Title: KoŽs Rally again and a meeting with an old lady.
Post by: ChrisL - DUSTRIDERS on July 17, 2016, 10:47:28 pm
This year have not been a great year for riding for me. January and Feb I spent more time in bed than out and the odd daytrip ended up with me in more pain as before and also me being scared of riding. Problem was my left leg could not take the weight of the bike whenever I stopped and thus I was scared of stopping and dropping the bike. :eek7:

Days spent in bed later on caused thoughts of maybe this is the year that I will be forced to stop riding. I somber thought in itself. I got talked into going to the EC bash and the trip there went well but I came back in a car with the bike on a trailer. Yes my bike broke down.

As early as January I got a call from Weskus asking if we are going to do the KoŽs madness again and I said no. There is no way I will be able to do that distance on a bike with how my body felt. The sunday before the KoŽs Rally I went on a daytrip and felt so good when I got back I told management I felt so good I feel like doing the KoŽs thing. She said then you go!! :thumleft: I sent JJR a sms asking if his vacation forms were signed. His answer was "i am in"!! Needless to say the next day I could barely walk but I had committed and said nothing about it to JJR. He was busy sorting every out on his farm while we would be away.

Wednesday morning I was slow in starting. Had only about 400 kms to.

I made good time and did not stop anywhere but had to make a stop at VaalBaas's butchery. Coffee was made and sarmies eaten.
He had to show me the next batch of salamies. :drif:

Imagine being part of a business that's been going for 60 years!! :thumleft:
Thanks for the chat, coffee Vaalbaas and the sarmies Marloes.

I was early at JJR's place and looked around at all his toys. He was busy out cropspraying on some field that had to be done before we leave.
His bike was not packed and because his KTM was in it's natural inviroment, yes broken in a workshop the poor man had to take his 1150 ADV, shame!! :eek7: ;)
He has two of these giants. He says the one is his spare if the oldest one breaks down which is true because he has nothing that would pull his ten meter planter if it breaks down.

At least he has two proper tractors ;) :deal:Ok ok I am a green fan!! ;) :thumleft:

That evening was spent packing, eating and just chilling with his great family and dogs. The next morning we left with a bite in the air which stopped after Clanwilliam. At a stop on the way I mentioned we should stop in Van Rhynsdorp where Weskus and kie is getting together before they start their trip to KoŽs.
Jannie's 950 Super Enduro. Man this one sexy bike!! :drif:

Everyone getting to know each other :thumleft:

We said our "see you in KoŽs" goodbey's and hit the N7. We took it quite relaxed as we were only going as far as Vioolsdrift for that night.
Stopped a few times along the road for a bite and a chat. Mostly to chat. It's something we did well and it never dried up. :thumleft:

Late afternoon we arrived at Fiddlers Creek. No one in the campsite!!! Just the two of us and the owners.
Got the wood and drinks we wanted and we were sorted.

What followed was a lekke evening around the fire. It was clear although we have know each other a while but have only ridden together one daytrip that we would gel well on this trip. :thumleft:
Apparently that orange thing was spotted from outa space!! >:D

To be continued if and when I get a gap in front of this computer again ;)

I'm always pleased to see a RR from ChrisL. I know there'll be good photos and text, but I also know how well he brings across the atmosphere, the spirit of the trip.

Makes me want to do the long trips again. Thanks.

Friday morning we got up and did the coffething and started packing and talking and before we knew it it was 9:30!! :eek7: We still have to cross the border and get to KoŽs!!
We took the tar to Grunau and shortly after took the first dirt right.

Met this guy at the Nam border. He went and bought that Kombi shell all the way from Cape Town in Otjiwarongo. He said in two years time it would be showroom condition. Methinks he is a magician!!He has seventeen and no he does not sell them. Guess he waits until he is retire age ;)

I have always wanted to go and ride on that pan in the far distance. It seems someone in the foreground is trying to fill it!! :eek7: :imaposer:

Netjiese mannetjie die JJR kyk hoe was en droog hy sy wasgoed elke dag!!! :lol8:Daai ontie dwarrel behoorlik op full speed!!

At last the first bit of dirt.  :thumleft:It seems they had a bit of rain here.

This is part of the Karas mountains.

We turned off on the D611 north. I was stiff and could not bet off the bike. My rightfoot would just not get over the seat and then my leftleg just said no more and I fell like a bag of potatoes flat on my back. So my riding buddy asks " het jy geval of doen jy strek oefeninge"?!!!! :lol8:

Apparently it is not so difficult to buy property in Namibia, especially the sandy bits. They hand that out for free with title deeds!! :lol8: :deal: ;)

Had to add these two. Number two would make a great posters methinks. :thumleft:

Here they must have had some very late rain as some of the grass is still greenish. Not too far from the big town now. ;)

And then we saw a pan, some dust and then a town. The offroad race was still on.

We first went to the pan to see who was there and who not and then went to get some supplies in town. Nimmo and JC joined us. JJR bought a big bag of ice which he promptly lost 30 meters from the shop!! :lol8:

Some of the fellow WDs were already there at the campsite. Martin, Fiona, Heiner and Parkinoff. Martin from Walvisbaai with his sidecar. Ask him anything he had it in his sidecar. It was good to meet Martin and thank you for the bottomless koffiekan. :thumleft:

As always it was stunning sunset. :thumleft:

It was a night some would never forget and some would rather forget ;) We were entertained with tales of left hooks, headbutts and tattoed giants!!
At four in the morning JJR and I got up for a leak and Weskus pleaded to JJR,! Josef gooi asb my kop toe met iets maar net nie sand nie!
It seems the Riekie Louw that has kept him warm for part of the night has left him!! It was seriously cold and he must have had a long night. :eek7:

Saterday morning we woke up with a cold miserable easterly wind blowing and it did so the whole day. At one stage I saw Fiona shaking like leaf so cold was she. :eek7:

We rekindled the fire and made coffee. Weskus still looks frozen.

Sunday morning we were all up early. Time to say goodbeys and hit the road.
It was a good visit in KoŽs as was last year. :thumleft:

JJR and I took the great white road to Mariental. It was in good condition and we were in no hurry as we had not decided where we would sleep that night.

From here the trip basically kept on tar which was good. It meant helmettime and that was good. :thumleft:
The man bought me a non alkoholic beer in Rehoboth. That thing was sooooooo bitter and I nearly peed in my pants later on the way to Windhoek!! :lol8:

We pulled in at Arrebusch campsite late afternoon and had a relaxed night by ourselves. Just talking around the fire until it was time for bed. The following day we had another couple of kilos to do and wanted to start early.

Monday morning we moved early out of Windhoek north. Lots of road works to Okahandja and thereafter could we open up a bit.

About lunch we were in Otjiwarongo and I phoned a friend that farms close that we would see him later that afternoon but we first had to go meet an old lady in Outjo.

In 1965 when I was about two months old my father and four others drove from Cape Town to Luanda Angola in a Dodge 1922 motorcar.
The trip was two and half months. My father said by the time they got back I had stopped yelling as it was the reason he went on the trip anyway!!! :lol8:

The night they got back at our house.

My father far right age 44 then offloading the car. He was the cook as he had no mechanical skills. They ate curry the whole two months!!  :eek7: :lol8: Two guys were the drivers and two the tyre repairmen and my father the cook.

Newspaperclip in Windhoek which they reached after four days of driving. Most of the N7 and B1 was still dirt then.

Newspaperclip in Luanda.

For years I wondered whatever happened to the old car and its owner. Of the five men I only knew three and they have all passed away.
About 5 years ago a neighbour was at the right time at the right place and he met the owner of the car then and who still owns it. I from time to time phoned and spoke to him and promised him I would come for a visit.

The owner of the car bought the car in 1953 while a student in Stellenbosch. He swapped a tux and a bicycle for the car!!

