Title: Ordering 690 sub-frame tank reinforment bolts - Perunmoto
Post by: aka.Goliath on July 04, 2016, 11:25:50 am
I am putting in an order for a set of these KTM 690 Subframe (tank) reinforcement kit (http://www.perunmoto.com/products/ktm-690-subframe-tank-reinforcement-kit?variant=685606403) from Perumoto. I will make the order in the next week. If anyone would like to join in on an order and split shipping let me know. You need to specify which year model bike you have when ordering. If you asking why you need these - http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/ktm-690-enduro-replacement-tank-bolts-%C2%96-complete-subframe-reinforcement-kit.954935/ (http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/ktm-690-enduro-replacement-tank-bolts-%C2%96-complete-subframe-reinforcement-kit.954935/)

What are they going to cost?

R15 x $70 = Around R1050 for a set plus shipping and a small customs fee split between us. Shipping is $23 but goes up slightly as more are ordered up to $32. If we get 10 or more parties interested I will contact the supplier and ask for a discount. I stay in Joburg for pick up or I will send them via courier to anywhere else in the country (should be no more than R100 but may be as low as R50)

Could be interested, but are they not available locally from Flying Brick?

Not on their website, but will give them a call.

Edit: They are R1399 from flying brick which is more than getting them from Purunmoto which includes delivery. So I'm going ahead with my order unless someone knows of another place I can get them from in SA.

As far as I know the ones at flying brick only come with the two upper bolts, not the lower one.

And as far as I remember, it is the lower ones - respective a play that develops there that makes eventualy the top ones break. I would - and did - change both, bottom and top. I have the complete Perun moto set on mine and so far after three longer trips with lots of luggage all is good.

Just one complication with the Perun moto upper bolts if you have Omega rally kit. The Rally kit tanks are attached on the upper bolts and the cutout around the upper bolt on the tanks is not big enough to use 27 socket required for Perun moto bolts - I had to grind a bit of tank away to make the cutout bigger.

The problem is that Perun moto bolts do not have an opening for Ln key as the standard bolts do. I made it work but it still touch and go and I dearly hope that I will not have to take the tanks off somewhere in the sticks (and I have to carry heavy 27 socker and ratched just for that purpose).

Broke a top one on my previous 690 and will never ride without them again.
Cheers

I've already ordered them. I will have a few extra for anyone else that may want and at a pretty good price.

Just got confirmation that they have been sent by DHL and are in there way. When they've arrived I'll post up here with what extra sets I have.

Yes, when we FIRST bought 690 tank bolts (from a WD Vendor), they were quite a bit less than importing from KTM Twins (now out of business?), and presumably less than Perun Moto too...

then the supplier had a price increase, then another, and before we knew it, we were more expensive (seemingly) than importing!  :eek7:

So we will now do the following:

We will reduce the price in-store of these remaining bolts to OUR COST, which I will calculate and post here...
If we keep stocking them, I will ensure they are price-competitive - I am busy dealing with Perun for a future (2017) supply of lower foot-pegs, so it would be easy for me then to import (affordably) 690 tank bolts...

WHAT I NEED HELP WITH is that I have only ever sold the UPPER bolts, I think someone explained the lower bolt was a non - issue:

can someone confirm if you are getting UPPER and LOWER bolts in this order, and what price you are getting them at?

Cheers

Ok, we used to SELL them for R960, but then the price TO US went up to R943, so we sold them for R1399....

So I have 5 sets in stock, they are quality, and I will sell them AT OUR COST, R950.

My understanding is the other way around - it is the lower bolts that are the weak point and eventually cause breakage of the upper bolts. The crappy lower bolts (or rather bushings) develop a play, which eventually make upper bolt to break - at least that used to be the theory when they developed the replacements kits (I think Rally Raid first, then Perunmoto).

On top of that the upper bolts mount into flimsy flange/tab (is that correct word?) on the frame, while replacement ones add a screw to the other side reinforcing the whole assembly.

So I would (and did) replace both sets.

Ok, learning WITH you here:  ;D

Here is what his WEBSITE says!:
http://www.perunmoto.com/collections/ktm-690-enduro-enduro-r/products/ktm-690-subframe-tank-reinforcement-kit (http://www.perunmoto.com/collections/ktm-690-enduro-enduro-r/products/ktm-690-subframe-tank-reinforcement-kit)
KTM 690 Enduro/Enduro R/SMC have known and documented problem with weak upper subframe (tank) bolts. This kit minimizes chance of failure of upper subframe (tank) bolts, by preventing free play in lower tank joint and by improving quality and design of upper tank joint.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong?

I don't know - I read the Perunmoto quote exactly the same way as I described it. I do not deny that top bolts are crap, but my understanding is that main impetus for breakage is the free play in lower bushes, which stronger upper bolt may delay, but probably not completely prevent. That is why they well the lower bolts as well.

HEre is a video from Rally Raid, which says the same, but you have to wait till the second half of the video (about 6:20) as first one talks only about weakness of top bolts, but then states clearly in second half that the play in lower bolts is the culprit of upper bolts breakage:
