Title: I have a dream ..............
Post by: Kobus Myburgh on July 23, 2016, 09:37:27 am
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
Martin Luther King Jr

"I have a dream.  With that one sentence, Martin Luther King touched and empowered an entire nation.  You know what else he did?  He made everybody else without dreams feel real bad."
Christopher Titus

Often I find inspiration through the words of other people, not only the famous ones, sometimes ordinary people that come up with really sensible statements that just touches something inside me.

Even on this forum, I've found true inspiration in the likes of Joey Evans and his thread "From Para to Dakar" and many similar others.  It inspires me to be better, bolder and pursue those things that are continuously set aside for 'one day'.

When my sisters 13 year old son died of brain cancer last year, I promised myself that I will live my life differently.  There is no time like the present - Live as if there is no tomorrow.

Despite this undertaking, I withdrew from participating in the West Coast Baja earlier this year.  I convinced myself that the timing was not right, work load was too much etc. etc.  Again I prolonged something that I knew was something I wanted to do before my time is up.

A couple of months ago I set out to pursue this dream in all earnest.  And finally, I am convinced that, God willing, nothing will interfere this time round of getting to the starting line in 2017.

I intend to share my preparation, as a complete newbie, with you guys here, for those interested. Fitness preparation (quitting smoking is gonna be the hardest part), ATGATT, bike preparation (although my current bike is very much rally ready) and trying to keep an accurate log of the associated costs.

I will also rely heavily on those who's been there, done that, with endless questions.

"Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending."
Maria Robinson

Kobus, the difference between a groove and a grave is the dept. But its equally difficult to get out of both.

Married man, bond, kids, wife, home and job puts you in a groove.

Good luck, looking forward to your preparations.

Psst, On 3 Sept I will be racing my first quad race. Come hell or high water.

This is exactly what I mean Kobus. It's these collective words of wisdom from which I draw inspiration.  :thumleft:

ktmkobus, I will follow with anticipation. Most of us are stuck in the same old rut and "tomorrow is another day syndrome"

One of my favorites is below, sunrise in the berg.

Serkte Kobus,

(Kry by baie ander plekke net omdat ek vra.)

Wees MOERSE nuuskurig.
(dit bring ons weer terug by 'Never stop asking questions')

As jy sukkel met rookery check bietjie by health shops hulle het great natuurlike produkte wat baie
sal help.

Dankie Adie, NoRush,

Love the quote and a beautiful pic to go with it.

This is the weapon I chose to do the rally with:

A 2014 KTM 450 with currently 36 hrs on. Already pretty much rally ready.

This 8 liter Safari rear tank must still be fitted.  The range on the 18 liter front tank should be sufficient between fuel stops, but I want to use the rear to split the capacity to balance the bike better.  Good idea, bad idea?

After much deliberation over what this 'protection' is for on the side stand, since it doesn't touch or scrape anywhere, I finally figured out it is simply storage for duct tape! 🙄😂 Man dis maar moeilik as 'n ou dom is!

I still need to figure out where and how the additional water (I think 2 liters) must be fitted. Any suggestions apart from the manufactured belly plate?

Then I need to start figuring out how I will make it roadworthy, which indicators, switches etc.

Thus far I have not spend anything apart from the bike purchase, which I won't account for in my cost summary, together with rally tower, roadbook and ICO.  Simple reason is that in my opinion it's a personal choice and I bought the bike complete with these items and don't have the current costs.

As long as you have 5 liters total. This can be 3 on the back, two on the bike, etc. But due to previous years groans regarding a fixed water tank on bikes, I have lessened the requirement to a minimum of two bladders on your back.

Please remember. Its best is to send your queries to entry@amageza.com. The forum may not have the answer or may have the wrong answer! Saying that you read it on the forum won't help at scrutineering! The bike scrutineer is a real tough bugger!  ;D

So the boss man says that you need 5 litres total, in two separate containers. Having one of them fixed to the bike is no longer mandatory.
It's still not a bad idea. 5kg of fluid on your back can get a bit tiring.

** Snip **
Then I need to start figuring out how I will make it roadworthy, which indicators, switches etc.
** Snap **

Before you do too much on the bike first get the NATIS/ENATIS history from the VIN.  You can ask KTM if it was brought in 'for road use' or something.  Then also enquire at the traffic if it was registered/de-registered etc etc.

The result(s) of the above will determine whether it can be registered for road use.  If it is not the case it might be difficult/impossible/lucky for the next steps.

Roadworthy is actually a no-brainer, it must just conform to regulation.  The switches etc etc are commonly available (Startline etc).  Wiring could be a mission if you want to 'quickly' remove the indicators, hooter (get that from Chinese scooter shop at R50.00) etc etc.  Depending on current wiring you might need the Banjo Bolt brake switch (or two) also Startline etc.

One tip is to replace all current wiring (if almost none exist).  You can get 9pin plugs from Bosch shops.  Invest in a PROPER crimping tool and shrink all permanent (soldered) joints. You will have a sh$%tload of wires at the neck of the frame to accomodate everything.  >:D  Only one 9or 2 fuses will be enough. (Use inline spade type available from Bosch etc. at much cheaper than the fancy fuse holder type.)

Do not mix your navigation and road wiring.

All navigation instruments must be fed directly from the battery through a single switch.  You again do not need more than one fuse for simplicity. No matter what the purists say, if you blow a fuse you will stop and investigate.  Just disconnect the unit that failed (they all come with M8 screw plugs)  It seriously simplify wiring.

Dankie Adie.  Hoekom is julle manne so ver van my af.

The original papers have not been issued yet and no registration has taken place.  (This was a condition of sale)  My understanding is that I will now go to the dealer and they will issue me with the necessary paperwork and I would not even have to take it to roadworthy, since it will basically be registered as 'new' and a 2016 model.

From there I need to start with the necessary wiring.

Great,

you only need indicators and brake lights. Plus the hooter  :laughing4: And it get checked at scruteneering.  This can simplify the 'crows' nest of wires next to the head dramatically.  You can actually put the flasher unit under the seat and have the crows nest there. it is also close to the rear brake switch and halfway for the indicators.

Enjoy

Hi Kobus
Having been feeling and thinking along the same lines as you for the last few years
The fact that you have started this thread is a ballsy move in my opinion.
congratulations I will be following with interest and hopefully lining up with you on that
day next year.
As for the bike prep I bought a prepped wr 450 earlier this year if there are any things I can help with
I will.
getting the brake lights to work is not a biggie, pressure switches that fit into the banjos on the master or slave cylinder do the switching
as for indicators those small flush mounted led ones seem to do the job just fine.
the one thing that seems to have taken a hiding on my bike after amageza was the flasher unit not that its  biggie either.
another interesting thing I noticed was that there didn't seem to be much space on the bars for all the switches.Again lots of workarounds.
the bike I bought has done amageza and the previous owner has done it a few times so I can assume he knows what works and what doesn't .
Has your suspension been sorted out for the bigger tanks ?
Good luck man

Has your suspension been sorted out for the bigger tanks ? Suspension was set up by Hilton Hayward to accommodate the front tank.  The rear tank has never been fitted before.  Uprated springs though, so will take it back to him once the rear tank is fitted so everything can be set up with my weight as well, which is a bit heavier than the previous owner.
Good luck man   :thumleft:

What makes you think I'm not as fit as a fiddle?  :patch:  :imaposer:

We have a gym at work, so the intention is to start doing core strength there and cycling for cardio. And then there's obviously no replacement for saddle time, which is going to be the biggest challenge.

I have a couple of mx and enduro dvd's that I intend watching as well.

This is an awesome goal bud! Go chase that dream.
I see you are in Gauteng, I would love to ride with you sometime, just let me know when. I'm no pro rider but would be happy to help with any Amageza advice you might need or just to chat about how it all works and what to watch out for. I'm trying to ride 2-3 times a week so any day in the week suits me fine as well. I'm cool with an out ride or at a track or whatever. Just need time in the saddle. Let me know if your keen.
Happy dream chasing ;D

Haha, yep it's pretty daunting at first. That's why they call rally riders, pilots I guess. I heard someone say it's like riding motocross whilst texting. For me I find if you just slowdown a bit and keep checking your Cap headings it's not too difficult. A few km's in and you'll be fine. Try find a roadbook route down there and give it a practice before the rally just to get the hang of it. Remember to learn the symbols. I keep a laminated copy cut in three with my markers to double check when marking the roadbook.

Good luck man!

If you need a new sticker kit give Grant Wilson from Solid Decals a ring (Zero 8 Two 498 6758) ... he has the templates for that specific bike (front tank, rear tank, fairing etc.)

My bikes DNA is the same...

Welcome to join me (and Joey) for a ride.

Hi,

I use a Camelback "Mule" model that has a 3 litre bladder and then I stick another bladder with about 1.5 litre in the airbox cavity... it's big enough to hold a lot of things :-). It worked on the 2015 Amageza and West Coast Baja. The latest regulations are not requiring the water to be fixed in a reservoir on the bike but you can carry two bladders on your pack.

When in doubt always check the regulations (regs).

Get the bike sorted and get fit... you can worry about navigation later, not much you can do till you do your first rallye, study your lexicon (navigation signs).

Later!

Kobus.... how's your dream coming along? Been quiet!

Hi AlexRG,

Admittedly I have been rather quiet on this front.  Part of the reason is working on my mechanical/technical ability, see below:

http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=196394.0 (http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=196394.0)

To give a bit of an update:

I've been spending a bit of time in the saddle on a CRF450X to get used to the bigger 4 stroke.  No serious riding, but getting back in the saddle at least and working a bit on the fitness side.  The wife has been requested to wean me into healthy eating, especially after my vitality medical assessment a week or so ago - deeming my vitality age at 55!  :eek7: :eek7: (Bloody smoking)

I've got my short term sites on the Holfontein enduros to test my endurance and perseverance under what would be relatively unfit circumstances:

Holfontein 100 - 10 September (100km, 3 hour cut off time)
Holfontein Marathon - 8 October (200km, 6 hour cut off time)
Holfontein Le Mans 300 - 12 November (300km, 9 hour cut off time) - This is a team event but can be done as the Ironman whereby you complete the entire 300km.

In between I'll just try and get as much saddle time as possible and start spending time in the gym as well as on the mountain bike.  :thumleft:

Hi Kobus,

Wow!... just read the whole other thread... page 1 to 13... now I understand!

So what happened to the KTM 450 in this post? Is it now replaced by the CRF 450?

Alex

Alex, no the Ktm is being pampered and next on the list to get fully rally ready.

Still remain the weapon of choice for next years Baja.

The CRF, well, time will tell what happens with it.  In all probability, with the amount of time Im putting into it, I'll probably fall in love with it and keep it.

Priorities will always dictate ....... and that's not necessarily a bad thing.  Races are also not everything.

In the last couple of months I've learned so much from new friends.  One of them is a Wilddog, albeit not very active I think, and I don't even have a clue what his forum name is.  He's  taken me to meet other great people on an epic ride as well as a 5 hour De Wildt ride up here in Gauteng with his two sons.  They are 'free' riders, weekend warriors that's never competed during all their years of riding.

His sons are wickedly good - the longest and most controlled stand up wheelies I've ever seen.  They ride for the pure love of it, whenever they can.

I was planning on doing a couple of GXCC's in preparation for the Baja, but now decided against it and will stick to this free riding for the pure enjoyment.  The pace of riding is brutal in terms of my ability and I'm learning so much from them.  The terrain I also believe is versatile enough to give me all the technical preparation necessary.  I'll do a couple of longer rides at pace and then I'm convinced I'll be ok for a finishing place.

Ride for the pure enjoyment.  :thumleft:

My biggest problem is that work wise I am a short term contractor. Because of this I need to pay cash for everything. All my toys and bikes were paid cash. I decided to do the top end of my 525 which cost a pretty penny or 2 and came from my racing budget. :P

Last race of the season is a week before my Lesotho trippie so its a no brainer that I will not race.

ABout the switches on the bars, I have my lights, hooter and indicator switches on the tower rather than on the bars and that passed through scrutineering just fine.

Thanks BB - this thread is however a bit worthless with the news of no Baja next year.  I'll resurrect it if there ever is a Baja again.  :dontknow: :crybaby2:

Well done! I wouldn't bother with the rear tank. More weight, more to go wrong. The front tank has enough range and is balanced. Generally, keep everything as simple as possible - less crap = less problems. Weight and complexity the enemy.

If I rally again next year it will be on a bog standard KTM 500 with indicators, 19l tank and handlebar-mounted nav gear. Klaar!

Good luck!

Thanks Max, I tend to agree on the rear tank.

I am however seriously contemplating now doing the Baja with the CRFX, providing I get my arse into gear and finish it.  By that time I'll know the bike so well + I'll have a full spares list in the plastic CRFX I have.  Will be a photo finish though.

Dankie manne.

Very excited to be able to spend some time with someone with the necessary experience.

This must have happened on the last ride in Mafikeng, because apart from washing the bike, I have not touched it since.

Re smoking;
At the time I stopped I was on 80 a day, (I was working up to 19 Hrs a day, a lot of it in the car) I got a pain in my chest, the wife thought I was going to have a heart attack, called the Doc who said I should cut down!, I was about 31 at the time. Long story short, I decided that it was in my best interest to stop, I did, cold turkey. I kept the cigarettes and lighter in the car. When I had the craving I could go to the car and have one, But I had now missed out on one for an hour or so, so if I lit one up now it would mean that, that hour was now down the drain and I would have to start again!!! and there in lies the secret of quitting for me. That was about 30 years ago. Yes there were days of extreme craving, I was not prepared to give in to that vice and surrender my success. I will confess that it was not easy. Oh, and the money saved, I bought a complete radio controlled aeroplane which was put back into kit form on several occasions.
Your determination to do the Baja together with increasing your level of fitness will give you the inspiration to quit. Go for it.
This post is amazing, to see the number of Dogs giving you the encouragement to go for it is fantastic, Realise your dream, life is short.

I've been neglecting this thread for too long now!

Thanks cheesy for the inspiration!

Currently it's all about planning, bike prep and training.  I am very fortunate to have slotted in with Jan's team and I'm learning a lot!  The Dakar drama is also truly inspirational and how is our hero Joey doing? - WOW!

Training wise we started well over the holidays.  Started running/walking for the first time in a decade - on the beach in sand.  I heard there's a lot of sand on the Baja so though I might as well get used to it!  It was however short lived when I hurt my back - second time this year!  Fortunately muscle related only, so I had to keep it easy for the rest of the holidays.

There was also the Karoo trip we did on the bikes and I think the long days riding was good saddle time, although obviously not at race pace.  There was sections of some really awesome gravel twisties and more technical stuff that I used to ride at pace.

Back is nearly good to go and I've started slowly on a bit of exercise again, cautious not to stuff it up now.  I'm fortunate to have slotted in with Jan (Sand) Coetzee's team and we're all busy with logistics and training on the bike kicks off properly next weekend.

I'll do my best to keep this thread alive from now on.

If there's any guys out there still contemplating whether to enter the Baja or not - go for it! If I can do it, so can you.  :thumleft:

This is an awesome goal bud! Go chase that dream.
I see you are in Gauteng, I would love to ride with you sometime, just let me know when. I'm no pro rider but would be happy to help with any Amageza advice you might need or just to chat about how it all works and what to watch out for. I'm trying to ride 2-3 times a week so any day in the week suits me fine as well. I'm cool with an out ride or at a track or whatever. Just need time in the saddle. Let me know if your keen.
Happy dream chasing ;D

Hi Joey,

Since the last update, I've really got my head right and arse into gear.  The Joey factor had a huge role to play and now I also look forward to following another ZA Dakar hero in the making -  http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=204606.0.  Together with the new life that's soon to be blown into the springbokkie (http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=202521.20), there's certainly enough to read on the forum lately for the rally enthusiasts.

Bike prep is going full steam ahead.  Cap to be fitted during the week as well as the rear tank.  Really still uncertain about fitting it, especially with the new distances determined for the Baja.  The 18 litre front tank somehow feels enough for a 250km refuel point.  But it's like Jan said, rather have it and don't need it, than need it and don't have it.  Who knows how lost I'll get with the first time navigation!

Training wise I've found it quite frustrating.  It's the first time I exercise in a gym and don't really know what to do.  For now stuck to some treadmill and spinning cardio and strength training.  The spinning is not working out as I found there is no exercise bicycle that caters for our tall okes, so the riding position is all wrong.  I might have to schedule that for weekends on the MTB.

I've also googled quite a bit for some training advice.  I attach some of these documents for those who'd like to have a look.  I've also updated my cost tracker and will post that shortly for those interested in also doing a Baja event for the first time.  :thumleft:

After 3 nights of training, the body gave me a clear message this morning to take a rest.  I'm aching in places that I didn't know I have!

Will take it slow for the next two days and go for a early morning cycle on Saturday.  Man, it's not easy getting back to exercising!  Does feel good doing something again though.

Tonight I fitted the ICO and CAP.  . CAP's wiring will be done tomorrow.

This Sunday is scheduled for about 160km in the saddle so really looking forward to that.

Thanks husky.

I agree with ....... uhmmmmmm ........... your TITS? .

Today was absolutely awesome, although we didn't get close to our target distance.  It was simply too wet after last nights rain.  It made for some interesting riding though and made you concentrate and test your balance non stop.

Time for a quick update:

Training is going really well.  Sticking to the gym routine as religiously as work allows and so far every Sunday has been in the saddle.

This past Sunday was tough!  Rode more continuously and at a relatively fast pace, for me anyway.  The sand monster is for now still getting the best of me and Sunday saw me came down thrice!

Also getting to know the bike and the following is things that I need to address:

Suspension too plush.  I'm hoping that I can play around with the settings opposed to changing the springs.

Roadbook holder is vibrating loose.  I'll tighten it up properly for the next ride and see if it holds up.

GPS mount needs to be tightened properly.  Moves forward and causes the front brake cable to bend over it.  Not good!

Trip is not working.  Need to check that the pickup is properly positioned.

Rear brake light not working.

Front light switch doesn't engage brights, i.e. 2nd headlight.  This will be replaced with a combination switch for the indicators etc in any case.

Camera mounting position not suitable.  You can't watch any footage without getting sea sick.  I suspect it's due to the Migtec carbon fiber holder simply vibrating/shaking too much.  I'll probably have to live without footage.

The weekend also saw the first navigation practice.

Starting to get the hang of marking a roadbook in a way I understand slowly but surely.  The navigation went relatively well but had to use the cap for trip so I couldn't ride on the bearing.

This will be sorted out for this weekend's Magalies navigation training.

I've found a place who can print a roadbook but unfortunately it's just not affordable.  For now iets 'spoeg en plak'.

More a bit later .........

Next challenge is to get the bike on the road.

I received my OEM certificate this morning from Trax KTM thanks to great service from Jeff.

I was pleasantly surprised that I in fact own a 2014 XC-W opposed to buying it as 2013 EXC!

Now I sit with these and no wiring diagram.  Ai bliksem!

Any advice welcomed at this stage.

Started stripping the rear fender and amazing where the dirt gets in.

The biggest concern I still have is whether I'll make 300km on the 21 liter front tank.  To fit the rear I have to cut the plastics on the left and I'm totally confused on the mounting method on the right as the bolt does not line up with any hole I can see.  It seems that, to have it professionally fitted, I'll have to make my way down to Garth Roberts in Mafikeng!

Anyone reading here that's perhaps done it before?

Making up the spares list tonight to get that out the way early.  Any advice on that will also be welcomed.

21 l should be ample,  just make sure its not 19l, that will still be OK but you cant get lost.

For sand you need to add comp and rebound front and rear.  Rear just low speed.  2 clicks.

Feel like an idiot tonight!

I never checked the previous owners installation and only checked for a front wheel pickup.  Not realizing it was the OEM speedo pickup that I saw opposed to the ICO pickup.

I doubt that I'll get a reading when it looks like this.

Here we go at an attempt to sort out indicators etc.

Stripped the tank to find a decent route for the cables to the battery and rear indicators from the switch.

So far so good, just a tedious process.

Will go look for some connectors tomorrow.  Don't want to continue and just make a plan.

Hi, apart from playing with the clickers to set the suspension harder or going for stiffer springs, consider a bit thicker fork oil. It worked for me.

This just in:

"Ok, Jan is more or less fine. Lets start from the top... His left "clavicle" bone is dislocated, but not broken. One of his left ribs is cracked and his left hip has taken a serious beating. He is at home now but with severe pain. The Dr. said that he needs to stay of the bike for at least 4 weeks
The tower and Fearing on the bike is fucked and will need to be rebuild. Also, the ICO,  Roadbook, Steering damper and front tyre falls under the same category as fucked. That's about it... Will see you at the Baja "

One tough bugger.  All his worried about is fixing his bike!

To 'ease the pain' Rockfox might sponsor a loan roadbook and maybe some other items if he is 'healed' in time.

Quick update:

Two things I realised on the weekend session:

- I went on the cheap with the indicators and realise they won't even last from now until scrutineering.  I will either have to upgrade the flush mount indicators or replace with LED ones that I have.  They however protrude and not sure how they will hold up to a fall.

- I realised my handlebars are bent and need replacement.  This will give me the option of going a little bit higher on the height and I have the option of Renthal KTM high bars or Torc1 RC or RV.  Seems like the Renthals are out of stock at the moment.

Any advice, like always, appreciated.

Nee man, daai Chineeze shite is 100%.

And immediately I run into challenges!

Advice once again please guys.

The height of the replacement bars are the same as the ones on there.  No problem since I have 1 1/8 risers.

Well, so I thought.  The standard Tusk risers doesn't match the holes of the KTM.

Am I right in assuming this will be a KTM riser that I must get?

The alternative that I have is take the Pastrana FMX bars off the 990 and put them on the 450.  It has a much higher rise naturally and I can fit the new bars + Tusk risers on the 990.

Hoekom se jy so Bill?

Ek was daar ***

:thumleft:

Nice.

The good news of the day is that there's a real possibility that friend Jan can ride.  Providing the ligaments in the shoulder heals well and the physiotherapist is happy with the progress, its game on!

We'll shortly start with rebuilding his bike.

Finished the handlebars tonight and everything feels great.  Was nice to do everything over and position the levers and switches exactly like I want it for the first time.

Thanks again for the advice Bill, it feels right without the raisers and the only thing I did was tilt the handlebars forward ever so slightly.

My next quest will be to set up the suspension, another thing I know squat about.

Started reading up a bit and will tackle it tomorrow.  During the research, I read the following, reinforcing all of Bill's advice.

"Handlebar height
One thing I notice often is how many bikes have handlebar raisers.  Using raisers move your weight upwards and backwards on the bike and this in turn affects the bikes center of gravity.

Constructors design a bike with a specific center of gravity in mind and every mm that you move your weight upwards and backwards affects this.  In practice what happens is that it becomes more difficult to put pressure on the front wheel, especially in corners.  This can cause under steering or bad traction on the front wheel.  It also unweights the fork too much which leads to comfort and performance problems.

I am 6 foot 1" and stand 90% of the time when I ride (this is how you should ride!) and never use raisers.  If you look at any bike competing in the world champs you will hardly ever see raisers even on the tall riders' bikes.  In fact many top enduro riders even use lower handlebars to enable them to get as much pressure on the front wheel as possible for maximum traction to make up time in corners!

If you use raisers because your back hurts or standing feels uncomfortable, then I suggest you visit your physio more often, or train your legs so that you can bend your knees a little more!

If you buy a steering damper make sure it mounts above the handlebar and not below for this same reason."

Renthal has a KTM low bend that returns the right geometry if you already have a sub mount.

Thanks Bill.  The replacement is actually something in between the KTM high and low bar, so a nice compromise.

Went spares shopping today.  The nice thing about buying a second hand rally built bike is that you usually get quite a few spares with it.  I'm lucky to have a brand new clutch lever, front and rear brake levers, gear lever etc.

So today I got a spare air filter, sprockets and chain.  Things I will in any event replace at some stage.

My biggest 'liewe bliksem' moment was when I asked for 2 plugs for a 2014 450 XC-W.  R400 each!  Needless to say, I only bought one, knowing that someone is going to comment here saying you could've just bought x plug, they're the same.  It is sometimes really expensive to be stupid.

I then started scratching in the garage for something that resembles a tool pouch to mount somewhere on the bike.  I found what must be a >10 year old sakkie and decided that it will do the job.  I'll also be riding with a tool belt but want to split the weight to not carry too much on me.

The suspension check revealed that everything was within the recommended settings, so, with my lack of experience, I won't fiddle any more.

Tomorrow is nav training again, so really looking forward to that.

 :lol8:

:thumleft:

Daai tan is ń bogger. My take is gewone sweat bands. Gee nogal lekker wrist support ook. Geen glove tan.

Quick update:

Nerves are kicking in big time now.  In the meantime packing and checking and re-checking and ticking off the lists.

Bike was serviced and so nice to experience the good service Trax has to offer!

When I got there to fetch my bike I realized I never asked them to check my rear light.  No problem - 5 minutes later sorted.

When I got home it was however a different story .............

I suddenly realized, with the light that haven't worked for ages, I don't have brake switches!!!!!!  That means no brake light, only a continuous shining light.  That means scrutineering fail!!!

My hopes are now that I can leave the bike at Runner tomorrow and hopefully he can help over the next 3 days before we leave!

Tomorrow also fitting rear tyre and mousse and then everything, apart from the brake lights, should be sorted.

Soos Bazinga vanmiddag se toe ek daar weg ry:  Flat out Kobus!

15km from Upington now and the months of preparation is now drawing closer and closer to the actual thing!

We left Gauteng in two vehicles this morning, one at 05h00 and me and my cousin at 09h00.  Not difficult to spot the lazy lot.  Group 1 is pushing through to Port Nolloth whilst we have 94km to go where we'll be staying over in Kakamas.  Again you can spot the lazy lot.  Ironically we are only 100km behind the first lot at this stage - I guess the race started in Gauteng already.  :lol8:

Dag 1 - 18 Maart

My maag maak draaie.

Koffie en ontbyt volg, maar my eetlus is min.  Nietemin dwing ek brekfis in my lyf af.

Just been waiting for this, Kobus.  :thumleft:

:thumleft:  Hold on for the ride of my life Frank.

We set off from the school to head off to the pans just outside of town.  Our crew is already out there setting up pits and I find being on the bike helps a bit with the nerves, which is by now bordering a mild panic.

Getting to the pans and it's quite a long wait for everything to settle down and Alex sets off to check that the route is all clear.

:eek7:

They decide that all the even numbered bikes will start first, followed by the uneven ones.  I'm somewhat relieved that we won't be the first bikes off.

Like a lot of thing this weekend, things changed quickly and all of a sudden we're up to open the event!

We all line up to take a run for our bikes and hit the pan all the way to the end, take a left turn and then right into and over the dunes ..... THE DUNES!!!

Now, if you can remember that dream when you were small and you were running across the road and you just couldn't get away?  That exact scene was playing off as I started heading for the bike.  It felt like the bike was just not getting closer.

Eventually I swung my leg over the beast.  I could feel my hands trembling as I reached for the starter button.

The beast came alive and all I could think is ...... moet asseblief nie sommer nou al voor al die mense neer bliksem nie!

In my mind I saw myself popping a wheelie down the length of the pan ....... and then I realized - I can't wheelie!

Photos to follow - just downloading quickly

We were two teams which shared a backup crew, and in the end ended up being one team that tackled the event together.

The Metalhorse men, Ian and Jason.

The bikes line up for the start.

And then we run .....

And off we go.

And this is what I had in mind!  Showing us how it's done.

Ek kyk mooi wat die ouens voor my doen en dink 'stand up, look up, open up; stand up, look up, open up.

Ek maak plek en hy los my in sy stof.

And here we go for lap 2.  I get to the bottom of the pan for left turn once more and realize I'm suffering from extreme arm pump!  Not being used to sand riding, I was obviously holding on for dear life.  I realized that this was not gonna work for the rest of the prologue.

Again I had a conversation with myself to try and calm down.  I knew I had to find some sort of rhythm to avoid clenching the bars so tight.  My legs were also feeling the strain and I started combining the standing with sitting wherever I can do avoid exerting so much energy.

It worked and soon I was going at a relatively steady pace.

Before I knew it I saw the pans again, headed for the windsock once again and stopped at Sean for the time to be logged.

Into the pits and our brilliant crew was full of smiles, ready with a drink and waiting on the rest of the team.

The wait was not long and we saw Jason and Ian coming over the pan.  They were riding slow and very close to each other.

As they got closer we realized Jason was towing Ian.  Oh shit, what now, it's only day 1.

Ian pulled into the pits and we realized his oil cooler sprung a leak and it was oil all over the place!

Not long and Jan and Arrie came in after helping someone get some wire unstuck.

Phew, we all made the prologue, but needed to get back to the house to get going on Ian's bike.

Ian's bike was loaded after we watched the top 10 guys fighting it out for the starting position of stage 1.

Day 2 - 19 March

Again I lie awake long before my alarm goes off.  This time I'm more excited than nervous.  Just over 400km of unknown terrain lay ahead, exactly what we've been practicing for.

We had a strategy discussion the night before and decided we will ride as a group.  Since I was first off the starting line, I would pull off the track and wait for my team mates.

After a great breakfast and our great ladies sorting out our fluids and everything else for the backpacks, we head off for the school.

At this stage all I have is some time to kill.  A man can only sit still for so long, so herewith some more absolutely useless information share.

The first couple of kilometers is relatively easy and we all ride a steady pace.

At one stage I pass Arrie and is now riding between him and Ian.  I don't pay much attention to navigation and when I finally actually do, I realize that we actually just overshot a left turn.

Before I make the correction I scroll ahead and see that there is two obvious tulips that should indicate to Ian that he's on the wrong track, since he was by now out of site.

I make the u-turn and see Arrie coming from the front.  I signal that he should turn around and all I got back would be best described as some royal wave.