For two days I kept on phoning the two numbers I had of the owner of the car but could not reach him. As we rode the 60 kms to Outjo I thought we would return empty handed, because I had a vague idea of where he stays outside town on a farm and they do not answer their phones.
Luck handed us a good card later that day. :thumleft:

to be continued..........................i have to download some more pics.

Chris,

I am sure Fiona appreciates your effort in doing this in the Rooitaal! We are trying our best to teach her some Afrikaans but unfortunately it seems that only the bad stuff gets stuck in her mind! At least the basics like "Goeiemore" en "Hoe Gaan dit" etc seems to be slowly but surely coming along.

We rode through Outjo direction Kamanjab and I turned the first road left after town and two kilos later there was no farm or at least with the name I was looking for on the right. Jip I had my directions wrong :eek7:
We go back to town and ask at the first garage. Nope they do not know the owner.
Second place we asked was a diner of some sort. The lady there phoned all over town and finally said we should go across town to a business and there works a lady that knows the owner of the car and where his farm is.

We go we wait and finally she arrives. Yes he is there and the gate is open. A bit further out of town we turn left at a unmarked gate and ride down a two track road to a farmhouse.

And there she is all 94 years of age nearly ready to roll again!!!! OK it will take a bit more but her engine is running. :thumleft:
I was really looking forward to see this old car as it has been part of most of my life when stories about my father was told. Sad thing is my father passed away in 1996 and the car was here all the time but he did not know where uncle Fritz or the car was and if he was still alive. I was just lucky to find out the way I did. My father would have liked to see both I know that for sure. :thumleft:

This is where the back seat is and I cannot imagine my father and two others sat here for 2 and a half months. I knew all three of the backseaters and neither was small at all!! :eek7:

These you do not get from Tyger Wheel n Tyre :deal: On the trip they had to constantly water the wooden spokes cause they got loose in the dry climate.

Five new whitewall tyres were bought from the USA to be fitted when the car runs again. (not fitted yet)

Yes engine temp is very important but no need to look on the dash for such info!! ;)

Apparently this had to be done a lot on the trip, in fact they had to push start about every time.

Just need a wee bit of paint ;)

Meet 88 year old Fritz Schutz. Man this guy have hunderds of stories to tell about this car and of trips done with it in years after. In 1966 he and his wife worked for 6 months in Tsumkwe teaching the bushmen. The car was the only transport they had. They went to Kaokoland in it in 1967.
In 68 they toured up the Skedelkus and 69 Boesmanland again working as a teacher with the bushmen. We looked at pictures of the old car doing endless white sand tweespoor tracks. How he got through it I do not know. Even with a one year old toddler and a pregnant wife as passengers!!! :eek7:

If I can be like this man at 88 I say roll on old age!! :deal: :thumleft: He and his wife still goes to the Kaokoland three times a year to go and preach to the local people.

We could have stayed longer with this couple because they were so vibrant and full of life. We said our goodbeys and promises of another visit and hit the road back to Otjiwarongo and my friends farm 32 kms from town.
Late afternoon we were on his road to his home. I have never been here and it was long overdue visit which we both enjoyed very much. AND WE SLEPT IN A BED!!! :thumleft:

The night at my friends place we farmed, we talked old war stories, hunting stories, pistol shooting stories and ate the best Kudu steaks I have eaten in my life. :thumleft:

Tuesday morning it was time to turn home. About 2000 + kms. for me. We walked the farmyard first and we both wanted to see the 12 000 ha farm and the game breeding camp but time was against us. It just gives me more reason to go again. ;)

This old water tank was changed into a underground bunker with shooting tower on top for the women of the household to go hide in when the men were out on patrols in the borderwar. Not very far from the homestead was the nearest battle. Generator room was part of it. Note the sloped cement underground corridor from the right coming from the house.

This is inside the corridor.

From within the bunker towards the corridor. Note just outside of the door they had made a petrol trap. So if someone poured petrol down the corridor it would go into the trap and not under the door into the bunker.

The stairs to the shooting bunker. At the time of the war some army officials came and looked at their bunker and said it would be easy to shoot from below at someone up in the bunker. My friend said lets have a go and they did with paintball guns. They shot the army guys "pimpel and pers" from up top!!! :lol8:

His father was a ironworker and made his own horseshoes. All the tools are still there and in good shape ready to be used. Very sad thing is a big grinder blade broke off while using the grinder and went into his head. He spent his last 22 years of his life in a wheelchair not being able to walk or talk. :( This was a man that was called the horse whisperer of Namibia he was that good with horses.

Stops along the road again became regular and we always had something to talk about. Now JJR has a thing about walking sticks and to be able to cut one from a tree is even better. Well we had no time to do so on this trip BUT my friend had a whole bunch of sticks that an old farm worker made and then sold. Well JJR could pick one and take it home :thumleft: Interesting thing is they are made from a Roseintjiebos and they never have strait branches. Always bent and crooked. Well the worker would make a fire on sand and then stick the branch in the hot sand and after a while pull it out and then straiten it bit by bit by hand. Needless to say JJR was pretty chuffed with his present. :thumleft:

I took the wrong turn into Windhoek to get fuel and then had to go into town all the way. Something I did not want to do as I hate Windhoek traffic :eek7: Whilst filling up someone developed a "lus" for ROAK a raw german mince meat and we drove all over town to get to this shop to get some and then I was given strict orders to stop outside Windhoek at the very first possible place we could chow!! ;)

A bretchen and roak, would I buy it? Nope but it was not awfull or like they say in the cooking programs "an acquired taste" ;) JRR ate his and then mine later that evening. :drif:

Then as we left a certain bystander tells the cop he is now going to take the lead and HE will make sure I do not exceed the speed limit. To keep up I saw 150 at some times which was a good thing cause darkness caught us anyway :lol8:
We got ourselves a room at Oewerbos not wanting to pitch tents in the dark and ate one of the if not the best pizza I have ever had in my life that night. :drif: :deal:

We both slept like logs and the next morning promptly got a bed partner!!! :imaposer: :lol8:

Our little room for the night. Liked it a lot. :thumleft:

Getting back to the N7 and the long haul back to Porterville.

The walking stick made it over the border and safely home.

We turned in at Bowesdorp just before Kammieskroon to look at some old cars. The owner was there on holiday and we stayed for a good chat.
Had a bit to eat before getting back on the N7 again.

At Garies we stopped for fuel and two NEW YORK, PARIS, GARIES T shirts for the girls at home. :thumleft: Nice curio shop there.

In Bitterfontein we stopped to look at another old car. I noticed in the shop they were selling neck braces, SDan would love this model I thought >:D :deal:

Late afternoon we stopped safely at JJR's farm and had a great evening of eating and telling stories of our trip. A first but as I was told as we stopped by JJR not to be the last. :thumleft: :deal:

The next morning I left for home.

400+ kilos later I pulled into my favourite  driveway :thumleft:

The trip was +- 4200 kms and i was not  physically up to it as my riding on dirt showed. Getting on and off the bike was a battle BUT it did my head wonders :thumleft:

JJR thank you for all your help, friendship and chats along the way. :thumleft:
Amanda thank you for uploading all these pics and looking after our home and business while I was away. :thumleft:

Thank you for reading. :thumleft:

:lol8: :imaposer:

So groet die spul maar mekaar. Wat verwag jy van n dorp waar die hotel en bar aan n predikant behoort!! :peepwall: :lol8: :deal:

That was an epic ride report! Thanks for writing it in English.  I couldnít help but use Google translate to find out about the socks.   JJR puts me to shame as I only have two pairs of MX socks and I wore them for the complete 7 day trip without washing them!   >:D Sounds like you had a great time.  And you managed to eat the best ever Kudu steaks and pizza all in the same trip.  Next time we see each other, you must try my oxtail potjjie  :pot:
