suspension upgrade I fear it might be a bit underpowered for my liking.
Maybe I should be giving carbs a chance...

The LC4 engines with FI as fitted to 690 endures are much better, smoother and more powerful - I like those
The 640 engine in the sick vrottie adventure is kak - I know of so many that were broken early on - I believe these engine have a poor oil circulation system and this is what caused so many top end failures and camshaft related problems

Here you go, spend the extra bit:

I've lost all respect for you with this statement. :patch:
My LC4 640 has done 5,000km and still very little problems! :imaposer:

The 650 Terra is not a bad suggestion, but the numbers point to it being a bit cramped for my long legs. I won't write it off though.
That said, if I had that kind of money I'd be aiming at a 990. If it's a consideration then maybe I can just re-sell the extras I don't need like the GPS.