"WCB All: Refuel-1@ S29 09.066' E17 07.934'. Refuel-2@ S28 53.423' E17 00.906'. Rally: Fix Rb Refuel above at Tulip 065 & 114."

Ons moet aanstoot tot op tulip 114 - km 187.71!

I can see Jan's shoulder is no fun anymore.  We regroup and off we go for the next 87km.

At km 108,78 we hit the mountain.  All of a sudden the sand turns to rock with some challenging hill climbs and descents.

Myself and Jason take the lead and wait for the guys on top of the first mountain.  Since we don't see anything coming, I take off my helmet and don't even hear a bike.  I'm concerned, and, to be honest, a little bit frustrated.  The heat is unbearable and the stop/start is taking its toll.

Jason turns around and start descending the very same hill he just came up.  After about a minute I do the same, and before I can start the descent, I see Jan coming up the mountain and stop dead in my tracks.

Moments later Jason leads Ian up the mountain.  When he stops it's evident that the ascend didn't go as planned.  He managed to pop a spectacular wheelie (unplanned), but in the process flipped the bike.  His beautiful Husky now had a broken tail piece but fortunately nothing serious to man or machine.

You could see the strain on his face as he had to manhandle the bike up the pass.  Shortly Arrie followed and after giving him a quick breather we set off again.

This was followed by about 14km of 100km/h speed controlled gravel road that gave everyone a bit of breathing time!

This to me was the photo of the race, can not remember where it was taken, but definitely somewhere in the route up to now.

From left: Jason, Ian, Jan and Arrie

Straight after the gravel section and we hit the next mountain.

By km161,28, tulip 107, sien ons 'n bike staan ....................

Jason has a chat to Alex and somehow seems to convince him to let the two of us go.  Alex asks me how I'm feeling and all I can get out is "So sterk soos 'n bees!".  FFS, couldn't I think of something better to say??  :eek7:  Ian, Jan & Arrie are requested to take the 'shortcut' to the DSP while Jason and I waste no time to get over the mountain and down to the DSP.

Now the pace has picked up to a race, although cautious to not make a mistake so close to the service point.  I wish I had water, it's HOT!!  The time goes by quickly and before we know it we stop at the service point.  Ready to refuel and I get told that I have to do the refuelling myself.  A full jerry can has never been so heavy before.  I spill petrol all over the place on the first attempt and then readjust my grip to get my tank full.  I can now feel how tired I am.

Our magic crew makes sure we get something to eat, plenty to drink, goggles cleaned, soak us in water and check out the bike for any obvious damage.  Bladders full, power & cramp tablets down the throat and as we get ready to take off, we hear the other guys approaching.  We start getting a serious move on to avoid another negotiation session with Alex.

First in is Ian.  When he takes off his helmet we see he's in bad shape.  The medic is immediately called for a check up.  His findings are that Ian is dehydrated and it's race over.  Next in is Jan, and his shoulder has gotten the best of him - race over.   Arrie follows with Alex on his tail - his pace will not allow him to finish the stage and Alex recommends he rides his bike on the gravel road back.  That way he will allow him to start day 3.

And then there was two ...................

Jason takes off and as his dust settles I follow.  Immediately the pace is hectic, for me at least.  It's now about 15h15 and we just left the first fuel stop!!  We knew we had to get a move on and also knew that if Alex catches us, the race will be over.

I have to dig deep to keep up with Jason.  The heat is incredible and I can feel the energy continuously draining from my body.  I have nothing else to think of but to concentrate on keeping up with the man possessed in front of me.

Ek ry reg op my limit.

Nie lank nie of ek sien nie meer vir Jason agter my nie.

Jason is leading once again and by now I'm fairly used to riding in the dust.  This fesh fesh stuff appears every now and then and then it's just a dust explosion.  With the lack of wind the dust takes forever to settle or move out the way so by now I just throttle through it and hope for the best.

This time I was however not so lucky!  Nothing on the roadbook lets me believe there is reason for caution.  I see the  diagonal ruts indicated and then also see the dust explosion.  I am following very close behind Jason and decide to once again just push through, leaning back like I did previously.

The next moment I feel the front wheel stop dead.  I feel my helmet hitting the ground first, my neck rolling until the helmet meets the neckbrace, and then the lights go out ..................

Seconds later I'm aware that I never felt my body hit the ground. Jason already picked up my bike and is standing next to me asking if I'm OK.  "I think so" and he asks me to move everything.  I can move everything and I don't have pain anywhere.  As I get up I'm a bit dizzy and drink something.  No time to waste and we're off again.  A mere 40m and I bliksem down again.  I sit for a couple of seconds to pull myself towards myself, and Jason instructs me to ride in front.

Off we go again.  Not long and I don't see Jason behind me.  I turn around and find Jason picking up tools behind me.  My little toolbox on the rear fender was torn and I was dropping all my tools as I ride.  We stuff the tools in the backpack and try and save the rest by wrapping duct tape around it.  As we finish off, we hear a bike!

It's Alex, and for the second time my heart is racing!  Race over?  He stops momentarily, asks if we're ok and sets off.  We follow right behind him, scared to lose him and the inevitable instruction to stop.

We are now riding even faster than before to keep up with Alex.  It was not too many kilometers when we saw something up ahead, slowed down and stopped.  There was someone lying on the ground with two riders around him ....................

Dit is so unreal!

At the petrol station there is no shop to get some water, or anything for that matter.  I ask the people around there if I can drink some of the tap water and they reckon all is well.  I wet my head as much as I can and join Jason again to reload the rest of the roadbook.  The paper the roadbook was printed on was simply too thick to fit all at once - for us at least.

All done and we set off for the last stretch home.  All goes well until we get to a point where we are very unsure of the route.  There's tracks all over the show in every direction imaginable.  After losing quite a bit of time Jason is confident of the bearing and we head off.  Spot on!!  It's now getting late.

We hit, what I like to describe as irritating dunes.  The sand is incredibly loose and there is just no way of getting momentum.  Dusk is setting in and before long, after picking up my bike numerous times in these little dunes, we are out in the dark.  My goggle lenses are tinted and I struggle to see very far in front of me.  I notice Jason at once stage rode without goggles.  I realise that I have clear lenses in my backpack but there is simply no time to stop and make the exchange.  The sand is not to bad and I find if I just hold on very lightly the track steers you in the right direction and then I just through my bike in the same direction.  Our pace obviously slows down.

At least the heat is now gone and before we know it, we are met by the marshal, Sean Kriel, who takes our time and sets us off to the stationary bivouac at the school.

We arrive at the school at 19h55 - 5 minutes before  riders briefing and stage cut off!!!

We waited an hour for Alex to arrive at the briefing, where he shared the devastating news of Gary Rowley's passing to the group.  It was decision time and Alex wanted to know if we wanted to race the next morning.  One of Gary's team mates (Team Verve) got up and said that Gary would have not wanted the race to stop.  There was a minute of silence held in honour of our fellow rider.

We set off home, had supper and started marking the next day's roadbook.  Our support crew was hard at work preparing everything for the next day, now 3 additional men strong with Jan, Arrie and Ian lending a hand where necessary.

Day 3 - 20 March 2017

Die laaste stage is so 280km lank.

I watch Jason disappear behind the dune, knowing he can not afford  to look behind him at the moment.  I get up and back to my bike, which is still standing up perfectly straight with the front wheel dug deep in the sand.  I mount the beast once more and find that I can not engage the clutch - stuck!!

I struggle for a long time trying to force the clutch in, to no avail.  I think of releasing the bleeding screw to see if that will help, and then realise that I lost all my tools yesterday!!  With arriving so late the previous night I didn't replace any of the tools that I would need in case of mechanical failure.  I get up to see if Jason has turned around but he's out of sight.  All I have is cable ties that's strapped to my sidestand!  I take the thickest one and strap it around the bleeding screw, tighten it, pull, and it snaps off.  Try another one and the same happens.  It's hot and I'm sweating like a pig, as I start to take off my kit.

I realise that this is probably the end and decide to walk up the dune to see if I can see Jason and signal to him that he should carry on and try and make the cut off of 10h00.  I wait there for a while as I hope he did just that.  (I later heard that he spent about 15min looking for me and then continued - good man!)

I now realized that there was not much I could do - I didn't even bring my phone with and I'm sure there would've been signal.

I decide to try and get the bike into neutral, drop a gear and try and spin it out in order to get going again.  I get it into neutral, start it and as I'm about to drop it into gear, I naturally pull on the clutch.  IT WORKS!!!  After just over an hour, I'm excited again.  I walk the bike out and park it on harder sand.  I kit up and stuff everything in the backpack again.  I mount the bike, very well knowing that I won't make the cut off time.  I decide to nonetheless head that way.  Catch a breath and look down on the navigation equipment.  DEAD!  I know I didn't switch it off and scroll the road book.  It works, but both the trip and cap is dead.  I flip the switches nervously - NOTHING.

I take another look in the direction Jason set off and decide that it would be foolish to head out blindly deeper into the desert.  I make the call to find a route back over the dune and head west, hugging the dune on the northern side.  It works well and before long I find a nice tweespoor sand tract that leads me back to the main road.  I head off to the school where I find a marshal that can get the message back to the DSP that rider 119 is OK, but out the race.

I am both disappointed and relieved as I park my bike at our place of stay.

When Jason returns I also learn that he didn't make the cut off and can't help but the think that I was the cause of that.

We relax the afternoon and later head out for prize giving, where we learn that myself and Jason were receiving finishers medals for completing >75% of the race route.  Needless to say, I was ecstatic.

And this, was my experience as a complete newbie to rally and my first Baja.  It was tough, very tough.

Many thanks for sharing your insightful experience, Kobus.

Also, your coverage of Grolls's passing shows a great deal of compassion

Wow Kobus, thanks so much for your report. You did amazingly well, under very tough conditions - riding at the back of the field is the hardest thing to do with the worst of the heat.

I agree with what frankmac said too...can't imagine how hard it must have been.

Wel gedaan! So wat is volgende, Amageza?

Alles is nou weer 100%.

Amageza? Tyd sal leer.

Die CRF sal van komende naweek weer bietjie aandag geniet ja, hy moet klaar kom.  :thumleft:
